You can use a Wordpress Analytics plugin. See reference for details.

You can place in in your footer just before the </body> tag.

how can I reach this footer thing? Where can I find the "footer" so that I can add the code?

Can you explain more? It would be nice if you explained more to us. Thanks!

Here's how I did it. I hope it's correct. Go to your Wordpress admin area. On the left, look for "Appearance" and expand it to reveal "Editor". Click on that and you will be taken to a screen with HTML code on it and a bunch of file names to the right. Click on "footer.php". Scroll to the very bottom of the text area that should now be displaying the HTML code of your footer. Find the </body? line and right above it, add/paste your Analytics code.

I tried adding the code to the footer and it is telling me “The requested theme does not exist.”  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks

Shouldn't it be in the header.php file, just before the </head> tag and not in the footer?

I installed WordPress on my .ro site, using a subdomain. I had a similar issue about placing the Analytics script. footer.php and header.php did absolutely nothing for me ... and voila ! I inserted the code in the very bottom of the page.php file, and it's working perfectly. I hope this will help some of you, using your own sites to host wordpress.

My Wordpress doesnt have just the editor tab.  It has Edit CSS is that the same thing?

I don't have editor either, I have edit CSS because I upgraded to allow myself to customise the CSS. There's no </head> tag in the CSS code - where do I put it?

Google Analytics says post at the end of the "header" file. I don't understand why you would want to put it in the footer. I have pasted the code that analytics provides at the end of the header.php file in wordpress. Now my analytics page says it is gathering information. We'll have to see if it works.

I think there's two issues at play here: 1) GA in footer vs : footer for traditional GA tracking code, section, just before for newer (and preferred) asynchronous tracking code. Most of the comments referring to the footer and the tag are from before async code was in widespread use. 2) Wordpress.org vs Wordpress.com blog: it seems the original question (and some follow-up questions) was in relation to Wordpress.com blog. To quote from a WordPress.com support page dated Dec 15, 2010: "Can I use Google Analytics? No, Google Analytics cannot be used on WordPress.com blogs at this time." Hope this helps clarify things! :)

. . . UPDATE An update on how to add Google Analytics code to a Wordpress site. 1. Copy google analytics code 2. Go to your wordpress dashboard > appearance > widgets > scroll down to "inactive widgets" 3. Select meta 4. Paste code 5. Click save Once back in Google Analytics, click on dashboard, or Google Accounts to update and refresh. Verify options will disappear if the setting takes properly. Or confuse yourself further, courtesy of these links , ) WJR team . . .

Thanks for this solution, worldjournalism. It worked for me with one exception.  In step #3, when I selected "meta", it only gave me an option for giving the widget a title and nowhere to paste the code.  However, by selecting a "text" widget, I was able to paste the code.  Thank you!
