I've the same problem here since a month:
You can see some screenshot of these bugged pictures in the attachments.
Please help me, I'm going crazy with this error!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||SQLPerformance||7/11/13 2:07 AM|
If they are pictures from an old Places entry Edit screen. no +Local Business page button option
they are not being copied anymore.
Till you get the new Edit screen upload photos from another account as public.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Giovanni Mastrangelo||7/11/13 2:40 AM|
No, none of these came from old Places entry Edit screen.
Perhaps I figured out how to reproduce this bug, at least on my +Local Business page.
1) I upload a profile photo. This photo appears also in the photo section (under All photos of...) and in the about section.
2) Now I delete this profile photo even from the trash.
3) The photo is actually deleted form the profile album but not completely in the photo section and in the about section: a no entry sign placeholder appears in place of that photo.
4) If I try to edit this photo/icon I can only report abuse, but as soon as I click on this menu entry a message appears on the top of the page reporting a 500 server error.

I'm checking with Google on this on another thread so I'll keep you posted!

OK, thank you!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Electrician SOS||7/22/13 2:22 PM|
That's spot on! Deleted profile pics seem to cause this. However I'm not sure its exclusive to the profile pics only.
It would be great to find a solution, shame no-one seems to know exactly why it happen or how to fix it.
Anxiously awiting some good news......Thanks for everyone's input on this problem.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||7/22/13 4:55 PM|
I never got a response from Google so I'm pinging them again.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jade W.||7/23/13 8:05 AM|
The gray circles appear in the place of deleted photos for a while before the photo can be fully deleted from our systems. This is taking a bit longer than usual right now.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Storm Creative||8/1/13 10:17 AM|
We've had a grey circle up for about 4 months now. When is this going to be fixed/is there anyone that can remove 'removed' pictures/please help!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||8/1/13 10:27 AM|
@Jade could you look at this one? I know normally photos take about 1 month to show up so I'm guessing they might take that long to delete, but 4 months seems excessive.

The gray circles are still appearing in place of deleted photos in some cases -- we are looking into the delay. I'll pin this thread in case anyone else is having this issue, too.

(I'm so glad I found this forum thread.) I'm a Google Trusted Photographer (Google Business Photos) and I have clients who are asking me this very question.Thinking I could easily figure out the process and solve the issue for them, I tried replacing some of my photos. (See image) Now I can tell them at least the issue has been recognized and is being worked on. Thanks, Jade.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||8/2/13 8:42 AM|
I wouldn't get too excited.
This problem dates back to Oct 2012 and they still haven't fixed it (i.e. just let us delete/bar any pictures of us, used on our pages).
Fingers crossed though!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Christian Parley||8/2/13 8:52 AM|
Wow, that seems excessive. But thanks for the heads up.
Yeah, I'll definitely be telling all my clients not to touch their profile photos. Any ideas of trying to control their brand right now may lead to the "this is why I don't like Google" conversations again. Those get rough sometimes.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||8/4/13 4:35 PM|
I have the same problem.... just deleted some photos because I wanted to change them and replace them with some others, and then this happened:
so very annoying. Is it a bug Jade ? Makes me feel afraid to ever change those photos in the future.
But how come we can change other photos easily enough, it is just those five photos that have a problem?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chad West||8/7/13 8:52 AM|
Jade is this a result of the photos still being saved in the trash for up to 60 days once deleted? I had a 3rd party SEO company managing my google plus page and cannot access what they had in their trash as a manager of the account. I feel like I am stuck with a grey box with a line through it forever on my google plus page.
The downside to this for google is that this bug makes it highly unlikely that I will attempt to promote our google+ page at all(paid advertising to google). The first thing on out page is a grey box? Please advise on how to get rid of this.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Marta Miklinska||8/13/13 4:03 AM|
Having the same issue. And it's very annoying, especially for my clients. For instance, this is a 5 star hotel;
It looks very unprofessional guys, please please do something to fix it asap!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||tkerrigan||8/14/13 9:10 AM|
We are experiencing the same frustrations. Please fix this! We have move, consolidated our local profile with our business profile and ever since we've had this "no entry" image as a placeholder on our Google Maps listing. The "no entry" images are also the first focus when viewing our Google + page. We are hoping to start sending customers to our page for reviews and to interact with us, but quite frankly we don't feel like it looks the way we want it to.
Please fix this Google!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||8/15/13 11:52 AM|
so insanely frustrating...
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||MBlumenthal||8/15/13 12:48 PM|
It is very frustrating to not have a page that reflects the image of your business, I agree. I also agree that Google has left this bug too long. That being said, Google has made it so hard to get to the page that I doubt if any users ever make it there. Have you tried to access that page from the main search results page? At best it is at least 2 clicks away. In some cases it is 4 clicks.
So while Google should fix what they build, the reality is that very, very, very few users ever will see the problem.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ali Bazzi||8/15/13 12:56 PM|
MBlumenthal, I would have to disagree with your conclusion that very, very, very few users will see the problem. For one of my clients, all you have to do is search for their name and the issue appears on Page 1 of the Google search results. See attached.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ali Bazzi||8/15/13 1:07 PM|
@Jade W, Can you please help with our listing. We have 3 of these "Minus" photos and the main one is appearing across all Google properties (Search, Maps, Plus). I've uploaded 4 additional photos, but I can't get rid of the "Minus" photos nor make any of the current photos the primary image that appears on Google properties (Search, Maps, Plus). See attached screen shot with issue highlighted in red.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||8/15/13 1:20 PM|
That is the main problem since the image is attached your maps listing, whenever someone searches the business name, it will show up as that minus symbol which I am afraid will give people the idea you are no longer in business. Have now spent almost an entire day trying to get the image to appear correctly by uploading profile pics and the minus symbols just shift around. I would just let it be but I have read some people have had this symbol showing up for four months. This can have a huge impact on business...
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jstarr6785||8/17/13 4:24 PM|
Has this issue been addressed yet?? I am having the same problem..
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||MBlumenthal||8/18/13 5:41 AM|
Point well taken. Have you tried calling support to see if they can do anything?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||MBlumenthal||8/18/13 5:52 AM|
Observation 1: All of the examples are of merged G+ Pages for local.
Observation 2: I have never seen this on a straight up (non social) G+ Page for local
Question: has anyone attempted to delete the social page and see if the problem goes away?
Question: How did you create the social page? Did you do so through the merge process? Or was it the one click upgrade from the new dashboard?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||8/18/13 6:23 AM|
I have reported this to the google local help person who helped me overcome numerous difficulties re. verification of my google+ page.
She told me on August 4:
Thanks for contacting the Google+ Local Team! I have queued your request, to remove the two grey stop signs. Please allow up to 7 days for the specialist team to take a look at your case.
It is now August 18th and she no longer answers my emails on this subject.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||8/18/13 6:34 AM|
I dont quite understand why you say
Are 2 or 4 clicks that bad?
In my case, living in London UK, if my website is listed on the local Map, when you click on my listing , it takes you through to the google plus page, instead of the old local page with testimonials, which existed before, and which I thought was far better, and worked better too. My story also is that because of bugs in google, they have lost all my previous testimonials, so the testimonials no longer show up, so when a new visitor clicks on my link and are taken to my google+ page, they see those stop signs.... not great publicity! Seems unbelievable that they have so many issues that they cant sort out.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||`Keenan||8/18/13 10:13 PM|
@evaevan - Mike is just expressing his general frustration with several of the recent changes Google has made which seems to minimize the importance of the local pages which, on the surface, appears rather counterintuitive to many of us.
You probably want to be sure that you have deleted the contents of the Trash Can. Hover over the left menu > photos > then click More in the top navigation.
This isn't the first time there have been issues with photos. Keep in mind Google has been working hard for a year to bring Places into the 21st century, expect turbulence. I think those that have access to the New Dashboard should have fewer issues.
If you recently lost the reviews, I suggest you start a new thread.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||8/19/13 5:38 AM|
Thanks, Keenan, I must say 'frustration' isnt a strong enough word as far as Im concerned.... . there are SO many problems on the local pages - and most of us are trying to run a business , not spend most of our day complying with Google's unrealistic algorithms. I can post on another thread - but Im frankly tired of all this. Nevertheless, I appreciate the time you have spent on my post. Thank you.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||8/19/13 9:09 AM|
The only time I have actually received any sort of response from Google when I have had problems was when it was Adwords related. They even have live chat for adwords problems. Sort of understandable I guess since it's really the only way they make money from businesses like ours. I do get tired of the constant fear that changing one little thing can cause a problem that will haunt your business for months or years to come. We are most likely going to be moving to a new location relatively soon and I am not looking forward to changing our address in maps/places/local/plus or whatever it is called lol. I mean the fear that an "error" may happen when making these changes and getting re-verified is almost enough to keep from wanting to move to a better location. In essence it feels like these programs were thrown together and once a program is "completed and live" they just move on to the next program and forget to stay on top of the existing ones. A prime example is that I just received an email this morning that the program Google Engage is becoming Google Partners. Why not just keep building one idea instead of always switching to something else and creating more problems for everyone? I guess I will never understand and they will never have to explain it to us either. Anyhow, our profile still shows the grey stop sign thing and I am sure it is destined to stay that way for years to come. I suggest you guys all get used to this idea and just accept it...
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||8/19/13 9:12 AM|
I have a lot of experience with Adwords support and Places support and I really think the Places support is trying to improve. Their team is probably way smaller than Adwords as it's a much smaller product, but I know they are trying. Have you tried calling them? https://support.google.com/places/contact/c2c_places
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||8/19/13 9:25 AM|
Haven't tried calling, figured I would wait to hear from at least one person in this forum that had solved this problem (which hasn't happened). I would rather not waste time on a phone call that gets us nowhere if not one person has received any support regarding this issue. Like I mentioned, I have tried in the past to receive support for many Google related issues and not once received any actual help for the problems (unless Adwords related). I mean, sure they will take the time to receive your request and maybe tell you things will be alright in a couple weeks to shut you up but in the end, nothing happens and you just have to accept the problem and move on. Otherwise, you just end up wasting more of your life waiting for the "Google Gods" to realize you exist and fix a problem. Much better I guess to just wait and hope that some upgrade or algorithm change will happen to fix whatever error is causing the issue. I think that is how they handle things and maybe the employees just expect things to get fixed that way so they don't even bother with it... maybe I'm wrong.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||8/19/13 9:27 AM|
If I somehow get this problem solved, I will post in here how it took place and I hope all of you will do the same. In the end, "we" are truly the support for Google problems through helping each other figure them out.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||tkerrigan||8/19/13 9:43 AM|
Calling was a complete waste of my time. The new business G+ page is such a new option that I'm not quite sure there is anyone 100% proficient in it. I'll give them an "E" for effort, but I had basically answered my own question. Side note: Google really needs to change the hold music.
I lived the nightmare of having a business "local" "old" G+ page that was linked to a Youtube account. Then, we moved locations and during the process of getting the new address verified, we stumbled upon the new Business Page profiles. Unfortunately, Google cannot merge the old local G+ page with the new business page. I fixed it though. Just downloaded the old youtube videos (nothing to lose in way of followers or comments so it wasn't a huge deal to my business thankfully) and deleted the old local G+ business page, which deleted the youtube account. I did lose my Youtube channel name, but I digress.
The only thing that I cannot do is get rid of these pesky "no entry" photos. I think someone above said that it makes it look like we're out of business... I can't agree more. Maybe it will take a bigger customer/brand to get Google's wheels spinning. It seems as though Walmart's business G+ page isn't having this problem.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||tkerrigan||8/19/13 10:54 AM|
The closest analogy I have on this is: Do you remember when Facebook had fan pages and then rolled out business pages? They discontinued the fan pages and made everyone establish a business profile page that was managed by an admin profile. Now, I'm not sure that's the direction Google is going in, but I can offer a bit more insight:
The old G+ local/social page was not integrated with Google Maps. So the places/local listing and social G+ page for your business weren't connected. Now with the Business G+ page, all reviews you get on your G+ page will show up as reviews on the Maps listing. This helps if you want to get a seller rating -- those pretty stars in your adwords ads and on your Maps listing.
If you want the social, ratings and Maps functions to work as one profile, than you need a business page. Unfortunately, Google has absolutely no way of merging the old social G+ business pages with their new G+ Business page profiles.
If you haven't gone completely mental after figuring it out, then Google will roll out a new function to ensure they complete the job.

I have tried everything to fix this.
I emptied the trash, uploaded new photos, changed profile, nothing. It's so annoying and it looks unprofessional.
I can also say my map listing dropped off completely once this photo appeared. I am so upset with the algorithm. It has impacted my ability to receive a location citation in one primary keyword.
Google please fix this I don't know why it's lasted so long.
I would never have changed the profile had I known this would happen!!!

I noticed our missing Photo icon has been removed as of today or actually, it is not showing when I am logged out, but it still shows when I am logged in to G+ which is kinda interesting because it is not there when logged in as the Owner, just me as the Manager, the one that deleted it.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||9/13/13 1:52 AM|
Are Google short of staff, I wonder. Surely this cant be that difficult to resolve !
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||9/13/13 3:07 AM|
Even if they could just replace the NO ENTRY sign (that makes it look like we're closed or have done something wrong) with ANY other image. Stick the Google logo on there, anything other than a no entry sign!
If they started charging for G+ clicks on Adwords adverts this would be fixed within a day.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||9/13/13 3:16 AM|
yes, this entire situation really is unbelievable - it must be a low priority for Google, but the problem is that it is really affecting
us badly, and our hands are tied....... our complaints lead nowhere.... SO frustrating.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Scottsark||9/13/13 5:17 PM|
Same problem here. Seems so simple, so I thought I would Google for a quick answer and found this thread. I can't believe it. Thats ok though, I mean who goes to Google Maps to try and find a business anyways. Can't be loosing THAT much business, right? right? :(
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||9/13/13 5:54 PM|
I can say that if this issue is ever resolved, I will never be making any future changes or updates to any of my google listings and will recommend to family, friends, acquaintances, and even sworn enemies that they think twice about it as well. lol
You would think maybe there would be a high priority on such a thing considering this is only affecting business owners which in most cases have a much further social reach than the average consumer.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||9/13/13 5:59 PM|
I recommend you guys share this group discussion via the G+ button at the top of the page. At least people will think twice before changing their profile pic and perhaps we can save others from having this happen to them...
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Electrician SOS||9/17/13 3:22 PM|

At least I don't feel so alone now, what can we do about this Guys, and Girls?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||9/17/13 5:55 PM|
I can promise you guys that Google is aware of this. Because it's a bug - it's not an easy fix. I'm not a computer programmer but I know debugging is a long and painful process so there is no "easy fix". Everything breaks once and awhile when it comes to technology.
I know it's not the answer anyone wants but just trying to assure you all that you've already done everything you can.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||NSN - Datenrettung Hamburg||9/17/13 10:57 PM|
Call your local adwords customer service
Advertising on Google+ Pages are impossible.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||9/18/13 1:18 AM|
Lovely. Let them spend years fixing the bugs and we should all be happy to accept bugs because bugs happen with technology. Lovely. Meanwhile, people think we're closed or have done something wrong and we lose business. Not lovely.
Replacing the no entry sign with ANYTHING (even the Google logo) IS a simple fix that can be done in minutes, but Google don't seem to be willing to do this.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||9/18/13 1:22 AM|
And they'll fix the bug/problem? For each one of us, one at a time? So we all have to call up? Not quite 'Internet 2.0' is it? Will I have to write them a letter to update text in the future?
Instead of dealing with thousands of phone calls, just fix the problem (or at least replace the no entry sign image).
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||9/18/13 3:46 AM|
Generally when they fix a bug it applies a fix to everyone.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||9/18/13 4:07 AM|
But how comes they can fix it individually if we all just call our Google representative, as has been suggested many times (other than being a quite a good sales opportunity for Google ;0)?
Either/any way, I just want the image deleted or the no entry sign changed to something/anything else.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||9/18/13 6:48 AM|
Well, a very strange thing has happened to me...... I had 2 of those no entry signs, and now I only have one, so it looks like one of them has been
fixed ! So how come they managed to fix just one of my signs ????
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||9/18/13 7:32 AM|
I am not aware of a manual fix being applied by Adwords or Google support to address the missing photo image.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||9/18/13 7:35 AM|
Me neither. So why are people saying that we should call our local adwords customer service?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||9/18/13 7:41 AM|
Not really sure. I remember trying to get Google Places support from Adwords Express when it first came out and basically the Adwords staff would constantly tell me they have nothing to do with Google Places.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||9/18/13 8:14 AM|
My post was in response to the person that suggested calling Adwords. So that the suggestion did not stand unchallenged.

Just confirming again that we are indeed aware of the situation and are working on a fix for all affected pages.

Has anyone figured out a solution to this problem? It looks so terrible and I've fallen off of the map completely in the address listings. I wish you could just pay google for this service because this is rediculous. It's like shining a flashlight at the sun, one day I hope google fixes this fiasco.

Call your local adwords customer service
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||9/18/13 12:06 PM|
Well, we have one person claiming Adwords fixed it for them. Do a couple more people want to try contacting their Adwords reps to see if they can fix it for you.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||allenrocks||9/18/13 12:31 PM|
I'll try contacting Adwords after this meetings. I'll post my findings right afterward.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Linda Buquet ~||9/18/13 2:26 PM|
Not sure why folks are contacting Adwords?
Back before there was Places phone support that was sort of a back door way to try to get help. But now there IS direct Places support, so why go the Adwords route? They would just need to go to Place support which you can get to directly yourself now.
However if it's a bug support can't fix it. It would take an engineer doing a system-wide fix which is not quick or easy and doe not get done on a one-by-one basis.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||9/18/13 2:30 PM|
I second Linda's skepticism about Adwords reps being able to fix anything like this. But someone did post that it worked for them; so I suppose it is worth trying.
Do please let us know your results.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Scottsark||9/18/13 3:00 PM|
I just called Adwords support and now they have forwarded me to the newish Places support. I'm on hold now but I'll post the results when I'm done.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jason T. Wiser||9/18/13 3:04 PM|
I am getting the "no entry" image also in very important places like maps carousel and in Google search as seen ablve. Also, I see the image on the photos page, but this is not a big deal.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jason T. Wiser||9/18/13 3:06 PM|
mine was from a merged page from an older Google places account and a newly created Google Plus Local Business Page. FYI
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Scottsark||9/18/13 4:40 PM|
"The issue has been forwarded to the engineering and research department." They said I would hear back in 3-5 business days :(
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Been wrong before!||9/22/13 1:32 PM|
Hi Electrician SOS see your problem not fixed going on three months. Whats up with Google?
My guess is the minus signs don't show up in the carousel in the states.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ali Bazzi||9/24/13 10:17 AM|
I checked our listing and it has been corrected! Thanks Google!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ryan Laughlin||9/24/13 10:37 AM|
I've been experiencing minus signs on disambiguation pages for nearly two months. Even worse, on pages matching my brand's name, our logo isn't shown but our competitors logos are! This needs to get fixed as my job might depend on it.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jill Caren||9/24/13 1:38 PM|
I am also having this problem and I finally got in the Places for rank and it shows the darn "missing image" icon instead of any of my images! It has been like this for a while but I did not make a big deal of it until I know see it is affecting my listing in Places!!!
When will this be rectified?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Been wrong before!||9/24/13 4:34 PM|
@Ali Bazzi yes you got rid of most of your minus signs,don't try and fix the last one I would quit while I'm ahead.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||9/25/13 3:35 AM|
what do you mean by 'I would quit while Im ahead'?
Even IF google ever manages to fix this fault, and that is a BIG IF, does it mean we can never change the pics again,
because we will get another minus sign, I wonder.....that would be so impractical. Really, the whole thing is a big MESS
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Michael Siegmund||9/25/13 2:18 PM|
I have the same problem, which is bad for business, it just sucks!!!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||allenrocks||9/26/13 7:30 AM|
Mine got fixed, guess it really does take time.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||9/26/13 10:10 AM|
The process to replace the deleted photos seems to be working, just very slowly. Google is aware of the issue and working on a solution. Though I half expect their solution will be to migrate people to the new Dashboard, which may take several more months to reach everyone.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Been wrong before!||9/29/13 2:56 PM|
No Problem with replacing a deleted photo(just add a new one) the problem is trying to remove the residue left behind when you delete a photo.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ryan Laughlin||10/1/13 10:34 AM|
My logo returned! However it is still missing in disambiguation pages (it's a gray minus sign). This is troubling considering the majority of our branded search traffic comes from terms that show this disambiguation page.

Well, I have been on this ship myself for sometime. Currently, I have the dreaded grey circle. A week ago, I had my logo showing as intended. Three months ago it was the grey circle. Before that, it was my logo. Moral of the story...it goes and it comes back. I traced the grey circle back to a picture file on my phone. It was the very first profile pic I used before getting my company logo. I changed my profile pic to my new logo and now I'm fighting the grey circle fight. I've cleared the trash can, deleted the picture, etc. I've changed the pictures within my places account, etc. I wonder if the changes coming November 12th will help.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||10/14/13 1:12 AM|
Who got this over the weekend...(see below)
Google will kindly give us control over where our page's photo appears on Google, but not allow us to actually have a photo (just a nice no entry sign).
Good work Google?!?
Stilllllllll not fixed (5 months now)
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||10/14/13 4:53 PM|
Well I wrote to the google team for a second time , on august 20 th to ask when this problem will be sorted out, and Ive only just received a response from them - ie 2 months later, saying:
'Thanks for your patience! To clarify, these occurring photo issue on your listing is still being investigated by our engineer and product team. This issue is more complex is as originally diagnosed. Because of this status, we cannot say when the issue will be resolved and when you will see your reported problem fixed. .......
I will be following up when the engineer team has fully fixed the technical problem at hand. Thanks again for your understanding during this time.
and then, guess what, they say:
I'd also like to let you know to expect a short anonymous survey about your support experience in the next few days. We're always looking for ways to improve our customer support and your feedback will definitely help.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT !!!!

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||10/17/13 1:36 PM|
I exactly have the same issue. It's like you tell the customers: Don't come in! No entry! Fab for business!
Google has got the monopoly so, basically they will not care for your problem!
I kinda managed to sort it out for a bit, by uploading a new photo and then when it displays after the no entry sign(s), play with it by rotating it to the left or the right, it should then display before the no entry sign(s), which means that they will not appear in search results.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ananda Kannan P||10/18/13 8:54 PM|
I am having the same problem for long time. Even if i share some of our recent photos to display there its not showing up. Its just showing the old one with minus icon https://plus.google.com/109389409291264413184/about
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||audi1||10/21/13 10:24 AM|
We're also having the same problem with our listing.
If we can't take out that minus icon, do you guys know of a way to change the photo for our local listing on google so the minus icon doesn't show up?

It is really ridiculous!!!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Fredrik Bleymann||10/24/13 1:58 AM|
I just uploaded new logos to both my google+ and google places pages a few days ago. I then selected the new images as profile pictures, without deleting the old logos. Today the no entry signs were all gone. I don't know if it was because I added new ones or if google have finally sorted this issue, but it might be worth trying the same.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Southern Star Inspections, LLC||10/24/13 5:08 AM|
Fredrik... I do the same thing every two weeks or so. That's how long it typically works for. Then the"no entry" sign appears again.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||MBlumenthal||10/24/13 7:31 AM|
As a side note, I have learned that the Google photo filtering algo for local listings does not like Logos and will often not show them.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jade W||10/24/13 2:20 PM|
Just jumping in again to say that we are still working on this issue. Thanks for your patience.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||curticusq||10/24/13 2:41 PM|
The first time Jade chimed in on this thread was July 23. It's now October 24 and what's been done this far is precisely nothing.
I have dealt with Google on similar issues in the past and I can say this;
When Google decides it matters enough to get fixed, it happens in hours. Days at the most. Not months.
This tells me that Jade has done absolutely nothing to represent us and put interests.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||10/24/13 2:53 PM|
I think "Jade" is part of Google's new Ai algorithm. Kinda like Max Headroom? lol
On a serious note, the worst part is that this only seems to be effecting Google+ business pages which is the bread and butter for adwords so it's funny that it's not of higher concern.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jade W||10/24/13 3:06 PM|
While I wish I had better news to share, the truth is that our team is still actively working on fixing this issue.

Ok Jade. That was funny
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||10/24/13 3:12 PM|
Jade is a great advocate on our behalf. But remember, she is a social community manager, not an engineer. All she can do is make the case for why this should be fixed.
My best guess is that this issue is already fixed in the new Map and Dashboard and the engineers are focusing their efforts on getting those rolled out universally, rather than trying to fix the old systems that they are working to retire. It's just a guess based on my experience with software development. I've heard nothing about what Google is doing to fix the problem or how they are prioritizing it. Which is nothing new. If I get any advance notice of a new, or fixed, feature at all, it is never more than a week. So we'll all find out at the same time when Google fixes this.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Cristy Rutledge||10/24/13 3:22 PM|
Well, as was posted days ago, they mentioned in their new terms which will be rolled out on 11/13 (I think) that there will be more control over the profile pics and such. Maybe they are just waiting till that happens instead of debugging what already exists. Hopefully...
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||ArmorGroup||10/28/13 5:16 PM|
Ali Bazzi...it looks like your Grodon Chevorelet "minus sign" issue has been fixed. Did you make a new Google+ page or is there a fix?...I emptied my Google + photo trash and reported the minus sign photo for abuse...any other suggestions would be appreciated.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||marmitejam||10/29/13 2:10 AM|
I've found a solution (not a fix, as that would require Google doing something).
View the picture under a different Google+ account and under "more" report it as abuse.
I tried "this photo is not relevant to this business" and another one for "copyrighted material".
I imagine that the copyright report got my image removed, as Google care more about getting sued than their actual users.
What a massive waste of all our time for something that Google could simply fix by changing the error image to something other than a no entry sign.
Hope this works for everyone (only took a day for it to come down).

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Roofing and Cladding||10/29/13 4:35 PM|
We've been experiencing this problem for about a year I think:
Nothing we do improves the situation.
We only seem to be able to "manage" the page via the old clunky Google Places. If we visit the URL above and then just click "manage this page" it takes us to the old Google Places, but all we can do is Add or Remove photos there, and we can't choose which one is specifically the Logo for the Google+ Local page.
Is there any way that you guys can manually assign a specific photo as the logo for the G+ Local page?
We're at our wits end and the client really wants to leverage this page as much as possible.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Southern Star Inspections, LLC||11/2/13 6:15 PM|
I have done everything I can think of to fix this problem. It is so embarrassing to promote your business through what you want to believe is the "great" Google Plus but we can not get this issue repaired or even seriously addressed. Jade, please step this up to your supervisor if you can not seem to fix the issue other than popping in every once in awhile for "crowd control". I have deleted the grey circle of business death, deleted the trash right after, I have reported it to Google, I have reported the Pic as "does not belong to this business" (because a grey circle does not belong to my business!) I have deleted all of my pictures within the Places Dashboard and then re-submitted.
Jade, Can you at the very least tell us where this picture is generated from? Sometimes I change pictures around, delete and add, etc. and the picture shows up fine on Google search for about a week a week or two then....the dreaded grey circle of "hey this small business does not care about their online appearance" picture. Which in fact is the exact opposite... I have been dealing with this for about 8 months.
Please come up with something other than we are trying. All of this after just paying my Google payment on time and in full like every other month. We here that have spoken are at our wits end and are wanting to take part in everything Google is about but it does not seem as though Google shares the appreciation.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||11/3/13 3:31 AM|
Chris Dawkins, it doesnt take 3 months, this problem has been going on for over one year. My feeling is that Google have seriously lost the plot and are
totally out of control of what they have created. They are only getting away with it because it seems there is no real competition.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||11/3/13 3:39 AM|
They are also living on their past success. Because 'google' has become part of our vocabulary now, everyone searches via google. But if the general public were to find out what a mess google is in, and switched to yahoo or bing for the majority of their searches, all that could change in the blink of an eye. However at the moment, searching via yahoo or bing doesnt bring up as many results as google search. If I were the head of one of those companies, I would certainly try to take advantage of this situation. Small companies, especially, are gettting really fed up with the way they have been treated by google.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||jim.jaggers||11/4/13 12:15 PM|
If google is bringing up more, better search results, then I think the are living on their current success.
I'm pretty sure Bing (which also powers Yahoo) would like to produce better results than Google. If they ever do, it won't take long for people to shift to the better search engine.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/4/13 4:55 PM|
It's already starting though. On all our smartphones and tablets we use the Bing search widget because it just works immediately. The Google widget on Android is so excessively slow (and hangs). We've managed to convince about 70% of our clients to do the same who were experiencing the same issues. The benefits of a working widget outweighed the one with allegedly "better" search results.
I think there are other factors out there that will also see people start to use Bing and so on. I don't think people will ever move away from Google, I just think that (hopefully) there will be a bit more variety when it comes to what search engine to use.
I think this thread is veering away from its original purpose. People want answers for why the images are not sorting themselves out between Google Places and the G+ Local listing. We've been dealing with this problem for clients for over a year.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jade W||11/4/13 5:00 PM|
The fact of the matter is that we are still actively working on fixing this issue. We have passed on your reports and are also eagerly awaiting a solution.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/4/13 6:49 PM|
Ok thanks Jade. I'll put a reminder in my Google Calendar for 2017 to check back here for the fix ;-) (joking ... sort of).
Though you must admit that it's an excessively long period of time to deploy a fix. Especially when it ties into new G+ Publisher features you guys are touting with latest and greatest in SEM/SEO bag of tricks. G+ Local and stuff are working well for any one "new" signing up, but for many long-standing users of Google products and early-adopters, it's been a headache when we see these issues always arising.
Just like the on-going G+ Verification issues that people have been seeing since early 2012 (particularly those who got in early and listed in Google Maps back in the day, then updated their listings to Google Places > then it sort of merged to Google+ Local and the whole debacle with 500 Errors appearing, especially for service-area only businesses).
(Just as an example = 302 posts, 186 authors, 4196 views ... and counting since August 2012 and other related threads prior) Ref: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!mydiscussions/business/7U-mpxVx34M --- and still no fix.
Sorry - but my team members and I agree these problems are all to do with Google Places and similar legacy setups (when businesses had a Maps listing, etc) and the cross-over debacle to to G+ Local and so on.
It's become such a mess, so we've been actively educating our clients in pursuing alternate - more local - setups for SEM and location-based listings (local quality Directories with their own Maps/Location features) - and educating their audience as best as possible in using those tools and building a following there, instead of solely relying on Google products all the time. I know a number of colleagues who run other design studios trying to do the same. It's not perfect, but it is a decent starting point.
The good news for those reading this - don't feel as though G+ Local is your only option for "Local" SEO for your clients or your businesses. There are many alternatives with their own customisable map/location features that can do a good job, perform well in local google SERPs and can even the playing field a tiny bit - so that you don't feel pinned down by the mentality that Google is the only option, especially if you're being let down by problems that need more than 13 or 14+ months to "fix". It's just that you need to do a bit of localised research to ensure you're going with a quality option and not some spammy alternative. We've got a number of businesses that we do this for - and they're seeing much better local traffic coming from these Non-Google alternatives, than from the over-hyped G+ Local listing.
The comment from Chris Dawkins is a concern, a real one, for those of us in digital marketing. But unfortunately we have to live with the reality, and fact, that Google simply do not care (and why should they? Google is not a charity or benevolent society, it's a money-making behemoth --- so any free products like this that it churns out are not for "our" benefit --- if we expect Google to actually care, than we're just kidding ourselves). It's really all our own fault for placing so much reliance on these products --- an then whinging later that "Google isn't servicing us" properly ... again, why should they? The product is free.
Though it is different for those of us forking out money to Google in fees for other products - but who are also being screwed over by these Google Places images problem (and similar) ... well that's another issue. And that's just poor service provision. Again - when and where possible, just move onto another product or another company and spend your dollars elsewhere if you can.

Hi Giovanni how did you fix this issue? thanks :)
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Giovanni Mastrangelo||11/6/13 2:10 AM|
Hi Pedro. About a week ago I noticed that all the "no-entry signs" have gone away on their own, so I thought that google had fixed this issue for me.
However now, while I'm writing this post, I remember that about 3 weeks ago I made some changes with google places for business. Perhaps those changes might have solved the issue after some time, I don't know!.
This is what I made:
1) I deleted all the photos from the listing in the old google places page. I did this with another account (the one of the actual owner of the business, strangely this account is not already migrated to the new google places service).
2) I uploaded other photos to the listing of the new google places service using my own account (a manager account, but it has already migrated to the new google places for business).
3) Immediately after I noticed even more no-entry signs than before, so I thought that what I did was completely useless so I gave up everything for days.
About a week ago I noticed that all the "no-entry signs" have gone away. Now watching carefully the only remaining pictures are the logo (the profile picture of the G+ page) and those image that I uploaded with the new google places service.
I don't know if what I had done 3 weeks ago has really solved the issue after such a long period of time. However now I am afraid that if I change something, those horrible icons may appear again!
For convenience sake I attach a screenshot of what I see now with the two mentioned accounts.

So this is the way? I've already tried everything and there is no way to delete the pictures.
Google scans the whole world and is not in a position to delete some pictures, that's ridiculous.
Google says this:
This is caused by a system error.
We are aware of this discrepancy and are already doing to correct this.
At this time we can not say exactly when the problem is resolved, but our engineers are working to resolve it as soon as possible.

We are having the same problem. I called Google a few weeks ago and they claim a fix was coming. I see that this has been ongoing. Any suggestions?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||11/11/13 8:30 PM|
I notices that a while back you posted a comment regarding a gray circle as a profile picture in Google+. We are having the same problem with our business page. Would you mind sharing how you fixed it?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/11/13 9:05 PM|
Nope, still not fixed for us. Has been months upon months (and over a year of issues to do with the Google Places to Google+ Local merger).
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Tudor Tandoori||11/12/13 7:12 AM|
Called Google Places support. The guy on the phone said he is going to "escalate" the problem to the "relevant team" (he probably doesn't know himself). Our business look's so unprofessional that I'm considering making a website just so that it can cover it up in some way.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chaz Witt||11/12/13 8:26 AM|
I also had my claim escalated yesterday. They said I'd receive an email with the results in 48 hours. Still waiting, very doubtful of being solved
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/12/13 9:02 AM|
Anyone know why the actual profile picture of the Google+ page isn't the one used when showing a business to the right on Google results (next to the map)?
Really the "no entry" sign would be WAY less of a problem if you could just select a different picture for the right side box, or just have Google automatically use the page's profile picture for it.
Actually, what's the "right side of Google (next to the map)" box called anyways?
Other than that, wanted to add one other thing I noted -
When I click on the "No entry" picture it brings up the original descriptive text (and the trashcan icon which errors out).
This leads me to suspect that Google, rather than pulling an image file to display on the "right hand side (next to the map)" is pulling an object/container of the image and not catching that the object no longer has an actual image file.
But I think the real problem is that we can't just tell it the image we want to use!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Pedro Catalao||11/12/13 9:19 AM|
try to update the profile image in google places for business dashboard and then "report abuse" for the stop signs in google plus page
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/12/13 9:28 AM|
I had done the former, not the latter. Thank you, perhaps this will help. I'll reply if anything changes. Thanks again, Peter

Anyone know why the actual profile picture of the Google+ page isn't the one used when showing a business to the right on Google results (next to the map)?
It is one of the possible sources of the picture if it is a good enough quality and not a logo. Google seems to prefer real world pictures instead of logos.
Actually, what's the "right side of Google (next to the map)" box called anyways?
It is called a Knowledge Panel because the information there is sourced from Google's Knowledge Graph.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/12/13 12:16 PM|
Knowledge Panel, good to know. Thank for the link too, I'll check that out.
I had concluded that earlier on - that it preferred a picture, and that it preferred to actually pick the picture for me - and had come to accept that reality until recently when I started noticing a bunch of Knowledge Panels with logos (not pictures) in my search results. I'm not sure how many times I saw that happen before something triggered in me to try to get to the bottom of it. (Why, oh why, couldn't I leave it alone). So I set about trying to figure out how they had done that and it seemed in most cases the pages in question had limited their profile picture to one image (and it was always a logo). So, I up and deleted all my images except for the one I wanted. And that's how this all started... :^)
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||11/12/13 6:50 PM|
I have called over 20 times already. Today, they told me that the more people call and complaint the better.
The number to call is 18662466453. If you have a Google adwords, use your account #. If not, follow the route as a new adwords user.
Then, asked to be transferred to the Google Places/Map team and let them know.
The no-entry sign is the worst sign they can put up there as default for a business.
It is very unprofessional and totally embarrassing.
This is not a good way for Google to support businesses.
I am sure we have lost a lot of business b/c of this sign. Months to fix this is not acceptable from one of the most proactive companies around.
Google, take care of this please. We are your paying customers.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Lane' Bigsby||11/19/13 8:15 PM|
Ugh... looks like I, too, will be adding to the "call Google" list as I'm having the same exact problem as everyone else. This is very disheartening to learn how long this has taken (3+ months). Seems a bit excessive.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/19/13 9:38 PM|
Yep, very familiar with that scenario. We've lost count how many times our client has been asked if their business closed (as some visitors don't tend to search much further than Local).
We tried Giovanni's trick (from a few messages back in this thread) and we're currently waiting on the outcome. Apparently it can take many weeks for the changes to take effect. So far not a single thing has changed with the account - and we've heard absolutely nothing back from anyone at Google. Even the report we filed weeks ago has been completely ignored (as usual).
In reply to Lane's comment above ...3 months? That's shocking. But how about trying a year :-( Some people have had this problem for a significantly long period of time.
Our client has experienced this problem (on-going) since November 2012. In-fact, several days ago was the 1-year anniversary when we updated the Google Places listing for the client when they moved address. It's been a headache ever since.
Quite clearly Google simply does not care. None of us are important enough, simple as that. There is no other justification for a 12+ month on-going bug issue(s).
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/20/13 9:16 AM|
We spent spent a full day on this - deleting and reuploading our logo in different formats with different users, changing every setting possible.
Eventually, it worked! After many months of this missing logo and losing a potential client, $12,000 in revenue, because it appeared that we (as an internet marketing company) didn't know how to manage a google+ page.
The following week, after making NO changes, our logo disappeared.
With the resources that Google has availabe, there is no way anyone could convince me that it is taking them a year to solve this problem. The only possible answer is that they won't even bother to look into the
I've always been a huge supporter of Google when speaking to clients - small business owners, but I've lately been telling business owners quite the opposite... Google+ is a nightmare - don't use it. It's a subpar product and despite all the promotion that they are doing, Google won't provide any support when you encounter problems.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Ananda Kannan P||11/20/13 6:25 PM|
I think there is some serious issue with Google. They are making lives of business people worse than anything. Minus symbol is the worst symbol and it gives anyone a very bad impression. I tried deleting it but nothing helps.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/20/13 7:30 PM|
No affect so far from the "report abuse" approach.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||11/20/13 8:13 PM|
This is serious enough that perhaps someone should start a website with petitions to get this resolved.
Given the volume of people impacted, the site may pay for itself with ads :-)
The bottom line is that we are losing business. This does not affect everyone, only those who take the time to use Google+ and experiment trying to make things better for their site.
If they cannot delete the image, then remove the feature altogether.
The darn image is coming from somewhere, replace it with something more appealing that doesn't turn people off.
Our traffic has gone down significantly since this image started showing up.
Any ideas on how to get some attention into this matter as a group? We seem to have quite a few people interested in getting this resolved.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/20/13 9:09 PM|
I completely agree. Just so long as the ads aren't Google-driven, haha.
That is so true that this only affects those who are taking the time to use Google+, G+ Local, etc., to try and make things better for themselves.
Would love to hear what other people have to say about what we can do. Google most definitely don't care. The proof is in their lack of quality response to this thread. Haven't heard anything from Jade in a while either.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/20/13 10:06 PM|
What about some sort of carefully created press release, distributed through one of the online PR websites? That has the potential to get picked up by a lot of 3rd party sites. I know it costs money, but at this point, I would be wiling to allocate some funds to this.
That type of publicity might get someone from Google to at least address the issue.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/21/13 12:02 AM|
Guys! I think you are all deluded :)
Google offers a free service to promote your business, why would they bother fixing something that is not generating money for them. The only way they generate money is thru Adwords. Stop advertising "en masse", I have. They may then take heed.
There was a valid point earlier on about the fact that we take the time to use Google+ and make it work and that is how we get rewarded by Google. I also have a "no entry" sign myself but not only that...
By experience, I have noticed that the more you stick to the "rules" with Google, the more they f*ck everything up for you. The guys who flaunt the rules get "rewarded" everyday by being pushed to the top of the first page!
I'm a wedding photographer in Cambridge (UK). For at least 5 years, I was at the top of the local searches with no issues. In June 2012, I moved house, so I changed the address on my google places and google+ listing. From that day, I disappeared from the local searches altogether. I'm only just back there, despite my google local profile still being "pending review" despite entering the postcard code two months ago. How did I get back to where I was? I put back my old address in there! Despite not living there anymore.
I know many snappers who moved city, two or three times, never changed their address and still they show as being in Cambridge at their old address, Google pushes those to the top every time!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/21/13 10:12 AM|
You don't think that Google is able to monetize traffic to Google+ and Local+ pages? Just because they don't charge one party for use of a service doesn't mean that they don't earn revenue from it.
Our information is the reason that users are there in the first place - users are the reason for advertising, so our information IS indirectly responsible for revenue.
This aspect of Google is beginning to look like a low-quality directory... publishing inaccurate, erroneous or outdated information about businesses, earning revenue on advertising from those same businesses on a slightly different platform, but not caring enough to correct any information that is not 100% directly tied to advertising dollars.
I understand that Google+ is still very much in the early stages and lot of bugs need to be corrected, but this needs to be addressed. My company pays lots of money to Google every month. True, we do not pay to have our logo placed next to the map in local listings, but if I tried using this same type of argument with clients, I would be out of business within a year.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||accidentalobservist||11/21/13 1:06 PM|
Jade, I created a new business page and these are still popping up. No images were deleted. You are scamming google with your "abilities". You are a hack, as well as the rest of google (how complicated do these systems need to be?). Honestly, you should be fired. Fired and publicly shamed.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/21/13 1:15 PM|
I don't think we should blame Jade here. I doubt she is the person who is ultimately responsible for this.
She probably has a boss, who may or may not care about this problem, but who probably couldn't care less that she gets trashed in these forums.
I do agree that somewhere, someone is to blamed.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||11/21/13 1:32 PM|
One of my concerns has to do with rankings. Our ranking on maps has suffered since that image problem showed up. Our competitors ranking higher don't seem to have that problem. We went from 2-3 on page 1 to 4-5 on the second page after this issue. I guess we are not very presentable :-)
It is tough to run a large business with your profile picture being a no entry sign when your competition looks much more professional.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||curticusq||11/21/13 2:19 PM|
Jade cannot possibly be held responsible for anything that appears on anyone's profile. Coding errors happen.
I will however blame Jade 100% for the length of time that it has taken for this issue to not be resolved.
A big portion of Jades job involves advocating for and representing the users and I see no evidence whatsoever that she has done so.
The only action that I can imagine will garnish any tangible results would be to create a well-written publication that is thoroughly distributed throughout the net.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/21/13 2:36 PM|
You're so right.
We've really got to do something about this guys.
Google+ Local has been a massive problem for so many people for far too long.
Especially considering that it seems to affect those of us who are genuinely attempting to leverage the most out of our (or our client's) G+ Local / Google Places / Google +Whateverthef*cktheycallitnow --- it affects you. Want to try and freshen up your photos/image listing? You're stuffed. Want to change addresses / move your business? Hell no. Want to freshen up your logo image in the listing? Get stuffed.
Google simply does not care. And clearly the revenue stream that they must be getting out of it (as per the comment earlier) must be so negligible that they can't be stuffed taking action on this problem. Come on, we all know what it's like at these big companies. They higher young fresh grad's who haven't a clue what they're doing. Pay them rubbish but give them a fancy/funky office with a pool table for a meeting room (and all the other fancy crap Google does to attract employees) and peer pressure them to work excessive hours for the same pay on the half-promise of a bonus or perk come review-time.
The bulk of the staff don't seem to really know what they're doing (based on experience I won't elaborate on). The rest mustn't particularly care. Meanwhile the shareholders rake in the profits and the end-user (us) get taken for a ride. Till next year. When Google rolls out some other fancy new product to replace the existing G+ Local problem. Rather than fix it, they just replace it and chuck out the old. Anyone read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (ie. Bladerunner) ? ... it's the Kipple Effect.
Evidence? Well, look at the genuine history of G+ Local. Way back in 2007 or 2008, we had a Google Maps listing that we kept nicely up to date (even a couple reviews, which have since vanished thanks to Google). In 2011 we changed premises and it took about a year for any of that to be sorted out by Google - long phone calls, headaches, emails back and forth ... Eventually the new listing appeared with the new address. Then dropped off. Then came back as the old one. And so on. Then suddenly "Google Places" is launched with its clunky console. Suddenly problems were happening with Google Maps listings (mine included) trying to port over to Google Places. Before long G+ is announced and G+ Local not long after becomes what the "old" Google Places listings are supposed to be migrated to or merged with. Into 2012 problems cropped up with "pending review" appearing for those who attempted to update (or even start) a Google Places listing (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!mydiscussions/business/q-04-baCuWI). At one point our Google Maps listing/entry just totally vanished after receiving some random emails from Google "thanking me" for some queries I had raised (huh?). And all this mess started around there. You have a G+ Local listing, then when you try to "Manage this listing" you get thrown to a Google Places console that somehow attempts to feed content into the Local listing (and fails). You can't update your stuff without fear of images disappearing or turning into a "No entry sign". You can't really change your address without muck-ups there --- and forget about it if you are a Service-Area Based business with a private address. Google Places "sort of" supported this (but not really, there are bugs). And Google+ Local simply doesn't at all. So if you attempt to Verify your Google+ Local listing, in many cases you can stuff up your who G+ listing with a 500 Error and a dead page (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!mydiscussions/business/7U-mpxVx34M = 305 posts, 187 authors, 4389 views and counting ...).
Nope, Google does not care.
They will make some new product to replace the debacle with Google Places / Google+ Local, and then just get everyone to migrate across - like it or lump it. There'll be new bugs for the new system porting to the old one, and it'll just continue (just like Maps > Places > Local). Until the day comes when the everyday user starts to truly be impacted, and then they start marching off to other search-engines .... I don't know that there's all that much we can do.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/21/13 2:41 PM|
I agree with you 200% that a well-written and well-placed article detailing this issue is the best way to relocate the Egg.
It's the only method I can imagine that would get the attention of decision-makers at Google to correct the issue.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Pedro Catalao||11/21/13 2:54 PM|
Crowd funded awareness campaign against Google... I'd pledge on that!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/21/13 3:33 PM|
So would I.
I'd pledge it to a crowd-funded campaign by some prominent blogger/copywriter (or several?) who quotes us on the cost of a good package of press-releases, distributed it top locations and article banks internationally (not just in the US).
Then when we raise enough funds to cover their costs, they can cash in their kickstarter/crowd-funded campaign, do the work, and spread the word using their skills and expertise in the field of article distribution and media.
Even a simple Wordpress blog freebie can be started as a hub to collate all the article links as they make their way around the world. While it also acts a link resource directly to this discussion thread and any others that are on this exact same topic, or any topic at all to do with problems with Google Places / Google+ Local. Each of us could have authorship logins to be able to add our content to it over time, as we discover more and more discussion threads across the internet discussing the countless bugs. Something organised, neat and easy to do.
I dunno. Just tossing up ideas.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/22/13 7:49 AM|
I like it. I know someone who can write it and handle press releases. She would probably love to get quotes from some of us.
Does anyone know anything about KickStarter projects? I would be surprised if they allowed this type of project on their website. There must be other crowdsource funding options available.

I am very pleased with how this is shaping up.
For the better part of a year we have all spent our own time and effort to contribute our feedback on these forums.
So many times I have found myself writing yet another post on these forums, all the while questioning myself, and thinking; Why am I doing this again?
As we have all heard many times before, Einstein's definition of insanity was; doing the same things again and again, expecting different results.
We have a chance to take things in a direction that I finally feel will garnish real results.
On the technical end of things I really wish that I had more to contribute.
I will however continue to monitor the forums and will contribute in anyway that I can.
Let's keep the momentum going!!!!

I hope Daniel1980 doesn't mind that is used his last post as the summary for what the funding is for.
If so then I will edit it.
I set the goal to $2000
I have no clue if that is a lot or a little.
It seem on the high side of what I'd guess we would require. Feedback is welcomed there as well.

Hi everyone -- I know you are all frustrated with how long this is taking, but please know that we are really trying to get this resolved. Some listings that had the (-) for a deleted photo should be fixed, but, as you all know, not all of them have been fixed. We're continuing to pursue a solution for the remaining listings.

No one wants to hear it Jade. We have all heard it before too many times.
The time for waiting patiently has passed.
The time to take action has come.
The fact that you replied so quickly to this only serves to demonstrate exactly why this is the only logical next step.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/22/13 7:57 PM|
Personally, I think the description of the project should be more factual. Our goal here isn't to show everyone that we hate Google. There's so much of that type of language around the web, I don't think any more of it is going to get attention. As the young people say, "don' be haters."
I think a very accurate but non-hateful description of the situation and what we are trying to do would get a great response. I just want my logo back so that I don't look stupid in front of potential clients. I'm not trying to convince the world that Google sucks - I don't think anyone would fund that message, and I wouldn't blame them.
As for the price point, I'm not sure if $2000 is a good target or not - I a good PR person in NYC is about $100/hour.
Would anyone mind if I wrote a revised project description?

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 3:10 PM|
@PhoneFreaks - that's so true, we've waited and waited and we've just been fed a sentence or 2, if we're lucky, from Jade & Co., and there's been no results for too long. This isn't the only problem with Google+ Local.
@Jade W - please save it. Unless you have some solution for us, or you have a resolution to the problem - I doubt anyone is going to listen any more.
Let's put things into perspective === This thread has (so far) 196 posts by 52 authors (and over 1739+ views and counting) and was started on the 5th July 2013. Though users report issues going way back, and related problems with G+ Local (though I won't post all those here). You have contributed only 9 replies in all that time.
Your shortest post was 1 sentence. Your longest post was the most recent (Nov 23) which is 3 sentences. The average is 1.7~ sentences each post. These posts amount to little over 0.045% of all the posts in this entire thread running across nearly 4 months since it was started. None of your/Google's posts have any insight, or anything more to add than (on average) "we are still actively working on fixing this issue". In-fact, of the 9 posts, the only thing you have ever repeatedly said was: "we are looking into the delay" and "we are continuing to look into the delay", as well as "we are still looking into the issue with the gray (-) sign". On and on.
Your latest post simply states the same .... again.
Please don't take me wrong, I'm not attempting to attack you here, I'm merely stating these facts so that others reading this can understand why our collective frustration has boiled over and reached this point. The only information we have ever received from Google on this issue here is 9 uninformative and very repetitive posts - that amount to a very small fraction of the whole discussion in all this time.
As per PhoneFreaks comment ... we don't want to hear it anymore.
If it isn't something more substantial / informative or assists us in any way - or acknowledges our collective frustration - or confirms that Google is going to take these problems seriously (and not just this thread, but all the other G+ Local problems people are encountering) --- then please save the "copy/paste & paraphrase" routine that's been going on here with the responses. It's very tiring to hear the same thing over and over. Anyone reading this thread can go back and look at those responses and confirm how repetitive they all are.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 3:20 PM|
Actually, I just realised the second-half of that post isn't really relevant to a GoFundMe campaign ... plus there's link in there that go to other discussions on other G+ Local problems (that break, cause they're not the public versions of the URLs) ... so I'd suggest taking those out or re-adjusting that bit that personalises my experiences with the problem, thanks.
Mainly take out the bits that personalise the issue directly to me, cause that was part of my post. It's best to keep in just the bits that refer to the problem that everyone is experiencing generally.
Though I think Chris might currently be working on something.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Pedro Catalao||11/24/13 3:30 PM|
I think we should clearly direct the effort to the lack of support from google in general not to a specific issue.. stress out that issues that affect many users are not being addressed by google. We want everybody to identify with the cause not just the ones with the 'no entry' symbol issue.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 3:58 PM|
@Pedro - very true.
There are a number of issues that are mildly related to this one, but part of the overall problem that the Google Places > G+ Local merger has caused (and the Google Maps > Places legacy issues prior to that).
Though it might become a bit messy if we try to scatter-gun the topics in too many different directions.
I think as a starter we're going in a good direction. People should at least sign the petition by Chaz Witt (http://www.change.org/petitions/google-inc-fix-the-catastrophic-bug-causing-the-grey-no-entry-sign) for the "no entry sign" issue. Though with @curticusq's GoFundMe campaign that @Chris is also working on ... perhaps that would should also encompass what @Pedro is saying here with addressing some of the wider problems?
Not sure, just adding my 2-cents.
Though I think every bit counts and helps. So people - please sign the petition on Change.org too. This can be part of the collective campaign to raise awareness. Share it on social media and spread it via email chains to friends and colleagues. Meanwhile, the GoFundMe project can be honed till we find a suitable copywriter (Chris's friend?) who can take on the project.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||curticusq||11/24/13 5:23 PM|
I have edited the funding campaign to better represent the goal.
I have used much of Daniel's post for data and reference. (thanks)
I have also linked back to this forum which I feel is necessary and appropriate.
I feel the description sums it up well enough particularity since the vast majority of contributors will likely start from this forum anyway.
I've also mentioned the petition which I think is necessary though I don't know how effective it will be before awareness is substantially increased.
Lets keep the momentum folks.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 5:29 PM|
Brilliant, thanks Curtis.
I agree, the Petition and the GoFundMe campaign should all be utilised to their fullest potential. I've already started sharing the Petition on social media (via G+ Communities to get it some exposure) - and already people who are not affected by this issue are sharing it anyway in the hopes that it might help fellow businesses who experience this but had no idea this Discussion thread or campaign existed.

Sorry this took so long guys...
This uses some thoughts presented here already, with some organization and hopefully a call-to-action that will get some clicks, shares, likes and ulitmately donations to the FundMe project. By the way, I would make the project $2,500.
Please feel free to add, edit, recommend or fix any typos...
Daniel1980 - You had written a history of the Google+ platform somewhere in here, but I couldn’t find it. I think that would be a great addition here.
A Problem for Small Business Owners
Google forced business owners to use the new Google+ Pages by merging the original Google Maps listing with the Google+ platform. Being available in local listings (even if only when researching specific companies) is a near necessity for local business owners. It’s the equivalent of the phone book in the 70’s.
The problem is that Google provides zero support for business owners once users adopt the new system, even if they did not opt to use the new Google+ platform themselves.
The "No Entry” Logo
A recent thread in Google forums has 305 posts by 187 different authors and over 4,000 views. That means 4,000 people have found that thread, because they are likely looking for a solution to the same problem. Another thread has 196 posts by 52 authors and 1700+ views. A search for "no entry site:productforums.google.com" returns over 38,000 results.
In response to several thousand requests for support, Google has provided almost nothing.
The shortest response was 1 sentence. The longest post was 3 sentences. The average is 1.7~ sentences each post. These posts amount to little over 0.045% of all the posts in this entire thread running across nearly 4 months since it was started. None of Google's posts provide any insight, or anything more to add than (on average) "we are still actively working on fixing this issue." In-fact, of the 9 posts, the only thing you have ever repeatedly said was: "we are looking into the delay" and "we are continuing to look into the delay," as well as "we are still looking into the issue with the gray (-) sign."
After months of reading the same response, business owners have given up hope of any solution, support or explanation from Google.
A Simple Request
Business owners in this thread have lost revenue because of the problem and yet, Google barely even responds.
Please… If Google cannot make the service equal and provide logos to all participants, please remove all logos, or at the very least, leave the space blank.
When researching vendors, potential clients will almost always see these “no-entry” signs. Faced with a decision between vendors, would YOU prefer a company that has their logo displayed nicely next to their company listing in Google, or a company with the equivalent of a danger sign next to their business name?
The objective of this project is to raise awareness and let Google know that they cannot offer a service with flaws, force business owners to adopt a platform that damages their image and then refuse to provide support or respond requests for information.

That is excellent. If Daniel 1980 would kindly add the "history of" to the beginning I will post it to the funding project right away.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 7:20 PM|
Looking brilliant to me! Great stuff Chris.
With the history stuff, am not sure of exact dates - though in my experience with several clients (and my own business), this is more or less what we encountered (please re-word this as you see fit, as it's not written in the best format) ===
Years ago business could list with Google Maps. This was gradually rolled into Google Places and listings were merged. During this merger, some businesses encountered problems with the cross-over, and found errors such as "We currently do not support this location" and listings vanishing overnight. Other Places issues included "there is no data for your request" in the Dashboard and so on. These were typically associated with service-area only businesses, or those with a private address (ref: http://www.ngsmarketing.com/problem-with-areas-served-and-hiding-address-on-google-places/). Other listings simply had "review pending" for months without ever re-appearing in the Maps search results for the new Places for Business listings that everyone was forced to move over to. Eventually it appears Google began to migrate and merge accounts to Google+ Local listings as a result of all the trouble they had with Google Places and also as an attempt to forcibly position Google+ as the main driving force for mapped business listings online (and of course, increase the membership base of Google+ as a result, as everyone would need to activate their listings via the account). There have been a number of long standing issues with the Places > G+ Local merger, many taking over 12 months with no resolution in sight (also ref: http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/tags/googlebug.html). Those attempting to Verify and Manage their G+ listings were seeing 500 Errors (still not fixed as at this writing), to issues with logo images showing a grey no-entry sign, which also appears in Google Search results next to your business name, to the right of the results. Searching for "Google+ Local Problems" will give 6123 results on issues and bugs - the majority running for months without genuine resolution. Apparently Google is now offering the option (perhaps in future this will be mandatory) of merging a Google+ Business Page with the Google+ Local page - as referenced here (and noted as problematic): http://360phot0.com/merging-google-local-google-business-pages/ (this link also specifies the large amount of bugs with the system, and advises against attempting a merger if one of your listings Business or Local has existing problems). Much the same as the advise from Google on not attempting to Verify your G+ Business Page listing if you are a service-area based business, as this can throw a 500 Error and possible long-term corruption of your listing (a number of businesses have reported their listings vanish as a result).
MediaPost also published a news article over a year ago in July 2012, covering the then problems with Google+ Local that had been harming small businesses: http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/179038/ - much of this echoes through to the same problems businesses are experiencing more than 17 months since that press release.
Here is a major forum repository of all the current G+ Local bugs, problems, issues: http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/tags/googlebug.html
Here is a listing of useful resources and references to the wider problems experienced by SEO's and Businesses with Google+ Local (these also include some historical information on the shift from purely Google Maps > to Google Places > to G+ Local, and include long-standing issues going back into the 2012 roll-out of G+ Local):
The problems we have been highlighting here are not isolated incidents or localised to just a small number of business. As you can see from the tip of the iceberg in resource listings above, there is a very large number of affected users out there, and we believe a large proportion are made up of people who may not have voiced their concerns in the Google Forums or elsewhere and are either suffering in silence, suffering amongst a small group, or not sure how to reach out to a larger base of users who are collectively experiencing the same or similar types of issues without any resolution in sight.
Hope this helps you Chris.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/24/13 7:39 PM|
Great stuff - I like that list of resources.
Here's a sharper jpg for Project No-Entry.
Remember, if we don't donate ourselves, we can't expect anyone else to do it. If 100 authors from this thread donate $25 each, we're funded. Or 125 authors donate $10 and find a friend/colleague to match.
I think that's fair - donate money, effort or both. Any thoughts?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 8:13 PM|
Sounds good to me. I agree re: donate money / effort or both.
Same with the petition. I've already signed that and shared it around.
But I think Curtis needs to put somewhere on the GoFundMe listing something that makes it very clear about "what" exactly is being funded. Ie. - where is the money going to be spent, who will handle/control the money -- and what happens to a person's donation if the campaign doesn't go anywhere.
Otherwise, I think it'll be difficult to on-board people unless they're having major problems that identify directly with the description. And the vagueness on where the funds are going / and what happens if the target isn't reached, etc...
What do you guys think?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/24/13 10:38 PM|
Here's a draft for the Goal... just ideas at this point...
For business owners affected by the No Entry Bug, the only available action has been to request assistance from Google via Product Forums.
In the past several months, these attempts have had zero effect, with only minimal acknowledgment from Google. Those business owners have agreed to join together in a PR effort to get the attention of Google decision-makers so that the issue can finally be addressed.
The objective of this project is to hire a PR professional to:
a) Research and interview those businesses that have been affected
For more information, visit the following thread:
As small business owners, our brand image online is critical. All we want to do is have the capabilities as other businesses and not see our business suffer because of an issue that is not deemed important enough to correct.
Please help us achieve this goal by contributing funds to our PR campaign.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/24/13 11:11 PM|
Chris, this is brilliant. It's shaping up really well!
Guys, what do you think?
This is going in a really professional direction. So I think we might really have a chance of being listened to here. I'm seeing more and more feedback via social media where I've shared the Petition link. Am looking to share the funding link, but would rather wait till it's all polished up and ready to share around, so I leverage the most of it via my networks by sharing with them (the first time round) a well-polished GoFundMe page :-)
Thanks to everyone here for lending each other a hand in really taking this seriously and trying to make it work. Good on you all.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||11/25/13 12:14 AM|
So I have replaced the information on the funding page with what Chris wrote.
As it comes to mind for me now there are a couple things I want to clarify and clear up.
First, I have made some posts here as PhoneFreaks (info.pho...@gmail.com) which is the email that I use for my business. It's aliased as in...@phonefreaks.ca / www.phonefreaks.ca
My personal email is curt...@gmail.com which is the one I have used for most if my comments on here and to setup the fundme account.
Sorry if that's caused any confusion. A few times I logged in here as PhoneFreaks entirely in confusion. Anyway, the contact info on my website is all up to date and relevant and will serve to put a face to the handle.
Second, I think it's important at this point to agree on some reasonable alternative appointment for whatever money may be raised in the event that the goal is not met or Google fixes the issue (ya I know!) before it comes to d-day.
I propose we pick some charity or other type benefactor that would be listed in the "about" on the fundme.
At the end of the day, if it comes to that, I should be able to provide a link to some documentation detailing where and when the funds were handed over to their proposed end.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/25/13 4:42 AM|
I think I may have fixed the "no entry sign" issue.
It seems to work, right now, but then it may be temporary, as often in Google.
And it may not work for everyone.
Here are the resolution steps:
1. Open a Google Chrome browser. Sign in to your account as Manager.
2. Bring up the Google Plus About page.
3. Click the first "no entry" sign so that it displays on its own and you have the Rotate icons, Resize icon and the Bin icon, etc at the top.
4. Click the Bin icon.
5. Click Undo [When you click on the Bin icon, a tool tip comes up (yellow rectangle) near the Bin icon after you clicked it. "Undo" appears as a link in that tool tip].
6. You may have to click Restore / Restore Image.
Ta da !!!
Repeat for all your "no entry" sign images.
Please let me know if that works for you !!!
Mine have disappeared from: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/103617894425532940230/dashboard/overview#+Jeanlucbenazet/photos and have been replaced by my mug and my logo.
If my "no entry" sign resolution worked for you, can you add my business page @ https://plus.google.com/+Jeanlucbenazet#+Jeanlucbenazet/posts to your circles? And maybe +1 it ? :)
I will add you back and +1 you back.
Jean-Luc (the name is JEAN-LUC, not Jean)
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Dennis Wa||11/25/13 4:55 AM|
Thank you for the idea. Unfortunately it's not working on our profile. When I click the bin icon there is an error message and no option to click Undo or Restore.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/25/13 5:08 AM|
I suspect most/all of us will see what Dennis is seeing - another error. As I posited earlier, they can't seem to tell there's not actually an image there anymore. Why else would you have a trash can on a missing image?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/25/13 5:13 AM|
See my resolution post, I have just edited it.
It's unbelievable, just to think I may have killed that Monster, I'm shaking!!! :D
I've also found that link, which may explain why Google keep control over certain areas to do with photography: http://maps.google.com/help/maps/businessphotos/faq.html
Cheers and good luck !

Finally comes the fix. Jean Hats off :) Just follow the following steps by Jean,
Step 1: Login into your page as manager.
Step 2: Click on about us Tab
Step 3: You will see pictures with minus icon
Step 4: Click on Dust bin icon on the top
Step 5: Immediately click on undo
Step 6: You will see your image back
This worked for me :) If you have queries feel free to ask and create best impression on your business place to your customers.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||11/25/13 7:27 AM|
@ Jean-Luc Benazet
What is the "undo button"?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/25/13 7:40 AM|
There is not a Undo button per say, when you click on the Bin icon, some kind of tool tip comes up (wish I had taken screenshots!) which comes in the shape of a yellow rectangle near the Bin icon after you clicked it. "Undo" appears as a link in that tool tip. Some people in here do not seem to see it at all :/
When I tried to remove my "no entry sign" images in the past, I tried to click on the bin, then check the bin and it was empty. I never got an error after clicking the bin.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||11/25/13 7:53 AM|
I don't know what you're seeing but I do not see anything like that.
If I go to my page for instance and view it as a visitor, I see 5 tabs;
About, Posts, Photos, Video, Reviews
I click Photos.
The "No entry logo" is listed under "All photos of Phone Freaks"
I click that icon and I get the viewing window that has been spoken of where I can view a large version of it.
There are some links above it including Slideshow, More, Rotate L, Rotate R, Magnify, Delete.
If I click Delete I simply get a message in white text displayed against a red background that reads as follows;
"Your photo could not be deleted. Please try again".
There are no options, buttons or links of any kind.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/25/13 7:57 AM|
You may have to do this first: I had actually tried that step previously and it may or may not have influenced the resolution
Open Google Chrome.
Install the Picasa Add-On.
Open Picasa. Choose the My Photos tab.
There, locate the images that later became no entry signs, if they can be located at all.
For each of them, click on the image > Actions menu > Album Properties > Visibility > Set to "Only You" > Click "Save Changes".
That step is exactly how I did it, but maybe changing the visibility to "Only you" may influence how the image is displayed later, so you may have to go back and change that to "Public on the web".
Repeat as often as needed.
Then follow the steps from before again...
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Pedro Catalao||11/25/13 7:59 AM|
I don't have the bin icon... it seems images added through the places dashboard (which are marked "from the owner" in the gallery) can't be deleted in google plus.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Christian Parley||11/25/13 8:17 AM|
Jean-Luc's process worked.
Step 1: Login into your problematic page as the manager.
Step 2: Click on "About Us" tab,
Step 3: You will see the profile pictures, click on the "No Entry" icon photo, which will bring it up in it's own window,
Step 4: Click on the "dust bin/garbage can" icon on the menu bar
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/25/13 8:22 AM|
This is what I see before I click the bin...
and after I click the bin this is what I have...
The text "Moving photo to trash..." appears (very) briefly before the above one.
Note that the available options are reduced as well, rotating is gone (so you don't need to waste your time trying to rotate it, but feel free to keep trying to delete it).
I suspect some of us cleared the image out of our trash too (permanently deleting the image), and Jean-Luc's process requires the image to be still in there so that it can be restored.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Christian Parley||11/25/13 8:36 AM|
But of course, Peter. It's an obvious bug with no simple one-fix. Not that this is actually. More of a patch really. But thanks, Jean-Luc.
This does shed light on how difficult a coding issue it must be, though. Not to be an apologist for them, as this should be a high-priority if Google intends to court businesses to Google+. But it's looks like one of those "whack-a-mole" situations.
The image that reappeared on my client's is from last year 2012. He's a quality Chinese restaurant that changes his themed logo to fit the New Year (Dragon-2012, Snake-2013, Tiger-2014). His patrons love it and wait to see the new artwork he's chosen. google.com/+JimyWens (Please +1 it!)
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when his new "Year of the Tiger" logo is brought in to his G+ page. Should be thrilling.

How did you get your page to be featured on the right hand side, like that?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/25/13 9:51 AM|
The GoFundMe page is looking nice. My last message, I didn't mean to replace the entire description with that goal segment - I thought that would just be the last "call-to-action" section. It's up to you guys though - whatever you think looks best. I can paste it all together if you want, or load it up there myself - whatever's easiest.
For the fix to the no-entry sign...
Keep an eye on that even if you get it to work. We got ours working about a month ago using a different method. A week later, however, it disappeared.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Peter J McGowan||11/25/13 9:54 AM|
It might be an idea to change the title of this thread from "'No entry' symbol for missing photo's" to "'No entry' symbol for permanently deleted photo's"? It appears there's a workaround solution for images which are still in the trash (undo the delete, as per Jean-Luc), but nothing as of yet for the latter. There should certainly be a large (DON'T DELETE IMAGES PERMANENTLY) on the title - I'm sure a few people will be on this thread before they go as far as trying the permanent delete as a solution unwittingly making their situation worse.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/25/13 10:06 AM|
On the right hand side ? Like my attachment ? You need to be listed in the Local results, then click on the chevron arrows, and it displays on the right.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/25/13 2:51 PM|
That's looking good. Though I notice that the link to the Petition looks muddled and reveals a bit of coding (eg. target="_blank" etc.) instead of the link directly: http://www.change.org/petitions/google-inc-fix-the-catastrophic-bug-causing-the-grey-no-entry-sign
I think it's shaping up really nicely. Great idea re: donating the funds if we don't reach our goal. I think the target amount might be a bit high ... but it's not like we're in any major rush - Google hasn't lifted a finger in months, and for other general G+ Local issues going back a year, Google hasn't even lifted a finger at all (except maybe the middle finger).
People I think we need to get back on track here.
Thank you to Jean-Luc for the solution that works for some people. But for those of us affected by the Google Places > G+ Local merger, this doesn't work at all. The reason why is because if you attempt to click "manage your listing" that appears in G+ Local, you immediately get thrown into the old dashboard for Google Places. Where any changes you make have zero effect (or make things worse).
If we attempt to install Picasa Add-On, or anything like that, the only editable Albums we have access to are ones we create natively in Google+. But --- the original "Google Places" photo/photo-album created in the legacy Places listing, is not appearing unfortunately as a manageable album in Picasa Photos for your G+ account overall.
If you attempt to visit the photos (while logged in), the only option you see is next/prev arrows at the bottom, and at the top Slideshow and More (which simply shows Report Abuse). That's it. No rotate, no trash :-(
Now let's get back to working out how we can lobby Google to paying attention to this issue. The aftermath of the Google Places > G+ Local merger have far-reaching consequences for many people, and are not just limited to the "no entry signs" - but make for an extremely buggy experience. You can browse any of those links I posted earlier to see how many long-standing issues (12+ months) are still causing problems for people.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Southern Star Inspections, LLC||11/25/13 9:00 PM|
I can attest that selecting the "problem" photo< selecting the trash can< and selecting "undo" does in fact bring the picture back. The picture shows on Google "places" (i.e. maps. local, whatever it is called!) My problem is it is the very first picture I uploaded when I opened my Google Business account. The picture was the original logo I had for my company. There was a reason why I deleted it...I ended up going with another logo design. This logo does not represent my company any longer.
So...if this picture stays (I do not believe it will because I have beat the system before and had my new logo show for a couple weeks at a time, several times before it would disappear. Do not ask me how) how do I remove it completely? How can I get rid of it and add a current logo/picture that represents my company now that I have got it off the ground and running?
Jade, please help. It seems we have found away around it (temporarily) but need further guidance. Can it not be set up so that the most recent photo added by owner in a designated spot be the picture selected when a potential client searches our business?
How a box labeled "search photo" or something along those lines within the Google places/local/business dashboard? We have profile pictures and such, why not an slot for this picture we are all having so many issues with?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/25/13 9:14 PM|
Hi Southern Star,
Can you take a screen-capture of the trash-can you see, and also, can you take a screen-cap (blur out the private info) of your "dashboard". I just want to double-check something.
Because those of us who are still stuck with the "old" Google Places Dashboard (which is a totally different thing) cannot edit the photos, because we do not see the Trash Can at all.
It appears that only those of you who have the ability to edit those same photos in Picasa or via managing the Google+ Local (which is a separate thing to Places) listing, are able to see the Trash-can and make the appropriate restore changes.
For the rest of us, the trash-icon does not appear, because the album of photos isn't even available to us via the Picasa Add-on, because it appears that the original photos uploaded via the legacy Google Places Dashboard are not ported over to the albums created in the Picasa Photos option of the new Google+ Accounts (and hence, any Google+ Local listing you manage).
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/26/13 4:38 AM|
I do not understand what some of you talk about when they say my fix works only because I still have my images in Picasa. I don't. I have a few, but not all the ones that showed as "no entry signs". Also, the Bin icon was not always appearing when displaying individual "no entry signs", only from time to time, so I suggest you persevere.
I would try my fix attempt using different browsers: ie. IE, Safari, Chrome and even Opera, etc.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||11/26/13 12:17 PM|
Hi, Jean Luc B,
Your fix does work, to a certain extent, but I wouldnt call it an entire fix of the bug. I have the new dashboard, so I am among the lucky few.
However, although that horrible grey stop sign is no longer there, thanks to your instructions, the five photos on the 'about' page are not the
ones I want to be there. They are the ones I deleted in the past, and have now returned. We still do not have the choice of which photos to
put in those boxes. I tried to change them, but cannot delete them. They keep coming back. There is definitely still a bug there. But I do have
to thank you for finding out how to get rid of the Stop sign. At least there is now a real photo there, even though it is not the photo I want!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||11/26/13 12:46 PM|
Well mate, I said I fixed the no entry sign, and that's it. Various people will have other issues, but for me that is good enough even though I cannot control the image that displays in its place. At least it does not say, closed for business.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/26/13 5:24 PM|
Ummm .. Jean-Luc I'm sure your fix works fine for you, and that's great. And I'm sure there are many other people out there who it has helped to some degree (perhaps they don't have a G+ account in use so they can +1 you). But for others, the fix doesn't work as the options are not available.
The impression your messages give is that you've become annoyed with people on this thread. That's not really in the spirit of FOSS advocacy and the free exchange of knowledge on the internet. Yes Places and Local are "free" products offered by Google, and we are freely exchanging ideas on how we can fix this issue and pressure Google (who have a complete monopoly on the modern way of getting your business "out there" online) to pay attention to presenting more polished products.
You got upset earlier that no one had +1'd your post. But if it was not beneficial to others, then why would they? Also - if you only reason for posting it here was so that you could get a +1 ... then that's really not in the spirit of things. A +1 is really not any sort of value.
The free exchange of knowledge on the net is supposed to be like karma I guess. Where you just continue to freely share ideas with people who support FOSS technologies in the hope that if the majority of people do this, eventually when you're in a jam yourself one-day - you will find that one nugget of golden advice on how to fix it buried in the far corners of Google Cache or on some obscure forum post. That's how the internet itself has grown to such an extent. If we all hold onto our knowledge or findings, then the internet itself doesn't grow and free exchange of knowledge is dead in the water.
I'm sorry to see you take that kind off approach, and please don't misinterpret this message as some kind of attack on you. It's quite the opposite. Am just trying to point out that your not acting in the spirit of things. Your fix/work-around works to a limited extent for some people as far as we can tell so far. Getting upset that people aren't praising you for this fix (that only assists a percentage of those affected) isn't the answer.
Just my 2-cents.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/26/13 6:36 PM|
@PhoneFreaks, thanks - yeah it was very tempting not to be tactful.
But I just wanted to avoid a situation where this thread descends into some kind of flame war over silliness and ego. Then it doesn't address the key issues that this Discussion is trying to solve, throws a spanner in the works and ruins it for everyone.
And it would also give Google the impression that we're all just going to cannibalize each other anyway over a bug - and would serve only to convince them to continue ignoring the issue. Anything that shifts the focus away from Google would then be a good thing for those responsible for ironing out creases like the bugs in Places/Local.

Guys. Sorry for what may have looked/sounded like an ego trip. I realised I was not reasonable myself and deleted those comments before anyone had the time to reply.
I have a month old baby at home, and clearly the lack of sleep is getting back at me. Somehow.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/26/13 8:43 PM|
No problems. I totally understand. Wait till they turn 2! Then they'll really drive you up the walls, hahah.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||`Keenan||11/26/13 11:07 PM|
@Jean-Luc - don't feel bad I've posted thousands of times, no one ever +1's my posts.
Just dropping in to make sure you guys are looking at your page in PUBLIC view or while NOT logged in to G+. Often you will find the No Entry image does not show up on the Public page.
But it will show up when you are logged in to G+ even though you are NOT viewing the page as a Manager.
Just something else to look for.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||11/27/13 1:46 AM|
Jean Luc, I have plus 1'd your google+ page.... as I know all these things help to keep you at the top in the search listings and that is what
all this is really all about. I still think the only solution will be for Google to have some real competition. That would make them pull their socks up.
At the moment, we are all too desperate for our businesses to do well on Google - one day things will change, but who knows when. In the meanwhile , Im happy to help in any way I can.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/27/13 8:31 AM|
Guys - have we lost momentum on this?
I have two clients who will likely donate funds to our campaign, but we need to keep moving with it. Those two clients are also having problems...
One just had his Google+ business address randomly changed to something that is completely incorrect except that it shares a unique term in the address line.
The other client had 52 positive and legitimate Google+ reviews reduced to 6. I have other clients who have had this experience.
I think this could be a press-worthy a story, but we need to keep things moving.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||11/27/13 8:36 AM|
Absolutely. It's been a busy couple days for me but what is needed by myself?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/27/13 9:10 AM|
1. We need to keep progressing with the GoFundMe page. I realize people get busy at different times, and with one person as the Admin, we won't be able to avoid times when the process slows down. Is there someway that a few different people can administer that page?
2. According to my PR person, a story that documents multiple Google+ Page problems will get media attention more easily that a single issue like the No Entry sign. Our clients have had at least 3 different types of problems, in addition to this No Entry bug.
None of them have been addressed or explained by Google. Does anyone have additional examples of problems with the Google+ Pages?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||11/27/13 9:14 AM|
The issue or randomly disappearing and reappearing reviews has been an ongoing issue also. I have definitely had some experience with that one. More than once in fact.
As for the gofundme page, I will look right now.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||11/27/13 9:23 AM|

i found this thread with a reference post on g+ of another user who is having similar troubles and I joined the discussion as I do to. I have been contacting google since several months now.
I uploaded fortunately several photos in my local listings so its still showing the company logo plus the no entry one.
Now to your part "Does anyone have additional examples of problems with the Google+ Pages?"
My other problem is that my local business listing pin on google map is correctly positioned for the island Mauritius but the address says California USA. My local g+ page is verified and this was done with the postcard that we received from Google. For credibility its not good that our clients see a wrong address which makes them wonder of our seriousness. Clients will wonder and mostl likely think that we are not even able to properly input our own address... :/
I reported the error, now there is a duplicate pin with correct address. But its not connected to any g+ page...
I have given it another try in contacting google on the page: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/business
Let's see if there will be soon light at the end of the tunnel!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||11/27/13 11:48 AM|
Is there noone who has posted on this board, who has a PR company or has experience of doing PR? It surely cant be that difficult to write a Press Release and send it round to the various newspapers ? Do we really need to collect money in order to do this?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/27/13 1:30 PM|
Nope, momentum hasn't been lost on my end, that's for sure. Just remember though that some of us are in different timezones. So my phone usually blips in the middle of the night with messages from you guys on this thread ... my working day only just started now.
@Chris re: the links to other stuff --- yep, in my previous messages on this thread I listed a couple. In addition to that long list of links to press releases / forum messages and general blog posts that others have put up since June 2012 --- there's a lot of general Google+ Local and Places problems listed in those. I'll re-post them here in a sec all in one message to make it easier for you guys to look at. I seriously reckon at least the bulk of them should go on the GoFundMe page somewhere (not sure if it allows other documentation) --- not necessarily the front page ... but somewhere so that it can legitimize our complaints by showing that these problems have been on-going for over 17+ months in some capacity in a variety of areas and not just the "no entry sign".
@Dietmar -- hmm, more problems. Okay, I suggest you google the Google Discussions to see if someone else has started a similar thread to that other problem you encounter. If no, start your own one and then share the link to it with us here. This way we can add it to our growing list of other problems that Google Places and Google+ Local have generally.
@PhoneFreaks --- yeah I'll re-post those links in a sec, and I remember seeing amongst them the Reviews-disappearing bug going back to at least July 2012, am sure of it. Actually I think it was one of the very first and original problems that Google Places > G+ Local merger had.
@`Keenan -- thanks for the suggestion. Though unfortunately I've tried that before, and it doesn't matter if you're logged in or viewing as Public, the dreaded "no entry sign" is always there. I'm fairly sure I'm speaking for most of us here when I say that too.
I'll dig up that list guys and will re-post it here in a moment.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||`Keenan||11/27/13 1:32 PM|
It would be better to keep the topics in this thread limited to issues surrounding the No Entry image appearing on the page.
If you have any another issue, please start a new thread.

If you think this system is ever going to work perfectly, you're living in a fantasy world.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/27/13 1:41 PM|
Here are the links I dug up:
Here is a major forum repository of all the current G+ Local bugs, problems, issues: http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/tags/googlebug.html
MediaPost also published a news article over a year ago in July 2012, covering the then problems with Google+ Local that had been harming small businesses: http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/179038/ - much of this echoes through to the same problems businesses are experiencing more than 17 months since that press release.
Into 2012 problems cropped up with "pending review" appearing for those who attempted to update (or even start) a Google Places listing (http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/business/q-04-baCuWI)
October 2011 - Google Places listings completely vanishing: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2011/10/07/google-places-alert-another-ugly-bug-that-could-nuke-your-listing/
If you attempt to Verify your Google+ Local listing, in many cases you can stuff up your who G+ listing with a 500 Error and a dead page (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!searchin/business/500$20Error$20when$20trying$20to$20verify$20social$20local$20Google$2B$20page$3F/business/7U-mpxVx34M/GGffSI6JWBcJ = 305 posts, 187 authors, 4436 views and counting ...).
Also -- refer to my post in this thread on Nov 25 for more details.
Plus all these:
Here is a listing of useful resources and references to the wider problems experienced by SEO's and Businesses with Google+ Local (these also include some historical information on the shift from purely Google Maps > to Google Places > to G+ Local, and include long-standing issues going back into the 2012 roll-out of G+ Local):
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||`Keenan||11/27/13 1:45 PM|
@Daniel1980 - I wasn't suggesting that it would be the case for everyone. But everyone should still log out of G+ and look at the page.
I have a listing right now that shows the No Entry symbol while I am logged in to G+, viewing as a Manager even viewing as Public, but it doesn't show while I am logged out or while logged in as another user.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/27/13 1:59 PM|
@`Keenan - no problems, no I totally understood what you meant. It's just that unfortunately for many of us on this particular thread we've tried these little tricks, but to no avail :-(
Actually your situation sounds even stranger, haha. I think I've read someone else with a similar thing, though must be rare or under-reported. *Sigh* hopefully one day things will get fixed. Though judging by the catastrophes of "mergers past" in the list of bug links I posted, some dating back to 2011, I have very strong doubts that any "new" system Google migrates to is going to be any better. In-fact, I dread it like I dread a VirtueMart update, haha! (Joomla devs will get the reference).... new stuff to patch over the old and it just makes more bugs than it's worth (eg. Maps listings to Places listings, then Places listings to G+ Local listings ... etc...)
@Chris - I think the list I posted 2 messages back is super definitive. Let me know if you want any other resources. Though doing a simple search in Google Product forums for "google+ local problems" or "google+ local issues", etc., will bring up countless threads.
@PhoneFreaks - what do you think of the list? Do you have any other good links you've noticed, that you can add to it?
I think this one is a great resource - it's a whole forum dedicated to any kind of #googlebug - http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/tags/googlebug.html
(It includes another a bug-report on it from December 2012 about the "no entry sign" issue here (ie. missing photos): http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/nap-categories-dashboard-data/1601-another-missing-photo-bug.html -- I haven't searched deep enough in the forum to find the other bug-reports on that same issue, though am sure it's there somewhere).
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Chris Dawkins||11/27/13 2:11 PM|
Daniel - that list was fantastic. Seems there are plenty of resources out there. We need to come up with an angle to pitch. Including everything is obviously overwhelming. I can speak to my PR person and ask what type of angle publishers will most likely bite on. My though initially is something like:
Google Forces Small Business into a Tight Corner
Forcing business to use a system with so many bugs and no support is wreaking financial havoc for many small business owners.
Also, I have a couple clients who are ready to donate and give quotes/interviews for a story.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/27/13 2:39 PM|
Sounds great to me. I like that angle!
See what the PR person says about additional ancillary stories (cause I'm quite sure for $2500, they'd do more than just create 1 article ... cause I have a Copywriter on staff and I know the current market rate for articles and distribution --- the $2500 to me looks like a full PR agency package, which is perfect and exactly what we need).
Anyway --- see if the PR person says about other side stories on "Google abandons small business" or leaves small business in the lurch ... basically pointing out how they roll out these free products they know the vast bulk of small business are going to use --- in order to consolidate further their position as the number #1 search engine and eventually directory/listing engine for business listings --- but only to leave them in the lurch for not only months, but years on end! Just some food for thought. Getting to the core of the problem and just outright stating the facts (because 17+ months to correct compounding issues with platform, on-top of another failed platform that the new platform was supposed to fix, is just plain ridiculous in my opinion).
In any case, the fact that it affects small business, is likely to garner a heck of a lot of attention in social media and in the media generally.
Keep us posted on what your PR people say.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jade W||11/27/13 3:12 PM|
As Keenan states, it would be a bit easier on the Top Contributors and myself if we could keep this thread to discussion about the "no entry" photo issue. I've pinned this thread to the top of our forum so that people who are experiencing this issue can easily find it and view updates from me and potential workarounds to other affected users like yourself. Everyone is certainly welcome to discuss other issues with Google Places here, whether they are past, current, ongoing, or even future, but it might be better done in a new thread.
That said, I took a look at Daniel1980's list and wanted to make a few clarifications. Daniel1980's words are in italics.
This article appears to be mostly about reviews not appearing. We won't show reviews that we think are spam. From feedback from this forum (among other places) throughout 2012, we actually were able to make some adjustments to our spam detection algorithms to show more reviews. You can read about that here.
The linked thread is about analytics not appearing for a week or so in July 2012. The original poster noted that they started working again on July 16, 2012.
Daniel1980 then makes a comment about a separate issue -- a listing disappearing from the dashboard. From a quick read of the summary, my guess is that the listing was removed for guideline violation, in specific, use of a PO Box. This is explicitly not allowed in the Google Places Quality Guidelines (please see under Business Location).
Mike's blog post here is actually about a setting in the old Places dashboard that auto-checked the option to hide a business address, specifically for service-area businesses. We actually require service-area businesses who do not meet customers at their business location (for example, a pool maintenance company who only goes out to the pools) to hide their addresses. This is also stated in our quality guidelines, also under Business Location.
Ah, I recognize this thread. We believe that this is much less common than it was a year ago, when I first made that post, and we used that thread to make changes to the product that would decrease that error. The causes of this error were diverse, if I recall correctly, but I offered some potential solutions here.
I couldn't load this page so cannot comment.
We also don't comment about rankings.
First issue (pending for longer than usual after verification) was resolved in January 2013 and was a delay in the backend, as I stated in the thread that Linda links to in that post.
This article covers how difficult it is to get the #1 spot in ranking. We agree that it's difficult, but there is only one #1 spot. The article briefly touches on the 30-point Zagat rating scale, which is actually gone and has been replaced with a 5 star rating scale. Hopefully that is less confusing for reviewers and merchants.
This article covers the difficulty of ranking well, which, see above. It also notes that listings can be penalized for violating the quality guidelines. We really recommend that you take a look at those guidelines and make sure any listings you manage adhere. It also notes that getting customer service from Google is difficult. We hope that's changed since then, since we launched phone support!
Got general data issues on a listing, or spot them while panning around Maps? Please report them to us by clicking on Edit details under the info card on the listing.
Descriptions not appearing is being fixed gradually. Following Linda's links, I find this thread, where the OP's description has come through.
This looks to be a how-to post on using Google+ to manage your business presence.
I believe this user's issue has been resolved (post #10).
This is actually about our launch of phone support (has since been expanded since the publishing of this article).
Nyagoslav is reporting a bug that occurred in 2011, which has since been fixed.
More about reviews, which I expanded on earlier int his post.
My advice for those in social verification limbo are actually mentioned in this article. We also actually recommend that users wait for the auto-upgrade and merge instead of attempting themselves to avoid situations like these.
Nyagoslav is writing about an issue that was current in 2011 but has since been fixed.
The author makes some good general recommendations to improve Places, touching on the difficulty for agencies to verify for their numerous clients and the difficulty of verification. All good points, I think, and definitely pain points we've discussed when planning for the future.
This is an SEO giving some advice to businesses who operate out of homes. Please note that the first and third offered solutions would be guideline violations for a Google listing.
Issues 1 and 2 have been fixed. Issue 3 is referring to the Google search interface, which changes regularly.
More discussion about reviews, please see my above note.
Linda writes about how the various interfaces/types of pages can be confusing to a new users. We agree, and we're working on migrating users to the new dashboard, which integrates better.
This is about the service area business / checkbox for hiding address issue that I noted above.
Whew. I just wanted to offer some clarification and context about the grab bag of issues presented, and it was an interesting walk through the past for me. Though it may not alway seem like it, we do hear/see your reports and work on improving the situation.
For the "no-entry" photo bug in particular, we are seeing some action from the teams involved in finding a solution and eagerly await a fix.
Happy Thanksgiving to those that are celebrating,
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||11/27/13 3:40 PM|
Wow, thank you Jade.
Finally a comprehensive reply from a Google rep on this thread :-)
No seriously, thank you for taking the time to actually look through this and obviously read through the other comments we've been posting here in our table-tennis discussion on what we should do.
A lot of those links were an attempt to create some kind of historical resource on the on-going frustrations many people have been having with what some bloggers called a bug-ridden set of products (Places and now G+ Local it seems).
I'll spend some time later today going through your responses, as actually some of them are relevant to other clients of ours who are experiencing different sorts of issues, though part of the same overall buggy-ness of what they're finding with Places/Local.
Also, in a quick ref to the service-area stuff and hiding private addresses for those businesses that need it --- there's actually a bug in Google Maps that I am not sure has been reported (I've not googled or binged around for it yet ;-) --- an I might post a new thread if I see it.
Basically if you set your business address to hidden for whatever reason (ie. you don't take client appointments on-premises, and/or it's a private address, or you're a consultant) --- then yes, Google "hides" your address (except suburb/postcode) in Maps & Local. However! If you use Google Maps (on desktop or via an app, eg. Android) as you start to type in a businesses name, in the "suggested" results if you see a listing for the business you want and that business has actually set their address to hidden, I guarantee you that you can see the Street Address in the suggestion, as well as Suburb and Postcode.
This appears to have began only after G+ Local became the default go-to for business listings when you guys attempted to merge Places with Local. So ... not sure where that bug fits, if it's a Maps bug (I think so) or a Maps bug caused by Local and or Places dashboard feeding data to Local (ie. "hide this address") incorrectly.
Anyway, got to get back to work. But once again, thank you for showing us some attention here on this thread. We and our clients desperately need it.

No entry image has been replaced with another image on my Knowledge Panel. I didn't do anything in particular recently. As I noted a few weeks back, I did follow that advice to use the "Report Abuse" feature (I reported it, repeatedly over a few days, and had some other people report it too). If you haven't done that yet I'd say give it a try, it didn't do me any harm.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||12/3/13 4:20 PM|
I seem to have managed to get one of my images back from the dead using the method I posted on November 25 on here.
Click on one of your entry sign, but not the first one (the one most to the left).
Try and rotate it, and this time you should get the error message: "Oops... an error has occurred." instead of the usual "Oops… the system encountered a problem (#500) - Retrying in 1s…"
Then click the bin icon, and the system will tell you it has successfully been sent to the bin, then choose Undo.
The original picture will be restored to your album!
It does not seem to work for the very first image yet (the one that also displays in local results). Will keep you posted.

|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||12/7/13 4:37 PM|
Any updates from Google on this?
This stuff is very serious. Google is inadvertently hurting businesses by placing a 'No entry' symbol as their profile picture.
They need to either disable the profile pic feature across the board or use a different default image.
This is a very serious matter that could potentially drive small businesses that depend on Google traffic to bankruptcy.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||12/7/13 5:15 PM|
No. No update, replies or any other indication that Google is making any effort at all to address this situation.
By all accounts, it seems that the problem will persist for the foreseeable future.
It's been going on so long and has cause myself and my business so much grief that I have taken up cause and given up more than once.
I'm back to giving up.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||12/7/13 7:07 PM|
1. If I delete my local page, would the problem go away if I recreate it?
2. If so, is the penalty of deleting the page (reviews gone, ranking???) worth the benefits of not having a 'No-entry' sign?
The advise from Google is not to delete this page.
The consequences of following that advise are huge when you are the only business with a 'no entry' image. That in my opinion is not worth any reviews and perhaps even starting from scratch in the rankings. It doesn't do me much good to rank high with a no-entry sign.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||PhoneFreaks||12/7/13 7:17 PM|
I feel for you. Believe me..., I can empathize.
The fact of the matter is this;
As far as I can tell (I don't believe I am alone), Google does not care about this problem.
Google is not going to save the day.
I believe they barely even know it is an issue.
By my account, the only person who is going to look after your interests is you and therefore you'll have to do what you feel is best for you and your business.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||12/8/13 2:15 PM|
Yeah I agree.
@Stacy LeClair ... Google don't care. You can try to send reports but they'll never get back to you, and if they do, it'll be a generic robot response that has little meaning and most of the time will not really be solving your issue. It'll just inform you that they have acknowledged your report. We've done this in the past and waited months, with no solution eventuating.
Like I've said in the past, Google is just holding out till they roll out some other (buggy) product that will replace the Google+ Local disaster (which replaced the Google Places disaster).
It's the "band-aid effect".
They just keep hiding the problems by replacing them with something else, rather than trying to fix something.
And don't hold your breath waiting for a response here from someone at Google. For months this thread was barely given any attention except for some "we are looking into it" type of rubbish responses. Eventually we had to start a Change.org campaign, and also a GoFundMe Campaign as well, and finally listing links to reports of countless bugs and problems people have experienced with Places and Local (some fixed, others not, others outdated --- but all to serve the point of showing how messy Local has become and how frustrated people have been for so very long with a series of products launched to market that have such influence in the world of online visibility these days for businesses, that irrespective of whether or not the "products" are free, they genuinely hurt businesses because of their buggy-ness and that they were launched half-assed).
After doing the Change.org campaign, the GoFundMe Campaign, and then listing all the links in this thread .... we actually got some attention and some response (that was more than 2 sentences, literally) from someone at Google.
So unless you're willing to go to ridiculous lengths like that, unfortunately you shouldn't be holding your breath for anyone at Google to care what you have to say. (And, bare in mind that Google still doesn't really care what we have to say .... they just "working on it" ... yeah, months and months and months down the track). I've honestly dealt with a lot of different platforms, commercial / open-source / freeware / whathaveyou ... and I've never come across anything that can possibly take this long for a small fix (even to roll out a temporary solution by changing that darn "no entry symbol" into something less confronting!). Seriously, it couldn't possibly take so long for something as big as Google to change a single image as an interim measure while they "work" on a solution (which I'm sure many here would agree, we sincerely doubt Google is even working on any fix). Just some new platform. Something to replace it or "band-aid" the problem.

Your little trick helped and the places entry, when looking for our company via google search, now shows our logo instead of the annoying "no-entry" image.

This worked out for me - I have quite a handful so I hope Google fixed this soon too.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||12/11/13 8:48 AM|
Okay guys... Always happy to help.
NOW, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL HAVE THE "NO ENTRY" SIGN ISSUE. READ ON:
I have tried to remove mine since November 25th, after fixing it, but then trying what some of you were experiencing and removing the picture from my bin forever, and then getting a #500 error when trying to rotate the no entry sign, or the dreaded red message saying something like: "Cannot delete, this picture does not exist" when trying to remove it.
The "No entry sign" is gone!
As of this morning, I may have found a very simple fix. After playing with the bin and rotate buttons for a while to no avail, I did this:
Using Google Chrome, click this button (with the three horizontal bars) and choose History or type Ctrl+H.
There, click "Clear browsing data".
In the drop-down list, choose from "the beginning of time". I left all the ticks as on the screenshot.
Click "Clear browsing data". Leave this to do its magic.
When I came back to the Photos tabs, my "no entry sign" was gone! Along with my logo image which I had managed to restore last week.
Now, in the search results, I get a WEDDING PHOTOGRAPH at last!
Please tell me that works for you guys !!!
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Vijay Kantavil||12/11/13 9:09 AM|
Glad it works for you but it doesn't work for me even the previous method only works for some photos and not all, and I can't be fussed going through my entire library clicking on them one by one.
You can achieve the same results as running in incognito mode as clearing browser data/cache - and for me it doesn't show any difference.
I suspect these bugs are due to the Picasa and G+ Photos consolidation - I expect the service to return functioning as normal once the merger is complete and Picasa is retired so will just wait till that happens - annoying but not life threatening :)
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Stacy LeClair||12/11/13 12:52 PM|
No go Jean-Luc but thanks for trying.
It looks like you are working harder at this than Google itself.
If you right click on the no entry sign and hit 'copy image url', then paste it into a browser, you will see that this points to an actual 'JPG' or image of some sort that must be lost in hyperspace somewhere. In my case, the URL points to
I know this sounds simplistic but all Google may need to do is give us a setting temporarily so users with this problem can opt for a nicer default hard-coded image. If they can detect this problem on the page itself, they won't even need to give us a setting, simply replace the darn jpg with something more attractive.
How can a company like Google be unable to modify a few lines of code to fix this mess in support of their business partners? The more you think about the nature of this problem, the more unbelievable this situation is.
This has to be the most embarrassing programming bug in the history of Google. If you cannot fix it, take the darn feature off the page.
They probably don't care b/c their own business page doesn't suffer from it. I wonder if they would be willing to change that little G for a no-entry sign to show their support?

Thank you Google - The problem is fixed.

I just woke up and seen your post and logged into the page immediately because I was so excited that it was finally fixed.
You're an idiot!

What are you talking about?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Daniel1980||12/12/13 10:31 PM|
Err ...guys .. what are you talking about? Can someone say something more than just vague yay's.
As far as we can see -- clients are still experiencing this problem and the no-entry sign is still there. We have tested this across desktops and smartphones this afternoon -- using multiple browsers, and clearing cache properly (from command line).
What is it that is supposed to have happened that you guys are apparently seeing?
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||Jean-Luc Benazet||12/13/13 12:38 AM|
Guys, no need to be mean or rude. I think this misunderstanding comes from the HP82 operator. I think he may have had an issue different to the "no entry sign" as when he posted his issue, I looked at his page and did not see any issue, then a few days ago, he posted it was fixed, but again... could not see any difference. Probably wrong thread.
My one fix was real however. I am not sure why clearing the cache worked for me, but what you have to know is that I played with that bin icon and those rotate buttons a lot before attempting to clear the cache. I tried a lot of things before. One thing I also found out, is that by "playing" with the picture immediately after the no entry sign may help, by playing, you may want to edit it in Google Chrome, rotate it, and leave it rotated, etc. Then refresh, then rotate it back. The system has sometimes put that picture before the no entry sign. And suddenly somehow, after one morning of playing with the picture after the no entry sign, I cleared the cache and BOTH images disappeared. The no entry sign and the image directly afterwards (which used to be a no entry sign also, but that I recovered in between Nov 25th and the last fix).
Good luck with your attempts, and may the festive season or even 2014 bring you your own FIX!

Funnily enough, the image that was used to represent my business has now changed compared to last week, making it a first. And the review score has changed too!
Last week: Google2.jpg

Regarding the review score, there was a bug with reviews affecting among other things the score, I understand that a fix was released this week.
The picture displayed in the Knowledge Panel is up to the web search algorithms. Typically, if the Local listing's profile picture is of high enough quality it will be selected for the Knowledge Panel, but it is not 100% certain.

well, guess what ..... 3 days ago, I received an email from google saying that the issue with the photos had been fixed.
However, when I tried to get into my google plus page, I kept getting a 500 error !
So I emailed Google to let them know , and they replied that there was no account under that particular email!
So I have now emailed them back to say that there was an account under that email, but their brilliant engineers seem to have created yet another bug and made my google page disappear!. It is amazing how totally incompetent they all are. I have to laugh, because otherwise I would be crying. .

I wish I could say that surprises me.
First of all, but no entry picture bug is not fixed. If anything, perhaps googles engineers attempted to fix your specific page.
I bet as far as they're concerned the issue is fixed now :)
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||12/13/13 2:51 PM|
you are not far wrong, phonefreaks. They have now sent me an email, telling me to click on a link, which is the link to what was my google plus account, but when I click on it, it again takes to me to the Error 500 notice. What kind of morons do they employ at Google ! Unbelievable! They dont even bother to check out the links which they tell me to click on. Yet again, there is something going seriously wrong at Google - if it were my company, I would fire the lot of them.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||12/16/13 6:47 AM|
Well, can you believe this? Google has lost my entire google plus account and are asking me to go through the whole process of creating it again?
Can you believe it?
What advice does anyone have for me? I really wish I could sue them.

There might be a thread on google losing accounts somewhere, I'm sure it's even more heated than this one sometimes. Please don't go there with this thread.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||JoyHawkins||12/16/13 7:22 AM|
Evaevan - start a new thread regarding that issue since it's not related to the photo issue, we can't address it on this thread.
|Re: 'No entry' symbol for missing photo's||evaevan||12/16/13 7:29 AM|
Well, just to let you know that the issue has now been resolved and the page is back up again.The only reason I put it up on this page was that the loss of my google+ page coincided with the email I received saying that the engineers has resolved the problem of the no entry sign on my account. So it felt like they had resolved one problem and created another at the same time. I telephoned Google and it has now all been resolved.

I've found that this works to restore the original file but I'm still working out how to delete them fully and replace them with a new image. Does anyone know how to do that? In the meantime, I guess I'll leave it with this restored file.
1. Open a Google Chrome browser. Sign in to your account as Manager.
2. Bring up the Google Plus About page.
3. Click the first “no entry” sign so that it displays on its own and you have the Rotate icons, Resize icon and the Bin icon, etc at the top.
4. Click the Bin icon.
5. Click Undo [When you click on the Bin icon, a tool tip comes up (yellow rectangle) near the Bin icon after you clicked it. "Undo" appears as a link in that tool tip].
6. You may have to click Restore / Restore Image.Refresh.

I have exactly the same problem with goole+ photo.
If I go on google+ photo site and do a search :
(or .mov or .avi or .mpg etc...)
The result is this no entry sign.
So indeed my photo are not deleted completly.
It would be great that google try to solve that because I am sure lot of people has this problem.
Try to search too, maybe you will be afraid of the result.
