I have not looked at the YouTube home page since the last change (7 months ago or so maybe?). But I understand your points!
I seriously believe that the crew or team that has designed the new home page, and channel page, is not the same as the people who designed the last versions.
I don't think this current group of 'designers' ever actually use YouTube at all. It looks as if they have meetings and think up all these ideas that may sound good, fresh, modern, whatever, and then incorporate them haphazardly into a new format. Without even considering how each new change affects the whole. Without considering how the actual user will be affected by the changes.
One or two extra clicks to perform a function sounds insignificant in discussion or on paper, but in actual use, it's frustrating and totally unnecessary! The same goes for hiding functions in dropdown menus, or labelling buttons with cryptic symbols. It may sound streamlined, clean, and harmless. But when in actual use, it's aggravating, time consuming, and completely unnecessary!
I think the whole design team should be fired, and new (or maybe old?) programmers hired!
