Cristina is right, there really is no way to extract the visible watermark out of the image once it's put there.  Even if it is a separate layer, it requires too much processing to do it (gazillion images out there).  I'm obviously a digital watermarking advocate, because imagine this; you digital watermark your image.  That digital watermark can be used to identify you, the owner, copyright info, or even if the image is adult content.  When you search in google, they could possible just decode the watermark and tell you if the image is copyrighted or not, if it is adult content or not, who the owner is, etc...
