|Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||5/31/12 1:37 PM|
I have an update for those of you who have been experiencing an issue where videos only pause while playback is occurring, and no buffering happens when the video is paused.
We pushed out a fix yesterday which should help alleviate this issue. If anyone who was experiencing it before can check and see if it's happening now and let me know in this thread, that'd be a huge help to us fully resolving it.
See Keane's post below for the best method for avoiding this behavior if it's causing you problems.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||waywrd||1/26/12 1:52 PM|
Still not buffering when paused as of 3:50 pm, 26/1/12.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||1/26/12 2:00 PM|
Thanks waywrd. Can you post a link to a video where this is happening?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Feydakin||1/26/12 6:56 PM|
Same, still happening with me, and it's any and every video I try and load pretty much no matter what video quality I use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z2mINeaBlM is the video I currently have up, it's not buffering when I pause it and buffering is slow no matter what quality I try and play at. The buffering much of the time is to slow to actually stream the video.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||tzuyd||1/27/12 12:17 AM|
This was happening to me for a couple of months, every 1 in 10 or so videos. In the last couple of days, it's become more like half the time - the last three videos I've loaded have suffered from this problem. Not buffering the videos makes YouTube practically useless, unless I want to get used to 360p.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Maxout020||1/27/12 3:54 AM|
I can't tell you WHEN it started, for every video I've tried to watch so far has had this problem. EVERY video, and no matter what I try, updating flash, changing quality settings just to name 2, I can't get it to stop, plus the buffering itself is so slow it laughable! And since I suffered a similar problem before it seemed to fix itself not to long before now, it makes it even MORE annoying!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Skibol71||1/27/12 8:59 AM|
i have the same problem for the last few days, i can't watch any video, because even if i play it on 360p, the buffering process is too slow.
I checked my network connection and it's working fine with all speedtests and diagnostics.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||gervenor||1/27/12 1:29 PM|
It happend to me today. Everything was working OK 3 hours ago. But now I can't watch any video. Buffering is stopping and video is pausing and not starting again. I checked my network connection and everything is working fine with it.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||waywrd||1/27/12 2:44 PM|
The problem is happening with Firefox (9.0.1 and 10.0). IE 9 seems to be fine.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/27/12 7:18 PM|
BIG PROBLEM! YouTube.. you suck! Especially since your service causes Chrome to crash. THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS!!! Press pause then try to do anything else and it kills Chrome instantly.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/27/12 7:22 PM|
HA You suck ten times worse now! You don't even have to pause any video. It can still be playing while you try to do something else and it kills Chrome.
Not to mention the entire site is starting to return Server 500 errors now.
YouTube should be flushed down the toilet.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/27/12 7:29 PM|
It's even worse than YouTube wants to admit now......I just finished watching a video of mine clear through to the end. Killed my browser AGAIN!
Jeezz this makes the 4th major outage / problem YouTube has experienced in less than a month. Who the hell programmed the new layout? A bunch of monkeys flinging crap?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/27/12 9:01 PM|
Still not working as of 10pm AND IT IS NOW AFFECTING UPLOADS!! YouTube can go to hell. I'm taking my videos elsewhere.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/27/12 9:03 PM|
Not to mention annotations. and fcking the audio up too on my videos....CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK is all I hear now.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/27/12 10:51 PM|
AS OF 12 AM JAN 28, 2012, IT IS STILL FUCKED UP YOUTUBE!!!!!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Yamitatsu||1/28/12 8:39 AM|
Tried on Firefox, everything seems to work.
But on Chrome (16.0.912.77 m), it buffers less than 1 minute and then stop until i press 'play' again.
The only crash i seen so far on chrome is when i try to close Chrome while on a video (play or pause doesn't matter), and it's pretty random.
I'm on win7 64bit
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Tubez||1/28/12 1:53 PM|
Videos are not buffering while playing either. It's a pain to watch videos on youtube these days. It's all random, but most videos I have problems watching, because buffering is painfully slow or not buffering at all.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/28/12 4:43 PM|
As of 5:45pm Jan. 28, 2012 IT IS STILL FUCKED UP YOU TUBE!!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/28/12 5:03 PM|
problem has now moved into the stats area. YouTube now displaying big red box telling users there was a problem communicating and to check THEIR network connection. IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM YOU TUBE! YOUR SERVICE IS SO MESSED YOU ARE NOW ACCUSING YOUR MEMBERS DIRECTLY!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Feydakin||1/28/12 6:36 PM|
Still happening.... any updates?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yourjudgeandjury||1/28/12 6:54 PM|
Would you expect YouTube to actually listen to complaints about about YouTube? HELL NO! Until this buffering thing is fixed 100%, I am going to keep posting here until it is.
As of 7:51pm the buffering issue still causes Chrome to crash. Stupid that Google can't even get YouTube to work properly with it's OWN browser.
I still say this is entirely related to the new layout.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Feydakin||1/28/12 10:38 PM|
Using your live service as a beta platform without allowing for opt in/out and pissing everyone off is a terrible business practice... something I probably shouldn't have to tell you. Stop it please. And fix this. It's happening to me on four different systems and every major browser at two different locations that even have different ISPs... it's on your end.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||eddieyou1018||1/29/12 12:01 AM|
youtube so slow since few days ago...help. and video doesnt stream when paused too
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||karawth||1/29/12 3:23 AM|
Videos stop buffering 30 seconds or so after the playback has been paused. I was affraid it was a new feature designed to save on traffic costs. Glad to see it isn't, since it would make watching videos on lesser connections (such as mine: 512k/128k) very impractical.
link to a video where this happens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E7GErs_CNo&feature=related

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Maxout020||1/29/12 8:02 AM|
Hey Youtube, in case your reading this it's clear that you problems have gotten worse, ALOT worse.
And I do recall all this starting when the new layout was put into action, so the way I see it, if your looking into it good for you, but if you can't find what's wrong, then it maybe better to just return to the old layout until you workout all the kinks in the new one.
That's all I can think of for now.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Jimmytroll||1/29/12 9:45 AM|
if u have it,make in adress bar chrome://plugins and switch off flash player.use html 5
BUT STILL WATE FOR DEBUG THIS!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||zaphodandflower||1/29/12 10:53 AM|
The buffering is very slow for me as well. I've tried it in IE8 and Google Chrome. It's horrible today. The bufferisng is either very slow or won't work at all. I cannot watch my videos, please fix this problem.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||iwiwu||1/29/12 11:49 AM|
Yeah, this is happening to me as well. but there was something else that I noticed which was fairly suspicious: I clicked to watch a video and it buffered quickly to about 45 Seconds and stopped. Then it buffered rather slowly and only as the video that I was watching progressed.
This leads me to conclude that Youtube is not wanting to waste bandwidth on videos if a person is not going to finish the movie. The problem with this is that I often want to watch long videos (Ashens uploads to be precise) in 720p and I want to watch them uninterrupted. I manage this by letting the video buffer all the way, or at least most of the way before I actually start watching the video.
So, come on, what you're doing is fairly ridiculous and I'd bet that, if more of the regular users knew about the help forum, this thread would have a larger number of responses than it does.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||zaphodandflower||1/29/12 12:38 PM|
let's bumps this thread up so others can see what is going on. How long is this problem going to go on. People want to watch videos without interruption. Let me just say that I tried clearing out my cookies and even uninstalled and reinstalled my Flash player that of course didn't help.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Jimmytroll||1/29/12 3:30 PM|
On my netbook video still prebuffer,same chrome as on pc..wtf...Try to use opera on pc same problem.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||vale_stellina||1/30/12 8:04 AM|
I've got this problem with all videos I see.
I completely agree with Yamitatsu:
"Tried on Firefox, everything seems to work. But on Chrome (16.0.912.77 m), it buffers less than 1 minute and then stop until i press 'play' again."
I use Chromium(16.0.912.77) on Linux, but is the same thing.
Can you fix this bug?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||phsampaio||1/30/12 4:50 PM|
I still have it.
I use the latest firefox.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||1/30/12 4:54 PM|
Thanks for confirming the issue is live on your end, everyone. We'll continue to investigate a fix for this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||laurielou862||1/30/12 10:30 PM|
Thank goodness, I thought it was my cpu. Youtube has become just about useless. Can't even watch videos without interruption anymore. Before this, the buffering was slow, but letting the video buffer while paused was workable. Now, they don't even buffer while paused.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Gabavril||1/30/12 11:50 PM|
yea same here some videos load and then will stop in like 1 or 2 mins when paused, i tried like leaving the video running while turning off the volume and then clicking back to the beginning but the video would just loads back again and the bar starts over :(
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||kschulte||1/31/12 2:13 PM|
Still happening to me on certain videos. It almost seems to me like older videos still buffer normally while newer ones don't. For example, this video:
I can pause and let the entire thing buffer, while this video:
will only buffer the next 30 seconds or so. I get these results in both Chrome 16 and Firefox 9.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||dannyfrickenp||1/31/12 6:08 PM|
All week, January 31st 2012. Every video stops buffering at pause and will stop every 30 seconds to load. This is very irritating and is even worst for 720p HD (I don't watch 1080p). This problem started this week as well. For shorter videos, about 1-2 minutes in length, the video will fully buffer fast and even when paused.
Another odd problem I seem to have is the loading icon, the spinning one at the center of the video, will appear right from the video start and will not go away until i click on the seek bar. Also when I try to play a video that has been paused for an hour or so it will play for a few seconds, restart but with an "Error reload page" message but the video will still play behind it and I am forced to reload the page to watch the video.
I live in the Midwest if that helps. I use Firefox 9 and am using Windows 7 if any of that matters. Hope this helped at some level, if you need more details ask and I will be more than happy to help find the solution.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||blahsum||2/1/12 5:29 AM|
Okay, so this is actually an ongoing issue. It has been driving me crazy, trying to find the problem.
Anyway, the latest fixes have not affected me. Youtube videos are still unreliable, though it would appear that embedded videos are more prone to this behaviour than playing directly from the site. But I just suspect this and cannot confirm as much.
The videos also appear to be buffering slower than usual, but that may be an unrelated problem..
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||2/1/12 9:11 AM|
Thanks for posting your specs, blahsum. This problem is something that likely afflicts video IDs on an individual basis, so your machine shouldn't make too much of a difference, though you're right in thinking general buffering issues could be tied to that. In any case, we're continuing to look into a long-term fix for this problem and some of the others affecting playback quality right now.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||kschulte||2/1/12 2:34 PM|
I've opted into the HTML5 player but still seem to be experiencing issues on some videos in both Firefox 10 and Chrome 16. In my earlier post I thought maybe the age of the video had something to do with it, but now it appears to be the player 'type'. Videos that use the older icon to change quality (the icon that shows the current quality, 360p, 720p, etc) load and buffer fine. Videos that use the gear icon to change quality cause problems, and still only buffer about 30 seconds at a time.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||2/1/12 2:52 PM|
@kschulte Videos that use the older icon are either embedded players using an old embed code, or are the HTML5 player. The current version of the Flash player has the new quality button (the gear). Which is why I recommended to try switching to HTML5 for the time being. The "no buffering on pause" issue is Flash-exclusive. So if you see the old quality button and right-click in the player and see a different looking menu, you'll know you're in HTML5.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||peoplesnem||2/1/12 2:54 PM|
This problem is still happening as of 5:54pm est 2/1/2012
It also seems that it slow buffering when it actually does buffer.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||kylewar||2/1/12 3:23 PM|
i am having (i believe) the same problem. 10Mb connection, speedtest and every other site work fine, but youtube is horribly slow. it uses about 70kbps max, even though NOTHING else is using my bandwidth.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||kylewar||2/1/12 3:29 PM|
why is it that ADS load fine but the video i chose does not? i understand your need to make money but this is ridiculous imo. if you can get it so the ads play without hiccups, why is it so hard to do the same with the videos?
this is the type of issue that should have arisen and been solved years ago. i expect much more from google than this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Oathblivion||2/1/12 3:32 PM|
What's with all the hate in this thread? It's a minor inconvenience at worst.... Anyways, yes, as of 6:30 February 1, 2012, I am still running into this error. I appreciate the acknowledgment and the work going into a fix.
Now if the company could make those changes on March 1 optional, we would be in business. :P
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||2/1/12 4:02 PM|
While you're using HTML5, feel free to give us feedback on the experience there as well, in the stickied thread here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=708275ab8b50899a&hl=en Thanks.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||blahsum||2/1/12 11:22 PM|
The HTML5 fix would be cool, were it not that no videos with video ads are supported. Turns out that would be quite a few, so most of the videos I access are still being played through Flash. Still, thanks for that - it does help with certain videos. Still, the vast majority of stuff I tested revert to Flash, not HTML5.
As for which videos do this, I'd have to say all of them. In fact, a video might misbehave, but if I refresh it sometimes actually buffers properly. Resolution isn't an issue for me - I force everything to 360.
I hope the problem is fixed soon, as this is slowly rendering Youtube useless for me. I'm already just skipping any Youtube video I encounter online, due to this hiccup and the slow buffering.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||tzuyd||2/2/12 12:37 AM|
That is true; I don't think giving video links was especially useful because the problem is intermittent. I haven't done tests like him, but I noticed previously working videos non-working later on, and vice versa. It almost seems random maybe.
Also HTML5 is not an option for me because YouTube says SRWare Iron is not capable, despite it supporting everything other than h.264 (again, according to YouTube). Still, that's a topic for another thread.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||gg23||2/2/12 2:58 PM|
Been having this issue for two weeks. Unable to use Youtube on my home computer, IE will not buffer, Firefox will not buffer, Chrome will not buffer. Cleared all caches/history etc etc etc. Newest version of Flash. No issues with Youtube whatsoever on my work PC. Runs perfectly there, the only difference is business class internet compared to one tier below that. Speedtest says I can get 25mb/s download from California, so It's not me. Really getting frustrated with this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SoullessSpirit||2/3/12 4:16 PM|

Once again a company that has something that works, f^*ks with it, and it's broke......I have been in the I.T. field for almost 30 years, and as always, a table full of talking heads screws with the end user's experience and then they all stare at each other like dead-eyed-dolls when the complaints start rolling in.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yasha.hartberg||2/4/12 8:30 AM|
Frankly, I'm done with YouTube. This has been an ongoing problem for weeks now and there's still no fix. I can't watch a single video the way things are currently set up so I can't imagine any purpose to even trying. It doesn't matter which browser I use and it doesn't matter how often I clear my cookies or cache. Quit giving us busy work to do and fix the problem already. Unless, of course, your objective is to drive users away, in which case you're doing a bang up job!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||zaphodandflower||2/4/12 9:00 AM|
I'm having the same problem again too. I first thought it was my 4 year old desktop, which has vista on it. But guess what the same problem is happening with my 4 month old laptop that has windows 7. Either the videos won't load at all or they keep freezing up because the buffering bar stop moving. I've tried playing those same videos on Vimeo and they play fine there. Please fix this problem. My channel is Zaphodandflower and it's happening on all of my videos. Just like everyone else I've been having this problem for about 2 weeks now. It happens in the morning, noon, or evening.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||wont preload||2/4/12 11:21 AM|
I realize youtube is probably saving some money cutting out excess bandwidth, but this is a troubling trend I have seen on various mainstream sites lately, which are beginning to assume that EVERYBODY has some sort of great internet connection.
The truth is, most of us don't. Most of us share our bandwidth with various other members of the household. And not everybody is watching on some android phone. Quite a few of us are on a good old fashioned laptop or desktop, and we are sharing our personal bandwidth with other household members.
Youtube is cutting out it's primary demographic, which are people who keep 'affordable' ISP's for themselves, students, or families who are splitting up their bandwidth with other members of their household. And, of course, those who are using public connections as well.
For this demographic, pre-loading is an ESSENTIAL option for a streaming site like youtube. If you can't load it, it becomes unwatchable. Currently, Youtube is an unusable site for me, because my shared bandwidth is not high enough to cover a live stream without preload (even at 240 - no kidding!). I was always happy to preload something, even at 240, if it meant I could watch it cleanly and my roomies could too. What a shame. I've spent so much time truly enjoying this site. Now it's just another entry on my 'not currently usable' list.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Turnbull2000||2/4/12 11:38 AM|
I'm getting this too using FF10 on both Windows XP and Vista Ultimate. My connection often isn't fast enough for 720p or even 480p, so this new 'feature' is really damaging my use of Youtube.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||gravemiind||2/4/12 1:56 PM|
Youtube is so fucked, i can't watch any video without having to pause it for a long time. i have 17down/10up internet and i can RARELY get a steady transfer rate. Videos used to load almost instantly, now they take forever, and don't even blame it on anything on our end, it's not. Google is a HUGE company, you should fix this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||beinformed||2/4/12 2:04 PM|
Ive tested a bunch of times today....same thing.....90% of all vids pause, stutter, or stall. I have a pretty consistent Internet speed of 20+ down with cable on a new Corei5-6GB laptop. NO OTHER video sites have this issue that I can find. I am a web developer and ALWAYS have promoted Youtube to my clients as a great way to show off their businesses....looks like that is coming to an end unless its fixed.....

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Feydakin||2/4/12 5:45 PM|
People; The Flash version of the site is broken. Whether they did it on purpose to save themselves bandwidth is up for debate. I will say this though, The HTML5 version of the site works great. It buffers fast, it buffers while paused and works as good or better than the Flash version ever has. The issue is that a large portion of the Youtube uploaders do not use the HTML5 version yet, which essentially makes it useless since I and many others are still forced to watch our favorite Youtubers and much of the daily Youtube content in the Flash version of the site. So Youtube, if you still plan to use the Flash version of this site, then you should be fixing it ASAP. If you plan to switch 100% to HTML5 then please hurry up and do it. I've tried it on several platforms and it seems to work wonderfully... Note, I have what I would consider an average internet service for the US.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Bill_MC Rider||2/4/12 7:16 PM|
I'm having the same issue - video starts loading then plays fine until 40 sec to a minute in and I can see the progress bar (grey - load) stops and as soon as the video gets there - bam - the "loading circle" comes on and will not recover unless I right click and "stop download" and then hit play again and all is well for another minute or so...
I'm running on a Win 7 machine, with 10 Mb cable service and the problem happens across ALL my browsers - FF 9.01, Chrome 16.0.912.77 m, and IE 9.0.8
Have tried clearing cache, and uninstalling and then re-installing Flash 184.108.40.206 (after reboots)
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||old jim||2/5/12 5:14 PM|
wow ' i had similar issue but dont know if it was the same one.
very slow, been getting worse for months.
I tried all sorts of stuff with Windows, IE, Firefox and Chrome.
At a friend's suggestion i ran connection speed test at speedtest dot net .
It showed slow isp connection of 0.1 mbps.
That's real slow so i was in a huff at my ISP.
A call to help desk got suggestion to unplug all the phones and remove those little DSP filters
when i did that and repeated speed test it went to 4.1 mbps, over 40X better.
He said those filters can go bad.
one by one i plugged the phone and filters back in, testing speed again each time. Speed stayed fast.
everything back as it was now but speed tests still around 4 mbps, and 'Dita von T___ ' has never looked better !
working great now.
moral of story - check the dumb things first like loose wires or dust in plugs.

6 feb. 2012: Still not loading when paused for every single video.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Bill_MC Rider||2/6/12 12:21 PM|
OK - Update here... I was having the problem as I stated above, but, I found I also had problems downloading ANY large file - network connection would just hang. I was sure it was my internet connection, but when I took my Asus RT-N10 router out and ran the PC straight to the Cable modem - the problem(s) went away!
So, off to the Asus website where I got NO help as far as direct tech support, but I did find a BETA firmware that was newer than my current release version. Did the upgrade and the problems are ALL gone.
Thought I should share this so others can consider the possibilities...
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Druac||2/6/12 7:18 PM|
I have also noticed that buffering just STOPS, most of the time and it still does. I have watched it very carefuly in my many attempts to make sure it wasn't on my end...but then I noticed on our connection at work (I'm the IT manager by the way) which is much faster than my home bandwidth (tested at 25mbps by the way) it does the same thing, even when there is NO ONE ELSE IN THE OFFICE USING BANDWIDTH.
What is the use of offering HD video if you can't even stream it to us properly? Is YouTube destined to be a low quality video stream?
I know you guys serve up tons of videos per day, but with all the ads I am required to watch on just about EVERY video now, you would think you could afford to upgrade your systems or do something to improve the performance of high quality video...it didn't use to be this way, and now that you are shoving more ads down our throats it has gotten WORSE.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||crescendotutorials||2/6/12 8:37 PM|
HELLO! I just uploaded a video and it works on my blog and my home youtube channel. But when I click directly on the video it does not buffer or load up... Do you know why this is?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||humanform||2/6/12 8:51 PM|
The bottom line is that, like so many other Google services, YouTube has been neglected. A redesigned web site does nothing for increased performance and, in my opinion, was a waste of money. There is no excuse for the poor quality of service. You can type in all caps to FIX THIS SH**, report to engineers which videos are slow (as if only some videos are), post links to other threads complaining about the same crap, and scream with clinched fists to the internet gods at the top of your lungs but none of it will matter. Stop crying. Quit being a Google slave. Find alternatives--they do exist.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||blahsum||2/7/12 12:38 AM|
In recent days the problem appears to have been improving. The no-buffering bug persists, but the buffering speeds are much better. So you guys are making headway.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||blahsum||2/7/12 12:43 AM|
@Feydakin HTML5 is not perfect. Just read the following thread of complaints:
As for me, I cannot even get it to work. HTML5 works on other sites, but Youtube stubbornly sticks to Flash for me.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||TourBlog||2/7/12 1:06 AM|
I was starting to think that this modification was an "new improvement", to reduce bandwidth usage. I was happy to read this topic and see it's just a bug. I have experienced the problem in a growing number of videos on last days.

Hi i have the same issue the video loads ( any video) abt 30 seconds and then pauses and then it just ends... somtimes it loads if i scroll a little ahead then it says " an error has occurred and its greys out. I tried all the browers same thing. i even reinstalled flash shockwave and java but nothing seems to be sorting it out.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||tzuyd||2/7/12 2:59 PM|
I'd like to point out to ytKARL that for me the problem only ever occurs when the YT player spins its cog when I change the video quality. When it does this, it keeps playing the video as its buffering the new quality and then never buffers more than ~30 seconds in front of where the video is up to, which of course causes problems since it stops streaming altogether when paused. Every time I see the cog spin, I curse YouTube out loud. I can't even stop myself any more.
On the other hand, when I change quality and the video stops playing while it buffers a bit of the new quality stream in I know that the player will do its job when I click pause and stream all the way. The only time this fails is when my net connection drops out.
Out of the (possibly hundreds of) times the spinning cog version has appeared, it continued to stream while paused ONCE.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||MissTess||2/7/12 6:05 PM|
Still happening to me no matter what video I try to play and any quality I try to watch. I haven't experienced any crashes but videos just flat out refuse to buffer past a certain point when I have them paused. Its always the same no matter how fast my internet is and it's starting to become very frustrating.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||TourBlog||2/7/12 6:55 PM|
Using the video posted by @fatdogg (oYYNeOjZg_M) I made some test with this this results:
In Google Chrome
Using 480p I started video paused it buffers 20s ahead, after that I resume and pause again so it buffers 30 seconds ahead, after that any time I resume and pause again it buffers 50s ahead.
Using 360p I started video paused it buffers 50s ahead, after that I resume and pause again so it buffers 20 seconds ahead, after that any time I resume and pause again it buffers 50s ahead.
Using 240p It buffered all the video 3m50s.
But the bug seems slippery I cleaned cache between all tests, and after some minutes I repeated any don't have any issue with this same video.

I cannot play Videos because of Adobe Flash Player
which I shouldn't have installed. What should I do?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||TourBlog||2/7/12 9:54 PM|
@Trish Robertson you can experiment the html5 trial on this link: http://www.youtube.com/html5
And about the Adobe Flash Player, besides the amount of problems with it almost any site uses it in some way today, so its a necessary evil, but all browsers have options to disable it, in Chrome or Firefox type “about:plugins” into the URL bar and hit return after find Flash in the plug-ins list and click on “Disable”.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||adathespy||2/8/12 1:10 AM|
I'm GLAD that I wasn't the only one having the beffering problem. It was still good about 2 or 3 weeks ago......It seems that right now unless you have a SUPER SUPER fast connection like using fiber optic, you can't really watch any videos without and interruptions from now on......So youtube is not going to fix the problem???
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Strill||2/8/12 2:40 AM|
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||blahsum||2/8/12 3:22 AM|
HTML5 now works for me and it kills the buffering problem. In fact, it's super-fast now.
But no fullscreen, so be warned before you make the switch.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Southofthethames||2/8/12 12:03 PM|
This problem happens when I watch other peoples videos, it has made wathing them unworkable, as they simply stop, as they are playing faster than they buffer, and you can no longer pause and wait.
And I do have a very fast Fibre Optic connection too.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SonicStreak||2/9/12 1:55 AM|
This problem is still occuring for me, as of 09/02/12... the videos only buffer while playing, and even though I'm on a 10Mb connection, the videos tend to play quicker than they can buffer, so I have to continuously pause the video, which isn't good.
Also, using FireFox (update 10.0) I enabled the HTML5 player, but FireFox is still using the Flash player. It hasn't changed to the new player at all. Chrome has though, and the HTML5 player does buffer even when paused. But as FireFox doesn't switch to HTML5, I'm still not buffering while paused..... sucks.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||adathespy||2/9/12 7:16 PM|
I fixed it - At your delete history options (IE 8), there is an option at the top which when CHECKED, it will actually preserve information instead of delete it. The box is PRE-checked like the ones to delete temporary files, passwords, etc. But again by keeping this box checked the information stays and the space is NOT freed up. You have to UN-CHECK that particular box to delete that info. It works perfectly for me after I did that. Hope it helps.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DoughBoy319||2/9/12 8:46 PM|
I'm having the exact same problem as well. Only positive is that it never crashes.
This has got to be the one millionth reason as to why Google and YouTube don't mix. Seriously, this is pathetic! If it weren't for these asinine changes (the worst one being Google taking over YouTube), then none of this would be happening. I hate to say this, but I honestly fear that YouTube will cease to exist in the near future. All of this will be on Google's shoulders if that happens. I don't want it to. Although these changes and problems are awful, I still love my YouTube. I want to keep this site on the web. Google, maybe it's time to hand YouTube over to someone else, someone better, someone more responsible.

This is not a "bug"
This is GoogleTube bullshit... They don't want videos to pre-load because it wastes bandwidth. A high percentage of people don't watch videos to the end, so Google's think is "hey, why waste the bandwidth?"

sad to say that the HTML5 fix doesnt last for long as the flash player has forced its way back in. Youtube is becoming more and more unstable with each passing day. and everything that google has been doing has added to the instablility of the site.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SonicStreak||2/12/12 2:55 AM|
Still happening for me. I CAN switch to HTML5, which eliminates the only buffers while paused problem, BUT... the player only changes for videos that are MINE, and not EVERY video.
So if I watch a video that I uploaded, it uses HTML5. If I watch any other video, it still uses Flash video (I think someone mentioned this happens earlier in the thread), so it sort of fixes it, but... it doesn't really. I am using Firefox 10.0, but Chrome however, uses HTML5 for both mine AND other peoples videos.
Either way, the buffering bug/glitch/error, whatever the feck it is, is still happening to me, which sucks balls. Constantly pausing the video to let the buffer catch up is BEYOND annoying, to say the least.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||overful||2/13/12 5:12 AM|
I have tried to watch YouTube videos without success. The buffer goes for 49 seconds on my Vista home premium machine with 3gb memory and a dual core processor. Strangely, I have no problem on the other machine which has twice as much memory and a better processor but this machine ought to be fine.
Pausing does not help. It will not buffer to the end of the song if I leave it there for an hour. It just will not buffer.

Will not play using latest Chrome Feb 13, 2012. Played 10 seconds and stopped. I pressed pause and it buffered to 59 seconds. 49 seconds seems to be the limitation. Between 1-11% of my CPU is working with 47% of my memory (3gb). Total 2463, cached 1601, free 26. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQu9LE5rZ8M&feature=g-all-u&context=G2939c24FAAAAAAAAAAA

I'm using Firefox 3 and I'm having this issue on two videos so far. The one that I was having this problem with is currently loading very slowly but for how long that keeps doing that I have no idea. I can barely watch it because it gets so far then freezes then when I drag the bar back to start it from the beginning to let it load more and watch it without the frozen part it resets and starts reloading all over again. Makes it really impossible to watch the video at all. I can pull it back a bit but back too the start? Nope.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SonicStreak||2/15/12 2:45 PM|
I thought I may as well report that, as of 15/02/2012.. it's STILL happening... it has not been fixed at all. Videos still buffer to around the 49 second mark, then stop. Being on Virgin and getting slowed down means the video continuously catches up with the buffer, and means I have to pause, wait... play... pause, wait... play.. and so on.
FIX IT GOOGLE / YOUTUBE.. GET IT THE F*CK SORTED!!!!!!!

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||2013Shelley||2/15/12 5:24 PM|
Every video I play on youtube plays for about 5-10 seconds, then stops, and sits there.
If you push pause, it will buffer and load.
This started sometime in January.
Previously, I could watch any video on youtube with no interruptions. Other streaming is working fine.
Hope you find the fix.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Catalyste||2/16/12 4:22 AM|
Hi, I'm still experiencing this problem.
I noticed that it started happening with Firefox 9, I have upgraded to 10, but I'm still experiencing this problem along with other problems:
- 20 seconds into the video, it will buffer.
- After pausing the video, the loading bar will show no activity even after leaving it on pause for a while. It does not continue to load.
- After refreshing the page, I will play it again and at times the video will just stop and I'll get an "Youtube enountered an error." message. So I would have to refresh again.
- Sometimes after I let it load for a while and begin playing it again, the video will suddenly jump back to the very beginning of the video as if it's glitching out on older cached data from when I paused it earlier.
This has been really frequent and it's really annoying. I visit the site late at night to avoid traffic issues, but that doesn't seem to work. Simple 3 minute videos take time to buffer now and I'm running into all the problems I mentioned above when I'm watching videos on someone's playlist.
Please fix this right away.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||2/16/12 11:24 AM|
@DJMikiRia Pleas don't make speculative posts like this, it doesn't inform anyone and doesn't add anything productive to the discussion. It's also off-topic to this thread.
We're still looking into improving buffer behavior on pause. If you're experiencing general buffering problems (just videos not buffering well at all as opposed to only not buffering on pause), I recommend trying the normal troubleshooting steps first (clear your cache and cookies, make sure your plugins and browser are up-to-date, check your internet connection). If those don't clear up, post your information in the Playback Issues General Thread - buffering problems can be caused by a number of factors (it could be specific to your region and internet provider, even) and it helps us investigate if we can separate the general issues from the specific ones, like no buffering on pause.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Daunting||2/16/12 12:04 PM|
Been happening to me for a long time. No it isn't my internet connection/firewall/browser options or plugins. YT is just intentionally turning into a POS like DJMikiRia rightfully pointed out. Hardly off-topic to highlight the source of the issue really - hitting the nail on the head, per se. More "bugs" to come, I expect.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||adathespy||2/16/12 2:16 PM|
If you are using IE 8 and is having this buffering problem, please try my method -
At your delete history options (IE 8), there is an option at the top - PRESERVE FAVORITES WEBSITE DATA - which is when CHECKED, it will actually PRESERVE information instead of delete it. The box is PRE-checked like the ones to delete temporary files, passwords, etc. But again by keeping this box checked the information stays and the space is NOT freed up. You have to UN-CHECK that particular box to delete that info. ALL youtube's video work perfectly for me after I UN-CHECK that box and delete browsing history. Hope it helps.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DJMikiRia||2/16/12 7:17 PM|
@ytKARL I have completed all of the "recommended" suggestions on helping the buffer trouble, but if that were the case then it would affect all streaming sites, not just Shoetube.
Vimeo and Netflix play just fine even on 720p AND on my satellite internet (280-420kb/s). This is a Shoetube server error. The correct procedure is to hypothesize, then attempt to prove or disprove that hypothesis. It is NOT a "buffer" issue. This has to do with Googles intention to push the users to Google+.
You have no idea how I would love to be wrong about this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Dunoj||2/16/12 10:55 PM|
I am still having the same issue. Some videos will load just fine when paused but some won't. I cleared my cache and cookies just a couple of hours ago and still the no loading when paused issue continues. I am currently using the latest version of Chrome and am running it on OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Never had this problem until a couple of months ago. Not sure what the issue is but try and get it fixed as it's really inconvenient since I tend to keep many videos open at once.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||laurielou862||2/16/12 11:27 PM|
@ytKarl, your response to DJMikiRia is just making YT look worse. It's quite obvious to all of us that it is NOT an issue on our end! How can you even say that it is when so, so many have been experiencing it, for over a month now, on all kinds of browsers, flash versions, and connection speeds??
We are angry about this, and your condescending responses about clearing cookies and whatnot makes us think that you must think we're dumb.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||2/16/12 11:48 PM|
@laurielou862 The no buffering on pause issue is on our end, which is why I created this thread - to let people know that we're looking into it.
There are lots of posts here that have to do with general buffering problems, though - and those can be caused by a number of things. The first step to resolving a general slow loading issue is to try the basic troubleshooting steps, and then if they don't work, to post your specific information so that we can record it and use it to investigate.
General buffering issues can certainly be located with problems with on our end and is something we're always monitoring. For the sake of making it easier for us to organize the information around these issues, though, it's ideal that you post it in the correct thread, else we have a lot of people thinking they have one issue that needs to be fixed on our end and may take time, when they have a common issue that they can fix right away on their own.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SonicStreak||2/17/12 2:10 PM|
As well as this 'no buffering while paused' bullcrap, I'm also having a fuck ton of "Oops! Something went wrong" errors, mainly when trying to access my Video Manager... but for some reason, i can still access it with my other YouTube account... what the fuck?
YouTube is really starting to grind my balls with all these errors, bugs and glitches they keep having.. it's getting far beyond a joke now.. why can't I access my Video Manager?!?! I used it only an hour ago!!! I need to edit some videos.. but noooooo, YouTube says "Fuck you. No video editing for you" I've had FireFox reload the Video Manager page every 5 seconds for the past hour.. STILL not working.
YouTube is just FULL of errors that don't get fixed.. and NEW errors that pop up every 10 minutes... wonderful.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Feydakin||2/17/12 7:56 PM|
It seems like, based on regular use over the last week, that the issue with videos using the Flash player not buffering while the video is paused seem to have resolved. That is good progress.
However now it seems like the streaming/download speed is consistently slower that is reasonable. I've been noting my download and streaming speeds for at least the past couple of weeks since the pausing issue became prevalent. I have noticed that my speeds have been consistently between 35kb/s and 100kb/s, when my download speed is around 12mb/s. I don't have any trouble at all with any streaming or downloading that I know isn't metered, so the only logical conclusion that I can draw is that Youtube is metering it's speeds to save bandwidth. When it takes me 30 minutes to pre-buffer a 10 minute video, that is unacceptable...
Note: I know how to troubleshoot my connection, operate my network and test my connection speeds. I also know all the possible issues and solutions that might cause slow buffering and/or videos not loading at all and have tried everything. I cannot see how this could possibly be an issue on my end.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||rodgeguy||2/19/12 7:50 AM|
We actually shouldn't have to hit pause for it to properly buffer. Your algorithm has all the facts needed. Connection speed, buffer size and amount currently in use and all that. All you have to do is write the code properly. Are there any EXPERIENCED programmers over there? Sheesh.
I see the cheap hack you put in where it blasts the first small part of the file out, and that is fine for people with high speed connections, but really, it's just a patch hack, get with it.
This has been going on for years.
Think out of the box. Oh, and try TESTING your player on a slow or intermittent crappy wireless connection instead of when you are sitting right next to your server over there.
And stop "pushing" out updates till you actually PROPERLY test stuff OVER TIME, that's programming 101.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SoullessSpirit||2/19/12 5:12 PM|
i agree with rodgeguy. one of the main problems is youtube not doing enough testing of the "fixes" that they push out. the other being Adobe.

@Southofthethames: It's funny that you say it works in Chrome because I'm running the latest Chrome and it doesn't work for me in any way shape or form. Are you using an Apple or PC?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DJMikiRia||2/20/12 12:15 PM|
It is a bit strange how there doesn't seem to be a "sweet" time that has users using less of the site therefore freeing up bandwidth. I have found this buffering problem in all 24 hours of the day & night. Weekdays-nights/ Wekkends it does not seem to matter. I do understand it is a worldwide site and there will be users on it 24/7 but really there seems to not be any pattern.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||derrrface||2/20/12 3:42 PM|
I tried downgrading to 10.3.184.34 and am still experiencing buffer problems on 720p videos. MEH!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Bean1227||2/21/12 5:16 AM|
Only thing I can suggest is switching up the video quality. For whatever reason, this switches things back to the old style of correctly buffering videos. Now there are some that this won't work on (240p only vids) or ones with the new style as those actually buffer properly to begin with.
Basically, I'm more bummed out about all the changes that are rushed out and wind up messing up the layout more and more. Come on. You all should be better than this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||PrithviSri||2/23/12 7:04 PM|
The fix I found is to download the video using keepvid and then watch it or delete it if it isn't interesting. Kinda sucks because I'm waiting a little longer but also because google loses the ad revenue. This is a pretty sucky feature. Please revert.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||seseljsrs||2/24/12 11:14 AM|
Pausing a video for me sometimes - not always - results in two glitches (as I see them)
No buffering (means I can't allow the video to download some more data for smoother playback when download speeds are slow)
The rest of the the page "freezes up" - e.g. thumbnails are no longer clickable so another video can be watched in another tab. For that matter, text links are inaccessible as well. Comments can't be written. Frozen.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DJMikiRia||2/24/12 11:52 AM|
@seseljsrs Yes I have noticed that as well. even 240p does the same.
Example: Go to a video, pause it before it plays to allow it to buffer it then never loads then shows "An Error Occured..." . I try to refresh the page and it hangs and never reopens. I copy the URL to come back to it fresh and immediately set in 240p and same thing happens.
Clearing cookies/ cache (even switching browsers) is only 10% effective meaning 90% of the time that is not the problem.
Other sites such as Netflix or Vimeo stream and buffer just fine. Something has been altered on Youtube to cause this.
Theory: This is an attempt to get users to use another video site Google may be pushing, such as Google Video. But I could be wrong and willing to admit my mistakes unlike some corporate execs and admins (ahem Google).

@DJMikiRia i have the same problem, and i have tried
1 Firefox --- with and without adblock plus, with extensions
2. internet explorer >_< ( it even asked me the first time use questions after installing t 2 years later)
3. Chrome which is my second browser
same problem in all browsers, either it dosent buffer.. if i just load a vid.. if it does only abt first 20% then it goes into " An error has occurred" or if i load the vid and then just pause it.. it loads slowly.. and then stops at abt 30% then if i play it it may or may not load further have to hit F5 a few times to get it. even changing resolution dosent help. and i am on a 30 mb Gpon FIber optic wall socket, cat 6 hard lined.
@ytKARL dude seriously if you have no idea what we are saying or doing then its ok to admit that u cant solve the problem or ask some one else to talk to us and answer this but really this had been going on since before new years now. nothing has changed.
We people who actually sit and complain might be geeks or have nothing else to do.. but because every one else is more busy in life u can easily equate one complain here to atleast a 1000 people..
I have tried CCleaner .. all the possible solutions out there on the web .. nothing has helped. stop buying shiity websites like alibaba ( spammer king) and do something abt youtube. sorry but i am really pissed of.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Dunoj||2/29/12 12:13 PM|
Seemed to be better for awhile but has started to get worse again. I'm using the latest version of Chrome on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and it definitely has the latest flash player. Clearing everything makes no difference. I don't know what happened but I'm guessing it has something to do with all the stupid changes you guys are making without really making sure that it works. Why would there have been no problem in the past and then all of a sudden this? Definitely not my connection either. I'm at a point where I have to reload a video a million times to get it to preload when paused. I'm pissed. Fix it!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||getbrett||3/3/12 12:44 AM|
Karl, we would appreciate another update on this. It's been over a month since you claimed a fix had been issued, but it's STILL occuring. It makes watching videos on Youtube impossible on a slower connection (I can't buffer in realtime, and I can't buffer while paused).
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||David McMahon||3/3/12 1:05 AM|
Yeah have to say me too to this subject, I'm convinced this is a policy not a "bug" please come clean or actully fix it!!

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Longdown||3/4/12 8:43 AM|
I get this problem in Chrome, video won't play smoothly and it WON'T BUFFER ON PAUSE.
IE 8 won't buffer on pause either, BUT can play the video smoothly.
I will investigate my cache, and will see if that fixes Chrome.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Longdown||3/4/12 8:55 AM|
Okay, have cleared chrome cache and flash cache. Chrome still cannot play video... such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QjYn845i08A
Oh well, the Chrome 'white flash of eye death' between web pages was making it almost unusable for video anyway. Time to try Opera and also pay for a new email account instead of Gmail, it seems.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||tzuyd||3/5/12 5:06 AM|
Well I haven't experienced the problem I described in my post on page 2 since this thread reached page 3ish. I haven't encountered the spinning cog version of the player in weeks. Now I just have to contend with the super slow buffering, though that's not exactly unusual; the bandwidth between YouTube and Australia has never been terribly good. At least it can buffer while it's paused again.
I wonder why I'm no longer encountering this issue while others clearly are, still.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Dandram||3/15/12 6:56 AM|
I'm having a slower buffering issue as of 2 days ago, some videos will load fully, some will burst up about 40 seconds then stop, others will stop before it reaches the end of the buffering.
Tried all the cookie cutter fixes, also tested other video streaming sites and get no issues with that. After a certain time I just get a black screen with a loading cog in the centre.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||47_MasoN_47||3/15/12 7:07 AM|
I've been having hangups at the black loading screen very frequently as well.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||eurojunkie||3/18/12 2:23 AM|
Instead of pausing the video to let it buffer, just let it play and mute the sound while switching to a new tab to do something else while it loads. This will fully load the video and then you can start it from the beginning once it is done.

I am facing this issue for last couple of youtube video.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Youtuber1234||3/26/12 10:59 AM|
I am having this issue as well. I would watch a video and hit pause to let it fully load b/c I have slow internet and the buffer would fill up maybe 3 minutes past the playback point in the vid you're watching and it will just sit there until I press play again then it resumes. I am hoping it's not a bandwidth saver or security feature or something.
Heres a link to the vid where it happens:
This video is about 17 minutes long and It's almost impossible to watch it b/c it will keep showing the spinny loading icon in the middle. Then when trying to skip around in the video just messes everything up and I have to refresh the page and the whole thing starts over. I am running firefox 11.0 and have flash player 220.127.116.11
Any help would be appreciated.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Nobadeeftw||3/27/12 6:33 PM|
I've been having this issue for awhile as well, it only seems to be a problem with YouTube however. I notice when I try to load videos, even in low rez, they simply do not buffer or pre-load. I'm on a 24mbps connection; it should be loading like it's nothing.
I've tinkered with my browser settings, cleared cache, tweaked the storage settings on adobe flash, nothing seems to help at all. I do notice that occasionally when I load a video up on YouTube it will start to pre-load the video incredibly fast; but, after about 2 seconds it slows to a crawl, then suddenly stops. It's like it really wants to load at 24mbps; but, it's being automatically inhibited or throttled back to a halt.
As I've said, it seems to only happen with YouTube, other video sites work perfectly fine in 1080p.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||abbatazappa||3/30/12 11:51 PM|
Same here, no buffering during pause, so I cannot preload the video to watch without stopping every couple of minutes to buffer. This is practically ruining YouTube for folks with slow connections!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||eurojunkie||3/31/12 1:20 AM|
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||getbrett||3/31/12 7:20 PM|
This has gone on long enough. At this point it is very clear that one of two issues are key here: either Google's Youtube software engineers are totally inept, or this is a deliberate crippling of the site to save bandwidth. The latter seems more likely at this point. I would not take issue with this approach if they were open about it, but by saying it's a bug and that they've "rolled out a fix" (months ago, when they clearly didn't) means they are lying to us.
So which is it? Are you being inept or are you lying?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||47_MasoN_47||3/31/12 7:29 PM|
I feel like it's a deliberate move to conserve bandwidth. It's especially bothersome on mobile devices where the seek bar doesn't work most of the time, forcing the video to reload anyway.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Quarex||4/1/12 5:39 PM|
Yeah, I originally switched to Chrome after thinking one of the new Firefox beta updates had somehow crippled YouTube buffering functionality--but after a month of this happening to me in Chrome, originally only in most videos but now in all videos, I can only assume this is a deliberate tactic. Hugely disappointing to someone whose connection is so slow that watching something real-time is literally impossible, and can no longer let a ~1 minute video load for 10 minutes just to be sure I can actually watch it all at once. Awful.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Jonnybear||4/2/12 2:54 AM|
I've been having a buffering problem for a few weeks now across both Firefox & Chrome at all video qualities, while the same videos play fine at HQ on my HTC Desire S. The first 10 - 25% of the video buffers & then no further buffering seems to occur, whether or not the video is playing. This is on a 6Mb broadband connection, which streams HQ movies via LoveFILM without any problems. I'm running Chrome 18 & this is rendering longer videos unwatchable on YouTube.
I have tried refreshing the page & it seems to briefly show the video as fully buffered before refreshing the page, although the refreshing doesn't help the buffering.
TL;DR: Still got YouTube video buffering problems on Chrome. Unhappy.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||basicbandTracy||4/3/12 5:44 AM|
Still happening to me. When I play any vids since the day before, they start and stop. When I pause them to let them buffer which I never had to do before except late afternoons, well, then it stops completely and doesn't buffer at all. Help! TRacy
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||lavenderhillVA||4/3/12 8:11 AM|
This just started with me a few weeks ago and has gotten BEYOND aggravating. It is the same issue whether I am on Firefox or Safari. It doesn't matter if I'm on slower loading bandwidth of satellite, or using lightning fast connectivity at a WiFi hotspot. It starts to buffer, then stops. Even if I mute it and wait the interminable time for the full video to load, when I hit replay the issue starts all over again. If this is Google/YouTube's effort to limit bandwidth, you just may as well get out of this business. The viewing experience sucks so thoroughly that any alternative is superior.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||WickedSP00N||4/19/12 5:41 PM|
Not resolved. Every video I watch it seems.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Yuscha||4/21/12 10:20 AM|
Used to be able to open up multiple (5+) tabs of videos.
Then manually set them to 1080p because that isn't an option anywhere.
By the time the first 3-5 minute video was over, all the others would be completely loaded. Now a 5 minute video takes more than 45 minutes to load.
I have no issues with any other sites with HD streaming or downloading.
This started about 2 months ago and has gotten progressively worse.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Inscrutable||4/24/12 1:05 PM|
For me, a video, while paused, will buffer only about a full minute's worth of video and then stop until I advance the video or start playing it again.
Previous to today (4/24/2012), I have been able to reload a video's page repeatedly and somehow get the video to load in its entirety while paused, albeit slowly.
Now, however, no video will load fully while paused anymore unless I change the video quality to something other than "Auto". It did not behave this way before, and YouTube exhibits this behavior on all three of my systems (each of which have different stats and operating systems).
This change in the way YouTube performs for me coincides with the release of a "Help article" about "Buffering and playback problems" (http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=74662) that states how to "fix" this issue. As you, ytKARL, have stated, Google was pursuing a fix for this problem. However, the problem has somehow become worse for me, as I was using YouTube properly before the 23rd of April.
I have attempted to contact Google for information on this topic by the contact number (1-650-253-0000), and have only been told by an automated service to look at your website.
There has not been a post by a Google representative here since midway through February. It is now near the end of April. What progress has been made on solving this issue?
Peace and goodwill,
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||rosalia987||4/24/12 3:10 PM|

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||par larsson||4/24/12 6:28 PM|
Buffering is extremely poor compared to 6 months ago. Chrome browser, Mac OS X.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKARL||4/25/12 1:13 PM|
If you run into pause without buffering, try changing the quality of the video up or down (you can switch it back to the original quality afterward). It should start buffering now.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||vwestlife||4/25/12 3:03 PM|
Yeah, Karl, when you change the quality it starts buffering again... only to stop again when another 10% of the video is buffered! So is that the new YouTube policy? To only buffer 10% of the video at a time? Because the problem of videos not buffering when paused is only getting more and more prevalent now, weeks after you claimed it was fixed, and tried to blame it on us. If Google is purposely doing this to try to cut down on their server load, then just be honest with us!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BardicDruid||4/25/12 4:26 PM|
No it doesn't, I don't know what you people have done but it's killed YT.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Inscrutable||4/25/12 5:50 PM|
Thank you for responding. I have tried your advice and noticed that it does work to a limited extent--it only loads part of the video after the point I change the quality.
However, the problem for me--and, it appears, for many others--is not so much "if [we] run into pause without buffering," but that we now *consistently* run into pause without buffering for every video YouTube hosts.
After the previous bugfix that Google released for this problem, I could reload a video's page and the video would then buffer fully while paused without having to change the quality (after about three or four reloads, admittedly). Indeed, many videos did not require reloading at all (in my case, almost all of Chuggaaconroy's videos loaded fully while paused without requiring reloading). This is no longer the case; no video from YouTube I have watched as of late will buffer more than 40 seconds while paused. This means that the product lacks the same functionality that it had in 2011.
It should be noted that all of my systems are fully updated, clean, capable of running YouTube to its fullest extent, and have been for the last four years.
The concentration of posts over the last two days has noticably increased--Google's customer base has noted a change in the quality of the service. Please, is this problem a temporary situation while Google works on returning proper functionality to YouTube?
Peace and goodwill,
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||dn99||4/25/12 11:41 PM|
I've checked this issue out numerous times and it definitely has to be something that YouTube is coded to do, whether to minimize server requests/data transfer or whatever, but it's pretty horrible.
It's actually not even a playing/pausing thing it seems. It seems it actually only buffers to a certain point after the current playing point of the video. For example, I was watching a 10-minute video. At the beginning of the video, it was buffered to about 20 seconds. Later, at after 8 minutes in, it was buffered to 8:45 or so. I clicked pause, moved back 3 minutes in the video and clicked play.
It played through those 3 minutes again but buffering for the last minute or so of the video DID NOT HAPPEN.
I then decided to move to the beginning of the video, let it play another minute. No buffer. So I clicked and moved the video somewhat close to the 8:45 mark. What do you know? The video buffered further to about 9:30.
This is really a crappy policy Google has chosen.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Madgegames||4/26/12 1:23 AM|
Get this shit fixed. Videos don't even load anymore.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Kochevnik||4/26/12 6:50 AM|
Using the latest edition of firefox, and for about a month or two (maybe longer) this has been an issue.
And I have to tell you, this is not a minor issue for me. I have rather a slowish internet connection, so if I want to watch a video on your site the only way for me to do it is to load it, pause it, and come back a minute or two later when it's loaded.
If it only loads the first 20 seconds or a minute or whatever (seems to be different on each video) IT MAKES YOUR WEBSITE TOTALLY NON-FUNCTIONAL FOR ME! I know you have a huge competitive advantage by being the largest video website out there, but this is seriously a major problem and you won't be the largest for long if you continue to just totally disregard all of us like this. People have had this issue since freaking December, to go by this thread, and the fact that it's still not fixed leads me to believe someone just doesn't care.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||eurojunkie||4/26/12 7:42 AM|
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||dn99||4/26/12 9:32 AM|
eurojunkie: Good for you. I'm sure it'll come back soon somehow.
Because I tried clearing everything in Firefox, IE, etc. as well as clearing the Adobe Flash Player settings and it still didn't work.
The other thing to this being though is that every other embedded video player I've watched videos on still buffers while paused, even if it is a Flash-based video player. It's only YouTube's that doesn't.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BardicDruid||4/26/12 3:41 PM|
Today if you do that it's buffer maybe a minute or two of video, then it's pause again. Ya'll have managed to improve YT to the point of killing it, why not just go back to the old one THAT WORKED!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||princesssookeh||4/27/12 10:07 AM|
It's worse now. It buffers even less and only when playing.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||stevenserver1||4/27/12 3:21 PM|
Basically others have summed up the same problems I've been having in this thread - youtube videos not prebuffering while paused, it only prebuffers up to 50 seconds, clearing cookies/cache obviously doesn't work or is a temporary fix, while using html5 seems to work fine (I'm still thinking its a adobe flash problem)
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||triksterx||4/28/12 3:48 PM|
I think I figured out what is causing the prebuffer problem. Videos that are watched without changing the resolution seem to prebuffer only ~50 seconds of video, and even then you have to play the video for 3-4 seconds before pausing to get that much. If you change the resolution, however, the entire video will then load up.
So if you want to prebuffer that 20 minute long video so you can skip around, simply change the resolution setting. It will still fully buffer even if you set it back to the default 360 setting. I've tested this with quite a few videos now, and it worked the same way on every one. No or little prebuffer on a 4 minute video after allowing the vid to load for 5 minutes before changing resolution, fully buffered and ready to watch with a minute of buffer time after changing resolution to 480p then back to 360p.
Not exactly a pretty fix, but something tells me this is intentional, so I'm not going to count on it being fixed any time soon.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||xcalibarus||4/28/12 8:44 PM|
Thanks a lot man. This totally fixed my prebuffer problem. Was starting to pull out my hair trying to find out how to fix it. Thanks again.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||vwestlife||4/29/12 1:26 PM|
Another related problem is that once the video reaches the end and finishes playing, the entire buffer is cleared. So if you want to go back and watch all or part of the video again, you have to wait for it to re-buffer.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||GreySix||5/1/12 11:41 AM|
This problem started happening to me a couple of weeks back. Videos will not buffer while paused, only when playing. Also when the videos reach the end and I hit replay the buffer is cleared. This happens with FireFox, Chrome and Safari.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||reclusive46||5/1/12 3:18 PM|
I am also experiencing this issue on Mac OS X Lion on Safari when viewing Flash youtube videos. HTML5 ones work fine. Do you guys have any idea what the issue is?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Unforgiven666||5/2/12 7:32 PM|
been having this problem for at least 2-3 months and still the same shit.they only way to get it to buffer is to play the video.if you spam the play/pause button you getting some buffering but it is anoying as hell
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DanMoller||5/2/12 7:58 PM|
Still got both problems:
- No buffering while paused
- Entire buffer clearing when clicking to play again
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Novart||5/3/12 2:48 AM|
I think it should be obvious by now (almost half a year later) that this is intentional.

- No buffering while pausedI thought it is a new intentional upgrade to make the viewer watch the advertisement as many as possible time.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BardicDruid||5/4/12 10:05 AM|
How many people telling you it doesn't work is it going to take for YT to finally listen???? It's so bad now everyone I know including me have either given up or are looking for a new video site, keep the upgrades going and soon no one will be here.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||crap111111||5/5/12 7:52 AM|
My videos wont buffer when paused either. All basic housekeeping items have been tried.
Also, when I pick an earlier point on the video and try to play from there, buffering restarts.
I have been a big youtube fan for many years and I have uploaded many videos with many views but the service is becoming progressively less and less functional.
I sense that this problem is a huge one and youtube staff are not responding to these posts because they don't know how to fix it. I think they've dropped the ball.
Quite sad really.

I can see, there is thousands of people suffering from this problem, I noticed this problem 2 months a go, and I was thinking Google is clever enough to solve this problem very fast. As a developer I understand there is nothing complete 100%. But keeping this problem too long without solving it will affect Google image between users.
I hope Google understand that Keeping so strong is not easy task, and the Competitors always waiting you to fall down, bee careful Google this is the start.

This problem is ongoing... the site is useless and frustrating at this point.
multiple routes to youtube, multiple computers, OS, browsers... all have the same problem.
Why offer HD if its unsustainable? Netflix seems to have it down, as so most of the streaming porn sites.

BUMP. Still happens, getting worse. Opera of various version running here. Clearly has nothing to do with browser.

Hi, I've only just noticed the buffering problem in the last couple of weeks here in New Zealand. Different browsers (chrome, safari and IE) and a large variety of videos.
No buffering when paused.
Quite annoying on my slow capped internet connection.
Good luck finding the gremlins :)
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||attackwithdecay||5/9/12 3:30 PM|
This has become an issue for me in the past couple of weeks. I am running version 18.0.1025.168 of Chrome, obviously a few months after the original post, but I am still seeing an issue.
On the latest version of IE 9 on my computer, YouTube videos buffer when paused. However, Chrome does not. I have tried clearing my cookies, as I saw other forum posts that this was a possible solution, but Chrome still does not buffer videos when paused.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/9/12 3:52 PM|
sorry if I cannot translate the whole page ;)
still not buffering here.
what to do?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||mm66||5/9/12 5:22 PM|
Still an ongoing issue. Left a video overnight and it did not buffer past the point at which I left it. Changed the quality it buffered a small amount more then stopped and hasnt moved this was 3 hours ago now. Happens in all the browsers I use FF12 on win7 x64. I have given up watching anything but the channels I subscribe to watching videos has become a PITA.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||marquisdepyro||5/11/12 12:38 PM|
Same problem for me, the video stops buffering at exactly 50s, this happens in both Firefox and IE, I've cleared cookies (and all other files) from both and it has changed nothing. This only started happening for me approx 3-4 weeks ago. Happens on every video. Changing video quality also does not seem to do anything.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/11/12 1:52 PM|
Hi. since 1st march 2012 I have this issue.
FF and IE on both machines :(
flash only, html5 ok.
video paused > the buffering stops but NOT at 720 nor 1080p!
videos 480P: I have to set 360p and after 1 second 480p again, ok.
very strange behaviour. and even stranger that the issue remains unfixed.
this happen since 1st march 2012: YT privacy changes???

youtube videos won't buffer while paused! or they will but only up to 50 seconds and then completely stop, unless i press play again. it is incredibly annoying!!!!!!!! this is happening to me in 3 different computers, with different browsers: IE, Safari, Chrome, with different IPs, with different internet connection... i have already cleared the browser's cache and the flash player's cache, checked my versions are up to date, reloaded the video, restarted the computer. i've done everything. this is definitely a youtube problem!! plus it's not just happening to me. there are a lot of people, actually too many, complaining about this. I don't know if this is kind of a feature you have added or something, either way it truly sucks. this problem is making me hate youtube. and that is just sad, because i think it is a great tool (when working correctly). given the company's alleged beliefs and views, i would expect this to be solved really soon... but from what i've read of other people's complaints, this has been happening since January... that would be 4 months! this is truly disappointing. i hope you work it out soon. i miss youtube. I can't use it like this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||caroneedhelp||5/12/12 10:00 AM|
and when i want to go back (say i had the video buffered up to 2:00 minutes and i want to "rewind" and watch what happened at 1:10) it starts buffering from the start!!!! does anyone know how to solve this?? it happens randomly.. and it's also very annoying does it hava anything to do with the non buffering while paused? or is it something else??

Long time user, first time whinger.... I've been on YT since '06 & I'm now looking elsewhere & am bothering less & less with coming back to see if YT has their sh!t together.
One more month & I'm deleting my own videos. I don't get tons of views, but I'm not supporting that which does not support me or my interests.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||EugeneZA||5/13/12 4:12 AM|
Not buffering more than 30 seconds ahead on pause which is not enough for my slow connection.
The solution used to be to let the video play out and then to slide the tab back and watch it then, but this does not always work lately because,another problem is when I move the Tab too far back to review the buffered media it begins buffering again as if I just opened it. I was hoping there was a place where I can set it to do more buffering. My Cookie cash is cleared and all the rest but no joy.
The only solution now is to download every video onto my drive before I can watch it. Many local people now would rather share downloaded videos on flash disks than to try to watch them on Youtube. When these features work again we can go back to watching them on Youtube.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||handakes||5/13/12 4:53 PM|
still having the same problem and a new one too now, sometimes after i buffer the whole thing (manually!) when i try to seek back to the beginning of the vid to watch the whole thing it starts buffering again from scratch!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||MechanoRealist||5/14/12 2:51 AM|
I thought it was a feature since after it began I have had less buffering problems than before.
I guessed it was to prevent people from starting several videos in paused mode to let them buffer all at once.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Daemn42||5/14/12 8:16 PM|
Dunno what the original "fix" was, but the problem has gotten very very bad in the last month or two in many ways.
YouTube often is very slow no matter how fast my connection is (have tested on several different broadband connections) or what resolution I choose, which forces the need to buffer some or most of the video to play it through..
1. It now sometimes plays until it catches up with buffer, then stops, and never buffers or starts playing again, unless I click to move back a few seconds, then it may start buffering and playing again.
2. It now very rarely will continue to buffer at all if I hit pause. Used to work 100% of the time. Now works about 10% of the time.
3. Even if a video does buffer fully, or finish playing, if I jump back to beginning or anywhere in the middle, it will simply start buffering from scratch.
4. Now sometimes plays through normally, but indicates no buffer at all, whether I pause or not.
5. Some of the YT edge caches are just *always* broken. When I see it loading from them in status bar, I know that I will *never* be able to play the video through to completion.
I've taken to adding the various o-o.preferred.lax04t01.vX.cacheY.c.youtube.com (where X and Y are numbers) caches to my hosts file pointing them nowhere, to force YouTube
to choose different caches. Sometimes works, sometimes there are no other caches available, and I'm just SOL.
Sometimes videos play better in HTML5 (Chrome), sometimes better in old Firefox (Flash 10), but both are sometimes hopeless.
Sometimes they play ok in private browsing mode (equivalent to clearing your history, cache and cookies), sometimes not.
It's a mess. Please fix it.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Daemn42||5/14/12 8:21 PM|
Instead of clearing cache/cookies/history just use Private Browsing mode. It gives you a clean slate every time, and sometimes works where other options fail.

EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT STUTTER ON VIDEO PLAYBACK WITH BUFFERING .
Youtube videos intermittently stutter during playback. I have noticed that videos no longer preload [buffer] when the video is stopped no matter at beginning ,middle or end of the video. I am not saying that is a solution, i am just informing you that its the only difference i noticed. I was hoping to preload the videos into the player before playback but it wont load anymore like it used to.
I recently updated adobe flash player for all browsers Opera,IE9,Firefox9, and Chome 18. They all are using the same flash version 11.2
** I was looking around on Adobe support forums and i saw similar complaints,some said that going back to 11.1 eliminated the problem.
Please advise, will be patient of course, thank you
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||FalloutJack||5/16/12 11:06 PM|
So...what appears to be the problem in Youtube is that you have this problem where the videos load to...a point, and then stop, and won't continue loading until you start playing again. I find this to be a rather BAD idea and assumed (erroniously?) that this was an effort to streamline the system.
Right... Well, since this has been a problem for literal MONTHS, I see no other way around it. O staff of Youtube, whatever it is you did whenever this began was a mistake that you have not been able to correct. Whatever tests or research you have done before and after the issue have not worked out in progress. The best thing I can see is for you to reset the system back to a moment where everything is status quo and work from scratch on the problem while we resume our video enjoyment. Otherwise, this is going to last for a very...long...time.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ddawson||5/17/12 3:57 AM|
I'd like to add my voice to this and say, I'm seeing the problem too. An interesting aspect, however, is that it is apparently not happening for me with HD resolutions. Now why is that?
Using Firefox 12 on Linux.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/17/12 5:26 AM|
ok, this behaviour is normal, because 720 and 1080p require you change manually the resolution.
they start at 480p and YOU set them to 1080. therefore no buffering issue in pause mode.
I dont understand why since 1th march (new privacy YT??) I go this issue too, I have to change the resolution for 1 second and then the buffer is fine.
very strange that the developers dont fix this issue.
or adobe should fix this, because with html5 > no buffering problems!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/17/12 5:27 AM|
today YT fixed the issue with expanded video, I hpe that they will fix this buffering issue in pause mode too ;)
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BardicDruid||5/17/12 3:07 PM|
Here it is May 17 and people have been complaining since Jan, is anybody even going to try to fix this??? The clearing cache doesn't work, changing resolution doesn't work, using a different browser doesn't work, using a different computer doesn't work, using a different network doesn't work. YouTube just doesn't work anymore, you've managed to upgrade to the point you killed it. People didn't want the upgrades and it's became very apparent they don't work, so why are you keeping them????? If you want everybody to find another video site just say so and stop dicking around.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/19/12 7:44 AM|
YT did resolve the issue with expanded video size!
but this issue with buffering in pause mode still here.this issue did arise oh the 5th march 2012; after upgrading to the new flash player
(no buggering issue in html5!).
now I am writing to adobe.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/19/12 7:56 AM|
these issue with buffering are related to the nvidia graphics only???
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||pasadenagene||5/19/12 1:43 PM|
not yet. have complained here also and even got in contact with adobe tech person, they claim its not their flash player and referred me back to youtube.
videos wont preload before playing them, like they used to. only during playback and it causes intermittent pausing during playback, quite annoying.
i guess we have to wait until its corrected.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ypandey||5/19/12 3:23 PM|
why some videos are not buffering and getting store in cache these days?
does it depend upon uploading video type or uploader's video setting ?

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/19/12 3:50 PM|
because the second video is only 0:38 seconds.
but try a video 2:00 or so...
I guess after long time the issue will be not fixed.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||AminD||5/19/12 11:22 PM|
It's very weird for me. I start a video and it buffers fine until about a minute in. If I pause it, the buffering still does not continue. If I play the video half way through (Lets say 5 min out of 10 min video) the buffering stops at about 6:00. It does this at every point of the video. Blip.tv and streams work fine.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Sylkun||5/20/12 4:00 AM|

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Kjernekarl||5/26/12 1:24 PM|
Having the problem here too. Started about a month ago. High speed connection, tried clearing cache/history, happens on all browsers, all videos and all resolutions. The video loads about 5%, then stops.
If I try to pause before this happens it never loads beyond that first 5%. This makes it physically impossible to watch any video without constant interruptions, as it won't ever load more of the video until it reaches the end of the first 5%.
If some kind of buffer limit has been purposely put into place to save bandwidth, then this is a case of YouTube cutting of its own head while attempting to shave. If so I hope it grows back soon, since this really is a site-breaking bug for a lot of people.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||5/28/12 9:23 AM|
Hi, I dont know why the YT dev are silent.
but they changed the YT code to get a better (?) video performances, doing so they introduced the unavailablity to get the buffering working in pause mode.
I hope that they will change the YT code again.
But it is strange that the dev are silent now.
Workaround: change the resolution for 1 second and return to the resolution you want. the buffering works. only if the video is 240p only, no workaround available.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||FalloutJack||5/28/12 6:27 PM|
Yyyup. Youtube still doesn't work right. And the problem isn't going to go away. You have to DO something about it, and I think you'll find that a rollback and rework of the code from the ground up is your best option, 'cause it's just gonna take forever and a day for you to comb through it all otherwise. Just do it, and spend the time you're using up with us waiting here more wisely. Revert to previously saved configurations until it's the system works. Your features are nice and all, but they're no good if the core doesn't function properly.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||cakocet||5/29/12 6:09 PM|
- I controlled it with a download-upload meter, only buffers 40 sec. or so and stops, when playback is resumed buffering is also resumed.
- Cleared the cache
- Tried with most browsers available (freshly installed 2 of them)
Only way to workaround without decreasing the quality:
---- Switch to HTML5 ----
It buffers after that, without problems.
I thought youtube is running low on bandwidth and tried to decrease costs by this measure. Until I was fed up with constant cuts.
A skeptic would think that youtube forces people to switch to HTML5 - with Apple.
(Win7 Ultimate SP1 running on Kingston SSD - 2 GB RAM - Core 2 Duo E4300) if that is of any help.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Ender1081||5/30/12 9:28 AM|
Possible Fix (if you can settle for lower res video for now at least):
I'm on a slow internet connection, so having video buffer completely before watching is essential for me. This stopped working for me in both Firefox and Chrome, so I checked out the Video settings in Youtube. The following seemed to work for me:
(Click on your Youtube account name, then "settings", then "playback", and select "I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video". Unfortunately it means that you can't buffer the highest quality version of videos. It does however allow you to fully buffer 360p videos, move anywhere in the buffered section without re-buffering, and launch fullscreen without re-buffering. I've only just tested a couple of videos now, so don't know if it will continue to work, but hope this helps someone out there!

When I try to pause my videos and let them buffer, the buffering does a little and then stops; videos only buffer when I play them.
So because of this I went ahead and let all my videos run so at least they could fully buffer for later.....
SO later when I want to watch the videos and be able to skip through them quickly; I naturally click replay AND SURE ENOUGH THE VIDEO BEGINS TO RE-BUFFER FROM THE BEGINNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Fourteen00||5/31/12 8:00 PM|
I am having a similar issue with buffering as well, it only seemed to start happening recently. I am curious if it has anything to do with the comcast cache or other caches youtube uses. The reason I think that is because when I load up a 1080p on another website I have no buffering issues (no matter time of day I tend to use the internet during off peak times) same with streaming 'hd' videos (720p) from hulu and netflix. It seems to be an issue only effecting youtube videos. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance (Keep up the good work Google) :)
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Aloverssoulz||6/1/12 6:01 AM|
Not a single YouTube video will work for me. Not a single one! What did YouTube mess with now to cause such a problem? And why the Hell isn't it fixed yet? Its been three days since I could watch a video to the end without it constantly pausing.
Yes, the tip written here to watch videos in 240p and 360p works, but I don't pay for high speed internet to watch video in awful quality. Whoever decided to change whatever wasn't broken needs to be fired.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Fragbug||6/1/12 7:38 AM|
I had to get around this issue by using Flash 9 on one browser and Flash 11 on another, since Youtube videos only seem to buffer on Flash 9. I find that it's much more consistent than changing the quality, though I don't know if this trick applies to other users.
Note: Flash 9 is also more likely to crash if you open the Youtube main page in another tab. Gotta give and take...

What if I wanted the quality to be the same?
The videos would buffer for a while(when paused at 00:00)and then stop
When I do change the quality(of an HD vid) the video is not smooth at all, it's unwatchable, and the audio's no good either. This has been happening for almost a week now. Clearing the buffer is useless.So frustrating...

First noticed it on this video: /watch?v=UNyhyzjYCks and now it's happening randomly. I am sure that the people working these help forums aren't the ones making the decisions, so I won't waste a long post here with my thoughts. BB22 - your progress bar not displaying is a separate issue from videos not buffering while paused, so the method in this thread won't help it. We're looking into this issue right now. If you can post your info in this thread ( https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/youtube/watching-videos/6zVPyUYr4wk) it'll help us investigate. Thanks.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||6/6/12 5:36 PM|
I got on today to watch some youtube videos and they will not load. The grey bar loads about 1/16 of the video and just stops there. I wait and doesn't load/buffer. I changed the quality and the grey bar doesn't show up at all. I don't get it. It worked fine for me last night and now today I cannot watch a single video. I did try watching without letting it load/buffer but it pauses every 15 seconds. Grrr... What is going on?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||6/6/12 5:41 PM|
Oh yeah, I'm using FireFox. It does the same thing with Internet Explorer too. :(
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BB22||6/6/12 5:42 PM|
Or you guys can stop telling me it's my fault and fix the damn problem seeing how just about everyone that has an account is telling you about this!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BB22||6/6/12 5:59 PM|
By the way, in case you can't figure it out YT. Progress bar = buffering/gray bar
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BB22||6/6/12 6:59 PM|
Oh, mind telling me why when we're not logged in to YT the buffering/gray bar works just fine but when we are logged in it just magically stops working.
Try explaining that you idiots!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Anistuffs||6/6/12 10:30 PM|
No it's not working. I checked just minutes ago & I was searching for a fix being fed up of having this issue & I found this page.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||gravexrobber||6/6/12 11:16 PM|
Been trying all night to fix this. I erased all of my cookies and history, all the way back to when I first got chrome. This didn't resolve the issue. Whenever I pause a video to let it buffer, it just sits there. This problem hasn't occurred until tonight. I can't figure out what to do. Please help.

The amount of condescension from YouTube's staff is stunning, really. You'd think being from Google they'd be less snotty than every other customer support team out there, but obviously it couldn't be further from the truth.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||6/7/12 3:34 AM|
no Keane, your workaround was working until testerday!!
taoday doest! because if I change the resolution the grey bar doea disappear! starting from today.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||schuetzenkoenig||6/7/12 3:36 AM|
this workaround worked until yesterday.
starting from today your workaround is expired. because if you change the resolution TODAY the grey bar disappears. see please the forum.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Reaves||6/7/12 4:09 AM|
This just started happening to me yesterday. I've tried everything. I do mean everything. From clearing my cookies and cache, changing the quality of the video, to signing in and signing out. Nothing will show the loading bar while it's paused right now on any vid. I'm using Firefox.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Just a random dude||6/7/12 4:21 AM|
It "ain't got nothing to do with no YouTube"! :)
Or at least not JUST YT! Other stream sites are affected as well (in various different, yet similar ways)
THE PROBLEM IS FLASH! The newest updates messed something up. I see that you've been having these issues since January, while I've started having those quite recently. Since I'm not really keen on updates than that's probably why I was "spared" from this for such a long time.
Maybe, by knowing this time span, we can deduce which precise update was faulty. (versions 10 and 11 are definitely damaged)
Anyhow, there's also this article here:
Where the guy says something about buffering when paused. It's too high tech talk for me, so I don't really know what he's saying but I bet it has something to do with it. Also notice that it concerns the versions from 9 to later.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Isky||6/7/12 4:32 AM|
So, let me get this right. To make youtube videos work properly for me, I'm supposed to (based of Google's suggestions elsewhere)
(1) deselect the "slow connection" setting, even thought I...you know...have a slow connection, and actually want to choose my video resolution myself.
(2) pause the video, wait to see if it buffers, and change the quality of the video to one I don't want in order for the buffering to occur?
Really? You still haven't addressed the issue that I can't see the buffer bar, unless I log out of youtube. (I still don't see the progress bar, whether I choose low speed connection or not)
I have a better workaround. I log out of youtube, and remain logged out permanently. I do not press play on the video, but instead use a flash video downloader extension that lets me download the video at the resolution of my choice, without having to worry about buffering issues.
Unfortunately, my workaround sucks for you. You no longer have accurate statistics of the number of views a video receives, and I don't spend much time on a youtube page, and thus may be less inclined to click on other youtube links and videos.
I'll be using MY workaround, until such time that these bugs get sorted out.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||LightningF||6/7/12 8:33 AM|
This...this has got to be the STUPIDEST thing I have ever seen happen from Youtube. No matter what I do the grey bar does not show if I change quality. If I don't, it loads up to a certain point then stops until I hit play, it's ANNOYING. For god sake Youtube, stop screwing around with the videos.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||SwagNY||6/7/12 9:00 AM|
still broken, worse with embedded videos
buffer never overtakes playback speed, either playing or paused. its like buffering is simply not happening at all
you guys really hosed the site this month, does anything here work anymore
even your stinking forum:
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||VoodooBear||6/7/12 10:20 AM|
Videos are still not loading while paused no matter what quality is chosen. I've cleared all browser data and still there's the same issue.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||6/7/12 10:32 AM|
Just checked today, the videos still not working, even changing the quality doesn't make the grey bar show up. Grrrr...how am I supposed to watch my favorite channels videos if the video won't buffer no matter what I do. And yes, I did clean out my cache, cookies, history, updated the adobe flash player, updated FireFox and yet, NOTHING worked. Is it my computer, internet, or YouTube itself. :(
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||LightningF||6/7/12 5:38 PM|
I'm really starting to wonder when Youtube is going to fix this, because there's not many alternatives to getting these videos to actually WORK. Downloading some might work but it takes forever for some.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||LiamLollins||6/7/12 8:14 PM|
For me, changing the video quality makes the grey bar disappear, so I don't actually know when the video is done loading. HOWEVER, it does load the video all the way through. You just have to guess when the video is loaded.
Not the worst thing in the world, but KIND OF A BUMMER, Google. KIND OF A F*CKING BUMMER.
I live in a rural area, where the internet is dismal. So I load videos while at work so I can watch them at home.
I just wanna relax and watch some vsauce, but YOU JUST CAN'T LET ME HAVE MY PEACE, can you?
*this was semi-sarcastic, but also a little serious*
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Fragbug||6/7/12 9:58 PM|
I find it disturbing that a few days after I post my workaround in this topic, Youtube stops buffering while paused again (on both Flash 9 and 11). Am I paranoid for thinking that this is an inside conspiracy?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||rwired||6/7/12 10:07 PM|
The same problem started for me yesterday. In both Firefox and in Chrome, and on two different computers one at work and one at home.
The videos are actually buffering, but the grey bar isn't progressing, I need to guess when they are done.
I deleted cookies & cache. Didn't fix it. I deleted my entire profile in Firefox and created a new one, no extensions. Didn't fix it.
If I select Settings|Playback|Always choose the best quality... in my YouTube settings it DOES fix it. But then when I go full-screen the video starts over to buffer again.
I am on a slow connection in China where YouTube is blocked, so I'm using an SSH tunnel. I need to be able to buffer-up.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||JohnTonne||6/7/12 11:01 PM|
just started today, it buffers but the grey progress bar doesn't fill in so there is no way to tell when it is done loading , the previous fixes don't work either.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Frank West||6/8/12 6:10 AM|
I joined this group to complain about this.. Glad I'm not the only one.
It started happening about two months ago.. I used to just paused a video to let it finish buffering... Now youtube videos, when paused, only buffer for about another few seconds before it stops.. If I hit play, it starts buffering again, but never fast enough to play the video. It's miserable. It makes watching pretty much every video into a stop and start affair. Seamless watching is impossible.
I'm living in Japan now, so I don't know if that effects my speed, but my friends in the US are experiencing the same thing.
Just my opinion, but I never disliked the youtube before there were new changes every other week.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Disco Supernova||6/8/12 7:14 AM|
It is not Flash Player issue 'cos I tested it with JW Player Greasemonkey script
in Firefox and Chrome (Tampermonkey)and buffering is fine (SD and HD).Problem is
YouTube player.I also opened HD videos with external player (PotPlayer) and buffering is fine.This YouTube constant changes is just fixing something that is not broken.About few weeks ago Google Chrome Frame in IE stopped working fine on YouTube and began overriding IE zoom settings.Also zoom "button" was gone from IE status bar on YouTube so I uninstalled Chrome Frame.This is just stupid 'cos Google is the owner of YouTube and YouTube is sabotaging their own products.Sorry about my English.
|(unknown)||6/8/12 7:46 AM||<This message has been deleted.>|
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Just a random dude||6/8/12 7:52 AM|
It IS flash. (Or at least a part of the issue is flash related)
I've uninstalled it and used an older version.
It works now. Meaning "kinda" 'cause the vids now buffer fine, but the buffering bar is gone. Before the switch it was the other way around - the vids didn't buffer but the bar was there.
This may not be the perfect solution for all, but it's enough for me. At last 4 now.
Especially since IT WAS NOT JUST YOUTUBE that got messed up! Other stream sites were damaged too. After getting an older version they work just as fine as before. (Meaning both the pause buffering and the loading bar are there)
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||arth888||6/8/12 10:08 AM|
Youtube will not fix that, seems to be is like a 'live streaming' now, or buffering is almost disabled (at least for me). We need to find other way to do that, i will try to find some greasemonkey script.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||6/8/12 10:11 AM|
C'mon YouTube, let me watch my videos but no, it won't buffer. Why? I also looked at other sites that have videos and THEY buffer just fine, but only YouTube won't buffer (grey bar loads a few seconds and stops, changing quality makes it disappear). I really hope this doesn't affect me permanently.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||cain919||6/9/12 12:51 AM|
just noticed that the audio quality is low when we do change the Quality to either 480 or 720 or HD. the default, say 320 sounds very crisp, but at the time you toggle the quality button, you can never get the same quality again even setting it to HD or back to 320. please help

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Elrese||6/9/12 4:48 AM|
I've been having the exact same problem as Frank West for about 3 or 4 months now, I'm chosen the lowest quality on vids, am NO techno fundi at all, I just watch YT vids for fun. But it's getting so annoying I don't get it! I let a video run until about halfway, so the grey bar has "buffered" - is that the right word? - until halfway through the video, then when I try and play it back either by clicking on the start button or dragging the thing to the start, it starts to rebuffer again?!?!?!?! WHY?!?!?! Please help ... it's so annoying!!!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||aleccs||6/9/12 7:36 AM|
Anybody any ideas how to fix this yet? using opera for it on windows 7... didn't have any trouble with it until probably about march when all the problems started...video not buffering if paused, randomly starting to buffer again if i jump from one moment to another in a video, if i try to replay a video after its fully buffered and have played it before sometimes it just freezes or starts buffering again... tried it on chrome, mozila, IE( ohh GOD why did i even think that would work... ) and no improvements compared to my normal browser Opera...
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Tenosis||6/9/12 11:52 PM|
It looks like this is an actual business decision by Google and not a bug. You can test this out yourself.
Sorry guys, but we've been lied to.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||etunar||6/10/12 6:26 AM|
I have been having for this problem for a while now, and just tried your solution Tenosis, and I can confirm that it buffers completely once I change the video quality (even if I change it to higher quality).
Bit of an annoyance to do this everytime, but at least it can buffer completely without having to play it.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||johny1000||6/10/12 9:15 AM|
Be coming in?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||magaline||6/10/12 7:28 PM|
Some videos i watch will load the grey bar when i change the quality as well but if its a longer video it will buffer slow and if the video is over like an hour long it wont load the grey bar at all but i can still watch them.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||6/10/12 10:03 PM|
I'll try what Tenosis said and yet if that doesn't work, then I might have to consider that I may never watch any YouTube videos again if the videos won't buffer no matter what.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||6/10/12 10:10 PM|
OMG it worked! I'll try it out some more tomorrow and see if I can get videos to buffer completely when I change quality.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Tenosis||6/10/12 10:16 PM|
Rather annoying that we don't have the ability to edit our posts, even immediately after submitting them. Though I only now noticed that I said "butter" when I meant "buffer" in step #4.
Also, this isn't a new solution people, it's mentioned at the beginning of the thread. I'm just showing why we were told to do this and why it's not really a bug as we were lead to believe.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||cain919||6/12/12 3:18 PM|
Hi all, it helps to change the quality for it to buff, however it destroys the audio quality. and even if you change it back to 320 or even HD you can never get the audio quality at its best like what it was initially. please help.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||BardicDruid||6/13/12 10:21 AM|
Ok so now the only browser I can get video to play in is Chrome, and it still doesn't buffer. Well you've managed to upgrade YT to only work in one browser, when are you going to kill it too?????
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Phocks7||6/13/12 4:30 PM|
This was a bug? I thought it was a rather brilliant policy to save the YouTube servers' bandwidth, and piss off everyone with a bad internet connection.
The issue I've been having is the video will only load a small portion while paused, and will only resume loading while the video is playing.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||epopchock||6/13/12 8:23 PM|
I've tried lowering the quality, and the video still does NOT buffer while paused.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||epopchock||6/13/12 8:25 PM|
I could say the same thing to youtube. They need to DO SOMETHING.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||cain919||6/14/12 1:31 PM|
thanks for the help, however, im sorry but this isnt the fix. it destroys the audio quality.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||bookks||6/15/12 2:25 PM|
Yeah this is a horrible fix. Rarely works. Discovered this on my own before seeing this topic, but it doesn't do squat. I always tried to switch it to "Auto" and sometimes it works, but most of the time it won't even switch to auto. Changed my settings even to run low quality and it doesn't work.
This is all on Chrome of course, which for some reasons runs YT like crap. This forum sucks ass too now that I think of it. What a clusterf***.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||epopchock||6/17/12 6:24 PM|
I don't use google chrome, but I do use regular google. However, I understand your problem, because I've tried lowering the video quality, and all it does is distorts the audio, and it doesn't fix the slow-buffering issue.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||bill.danielson||6/17/12 10:44 PM|
OK, amazing as it sounds, after clearing my computer of history and buffers using the CCleaner -- which I did last week which seemed to help a little... It now seems worse than ever. I suspect another one of those great fixes were pushed out, tell me I am wrong.
Can listen to 10 seconds at a time... this has to be giving google a bad name in the most extreme of circumstances. I think you need some hulu consultants, something!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||bill.danielson||6/17/12 10:47 PM|
honestly, if you just reverted back to the original code then started over, I suspect you will be way ahead of the game!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||dsb_dsb||6/18/12 3:48 PM|
Actually the problems i am having are :-
1. I can't pause and let the video preload before watching which i have always done as net speeds here in India are not good enough to continuously buffer and watch & i don't watch to watch videos in the bad quality.
2. I can't let the video preload and mute so that when it get loaded i can watch it by clicking the replay button as now it again starts to preload the video.
And that leaves me with just one option which i don't want to use i.e. to download the video on my PC using various methods available & hence these youtube tactics are forcing me to misuse a nice resource.
Plz. revert back to original youtube & not only youtube i would like old google search & Gmail as well.

10 seconds buffering = pause each 10 seconds !!!!!
More than 30 minutes to view a 15 minutes video !!!!! Scandalous !
Counterproductive, irritating, lost time... FUCK OFF YOUTUBE NOW !
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Tenosis||6/21/12 7:26 PM|
Just to clarify for people, you have to change the video quality setting (sometimes twice) every time you watch a video. You can't just set it once and have it work forever.
Also, you don't have to leave it on the lower quality setting. I usually go from 480p to 360p and then back to 480p.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||CodeShark||6/23/12 12:38 PM|
This is even worse now than it used to be...
The last month or so, buffering while paused has almost been non-existing, and this "feture" has been one of the important things about YouTube making it great,.. now - with bandwidth problems - not able to watch anything..

@Eirik1: Same here. Hasn't been happening for me since recently. Google screwed something up. It seems one of their caching servers might be horribly overloaded, cause it only happens when I'm a loading a video through that specific server... (Which sadly happens to be taking place a lot).
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||frconstantine||7/4/12 6:46 AM|
It is still happening when I use Google the Youtube.The buffering is terrible or not at all. Should I switch to Internet Exployer? I´m tired of trying to download videos that takes all day!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||wcndave||7/5/12 1:13 AM|
I thought that YouTube had changed how it worked, so that to save bandwidth it only buffered the next "little bit" of a video, in case you were never going to watch it. Having a 300kbps connection, i need to wait for the entire video to buffer before playing. what I used to do was click on all the links i might be interested in, open in new tabs, go to bed, and watch the next day. However now it only buffers the next few seconds.
Seems looking at this thread, that this is not an intended feature, rather a bug, and one that has been around for a long time.
I can report that this happens in all browsers, to all videos at all quality levels.
Is there any official word from Google as to whether this is an acknowledged and open bug, that will be fixed?

Faced the same Problems lately, every video that i try to watch directly (not embedded) buffers really slow with many breaks, even the shitty commercial loads slowly. I have a slow internet connection and used to watch most of the videos in lower quality already without problems. Pausing will only buffer a short part then stop, making it really painful to watch longer replays etc.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||KingintheNorth||7/10/12 8:37 AM|
Just download and watch and have as little connection with youtube site as possible.:D
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||wcndave||7/10/12 8:48 AM|
how do you download it?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||EugeneZA||7/10/12 5:42 PM|
You can try keepvid.com but I also found that especially when it comes to "truth revealed" videos it becomes more and more difficult to even download it.
I therefore have a lot of "backup" like Free download manager and such to try and retry until I have it.
Just google it and you will find many add ons that can do downloads for you.
Why is it that the mind numbing stuff the "soma of the masses" are so easy to watch and download but when it comes to the real controversial stuff it becomes exceedingly difficult to watch and download?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Doc Peter||7/10/12 7:16 PM|
I had been finding it difficult to watch Youtube videos for the last two months, with the buffering problem getting progressively worse. I was also experiencing some slowness in accessing websites and downloading emails. Speed tests showed a dramatic loss in download speeds, to about 0.45KBps. I finally solved all these problems with a fairly simple change made by a cable company techie -- he replaced my cable modem's power supply and everything went back to normal. This cost me nothing extra, since I have a basic contract for wire service. Now, the Youtube videos load fast and I haven't seen the dreaded spinning grey circle. I'm not sure if this is the solution for others, but if you have speed problems as indicated by speed test, you may want to give this a try. Good luck!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||KyleHalsey||7/12/12 3:24 AM|
I too am having the same problem and so are at least three people I work with. The buffering problem seems to have become worse over the last month.
I use Youtube videos on a playlist to listen to music whilst working but a video will only load for the first few seconds and then stop buffering. If you then click back before the buffer area, a little more will load and then stop again.
Basically you cannot have interrupted play of any video regardless of quality. I have a 30mb cable connection at home and I just tested my work connection...100mb d/l and 30mb u/l same problem. Also Chrome/Firefox just as bad.
This is crazy - Google please divert some SWE's from Google+ to the Youtube team!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||KingintheNorth||7/12/12 4:00 AM|
I read that it's because youtube are tight and have reduced running costs. That's the best way to reduce visitors. Fuckwits.:D
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||synoptic12||7/12/12 5:47 AM|
Yes, I tried that yesterday. Upon lowering the video quality, the 'buffering' was effective. However, whom wishes to view a video in lower quality?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||yowanvista||7/12/12 7:01 AM|
It's been almost 2 Months since this issue appeared and no one ever bothered to fix the damn thing! Still the same here. Nothing was fixed, and NO it's not up to me to lower the video quality since the real problem is something on YouTube's side. Fix your dreaded system before telling us to lower the quality of videos.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Concordia||7/12/12 10:44 AM|
Same problem here from France, I couldn´t buffer more than a few seconds. I tried what Tenosis said, change the quality of the video, and it worked. Then I put it back to how it was originaly and there was no more problems. I use Firefox, not Chrome... Good thing I found a solution here, it was making me VERY nervous ´cause it was like this since weeks!!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Doc Peter||7/13/12 11:23 AM|
Did anyone check out the power supply of their cable modem, or try a new power supply, if that is possible?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKeane||7/13/12 2:29 PM|
You don't have to lower the video quality. All you need to do is change it - that can mean lowering it or raising it, and then switch back to your original preference. You can then watch the video as you want, with pausing on buffer.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||KingintheNorth||7/14/12 2:17 AM|
This has worked for me on two videos. I hope it continues to work.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Wildcards||7/17/12 11:37 AM|
I've never actually had any success trying to fix my flash player problems by clearing cookies and cache setting
I solved my not buffering/loading problems by disabling the chrome flash player, or at least that`s what I I recall reading, that Chrome uses its own internal flash player instead of adobe. If this information is correct, I don't know, I do know, that disabling this internal player fixed all my issues.
2) Upper right corner, click on the details plus sign
3) Scroll down find the flash player, its usually only two DLL files.
4) Disable all those that are located in your c:\users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome (internal flash player)and leave only the one located in the c:\windows folder enabled.
5) restart chrome (close browser)
This fixed all my problems.
Hope this helps
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||andypost||7/17/12 11:43 AM|
Same here I have a super fast connection too. Cannot watch any YouTube Videos, the quality is stuck on a buffer, 1080p Useless :(
Whats been changed ? Tried on 3 different browsers now and no luck.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||7/17/12 9:18 PM|
I used to have this problem were the video would only buffer 50 seconds into the video and then stop and would not buffer anymore. Go to a video, right click it and select "Show video info." Notice it will be TagStreamPlayer, the HTTP will be 0 kbps. Change the quality. It should now be "HTTPVideoPlayer", and the video should for the most part buffer ALL the way to the end. If the video is only offering 360p and 240p, change it to 240p and back to 360p and the info will show "HTTPVideoPlayer" still up there and will buffer to the end. Hope this helps.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||DGIY19||7/17/12 9:23 PM|
Okay, now that I've said all that, here's another problem. What if the video only has 240p? Well you can't change the quality because 240p is the only quality you have BUT you need to change the quality if you hope to get the video to buffer completely, or else you might get stuck with the video playing 5 or 10 seconds in and then the white circle will appear, then the video will play, then the white circle will appear and so on. So my question is, how do we watch a video if it only has 240p, other than the whole stop and start, stop and start. NOTE: These mostly appear before 2010 but I'd thought I'd mention this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||KingintheNorth||7/17/12 10:58 PM|
It should still have the auto option. I have done it with one that had only one option, but auto as well, it still worked.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||rwired||7/18/12 10:54 AM|
Talk about dropping the ball big time. Even when all these problems were fixed, audio is terrible in chrome, but perfectly OK in FF and IE. What is google doing?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Nerbit||7/18/12 3:13 PM|
Hey! I FIXED the buffer stop problem! Right click the YouTube video and select "xxxx" (I don't remember the exact name because, now that it's fixed, I can't recreate the same choices). Anyway, it has to do with disabling the YouTube HTML5 Video Player. You'll find a check box to "leave the HTLM5 trial player" at the bottom of the page that you get routed to after right-clicking the magic "xxxx" selection. HTLM5 a trial player that is an alternative to the standard flash player. Once I disabled the HTLM5 Video player my video's buffered completely and don't play all the way through! I hope it works for you too.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||Nerbit||7/18/12 3:17 PM|
Okay... I should have read my post before sending it off. My last sentence should say: Once I disabled the HTLM Video player, my videos now completely buffer and the paly all the way through, nonstop. Bottom line: DISABLE the HTLM5 Video Player in YouTube!!!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||xXRainKingXx||7/18/12 6:11 PM|
Thank you Google for destroying YouTube.
What was once a clean, fun site that ran quickly and had minor problems, is now a poorly designed, slow, glitchy mess with endless problems.
As for the video buffering, it's a joke.
Here's my daily experience on YouTube.
I'm on 16mb broadband and if I click ANY video, it will stop and start buffering within the first few seconds of being played (this can take a good 15 seconds before its done), and then it just does it again about 5 seconds later. Well played Google.
If I ever do get a video to start streaming correctly, it will usually freeze at some random point and just stop buffering... Then you have to tinker around by clicking random points in the video to get the buffering to continue. Again, well played Google.
Google, If you have the old YouTube site archived from 2005-2008, just switch back to that, there may not be any social networking integration, but at least that site fucking worked.
I could on and on about how terrible YouTube is nowadays because it really is horrendous, but I'll leave it at that.

I'm not using the HTML5 player and the buffering problem is unbearable. It used to be such a great site, but I now hardly use it because of this.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||GugleKrahp||7/21/12 9:36 AM|
Your statement is false. When I switch the quality, the idiot player resets the buffer, starting on the current timeline (eg, 2:45). From 2:45 on, it'll have buffering problems, again.
Do you people even test the things you suggest?

Like many others angry about this problem I have desperately tried the recommended 'fixes' - changing the video quality, deleting browser history and cookies etc., etc. Nothing sorts the problem, so like many others I can only conclude that the issue lies with YT themselves and, since it has been going on for MONTHS now, it would seem that they haven't got a clue what's wrong and have no idea how to get there own 'site working correctly! I think I'm going to close my account and leave them to it, and I will most likely NEVER come back! Crap is crap and there's only so much one can tolerate!
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||FalloutJack||7/25/12 7:36 PM|
Why haven't you been doing anything? Fix the problem! SAY something! That's what the words are for! If you're incapable of doing the job, admit it and get someone who CAN. Stop ignoring the problem, BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER EVER GO AWAY. Where are the updates? Why haven't you said anything? Answer the question! Stop wasting our time! GET TO WORK. We're all been waiting months on end for you people to do your jobs. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN THERE?
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||GugleKrahp||7/27/12 9:53 PM|
Well, since the girls at Goontube, won't answer, I've found a script called ViewTube. It allows you to watch the vids using several methods; eg HTML5, Quicktime, WMP, etc. BEST PART is it it easily allows you to DOWNLOAD the vid so you can watch it later on WITHOUT buffering. HA, Goontube!

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||NeoMantis||7/28/12 6:41 AM|
Whatever fix was appplied it obvoisly hasn't been effective as this problem is still occuring. Changing the quality of the video is a workaround that might work on the site itself but it's not really an option when watching Youtube videos on an iPad or through XBMC. I really hope that this is still being investigated and that a real solution is forthcoming.
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||russxl||7/31/12 8:49 AM|
Hey is this actually a 'feature' you rolled out to save bandwidth? Cause it's really horrible and totally destroys the user experience for me. Every single video I watch regardless of quality will buffer for like 20 seconds then stop. It will continue to buffer if I start playback but will IMMEDIATELY stop if I pause. This behavior is repeatable and persistent.

So new update and this problem is still there along with the added bonus of the audio not not loading until the video is at like 10 secs in then it starts playing the audio from the start.

|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||HesteBremse||8/12/12 4:08 PM|
Yea the article tips is okay, but i usually do clear the cashe and change the vid settings etc. - It does not always help thou.
Would be a great feature if a "preeload function" (Button) could be integrated in the Tube Controls.
It might cause problems on the Servers (read abuse) but never the less it find i would be a great feature.
Id rather wait 20 mins or more, go do something else and then return to get well flowing vid experience.
Also i cant´really figure out how the "auto" quality works, it usually always goes on highest settings and then shortly after starts the stalling. Then pausing and changing the vis quality - just like explainend in the article below. But it only works approximately 50% of the times.
Furthermore i have noticed that even when YouTube is preecashing it often stops the cash after a little while. Perhaps it´s too save the servers or when a lot of users are on? (it did not to that a couple of years ago) - it is thou quite annoying since it often do not continue the cash when you re hit the play button to continue.
I have been testing it on fully updated browsers: Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox - and get the same experience on all three.

Yeah, I've been having this issue as well. It's gotten worse within the past month or so for me. Extremely annoying...
|Re: Update: Videos Not Buffering While Paused||ytKeane||6/4/13 4:45 PM|
Since the workaround for this issue was posted sometime ago and is at the top of this thread, I'm going to close it to new replies for the time being.
"I just wanted to remind everyone about this tip that we posted last month:
If you want your videos to buffer while paused, change the quality of the video and buffering will occur on pause.
I'll unlock it if anything changes. Thanks!
