Can't play videos anymore... suspect install of Windows 7 SP1 to be the problem! Xian 2/23/11 7:53 AM
Well, the title says it all ;) The screen (videoframe) is simply black and there's no controls. Other flash-based sites (also video) work fine.

Try disabling hardware accelleration. Right-click on the black space where the video should be, and you should see an option to disable hardware accelleration.

Same problem here, started after I installed Win 7 SP1. YouTube videos play just fine if they are embedded on other sites (such as Facebook), but not on the YouTube pages. Disabling HW acceleration doesn't help, it doesn't seem able to load the movies.

However, the problem is only encountered in Firefox. Internet Explorer plays YouTube videos just fine.

Works now! Fastest fix ever :)

Well, I did escalate this, but I haven't been told anyone was working on it and I wouldn't have expected it to be fixed that quickly. Can you think of anything you did that might have fixed it? Maybe you rebooted your computer or something?

Xian, how's it looking for you?

I have the same issue on chrome 9.0.597.98 and flash 10.2.154.12

Same issue here, in firefox. I can watch videos embedded on other sites, and I can watch videos in IE. But I can't watch them in firefox on the main site. I also can't disable hardware acceleration as there is no option for that when I right click the space where the video should be. There is only the about button, and a grayed out button saying video not loaded.
Re: Can't play videos anymore... suspect install of Windows 7 SP1 to be the problem! Xian 2/23/11 4:04 PM
@rewboss et al.

I got it to work!

I'm running Chrome (11.0.672.2 dev) so there's no option to disable hardware acceleration from the context (right-click) menu but I did a "Clear browsing data..." and it started working again. I had already rebooted my machine an extra time after installing Win 7 SP1 as well as opened and closed the browser a few times AND cleared browsing history, download history and cache... but I hadn't cleared cookies. So after checking cookies as well in the  "Clear browsing data..." settings and restarting the browser YouTube magically began to work again :) So I suspect a cookie had gone "bad" somehow!?

Xian: Thanks for the info. That's very helpful.

Thebum07 and markslut: Are you also using Windows 7 with SP1?
Re: Can't play videos anymore... suspect install of Windows 7 SP1 to be the problem! markslut 2/23/11 11:51 PM
Yes updated to SP1 yesterday - and clear browsing history worked for me as well!
Re: Can't play videos anymore... suspect install of Windows 7 SP1 to be the problem! JoelOman 2/24/11 12:53 AM
I'm only having trouble playing back videos in 480p, 720p and 1080p...
In 360 and lower the videos work fine, but when I switch up to a higher resolution, the video hangs up!
I can still hear the sound, but the video freezes!

I'm also using Windows 7, 64 Bit, don't actually know if SP1 is installed... :P

Any help would be useful! Thanks!

As far as I'm aware I haven't updated to SP1. But it works today for some reason, so not sure what went wrong yesterday.

I might have found the answer! I been having black box screen without video controls on UT since updating to AFP ver10.2 running on WIN EXP ver9 on WIN 7 ULT. Have tried all "fixes" on most forums, inc. using Adobe unistaller and then re-istalling, re-setting web security etc to allow activ-X, etc. etc. None of these worked, yet my other computer has AFP ver10.2 on WIN EXP 8 on WIN XP3 and works fine!!! AARRG!! I even had settings on both computers the same!!   THE FIX I downloaded last night the new service pack from microsoft KB2484033, and KB976932 (this one took about 1/2hr to download and anther 1/2hr to install!! 85ishMb size. and so far I can watch UT as per normal!!!!

Ye gods, when this thread started it seemed like such a simple problem -- one operating system configuration, one browser, one Flash version.

To recap then:

- It seems to affect people using Flash 10.2.

- Everyone with this problem is using Windows 7.

- Mostly it happens when you install SP1, but in one case it stopped when SP1 was installed.

- It doesn't affect all browsers at the same time, but can affect any of them.

- Sometimes the problem disappears by itself. Sometimes clearing cookies will solve the problem.

Have I got all that approximate correct?
Re: Can't play videos anymore... suspect install of Windows 7 SP1 to be the problem! DAVALRAV 2/24/11 3:05 AM

I think its a conflict of WIN 7, WIN EXP9 and AFP ver10.2 even if you do the is it a 32bit or 64bit system, or browser question and workarounds, as this didn't work for me! Like I said my old computer running XP3, WIN EXP8 with the new AFP ver10.2 was brill first time around. But the other compuer worked ok then didn't on UT. Anyway as I said the updates from windows seem to have sorted it out!! so far, touch wood etc. etc.

Hey, thanks for this thread, I'm glad I'm not alone!

Anyways, my problem is also very similar. I can play Youtube fine, but sites like bbc.com/news and Vevo.com do not work for me.

I just did the windows 7 update, and have latest versions of FLash and Firefox.

Any suggestions would be great

Yes same problem here. After updating Win7, youtube was out! Only embedded vids can be played here as well.

It's been several days now, what a shame...!

Sure hope a fix shows up soon.  I have the same problem after installing SP1.  Tried all above fixes with no luck so far.  If I figure it out I will post same.

I'm glad I'm not the only one too. Cookies and caches everything cleared up, 1st video after the delete of private data played fine but then things turned black again. Win 7 after SP1, Opera 11.01, latest flash player.

I've just uninstalled SP1, you can forget about it... it doesn't fix anything ! It's driving me crazy.

My config:

Q8400 + Asus Rampage Extreme
2 x Radeon HD3870 (Catalyst v11.2)
Win7 orig. -> SP1 -> original
DirectX 11 + .NET Framework 4 + Firefox 4b12 + Flash Player 10.2.152.32

I really don't see... I'm thinking about formatting but I'm so lazy to do it :'(

Youtube also quit for me after upgrading to Win 7 SP1.  Running Firefox 3.x and Adobe Flash 10.2.  Uninstalling SP 1 did nothing, upgraded to Firefox 4, ran Adobe's Flash uninstaller and reinstalled, still nothing.  Completely uninstalled Firefox, including all personal settings and data, uninstalled Flash again, rebooted, reinstalled Firefox 4, Flash 10.2, rebooted, still broken.  The only way I can get a video to play is by clearing cookies, then 1 video will play.  The very next one is back to black screen, though I will get audio.  It does work in Internet Explorer 8.  Also have tried disabling my ad blocker (Ad Block Plus) in Firefox.  Nothing seems to work...looking forward to someone figuring this out.  I'll post if I do in the mean time.

This problem is occuring on my Gateway NV7316u. (laptop)

Should be fixed now!

For ccleaner users with this W7 SP1 problem:

- Update ccleaner to v3.04

- Make sure the Adobe Flash Player box is checked to be cleaned.

- Run that baby.

- E Voila

It seems uninstalling the above mentioned service packs (KB976932 and KB2484033) resolved my issue.  So to recap, I'm now running Firefox 4, Flash 10.2, on Windows 7 without SP1 installed, and had to additionally remove those patches to get this working.  Hopefully others may find this useful.
Thanks, Ryan

If you can't watch video's on youtube than it's probably your flashplayer 10.2.

I've had this issue too without win7 SP1 installed on my system.
Chrome players showed perfectly, cromeless players didn't.
The thing you have to do to get rid of the flashplayer issue is:

-right click on your flash application
-settings
-uncheck/disable "Hardware acceleration".

You should now be able to watch youtube video's again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
***NOTE:***

You can NOT acces the "settings" menu via a youtube video.
Youl have to search for another random flash application somewhere out on the internet.
Here is a good example:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did it work?
