Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... YouTube Diego 2/16/11 4:17 PM
Some of you are having issues watching YouTube Videos. If you can hear audio, but are not seeing the video, you've come to the right place. Please respond below with the following information...the more info you provide us the sooner we can help you:

1) What do you see: (a black box, white box, a green line, weird colors -- please be specific)
2) Your Operating System (Mac OSX, Windows 7, Windows XP, etc)
3) Internet Browser and version (Safari, Chome 7, Internet Explorer 7, Opera, etc)
4) Video Card if you know it
5) Adobe Flash version if you know it

As a temporary workaround, you can try one, or both, of the following:

1) Right click on the player > click Settings > Disable Hardware Acceleration > Refresh your Internet Browser
2) Try closing your browser and re-load the video.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.  We really appreciate your detailed feedback.  Thanks for your patience.

2011-02-22
IF you are a SAFARI user -- please use either of these workarounds:

  • Go to http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html - settings are accessible when right-clicking on this player, so users can disable hardware acceleration here

  • Quit Safari, go into the Applications folder, right-click on Safari, select Get Info, check Open in 32-bit mode option

    1. Black box, ghosting on interface options, where like I hover over for a timestamp, it shows up, but then it just stays there, y'know? Like that old infamous XP glitch.
    2. Windows 7 64 bit.
    3. Chrome 9.0 beta.
    4. ATI HD5850 1GB.
    5. The latest one, just reinstalled and still not working.

Are the workarounds suggested above working for you?  If so, which one? Thanks.

Disabling the hardware acceleration works.  Youtube plays fine with IE, even with hardware acceleration enabled.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Myk63 2/16/11 4:58 PM
    1) Black screen with anything that shows on the video portion of it frozen there for the duration.
    2) Windows 7 64bit
    3) Firefox, Chrome don't work. IE8 works.
    4) ATI Radeon HD 4200
    5) 10.2.152.26

"Settings" is greyed out so there is no place to turn off acceleration.

    1) Empty black box, no controls, no video, no sound, nothing whatsoever where the video is supposed to be.  everything else looks normal.   **WEIRD: if i search through Bing for a video, i can play it in the Bing frame (even on safari), but the same video will not play on the youtube site if i navigate away from the Bing page. **
    2) Mac OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard
    3) Safari 5.0.3  (I update regularly and initially checked the update to make sure it wasn't that)  **ODDLY: I also have firefox and youtube is working fine on that?  makes no sense to me.  safari is my primary and preferred browser.
    4) no idea
    5) 10.2, I JUST updated it 15 minutes ago.  still not working :(

It is baffling.  It was working just lovely and suddenly quit.   I've never had any issues with youtube or any video issues period.  I hope you can fix it quickly!

Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... astronetster 2/17/11 3:33 AM
Does youtube ever trying to solve this prob? I can see a lot of people with this problem. Is it a virus?

    1) black screen and ghosting
    2) Windows 7 64 bit
    3) Chrome, IE (I am sure both of them are latest)
    4) nVidia GeForce 540M
    5) Flash - Just re-installed.

It was playing fine, but suddenly stops. But it is weird that I can play videos from facebook links AND IN THEIR CHANNEL! Furthermore, I cant watch fullscreen in anything video. And I can also play videos from other websites.
When I right-clicked, the "setting" is disabled. Please help asap.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... astronetster 2/17/11 3:42 AM
well I seem to have solved the problem by going to this link --> http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html
then you can right click and see the "setting" button is then enabled. Click the setting and unchecked the "Enable hardware acceleration". It worked for me.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... ham90mack 2/17/11 3:50 AM
    1) No video; anything that appears where the video is supposed to be perpetually stays behind. Audio does work just fine.
    2) Windows 7 32-bit
    3) Chrome 9.0.597.98 beta and Firefox 3.6.13. Works in IE8 though.
    4) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
    5) 10.2.154.12 in Chrome, 10.2.152.26 in Firefox and IE8

This issue indeed only happens on the main video playback page (the one with all the comments) and not the embedded player or the player in channels.  Plus, it works just fine in IE8.

When right clicking on the player and clicking on show video info, the last line of text says software video rendering.  Usually it said undefined video rendering for me (and it says undefined video rendering when I actually do change to software rendering, as described below).

To change the setting to software rendering, use a Flash ad or a YouTube player on a channel page (this is disabled on the video page).  Right click the Flash object and click on settings.  In the first tab of the window thing that appears, uncheck the "Enable hardware acceleration" box.  Now if you go back to a video page, the player will work just fine.  There are a few side effects though; software rendering means that the CPU will be doing the job of resizing the video, which makes full screen video look pixely instead of smooth.  But at least it works...

I am guessing that this issue is probably caused by the latest version of the YouTube video player (which is used on the video pages, but older versions are used for embeds and channel pages), likely in combination with the latest version of Flash as well, that fails to make the proper hardware drawing surface for the video when initializing (or maybe uses it improperly).  Since Flash runs differently under IE (being ActiveX), the drawing surface is initialized/used properly, but a bug in the other browser version of Flash combined with the latest YouTube player causes the surface to be initialized/used improperly.  Unless the YouTube player works differently depending on whether it detects it's in IE or another web browser.  In any case, it's one or the other's fault, or both.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... ham90mack 2/17/11 4:07 AM
Oh yeah, video advertisements play fine in the video page's player.  The actual video exhibits the black ghosting box though.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Myk63 2/17/11 4:48 AM
Using the test page to get "settings" and shut off hardware acceleration fixed my problem in Firefox.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... astronetster 2/17/11 4:50 AM
I suppose it might be from recent adobe flash update. I rmb that it was just updated when I switched on my computer today and then it started.

    1) black screen, and the play bar leaves a ghosted image on it as well as when I hover over it and the little time marker comes up, it also leaves a ghosted image.
    2) Vista
    3) Firefox version 3.6.13
    4) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670
    5) 10.2.152.26

Both fixes do not work for me,   'Settings' is greyed out si i cannot access it.... and restarting/refreshing/reloading/rebooting doesn't work either.

    1) Black screen, time progress bar, hovering across the progress bar leaves a trail of the time speech-bubble indicator, white play icon is shown in the center of the black screen when playing and white pause icon when paused

    1) A black box with none of the video controls down below.  Just a solid black rectangle where the video should be.  If I right-click the black rectangle, no contextual menu/dropdown of any sort appears
    2) Mac OS 10.6.6
    3) Safari 5.0.3
    4) Intel GMA 950 (I think?)
    5) 10,2,152,26

I get no audio or any sign that the video is playing.  This only happens when I go to a video's page, they play fine when embedded.  Also, there is no problem if I use Firefox.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Flash, repairing permissions on my HD, reset Safari, restarted several times.  It happened randomly in the middle of the day after it had been working fine earlier.

That's all the description I can think of.

Black screen, no progress bar no sound

youtube videos, on youtube's site, won't load for me. Mac OS 10.6.6, Safari 5.0.3

They DO load if it's an embedded video.
They DO load if I use a different browser
They DO load if I change Safari's user agent to something else (onlly tried firefox, but it worked)

I turned off extensions, no change.

In fact, the problem is only there when the user agent is Safari 5.0.3 Mac

    Applejack didn't fix it

    Onyx didn't fix it

    Reinstalling Flash didn't fix it

Reinstalling Safari DID NOT fix it.

Trashing the plist DID NOT fix it

Deleting youtube's cookies DID NOT fix it

Deleting Safari's cache DID NOT fix it

    Reinstalled Safari as well, 5.0.3...

Every YouTube video is black, no audio, no buffering etc. However, everything is fine on Firefox.
I've tried resetting Safari, emptying cache, deleting cookies, etc, but nothing seems to work!

Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... dennilfloss 2/17/11 9:03 AM
    1) Black screen, time progress bar, hovering across the progress bar leaves a trail of the time speech-bubble indicator, white play icon is shown, Audio is fine  (The same as slimfit & jmeddnumba1)
    2) Windows 7 home premium 64bit
3)Avant Browser and Internet Explorer 8 exhibit the problem. Opera doesn't.
    4) Diamond ATI Radeon 4870 1GB factory settings
    5) The latest version of Adobe Flash. 10.2.152.26

I did manage to access the display settings by changing them in an embedded video. They are greyed out on Youtube page. Disabled hardware acceleration solved the problem but 1080P videos now are a tiny bit jerky. Problem reappears if I re-enable hardware acceleration.

I initially thought this was caused by the latest Silverlight update as it appeared right after the update.
    More details in this thread.

Youtube does work in firefox but not safari and the videos work in safari if embedded in a different page, but not on the youtube page

I must've tried to play 15 videos all, no sound and black screen. But everything was fine a couple of days ago.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... philippe.gregoire 2/17/11 9:26 AM

    4. GMA X3100
    5. Just installed latest version.

Like everyone else, doesn't work at all in safari when i'm on a youtube page. Work if it's via another website or in Firefox.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... WHFRhys 2/17/11 10:22 AM
    1) What do you see: Black box, if I click on the screen, the play button will stay, and if the song ends and restarts it will show song suggestions
    2) Your Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    3) Internet Browser and version:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13
    4) Video Card if you know it: ATI Mobility Radein HD 5650
    5) Adobe Flash version if you know it: 10,2,152,26

Cant select settings as its greyed-out and impossible to select.

    In-bedded videos work.

Videos work on Internet Explorer 8, but I prefer to use FireFox.

If an email reply with a FireFox fix could be sent would be great.

It worked yesterday, then it randomly stopped working when I went from one video to the next.

umm why do other threads keep closing and being directed to this one when this is not the problem? there are a lot of people who are getting a black screen and NO audio...nothing is working with the video and the threads and being closed and directed to this one when this is not the problem we are having

Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Chicavq 2/17/11 10:42 AM
    1) black box, no controls bar, no video, no sound. Right-click does not work (the menu does not appear). However, managed to reach the menu from http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html, unchecked the "Enable hardware acceleration" but nothing changed. Like the others, I can watch videos embedded for example in Facebook etc.
    2) Mac OSX 10.6.5

Is google/youtube actually doing anything to help us? because this is happening across different OS and Browsers. Clearly a Youtube problem.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... mikeyk777 2/17/11 11:29 AM

Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... oswyn123 2/17/11 11:55 AM
    1) A black box. Solid black rectangle where the video should be.  If I right-click the black rectangle, no contextual menu/dropdown of any sort appears
    2) Mac OS 10.6.6
    3) Safari 5.0.3
    4) Intel GMA 950
    5) Latest Flash, downloaded and re-installed today

I get no audio or any sign that the video is playing - only on youtube. Embedded works still.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Zaranyzerak 2/17/11 12:00 PM
    1) Black box, audio only.  Controls "trail" if I mouse over them.  Going full screen, controls again "trail" and remain on the screen.
    2) Windows 7 Home
    3) Firefox 3.6.13
    4) ATI Radeon 4200 Integrated graphics
    5) Flash 10.2.152.26

Closing and reloading does not work.

Cannot de-select Hardware Acceleration, as "Settings" link is greyed out.

Videos play fine on main channel page of users, but not on individual video pages.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Fishbeard 2/17/11 12:15 PM
    1) Black screen with anything that shows on the video portion of it frozen there for the duration.
    2) Windows 7 32bit
    3) Firefox 3.6.13
    4) Intel HD Graphics (integrated into HP 8440p notebook)
    5) Adobe Flash Player 10.2.152.26

"Settings" is greyed out so there is no place to turn off acceleration.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Green Grazing 2/17/11 12:35 PM
    1) Black screen.  Ghosting of timestamps across the play bar when I mouse over it - the same as the screenshot posted by DonnyDonster a few posts above this one.  Audio is fine.
    2) Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit
    3) Happening in Firefox 3.6.13 and in Chrome.
    4) ATI Radeon 5870
    5) version 10.2.152.26 on Firefox, version 10.2.154.12 in Chrome.

As with the other reports, 'Settings' is greyed out and unusable.

Not sure you or anyone else wants to hear this, but the same Flash versions are still playing videos just fine from sites such as dailymotion.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Dan Backslide 2/17/11 1:02 PM
    1) Black screen with ghosting, audio and interface is fine.
    2) Windows 7 Home Premium
    3) Mozilla Firefox Version 3.6.13 (doesn't work in IE either)
    4) ATI Radeon HD 5770
    5) 10.2.152.26

Disabling hardware acceleration seems to have solved it for now. For people where "settings" is grayed out, find any other flash video or swf file and disable it from there.

    4) NVIDIA GT 335M

I can successfully view videos if they are directly on the uploader's actual channel. However, it goes black when going full screen, and all other videos are black in any setting other than an uploader's channel. Also, it seems I can see ads even when I can't see the actual video that immediately follows.

    Max OSx and Safari.

I can view the videos only from channels. Not the actual video page.

still having issues. i've read it works on IE or firefox, but i can't get it to work on either. i've tried the "work around" but the settings function on the drop down menu is greyed out, so i can't click on it. has there been no progress in resolving this issue? i'm having some serious youtube withdrawals. ><
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... ham90mack 2/17/11 6:33 PM
The first post really needs to be edited, or the popular answer needs to be voted down to get this point across.

Go to any page with a Flash object on it other than a video page.  A user's channel will do.  You can access the settings function in the drop down menu from there.

Turning off hardware acceleration should solve the issue, though it should not be a permanent solution, as hardware acceleration offloads image stretching to the GPU (which is designed to manipulate images) and software acceleration causes pixelation when stretching videos to full screen, rather than smoothing the pixels.

    Workaround:
    1. Activate "Show develop menu in menu bar" in Safari Preferences > Advanced.

    1) Black screen, time progress bar, hovering across the progress bar leaves a trail of the time speech-bubble indicator, white play icon is shown in the center of the black screen when playing and white pause icon when paused(copied from another post!!!!! steal).

At some point, a few days ago, firefox stopped playing the video for the youtube videos; however, it played video from other websites(google). I think there was a flash update from adobe, I don;t remember if the video issue happened right after or if it happened later. (Settings greyed out)

Internet explorer was will working fine until I wanted to watch a video that required flash player 10. I updated flash player and instantly had this issue.

    Flash right-click Settings greyed out.

e.g. this seems to be a problem (obviously) in both Chrome's custom Flash and the general one (before being asked to upgrade earlier tonight, Chrome 10 didn't work, but FF4 worked fine)
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... LastSilmaril 2/17/11 10:23 PM
So actually, Flash is 10.2.154.12 in Chrome (which has it's own flash), and 10.2.152.26 for Firefox.
I'm sure Google knew that, just trying to be precise.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... LastSilmaril 2/17/11 10:37 PM
OK, everybody needs to read this post from ham90mack, above:

"Go to any page with a Flash object on it other than a video page.  A user's channel will do.  You can access the settings function in the drop down menu from there."

That way, you can shut off hardware acceleration per Diego's instructions:

"1) Right click on the player > click Settings > Disable Hardware Acceleration > Refresh your Internet Browser"

and everything will work fine again.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... dennilfloss 2/17/11 10:40 PM
Some developer on the Pre Central forums hinted at this being the issue.

    1) A rectangular black box and nothing else.No play/pause button, no progress bar, etc.
    2) Windows 7 Professional
    3) Chrome 7, Internet Explorer 7
    4) Intel R HD Graphics, Nvidia GeForce310m

I tried all what has been posted in you tube help but it doesn't work however, I found a temporary solution.
This is just a temporary solution for those who want to watch videos with the progress bar and play back controls appearing at the bottom of the video.
Solution: After selecting a particular video and before the video plays, click on the POP-OUT button.

    3) Firefox 4.0b11
    4) NVIDIA GT 420M
    5) 10.2.152.26 (latest).

Problems started appearing after the latest flash update, everything was working nicely before that. Disabling hardware acceleration fixed it for me.

"Your temporary fix doesn't work either..The Setting isn't highlighted."
Yeah, the Setting is gonna be greyed out on a youtube page. but if you go to page with an embedded video, you'll be able to select it and then shut off hardware acceleration there.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... omninova7 2/18/11 3:02 AM
    1) Solid black box
    2) Windows 7 Professional
    3) IE, Firefox, and Chrome (all up to date)
    4) NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150
    5) Adobe Flash 10.2.152.26

The problem occurred when I happened to update my adobe flash to the latest one. I updated, uninstalled, and reinstalled Adobe Flash and all my browsers. I used ccleaner and scanned with AVG on my computer just in case it's on my side (negative). I checked hulu.com and other websites that use adobe flash, and they worked flawlessly. So I'm pretty sure the issue is with Youtube/Google. In addition, I tried to do the temporary workaround, but I couldn't since the right click, select settings is not available (the settings is gray and can't be selected)... someone should get on this problem quickly since I'm sure a lot more people have this problem. It's day three already since the first posting here about the problem, and it's still not resolved. That's not good at all, considering the dependency between properly playing videos and Youtube...
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... omninova7 2/18/11 3:12 AM
Hmm okay, I accidentally hit full screen when I was on Youtube, and the video worked. I tested a few more times, and it'll initially have the problems of the black box with the audio still working, but once I went to full screen and back to regular mode, it was fine. Weird, but annoying...
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Xoler92 2/18/11 3:13 AM
I don't know if this works for everyone, but I found that watching any video by pressing the "pop out" works just fine.

    1) Just a black box, time indicator is moving, leaving time indications on the video screen, change of hue on the red loading bar in the middle of the bar.
    2) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
    3) Firefox 3.6.13
    4) ATI HD4650
    5) 10.2.152.26

On any other site than Youtube all videos play without problems. Yesterday out of the blue this problem appeared on Youtube. I did not beforehand install, change or remove anything related to players, codecs or plugins. After finding out, I went through the process of checking out all possible errors. Un- and re-installed Flash, disabling various plugins in FF, in a rage even deleted Quicktime, since some said there is a problem there. It's not. It's clearly on Youtube's side, using the answers given earlier I changed my player settings on another site (cause also with me the 'settings' box was grayed out) by unticking the hardware acceleration box. The result is shocking... on any site I still don't have problems playing back. On Youtube, however, all video's are blocky, not even playing full-screen (afraid to do so, I don't want to hurt my eyes). And I mean BLOCKY! Going back to SuperNES-like video.... while using mp4/H.264 compression techniques... wow. Didn't think it was possible. Come on guys and gals, do something about it.

black bar where seek / progress bar is usually located. I can't see volume, play button etc. I followed the link on the other topic which brought me here. the video plays fine and the functionality still works (mouse wheel controls volume, if I click where I think the seek bar is located, it seeks properly and pause/play works if I click (blindly) int the region where I think the button could be.

I'm not sure the issue I'm experiencing is the same discussed here, but I do see a black screen and hear the audio in the following situation:

    i. Create a que with a few videos
    ii. Start playing the queue
iii. Switch to full screen mode
iv. wait for the first video to finish  (so far everything works fine)
    v. => The next video is automatically loaded, but then the screen is completely black and I only hear audio.

In my case the workaround is simply to exit full screen mode with the ESC key, then the video starts to be displayed properly and then I can reenter fullscreen and see the video without issue.
Until the video is finished and the next one is automatically loaded: then the issue repeats.

    Very annoying.

But I haven't touched any player settings: just exiting and reentering fullscreen fixes the problem (temporarily).

1)black box with no control buttons (ghosted/blackened) like time progress bar, play/pause etc
    2)windows 7 32 bit
    3)mozilla firefox 3.6.13
    4)nvidia geforce 310m
    5)10.2.152.26

    Solution:
    1) Right click on the player > click Settings > Disable Hardware Acceleration > Refresh your Internet Browser
    2) Try closing your browser and re-load the video.

if above doesn't work (maybe because settings can't be access) then try the following:
1)select/play any video in youtube, as the player starts buffing or is not started yet, you can see the control buttons (progress bar, play/pause, etc.)
for a moment, click the play/pause button before the video starts playing, so that the control buttons will stay or become visible (you must be fast for
this one or else control buttons will be disappear/ghosted/blackened)
2)click the pop out button (seen at the lower right of the video screen where you can find 4 buttons (resolution settings(480p,360p,240p), pop out, expand/shrink and full screen/exitfullscreen)
3)as you click the pop out, a new window will appear, then perform right click on the player
4)after right clicking the player, click Settings (this time Settings is accessible)
5)in the display interface, uncheck the Enable Hardware Acceleration
    6)refresh/restart the internet browser.

    OR

    1)simply visit this site: http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html
    2)right click on the player
3)click Settings (Settings is accessible in here)
    4)uncheck the Enable Hardware Acceleration
    5)refresh/restart the internet browser

and we are done. i hope this will help you.. :)

Whoever closed the Safari specific thread got it wrong, this thread is for black but with sound working. The Safari issue is that you get nothing - you can't even right click to get the Flash plugin options.

However, there is a fix for the Safari problem, switch to the HTML 5 trial:

http://www.youtube.com/html5 - option at the bottom of that page.

    Nothing for me here.

Black box. No controls, no video, no Audio. Not even the pop out box.

Latest versions of Snow Leopard, Safari & Flash. On a 2007 Macbook Core Duo 2.

    So far, I've tried:

    Disabling hardware acceleration
    Reinstalling Flash
    Reinstalling Safari
    Checking & Repairing permissions
    Reseting Safari.

But as reported. Watching video's embeeded into other sites...or via people's own channels works okay. I can't watch videos normally though.

    1) A black box, no timeline, no play button. I even tried the workaround but when I right click the blackbox nothing pops up, nothing happens.
    2) Mac OS X
    3) Safari
    4) I don't know
    5) I don't know
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Prosk8ter212 2/18/11 6:39 PM
    1) What do you see: The video plays fine, the seek bar is entirely blacked out, the seek bar only works when an ad is being shown.
    2) Windows 7
    3) Firefox 3.6.13 and Chrome
    4) Nvidia
    5)
    10.2.152.26

The "Settings" option is greyed out when I right click the video.

Things I tried that didn't work:
    Reinstalled Flash
Reinstalled Firefox 3.6.13 and Firefox Beta 4 11
    Deleted all cookies
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... thehooterman 2/18/11 7:09 PM
I found two different fixes for my Mac and both work great!!!

Fix #1.   Put Safari into 32 bit mode. Do this by closing all apps. With 'Finder' in the header of your desktop, look to the right and click on 'Go'. Scroll down and click on 'Applications'. Scroll down and highlight 'Safari', then right click. Select 'Get Info'. Under the 'General Tab', check the 'Open in 32-bit mode'. Open Safari and go to YouTube. Should be fixed.

Fix #2.   Join the HTML5 video test that YouTube is working on. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/html5

    1) Black screen with no audio
    2) Mac OSX 10.6.6
    3) Safari 5.0.3
    4)
    5) Adobe 10.2.152.26

I started having the black video screen and no audio on 2-15-11. I could navigate to a channel page and all videos would work. If you join the HTML5 test, it doesn't seem to matter if you have Safari in 32 or 64 bit mode.

AHHH! BLACK! SAFARI. MAC OS X
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... shalpin 2/18/11 9:19 PM
    1. Black box with circle timer stuck or sometimes a "play" triangle. All controls appear ok, but if they extend into the black area, they don't get cleaned up (window doesn't repaint)
    2. Windows 7 64-bit
    3. Firefox 3.6.13
    4. ATI Radeon HD 4350 driver 8.723.0.0
    5. 10.2.152.26

Can't get red of it. Shrink, expand, full screen, different 240/360/480/720: all no video (but with sound)
Happens with all youtube videos except the speed test video (http://www.youtube.com/my_speed)
Vimeo and apparently all other sites work fine.
Yt videos embedded in facebook work fine.
Other users on same computer with same firefox and flash versions work fine.
When problem started, Chrome 10.0.648.82 was working ok, but now Chrome has same symptoms.
Disabled all add-ons and extensions (except flash), cleared all history and cookies, rebooted: still happens.
    Uninstalled/reinstalled flash: no change.
Worked ok previously, but not sure what change coincided with it breaking (possibly a flash update or posting an embedded video on facebook)
Settings on flash is grayed out.

Update: settings is only grayed out on the duff videos. I went to a working video, disabled hardware acceleration and reloaded video and it worked.

If anyone knows if this is a youtube/flash/video card driver/video hardware issue, I'd like to know, since I'd rather turn it back on if it worked.

I have a Mac running all the latest, osx, safari, flash. I now randomly can't watch videos. Page loads video box remains black. Through facebook and the users actual page videos load and play fine. This needs to be addressed. We, the youtube community are getting frustrated.

    1. Black box and videos controls are no where to be found.
    2. Mac OSX 10.6.6
    3. Safari 5.0.3
    4. Flash 10.2

    3) Safari 5.0.3

I've tried the workarounds, clearing cache, cookies and history, and updated adobe. I can still watch embedded videos on other sites though, like Facebook and Blogger.

This problem suddenly started to happen right after I updated the Adobe Flash...
The workarounds didn`t work either (couldn`t turn off the graphic acceleration because the "Settings" was not accesible in the first place
And, Youtube is the only website that`s having problem after updating the flash...
I hoping for a fix some time soon.

Black screen in videos on www.youtube.com site

No black screen on www.cnn.com videos, or on www.dailymotion.com videos, and so forth...

Just happened recently on www.youtube.com, maybe in relation with the release on the latest update of Adobe Flash Player...

    1) Black box on the main video window; sounds is ok; time indications drags on the bottom bar; no problem on the pop-out window
    2) OS: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit, Home Premium
    3) Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385 fully updated through windows update
    4) Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330
    5) Adobe Flash version: 10,2,152,26
    6) Antivirus: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2011

I can confirm that disabling hardware acceleration in Adobe Flash Player Parameters works.

Surprisingly, a friend who has the very same equipement (same computer, same OS, same Antivirus) and the same Adobe Flash Player version has no problem with youtube videos.

    Kind Regards,

    4) ATI Radeon 5770HD
    5) Latest: 10.2.152.26

So I tried the little workaround, but when I right click the video, the 'settings' button is grey, I can't click it.
I've already re-installed my firefox, but that didn't work either.

Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... MRGENOUX 2/19/11 4:50 AM
    dear All,

It may help to know that the access to Adobe Flash Player settings, required to disable hardware acceleration, is not possible on the main window (grey button indeed), but is possible on the pop-up window... And the disabling solves the issue on the main window where video works again and all functionalities are back in order.

Let us hope that the issue will be solved in a more satisfaying way... without workaround or tricks !

    Kind Regards,

The problem did not exist on IE untill I decided to use the official Adobe Flash uninstaller to reinstall flash. After using it IE prompted me to install flash from adobe website and the problem started on IE also. Greetz!

When I click one of my play lists to "play all", the first video played fine; the next one started playing and I could hear the music, but the screen was black.  Used th suggestion I found under help and it worked. I have an IBM ThinkPad T60.
    1. Left clicked on player screen.
    2. Clicked Settings
    3. On my computer a box comes up that has Hardware Acceration. With a box checked:  Enabled.
    4. I uncheck Enabled.
    5. Refreshed my browser
    6. Closed Browser
    7. Restarted playlist
    8  Every video played normally

Thanks to whoever came up with this tip. It worked like a charm on my laptop.

Cannot find the "solution," re: settings, disable hardware acceleration. It's not there! So, fix this!

I don't get video or sound just a black screen.  No body is helping us safari users, and its been several days.  What gives I haven't seen a work around for us.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Marievev 2/19/11 7:59 PM
I agree with cmj05sc. Could we have newz please for safari users who have a black box with no sound and no player? It's been a long time since we had newz and we're starting to worry that nobody is really working on our case! Especially that the other post was specifically for our problem and now we got redirected to this one where there are all kinds of different problems like sound playing with no image for windows users, or other things ... The other post was for the specific safari problem. With the safari problem, we cannot disable hardware acceleration. It doesn't work and we cannot rightclick (which is ctrl click for mac users) on the black screen, it doesn't do anything. Thank you for taking our worries into consideration.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... Marievev 2/19/11 8:40 PM
Safari black box no sound no player: videos can be watched by playing them directly in the channel of the person who posted it.

Oh, and I forgot one VERY important point about the Safari black box with no sound and no player... If you go on the user's channel to watch the video in his channel, everything works fine!! Image, sound, player, everything is normal... So maybe that clue can help you Diego?

    5) Google Chrome: 10.2.154.12, Firefox10.2.152.26

When I right click a video "Settings" is grayed out but only on YouTube. I am able to disable "Hardware Acceleration" on other flash based websites, however doing so lowers the resolution to a blocky mess when viewed in HD (on every site, even ones that work), so I do not see the point. Flash 10.1 did not cause any problems for me, except I am unable to downgrade the Flash Player for Google Chrome. So until this is fixed I am going to have to use an outdated version of Flash Player on a non-Google browser. I would like to remind you that I am only encountering these issues on YouTube and no where else, so I highly doubt my hardware/software is at fault.

    Hi Diego, everyone,

    1) Video and audio both work fine, but player controls (timescroll, play, fullscreen) are missing; all that's showing is a black bar where it's supposed to be. Play and pause can be achieved by clicking on the video itself. Problem started only after updating to the latest Shockwave Flash version, and was not noticed on similar streaming video sites. This problem affected both Google Chrome and Firefox.

    2) Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    3) Google Chrome 9.0.597.98, Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13
    4) nVidia GeForce 310m
    5) Firefox: Flash 10.2.152.26

If you refer to the following closed thread, you'll see that others have also been experiencing the same problem:
    http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=1db09e230a5a8434&hl=en

Well, I had a quick browse through the posts on this thread here, and tried the "Disable hardware acceleration" option as suggested by Grantdalf and Diego above. By going to another streaming video site (eg. Dailymotion.com), right-clicking and selecting "Settings" then unchecking the "Enable hardware acceleration" box, this problem was solved. Note that for only Youtube, the "settings" option in the right-click menu is greyed-out and non-selectable.

The Youtube player controls were restored, fullscreen works and HD videos display fine. My thanks go to Diego and Grantdalf for suggesting
a solution to my particular problem.

Diego, if I might suggest, can you kindly post a short reply on the thread I mentioned above on this workaround? I believe that this will help those affected with my similar predicament.

    Many thanks once again.

    1) I see a black box. It appears to start loading then freezes. The red bar progresses and the audio works, however if you hover over the red bar all the time stamps pop up and do not disappear. Here is a print-screen of the problem http://i.imgur.com/hvJTj.jpg
    2) My OS is Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit
    3) Latest version of Chrome (9.0.597.98), but this same issue happens in Firefox and IE 9 as well.
    4) My graphics card is a Mobility Radeon HD 3650
    5) I have the latest version of Adobe flash as provided automatically in the Chrome browser. For the other browsers, I have the latest flash version (10.2.152.26) installed.

The temporary workarounds do not work. Right-clicking the player and selecting 'Settings' isn't possible because the 'Settings' menu is greyed out on every browser. No amount of restarting the browsers, reinstalling flash or java, or changing the in-browser hardware acceleration setting on or off has corrected the problem.
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... larkluster 2/20/11 8:00 AM
It seems that those of us with this:

    1. Black box and videos controls are no where to be found.
    2. Mac OSX 10.6.6
    3. Safari 5.0.3
    4. Flash 10.2

are out of luck! Nothing -- black screen, no sound, nothing! And, the fixes suggested above by helpful people don't work for us! We've heard nothing from youtube for days! Let us at least know you understand that those of us with Macs/Snow Leopard/Safari 5.0.3 are screwed? Thanks!

    4) ati-mobility-hd-5470
    5) 10.2.152.26, active X + plugin

Temporary workaround - settings box is greyed out.

Doesnt work on any browser. I also tried google chrome, which still didnt work.
Ive uninstalled, re installed, (browesers + flash)...
The red bar progresses and the audio works, however if you hover over the red bar all the time stamps pop up and do not disappear, adverts that pop up from the bottom (over the red progress bar) appear, but when you close them they stay there, and you cant click them anymore to close.

You should be able to use the "popout window" function to view the video. its the little rectangular box icon between the screen resoultion number and the bent double pointing arrow[expand button]. thats at the right bottom corner of the video screen.

Also you should be able to go to the subscribers channel and view the video from there.
This seems to be affecting only the main youtube screen.

I disagree with the quickfix of deselecting the hardware acceleration, that alot of people are suggesting, it only defeats the purpose of the Adobe player update which is supposed to give improved video playback with less demand on the system cpu. Also the software rendering produces a lower quality playback. That is why they made the improvement to Adobe player so the cpu wouldnt get so jammed up with the video demand.

Since there are the above two temporary alternatives , i will be patient and let Youtube resolve their issue without sacrificing my system performance.

hope they fix it soon but until then, the above ideas should work. It works on my computer. i have windows 7

    Workaround for Safari 5.0.3 Mac:

Change Safari to 32 bit mode.

Find Safari's icon in the finder, right-click it (or control-click it) and select 'Get Info', check the 32 bit option in the info window.

BUT, this should NOT be necessary, since everything was working fine 4 days ago without needing any workarounds.

For those of you who don't want to wait for a fix...

    Uninstall the current flash player:
    1.  Go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
    2.  Look for the uninstall_flash_player link and download it
    3.  Close all browser windows
    4.  Run the uninstaller

Install the previous version of the flash player:
    1.  Go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html
    2.  Download version 10.1.102.64
    3.  Close all browser windows
    4.  Unzip the files
    5.  In the extracted folder, open the folder "Flash Player 10.1.102.64"
    6.  Open the folder "10_1r102_64"
    7.  For windows users, the file flashplayer10_1r102_64_win.exe is the one you want.  Double-click to execute it and launch the installer

After installing version 10.1.102.64, videos should once again be working.

I have had the same problem for the past week. It seems to be something new, as i have never heard of anything like it happening before.
Embedded youtube videos work fine, the sound on the youtube website videos works fine, but the video screen remains black.
The load bar continues to load the video and all functions work as normal, so it seems like a problem limited to the video itself.

Its not flash as the videos work on other sites when embedded. and its not youtube because i have ubuntu 10.10 installed alongside windows vista in my computer and the youtube videos only have this problem when running windows vista.

Its not linked to any specific browsers because i have chrome firefox and internet explorer which have all given me the same video problems.

thanks to this, and to my brilliant mind, LOL xD... I have now fixed my problem in youtube site that I can only hear audio but there is no player as in nothing but white screen and sometimes greeny or blinking to black and white.. since I can't click the settings when I right click in the player I look in FB a posted video (or you can post a video from youtube) 'coz it only happen in youtube's site, den I right click the player then there I (you can) DISABLE Hardware Acceleration and after I restart my browser I can now see videos, yey :D
maybe on other or to everyone w/ the same problem will work what I did..

    Hey Everyone -

    Just an update:

Due to the vast amount of data from your reports, I am no longer asking for your detailed feedback on this thread anymore (unless you want to provide it of course) as we've got enough feedback for now.  Engineers will be making a few changes later this week which should ease this problem significantly.  I really appreciate all of your feedback here as its greatly enhanced our ability to figure out what's what. Anyway, I will let you all know here once you can expect to experience normal video playback again.

Once again, this post applies to you if you have been experiencing:
    1) Audio, but no video (black, white, colored box)
    2) A green line running though the player
    3) No scroll bar (or a wonky looking one)
    4) Inability to seek in the video

** Please check back later this week for an update of when this situation should be improved.

    Thanks for your patience.

    -Diego

i've been having this problem since i updated the flash player plugin. I still couldn't fix the problem in chrome. but firefox issue has been fixed by uninstalling the latest version of flash (10.2.152.26) and then re-installing an older version of flash(10.1). the older version can be found in oldapps.com. Try and see if it fixes the problem
Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... A. Nowotnik 2/22/11 11:30 AM
I'd still like to provide extra feedback.

    1) What do you see: (a black box, white box, a green line, weird colors -- please be specific)
Black box. When switching to the video tab from another tab, the place where the black box was is replaced by a cutout of part of the previously displayed tab. Flash objects are clickable and functional: double-clicking is fullscreen (only way to watch videos), the places where the pause button, fullscreen button, seek bar etc. would usually be displayed are also functional.
    2) Your Operating System (Mac OSX, Windows 7, Windows XP, etc)
    Windows 7

    3) Internet Browser and version (Safari, Chome 7, Internet Explorer 7, Opera, etc)
Chrome 10 Beta. Works fine with Firefox 4 Beta.
    4) Video Card if you know it
    ATI Radeon HD5870
    5) Adobe Flash version if you know it
    Latest. Reinstalled, did nothing.

Workaround seems to be working for now.

    2)windows 7 ultimate, 64-bit
3)chrome (latest release version) doesn't work, IE9 RC works fine.  the latest firefox works fine.
    4)ATI mobility radeon 4650
    5)whatever chrome autoupdates to.

Don't know if it's conincidental but the problem happened after I linked my Google sign in with my YouTube name -- then soon after I got the update Flash message.

I've reset Safari.  The same problem happens with Firefox -- but not on the desktop iMac or the iPod, thank goodness.  Their operating systems are current also.   ????

Re: Video not displaying (black, green, white box) but hear audio? Look here... gabbadabba 2/22/11 4:53 PM

    1) What do you see: You Tube video frame and the playback control line immediately underneath are vertically choppy... sometimes the left side of the frame is black.  YouTube videos embedded in other websites play fine.
    2) Your Operating System (Mac OSX, Windows 7, Windows XP, etc) Windows Vista
    3) Internet Browser and version (Safari, Chome 7, Internet Explorer 7, Opera, etc) Firefox, latest version
    4) Video Card if you know it
    NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
    5) Adobe Flash version if you know it - Most current, just updated yesterday

As a temporary workaround, you can try one, or both, of the following:

    1) Right click on the player > click Settings > Disable Hardware Acceleration > Refresh your Internet Browser - nope, Settings is grayed out when I right click on the player.
    2) Try closing your browser and re-load the video.- yeah, no that doesn't work either

everything has been fine with youtube for the last few months. until yesterday i can only watch videos in 360p or lower.  As soon as i switch to a higher resolution the screen freezes. BUT  the sound still plays and the movie still downloads.  and as soon as i switch back to 360p the movie starts to play normally again.. what is going on???!

i reinstalled flash with same problem.. i use google chrome and reinstalled that too.. same problem..
i tried using internet explorer and still have the same problem.
this just happened out of nowhere.

funny thing is i went to youtube.com/swf_test.html and i am NOT getting this problem.. everything works fine... only when i go to actual www.youtube.com i can only watch 360p or lower...

and videos that are embedded somewhere else with 720p i can watch fine too..

    example  : http://.bit.ly/dTNxAq

i also tried the cache and everything.. i looked up on the internet and found nothing similar.

can someone reply with some insight?   I am on windows 7. Latest flash player. Tried IE8, FF, and chrome latest versions

    Hey Everyone -

Thanks so much for all of your feedback over the past week. Our engineers have gathered all that you've told us and we're moving forward from there - we are currently working with Adobe to help resolve this issue as soon as possible. However, if you are still encountering one of the errors below, you will still need to use our workarounds for the time being.
    _____

    What you're probably experiencing:
    1) A black, white, or colored box (with or without a line through it) over the video player
    2) A wonky looking (or no) scroll bar
    3) Your video stops playing when you try and change your resolution
    _____

    Suggested Workarounds:

    For Safari users (try either):
    1) Go to http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html right-click on the player > click Settings > disable Hardware Acceleration
    2) Quit Safari > go to the Applications Folder > right-click on Safari > select Get Info > check Open in 32-bit mode option

For users with any other browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc):
    1) Right-click on the player > click Settings > disable Hardware Acceleration > refresh your Internet Browser
    2) Try closing your browser and re-load the video.
