"Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? svz4me 12/3/10 6:19 AM
Hi guys,

yesterday when I uploaded a new Video to my YouTube-Account a message came up which said:
'Congratulations! Your account is now enabled for uploads longer than 15 minutes. Click the Upload button below to select a video.'

I am a bit confused now ô.O
I'm neither YouTube-partner nor have I asked someone for this. I mean I have no problem with this but I don't really understand. I already googled etc and I found 3 other guys who recieved the same message yesterday.

I asked some other people which I know, too, but no one had the option to upload longer videos. I tested to upload a 1h file and it worked perfectly.

Maybe someone can help me to figure out what that means.

Greets to all
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Videodave2 12/3/10 6:26 AM
I don't know where that message came from, but, yes several months ago YouTube increased the time limit to 15 minutes. I have no idea why those other people think that they still have the 10 minute limit.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? svz4me 12/3/10 6:30 AM
You got me wrong.

I can upload longer videos than 15 minutes. I know that 1 hour works. Didn't test any longer stuff, yet

No one who can help me? Not even a youtube employee?

Please help me :)
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Videodave2 12/3/10 9:58 AM
Uploading longer videos is a feature granted to YouTube partners, so perhaps you should ask your question in the Partner Forum.

Hmm. I've not seen anything like this accounced anywhere.

What is your YouTube username?

Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/3/10 2:04 PM
Youtube is getting ready to roll out unlimited length video uploads to all non partners that have no abuse strikes against them and that play by the rules.  This is about time!  Been a long time coming!  They can now do this because the kinks were worked out of the technology infrastructure to be able to flag abusive channels on the fly, I think.  When you upload a video and get the notification:

'Congratulations! Your account is now enabled for uploads longer than 15 minutes. Click the Upload button below to select a video.'
This means your switch was thrown and you can now upload videos of any length and up to 20 GB in size.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Nightstar1994 12/3/10 5:54 PM
Are you serious? That's almost hard to believe. I thought it was only exclusive to partners. It's like man Youtube is just giving non-partners more and more things that Partners have.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/3/10 6:10 PM
I am serious.  The reason this is happening is because we, the youtube users that follow the rules and don't abuse the system by uploading stuff we shouldn't, have been persistent in asking for this ever since youtube implemented the 10 min thing in 2006.  The greater community is way too big to ignore on this because of the abuses of a relative few.

Where did you hear this?
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Zack.R 12/3/10 11:59 PM
@rewboss: Same here...???
I want proof, I want the source of where YouTube/Google/ETC said that.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 11:07 AM
Youtube is rolling this out in waves, you just have to wait your turn to get your "switch" thrown, only if you have no violations against you and you have been playing by the rules.  I am sure they will do a blog post about this at some point during the rollout.  Way too many people were asking about this.  By the way, I have not had my switch thrown yet, I will be patient!
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Nightstar1994 12/4/10 11:09 AM
Usually Youtube would not just roll out something like that before telling there users about it like in a news page or something.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 11:18 AM
Be patient.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Marc726 12/4/10 11:39 AM
Why don't you just answer the question, as to, where you heard it from?  Do you think you can do that?
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 11:45 AM
I cannot do that, NDA and all.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Nightstar1994 12/4/10 11:46 AM
Then I myself don't see this story adding up. It could be a glitch. Unless Youtube says this officially im not buying it sorry. Even with the screenshot and with the video actually up still unless they say something then I can't see this happening.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 11:51 AM
Why?  Youtube had done these type of upgrades before on a small scale before they actually announced it in their blogs!  This is nothing new!  Do you remember the upgrade from being able to upload 1GB to being able to upload 2GB?  That switch was thrown a couple weeks before they officially announced it on the blog.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Marc726 12/4/10 11:54 AM
@HamtramckGrace...You cannot do that?? Oh I see...yeah right...Until you have some validation to back up your statements , ain't buyin it.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Nightstar1994 12/4/10 11:57 AM
Even with the changes to there copyright system to detect things easier I cannot really see them just giving regular users more then 15 minutes because they just raised it to 15 earlier this year. It's like saying they wasted there time if they were just going to make it unlimited. If they were going to do that then they could have just kept it to 10 minutes.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 12:01 PM
OK, thats fine by me!  But when this rolls out to the rule abiding community at large I want a cup of Starbuck's finest from each and every one of you!  :-)  OK?  Deal?
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? anmoose 12/4/10 12:12 PM
NDA... Yeah right. @HamtramckGrace, if you had an affiliation with YouTube such that it required an NDA, you've already violated it badly with this "revelation." Until there is direct official word on the topic from YouTube sources themselves, anything beyond "it's another experiment the product team is playing with", is nothing but speculation.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 12:24 PM
Just to clear things up here, I am NOT bound by any NDA nor am I affiliated with Google/YouTube but the individual that informed me of this upload upgrade a few days ago IS, hence the reason I cannot reveal who he is.  That latte is smelling really good already!
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? rewboss 12/4/10 1:05 PM
If that is true, then the individual who informed you violated his NDA and you have betrayed his confidence, putting his job on the line. This is a very serious issue and not one you should be trying to exploit in order to appear clever.

That's what I'm talking about all the time :)
But my channel isn't from 2006! It new!

Great that you found that. That's almost the fourth person who got the message and all in the same time period. (last 2 days).

greets to all :)
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 1:17 PM
rewboss, I appreciate your concern, but this is already being rolled out as we speak so my contact is in no danger at all.  I am betting there are top contributors on this board that knew about this as well!  I had to wait until the first accounts started showing the ablity to upload longer before saying anything at all.  This will take about a month or so before the rollout is finished.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? anmoose 12/4/10 1:18 PM
What do the comments on that video have to do with anything, other than your further spreading of pure rumor?
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? svz4me 12/4/10 1:33 PM
@HamtramckGrace
So, you have insider-information. Could you please conclude very short what's going on and what will go on in the next weeks. (And why?) After more than 50 answeres and discussions in both threads I'm quite confused

Thank you in advance!
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? svz4me 12/4/10 1:34 PM
Does anyone get the option? And what about the sentence:

Well, maybe it's kind of a 'semi-partnership' for pointing out 'I'll give you some more options and if you go on producing videos like that you will probably become a partner'....

?
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/4/10 1:44 PM
All I know is what I have previously stated, no more than that.  If youtube/Google wanted this kept hush hush, they should NOT have started flipping switches on peoples accounts before making an official announcement!  Did they really think that no one would start talking about this once switches started flipping?  Gheez oh Pete!  This is worse than a police state!  I am not trading insider information on Wall street here!  It's just an upload upgrade the community has been clamoring for and is now finally getting!
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? svz4me 12/4/10 1:48 PM
Thanks to HamtramckGrace and all the others for helping me.The future will show what youtube will do :)
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? rewboss 12/5/10 12:48 AM
HamtramckGrace, do you understand the concept of a "field test"? This wouldn't be the first time YouTube has conducted a field test on a small number of users, only to find the new feature is too buggy/unwieldy/confusing to roll out to everyone and cancelled the whole thing. Now that you've told everybody to expect to be able to use this new feature within the next few months, you may be causing trouble for YouTube in future.

There's also the consideration that the information you received is not entirely accurate or complete, or that YouTube may change some of the details before the real roll-out, or that you have released details YouTube did not want to have released, or that Google's legal department will raise objections and delay the project for another year... you do not know any of this. I could give you several examples of situations where such things have actually happened, but that would violate my NDA.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? HamtramckGrace 12/5/10 11:26 AM
I understand rewboss, this was not my intent.  I was excited about this but I meant NO harm!  This was just a casual conversation between myself and the other individual that this was coming.  I thought this was it when we started seeing channels switches being turned on.

Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? MarkoGrishan 12/6/10 5:46 PM
Among the few?  This looks like it's for everybody, if indeed it happens, although with YouTube, don't hold your breath too long!  They have a lengthy history of introducing things like this and then pulling it out from under peoples feet 2 weeks or months later.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? homestar92 12/7/10 6:23 PM
My question is, if we were "chosen" to get this unlimited upload limit, do we keep it forever? Because I know that any pre-2006 director channels got grandfathered out of the time limit, as did all pre-time limit channels. So by having unlimited length now, do we get it forever?
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? rewboss 12/8/10 12:34 AM
homestar92, there has been no official announcement about this. Even I haven't been given a scrap of information, although I have asked for it. If I do finally get some information I can pass on, I will, but at this moment in time, I do not have the faintest idea what is happening or what YouTube is planning. All we have is a bunch of people who've suddenly discovered this new feature, and one unconfirmed and unofficial report. This thread represents the sum total of our knowledge at this point in time.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? TheChrisD 12/8/10 3:37 AM
It seems to be quite random and sporadic the people who have been given the ability to upload longer videos, however how much of that is down to the fact that you need to specifically find them yourself I have no idea.

I've been keeping a blog post updated on my site at http://wp.me/p8Oru-T1 with more examples of users who have been given this functionality. It's not all that populated so far, mainly since trying to find the ideal search terms to find them is quite tough - although searching for "Let's Play", "longer uploads" or something like that and then filtering by last week and long (~20 minutes) does help to trigger a few results.

I just wish that there would be a proper announcement about whether or not this is actually going to happen on a widespread scale, I'm sure the vast majority of the YouTube uploaders, particularly gameplay uploaders, would be very happy.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? nicoleslaw00 12/8/10 8:53 PM
I just received the same message tonight when I uploaded a video.  Just trying to figure out why I've been selected to upload longer videos and how long can they be.  Also, if I do upload a longer video... will it always be "allowed" or could they cancel this new ability and therefore "void" my long videos.

Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? TheChrisD 12/8/10 9:35 PM
Yup, the switch got flicked for me just there as well, and judging by a few people I follow o Twitter, they got it as well, so I think it was a mass, if not entire rollout.

Although this makes me wonder whether we're still limited by the old 2GB file size, or if we can play with up to 20GB as well? Because at my current quality settings, this 47-minute game video is looking to be somewhere in the region of 4.2GB...
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? rewboss 12/9/10 12:30 AM
TheChrisD: The 2GB limit is the maximum most browsers' built-in file upload element can cope with(*), and isn't necessarily a limitation imposed by YouTube. If you want to see if you can upload larger files, use the Advanced Uploader: that uses Java to get around the browser's 2GB limit.

(*) For the technically-minded: the maximum number of bytes possible is the maximum positive value that can be stored in a 32-bit signed integer, which is 2,147,483,647 -- actually one byte short of 2 GiB.

This privilege is not only extended to people with no strikes against them. I have a strike and am on some sort of probation for 3-4 more months. I got in trouble for nonsense and it should have been illegal to even penalize me in the first place, but I am currently under penalty and can't get into any trouble for a few months. This dispels the theory that this is only for the straight and narrow uploaders that follow the rules.

Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? rewboss 12/10/10 12:32 AM
JaytheRouge and DJTrembleFan: None of us have any clear idea what YouTube's policy is on this, and that's probably deliberate to discourage people from trying to game the system. My guess is that it depends on the nature of the strikes you had or have.

Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Dudley731 12/12/10 9:20 AM
Youtube hasn't really stated exactly how long the video can be now but as long as you have the feature you should just use it and not question it. lol
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? rewboss 12/12/10 10:00 AM
That's because there is no limit on the duration of the video.
Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? DarrylMichaels 12/12/10 10:39 AM
I think for a brand new channel, such as mine is (DarrylMichaels) you have to show youtube a history of clean uploads before they will unlock your account for unlimited length videos.  I have friends that have had their channels a while but have little or nothing in the way of material on their channels and they are still restricted to 15 minutes.  This is more than likely because there is not history at all there.  This is MORE than fair on youtubes part.

Re: "Congrats! You can upload longer Videos." What? Videodave2 12/12/10 11:52 AM
>how many videos do we need to post so we get that message

The number of videos is most certainly not the main criteria. The one I consider my main account only has 54 videos and has the new capability. The account has been in existence, for just over 3 years and has no copyright violations. We can speculate that there is a formula involving number of videos and length of time and good behavior, but, as others have said here, "we really don't know".

Read what others have said on this thread, the criteria is not clear, but, it may have something to do with having a YouTube history. Less than a month is pretty much no history at all.

@mainewebnews - Unfortunately reports like yours have been fairly common here, though it's wise to keep in mind we only tend to hear in this forum about the failures.  We've been escalating this issue to staff to see if some more reliable way of confirming that you still have the "gift" of longer uploads, but I'm not holding my breath for improvements, at least not before the end of the calendar year, as most site changes are on hold until staff are back to full strength after the holidays.

If you have the time, you can certainly keep trying, but there are no guarantees and so far no known way to check the status of your account with respect to 15 min+ uploads, short of some sort of "hands on" approach from staff.

I've read but have no way to confirm with certainty that some users with the "blessing" have successfully posted videos as long as 3 hours, while at least one 4 hour video was rejected.  And that's the closest thing so far I've heard regarding any undocumented limits, and it could very well be wrong.

One thing I would recommend is making sure that your format is standard enough (by YouTube standards) to ensure that the length is not multiplied due to interlacing or an unsupported audio codec.  Progressive scan videos at 30 fps or less, encoded with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio in an MP4 container seem to be among the most reliable formats.

Wish I could offer something more specific and guaranteed to be helpful, but with any new feature like this, social engineering seems to be the last and lowest priority.

That's what I meant, they could pull privileges away from certain users after a certain length of time for any reason. Besides that, it probably has to do something with movie format.

Could be.
I only have 9 movies, had 12 but deleted 3 of them (1080p) because i didn't like how i made them, after they gave me the "length upgrade".
Now i have 5 HD and 4 SD. Could this be the reason for no longer having the upgrade ?

So why isn't everyone who has an account in good standing getting this? One of my accounts is almost two years old, pretty active, a decent amount of total views, and it says I'm in "good standing", yet I didn't get this. Then I hear about dozens of people with copyright violations on their accounts or people who haven't used their accounts in years who do get it. What's the deal? Why does YouTube insist on doing random things like this, not doing it properly, and then not giving any information as to why some people are being screwed out of it? Will I ever have the ability to do this? Will it take a week? a month? a year? Of course YouTube never communicates properly with its users so the rest of us have to just sit around blindly hoping that they'll do something about it.

I continue to wait for You Tube to allow longer videos, but in the Meantime, I have been uploading my longer videos to BLIP TV which is very good and quite cooperative.      http://KRoseVideo.Blip.TV/

I've recently uploaded a video over 2 hours long. It's only Bars and Tone to keep the file size down, but the file length is there, so a positive result.
