Hello,

A number of users have recently reported videos going live with audio/video sync issues, or unavailable audio. If you have experienced this issue, please post your video URL in this thread so that I can examine the problem.

Thanks,

It seems that movies made with a Lame mp3 decoder with 32000hz audio are not converted...i just converted mine to 48000 hz and it worked

My videos had MP3 audio @ 48'000 Hz (Stereo) right before the upload...

Thanks so much! I was blaming my screen capture software, as I've found the audio becoming more and more out of sync, to the extent that the last few words get dropped off the end of the videos I have uploaded.

Hi Larry,

I am trying to publish some vids for a vlog/blog on Huffington Post. I captured the video fine from my Sony Handycam via the "record webcam" feature on my mac. The preview was great. When I published, it crashed Safari twice. The third time, it went through okay. But on all three times, the audio was ahead of the pictures. Very frustrating. Any ideas of what to do to fix.  Steven http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vZrsMY32SY

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 11/26/10 9:49 PM
If you upload directly from a webcam, audio sync is often bad; some users report that allowing the video to record without speaking for a few seconds sometimes helps. This has been a problem for about 2 years, at least.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here Umberto L 11/27/10 9:33 AM
Still no news on the issue? :-(
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 11/27/10 10:37 AM
Two problems: (1) there are multiple issues here; (2) it's a holiday weekend.  Don't expect too much feedback before next week is underway.

One of the main new issues seems to be that a fair number of uploads are coming up with missing audio.  That's probably going to be Larry's main focus, since it's something that started cropping up late the week before US Thanksgiving week.

FYI, here are some of the longstanding conditions that seem to lead to of audio sync issues in general (though, this latest issue may have other causes):

The problem is that encoding problems like this can come from multiple causes.  Here are the ones I can think of without digging back through every report I've seen here:

×  If you upload directly from a webcam, audio sync is likely to be bad, though some users report that allowing the video to record without speaking for a few seconds sometimes helps.

×  Using QuickTime Pro, some users "save" rather than "export" videos that sync the audio by reference to an audio file that is not truncated to match the video... YouTube tends to ignore the instructions to start the audio X seconds into the file, starts at the beginning instead, and the audio winds up offset accordingly.  See also, “edit lists”

×  Using any audio codec other than AAC or MP3 in your upload file gives a good chance of lost sync or other defects.

×  Even using AAC or MP3, if the audio stream is rendered at a Variable Bit Rate (VBR), that too can lead to sync issues.  Using a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) will fix that in almost all cases, unless there are other problems in the render.

×  Oddball frame rates for the video have sometimes been implicated too.  Oddball can mean anything from uploading at any frame rate besides 30 fps, to converting source video shot at one of the standard frame rates to a frame rate common for a different kind of video standard.

This is why you'll see so many MediaInfo reports posted in other threads that have asked the same or similar questions.  The cause tends to be slightly different for each person who runs into it.  There are probably 100s of ways to render video that will give YouTube encoders (and in many cases any other encoders) some fits.

By the way, MediaInfo is a free, open source utility program that is unaffiliated with Google, as far as I know.  You can probably find the author and more details about it on the Sourceforge site I recommend downloading it from:  http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here Umberto L 11/27/10 3:31 PM
Having followed Ebbixx's precious suggestions I've been able to make one of my videos work: I converted the MP3 audio track from VBR to CBR (extracting the audio track with AoA Audio Extractor and processing it with Audacity). Unfortunately, all the remaining files have been processed the same old way on YouTube. However, I remain adamant that the staff will tell us what to do, since I have faith in Google.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here stevenscottcrandell 11/27/10 3:47 PM
I had success by downloading my video from the camera to my wife's Mac on Moviemaker. Then changing the file to a Quick time file. I tried some approaches -- the "web" version was terrible quality. Finally, I tried the "expert level" which let you choose audio and video encoding. The preset at this expert level was fine. The file went from 141 mb to 40 mb and the sync was fine when uploaded. Thanks for all the words of help, Steven

@jaysongillham your videos are still processing

@rulieny You have an edit list, which is not supported.  You need to flatten the video.

Here is my video. Basically I cannot hear sound very well at all. Sound is there, but barely.
When I record, I always have my speaker sound up and I'm using logitech.
But once I add my video to Youtube, the sound is low again...

This video here,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOqVh0WEztQ

WIll not play in 480, the "common" default setting but it plays in 240, 720, 1060 settings. I can hear the audio track I embedded on all of the formats but the default one I need.

I tried to do this through youtube editor and editor is broke, so I went through audio swap with the above results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had uploaded a video in Oct. 2008 & it has since received over 200,000 hits...but JUST RECENTLY it has become out of sync.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GCz3Ei3H3k
The original time of the video is 4:54 BUT as soon as you play it the time changes to 3:55..??...& causes the audio & video to become out of sync. There are numerous other uploads of the same video from other accounts which are still ok...but just this one seems to have this particular problem.
Please advise as I don't want to have to upload it again & lose all the hits.

Thanks!

Are you using the macbook webcam? If so my upcoming solution will work. This also works with most audio sync issues. Even if you have the video ready to be posted and do not need to edit anything, upload it to iMovie and it will process and then export to the desktop, not directly to youtube. Now upload the newly created .mp4 or .m4v file to youtube. Keep in mind .m4v is really a .mp4, but basically adds copyright information (itunes being lame about copyright), all you have to do is change the suffix and it will become .mp4 and play on quicktime, but thats beside the point. FOLLOW THE EARLY INSTRUCTIONS ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING AUDIO SYNCE FROM USING MAC WEBCAMS.

Same problem here...audio starts out fine then starts to go  out of sync a few minutes in.  By the end it's at least a few seconds off.  The source file is fine and was rendered as a HD .wmv with constant bit rate audio.  I'd rather not have to re-upload...is there anything that can be done?

This one rendered from After Effects

Settings are as close to "YouTube" optimal settings, H264, 30 fps, AAC, video is constant bitrate but I can't find a way to do constant in Premiere or AE with the audio. Atleast there is no clear option like with video. The projects have same settings. So can someone on the admin side identify the difference YouTube is seeing between the two so I can fix the Premiere export?

I have successfully uploaded videos for almost 2 years, now I have a big problem.

Out of 18 vids .... only the last 1 has NO sound  have uploaded 3 different files,  2 in mpg 2 format, 1 as mp4 at 4:3, and the last one as am mp4 16:9.

although all the mpegs play just fine, once uploaded the video works but with NO sound.

Any thing you can do to enlighten me would be appreciated.

For whatever reason, my audio and video are way out of sync and my audio doesn't even play all the way through.  The video is sped up extremely fast.  I have no idea how this happens, as I'm using audio/video that is supported by you tube.  It's happened to several videos of mine, and is extremely frustrating.  Here is the link to one of them :

To MOV users in this thread (and there are many of them):

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here cdreizz 12/16/10 8:47 PM
That was helpful, however what I don't understand is some of my .MOV files work and some don't when I use the same program to record.  With these two particular files, I've uploaded them, converted the file to another format that is you tube compatible and have worked for me in the past, this example being .WMA, re-upload them and they still do the exact same thing; the video speeds up and the audio shortens. What should I do?  How do I fix this?

@elmercloud you need to flatten the video with an MOV container.  Here are some great tips from another user:

@jabce5 you are using two extremely obscure codecs, can you try something else please?  what video editor are you using?  AAC/MP3 would be good for audio.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here elmercloud 12/20/10 6:12 PM
elmercloud here: your suggestion seems to think I'm a Mac user...Actually, I'm not a Mac user... I don't know why my computer defaulted to MOV with the original video for editing.  But I shall act on your info and search my QuikTime program for "flatten" and give 'er a go.  Or I may try to make my computer "save as" to some other video format...any suggestions?  Thanks.

The video is slightly fast.  Video is 3 seconds shorter than it should be, and by the end, the audio and video are out of sync.

Uploaded a video Dec 29th with no troubles.  Recorded with Photo Booth.  Even tried uploading directly through Quicktime.  Same problem.

Thanks.

Hi,

in the last three months I tried about twenty times to load the two following videos being created using Nero Multimedia Suite 10 and I got everytime a audio/video sync issue, YouTube creating videos longer that it should be. In the past I had no problem with the other videos.

1) Le soleil de mes nuits

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ZLDmlT_Mpbk

Time 5:34 instead of 2:51

2) Que le monde est beau !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eSo9stSy2hg

Time 6:07 instead of 3:06

That the reason why I request your help and thank you in advance for a solution.

Regards from France

These are two videos I just uploaded of myself singing the alto parts for Sleep, as part of Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir.  The audio and video are perfectly synced when I play them on my laptop, but once uploaded there is a lag in the audio of about 1 beat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ5UJjskM08
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnXrbpSNCWc

I did these on my Lenovo Thinkpad x201 running Windows 7 and using the integrated camera, an external headset (for the mic) and Debut Video Capture software.  They were saved to my laptop in .wmv format before uploading.  The frame rate is set to 30 fps and it's a constant bit rate.  Here are the other settings I was able to find:

Video compressor:  Windows Media Video 9
Video bitrate:  8192
Sound compressor:  Windows Media Audio 9.2
Sound format:  32kbps, 32kHz, stereo CBR

Please - any suggestions?

Thanks very much,

calico75

My video was WMV format. MOV link isn't very helpful. I rendered my video in Sony Vegas Platinum 10. Audio was CBR. framerate was about 29.97 I believe. Any other info I can provide you with to get a more helpful answer?

Here's a link to my video again. I would really like to be able to upload to youtube instead of photobucket, but this audio issue is worse than PB compressing the crap out of my videos. Please help!

Hi Larry I'm going to repost this as I didn't get a response back...if you could help me out I'd really appreciate it...it's been a while now & I've been losing all my views because of it...thanks in advance!

There are NUMEROUS other uploads of the SAME video (which my friends & I uploaded from the same file) from other accounts which are still ok...but just this one seems to have this particular problem.
Please advise as I don't want to have to upload it again & lose all the hits.

Thanks!

Hey Robert (and this goes to all webcam users),

We have difficulty handling the ASF files that webcams generate when you upload to youtube directly rather than encoding the video with video editing software.  As a result, if you have a video editor available I would recommend that you encode your video there in one of these recommended formats:

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/21/11 4:26 AM
@gillesvonwhil - What was the frame rate for the video?  Was it more than 30 fps?  Was the video progressive scan or was it interlaced?  If interlaced, do you have the tools to deinterlace?  These are at least the most common causes for this kind of frame doubling, which makes the video stretch out to nearly twice its length... the tipoff being the seeming slowdown of the action.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gillesvonwihl 1/21/11 8:17 AM
@ebbixx - original source: VOB-file 25 fps interlaced / conversion with Nero Multimedia Suite 10 to MPEG-4-file 25 fps progressive
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/21/11 9:32 AM
I'm wondering if there was some defect in the conversion from interlaced to progressive.  You may want to share a MediaInfo report if Larry doesn't grace you with a more detailed answer after checking the back end.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/21/11 2:16 PM
A culprit could be the variable bit rate on the audio, though having that lead to this kind of doubled running time is pretty unusual.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 1/21/11 2:29 PM
The culprit(s) in the above and the Zoom Q3 and likely webcams w/sync issues is/are...

audio track length  !=  video track length
index isn't at the beginning of file

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gillesvonwihl 1/21/11 4:11 PM
what should I do ?
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 1/21/11 5:00 PM
@gillesvonwihl - I may have spoke too soon in your case... I forgot France uses SECAM.  I have no experience with transcoding SECAM video -- I've only worked with NTSC and PAL.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/21/11 6:54 PM
@gbcali - are you suggesting that the original DVD content was SECAM?  I do agree with the track length issue.  The index issue may also be at fault.  There are some free utilities you could try that will take the existing rendered video and re-order the index.  That alone might be a fix, maybe. I'm very hesitant to say that, however, since none of these issues have been strongly linked to the tendency YouTube has show towards doubling frames like this.

Gilles, you might try re-encoding with Handbrake.  I would pay particular attention to getting the audio to a constant bit rate though... that almost always seems to lead to trouble, and I suppose it's possible it might have been the trigger here.  There's much more detail in the description text for the following video, including links back to an extended discussion of utilities and the whole "link at end" problem.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 1/21/11 8:31 PM
@ebbixx - are you not familiar with France's unicorns that produce SECAM DVD's on the 6th Saturday of every month?
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/21/11 9:12 PM
Shhh... I almost have someone ready to option my screenplay about those snail-loving unicorns.  Don't tell anyone.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gillesvonwihl 1/22/11 1:35 AM
as you can read in the mediainfo the source is not in SECAM but PAL

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gillesvonwihl 1/22/11 7:20 AM

Is the video software "Video Deluxe 2008" creating the original source in a VOB-file or Nero Multimedia Suite 10 converting the VOB-file to MPEG-4-file which is writing malformed header data ?

What do you mean with 720p ("Using QuickTimePro I up-rezzed your file to 720p -- transcoded it") ?

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 1/22/11 12:49 PM
Hi, Larry, and Thanks:

Rarely, if ever, has anything made me so angry in the past decade!  I loaded videos earlier this week via the same procedure that I used to get the screwed up audio on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdXZMI_sR2Y

It is a segment of a work in progress, and not ready for publication, but I changed the access to "Unllisted" so you can examine it.

I have skimmed this entire thread up to this point, and while the people with Mac Cams are PROBABLY experiencing problems because their video is passing through the same erroneous code, I don't see anyone with precisely the same problem as I am experiencing.  I think I can add to your debugging mission, simply because my example is so straightforward that it is pretty clear at what point the loss of synchronization takes place:

The "Audio track" in my example vid is synched with the "Video track" at the beginning of the vid, but if you look at it anywhere from a few minutes before the end through the end of the vid, the sound is so terribly out of synch that it is distracting to try to follow what the people are saying.  It is worse than bad lipsynch!

The video listed above traversed the following path to arrive at its demise:

Converted from VHS tape to DVD-R via Combo DVD Recorder & VCR.  Audio is fine on DVD.

Import vid from DVD to iMovie.  Break full vid into segments in iMovie.  Audio is fine in iMovie.

Upload first segment via iMovie's built-in "Share => YouTube" drop-down menu.

Play vid on YouTube, and it SUCKS!  The "Audio track" at the beginning of the vid is synched with the "Video track".  But the Audio AT THE END of the vid is no longer in synch with the Video.  I can imagine no mechanism whereby the digital representation of the compressed video would be influence by a large "weekend load on the system!"  As my friends are wont to say, "Bits is bits."

What's going on?  How long until this is fixed?  And how long should I wait for you to(ob) fix it before I bother with the pain of Waiting waiting WAITING for it to upload again?

Thank you so much for your timely attention to this untenable BUG!!!

Hi again Larry,
Thanks for the quick response...NOW the time doesn't jump from 4:54 to 3:55 but remains @ 3:55...BUT the problem is that the ORIGINAL time is 4:54 & therefore it's STILL out of Sync...
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here David Boyle 1/24/11 9:54 AM
@SJ Gooch

I tried something on our end, so can you try something from your end as well?  Your encoding selections look good (h264/aac) but there are a few other steps you should ensure that you have taken.  One of our users put together a guide that, as far as I can tell, is always successful for MOV uploaders:

In any case, try these steps, and upload again, and let me know if this helps!
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 1/24/11 6:46 PM

This video is a duplicate of a previously uploaded video.

Sorry about that.

Lawrence,

This is what I wanted to avoid:  The pain of unnecessary uploading.  You guys don't have to say "uncle" or anything -- I've been on the other side of the fence:  If YouTube for some reason does not want to assume liability for making a mistake, it is fine.  A nod is as good as a wink to me.  I once found myself involved in a situation where, if company "A" had admitted they screwed up their design, they would be liable to recall & repair a million printers.  Although, frankly, I can't see how there could possibly be any legal liability issues involved when you are donating a free service to the community.

I'm not interested in placing blame.  I just want to get my videos up.

But the implication here is that if I choose a random "wrong" publicly-accepted video format to upload, YouTube will accept it, and then knowingly misconvert my video?  What???  I'm sure you can understand my confusion.  I have run this by my friends, and we still cannot even hypothesize a process whereby YouTube can create a video in which the audio starts out synched in the beginning, and then is shifted so that it is not.  It's like people complaining that their phone is tapped because they hear clicks:  There ain't no reverse channel there.  To insert clicks into the line would be twice as much work!  Which is why I don't want to destroy this video segment yet; it demonstrates a type of conversion issue that, so far, no one can even guess as to a possible mechanism which could create it.

Should I go through the uploaded vid with a fine-toothed comb, and try to identify which frame triggered the conversion process to either exclusively insert delay into the A or V track, or (more likely) delete a short segment of content from the Video or Audio track alone?

I named the new upload a different name than the original.  Precisely what kind of comparison does YouTube do to come to the erroneous conclusion that I have uploaded the same video?  It would be helpful to know for the future.  If it were exactly the same video, then its audio would also start out synched, and then be shifted to be out of synch.  So if YouTube does a full frame-by-frame comparison of video AND sound to determine that "this video is a duplicate of a previously-uploaded video," then you have the answer to your experiment:  The new video precisely matches the old broken one, hence the new vid is also broken.  Therefore the conversion is still failing.

On the other hand, if the comparison to determine if the newly-uploaded video is a duplicate is not so thorough, we are in a quandary.  How can I upload a new version of the video for you to check to see if what you have done has fixed the problem?

I'm perfectly willing to help.  I regard this whole YouTube phenomenon as a cooperative group effort.  But let's not waste each other's time.

In whose court lies the ball, now?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here David Boyle 1/24/11 6:54 PM
@SJGooch

You are correct that you are using a widely accepted format H264/AAC; this is necessary but not sufficient to ensure a high quality upload.  I recommend that you follow the steps to which I linked above.  Please try this and then link me the URL to the newly created video, and then I can examine the new upload and let you know if it will make it through without any A/V sync issues.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 1/24/11 7:27 PM
Lar,

It occurs to me that there is also a situation which is analogous to a "plain text" vs. "cypher text" issue regarding the "new" vs. "old" video comparison:

My understanding is that YouTube accepts a video, and then runs it through its own proprietary set of converters and compressors to arrive at a video they deem worthy of saving in their humongous video database.

Let's define some common language, so we can understand each other:  I shall call the digital content of the file containing the definition of my digital video which crosses the wire on the way INTO YouTube the "plain-text" version of my video.  The file containing the rendition of my video AFTER it has been processed (converted & compressed) by YouTube, prior to being warehoused, I shall refer to as the "cypher-text" version of my video.

The first rendition of content which I originally uploaded, and in which the audio began in synch, and then later in the vid went out of synch, I shall call "Vid_1".  The rendition of the content of the vid which I am still attempting to upload, so that you can see if what you did fixed the problem, I shall call "Vid_2."  So we now have 4 different versions of the video to talk about, right?

The question now becomes, "Which 2 videos does YouTube compare to determine that an uploaded video "is a duplicate" of a previously-uploaded video?"

Does YouTube:

1) compare the plain-text version of Vid_1 to the plain-text version of Vid_2 to determine that the videos match?  Or,

2) does YouTube compare the cypher-text version of "Vid_1" to the cypher-text version of "Vid_2" to determine that they are duplicates?

3) There are variations of cross-comparisons between plain-text and cypher-text that are such a bad idea, I am tempted to exclude the possibility, but if YouTube implemented something along those lines, it would also be nice to know.

If the former is the case, then YouTube has, somewhere in the bowels of its monstrous databases, a copy of my original video in its pristine state BEFORE it was scrozzled.  If so, you can retrieve that, and re-run conversions and compressions to your heart's content on my original triggering vid, and let me know when the problem is fixed, and I can continue to make progress uploading videos to YouTube.  On the other hand, if it is the latter case, we are kind of in trouble:  It is analogous to comparing hashed versions of passwords:  It is fine, as long as the hashing function does not introduce too many collisions and ambiguities.  These lead to false-positives.

So I have no idea how closely two videos must match to be determined by YouTube to be "duplicates", nor how dissimilar the two videos must be to be determined to be unique, and, hence, have the 2nd one be retained, rather than discarded, by YouTube.  I would like to know this, so that I may avoid wasting time uploading things which will be rejected as duplicates, even though there is clearly value to be derived by comparing the results of the two instances,  in the future.

Please advise.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/24/11 8:17 PM
@SJGooch -  I confess first that I'm not following your entire thread and logic here, mainly because it's very late and I'm very tired.

The comparison of plain and cypher-text may seem like an apt analogy and in some ways it is, though its unclear to me just what you're getting at with it.  My sense, until examples are given to show it is otherwise, is that duplicate matching is based on the original upload and has nothing to do with the almost dozen different encodings YouTube may do, especially with HD or higher res videos.

Let me say for context, though, that I personally only have the benefit of having analyzed what Google/YouTube does in transcoding based on a wide range of samples volunteered in descriptive form most of the time, by users who may or may not have always shared accurate metadata on their uploads.   I don't have direct access to the black box of YouTube's apparently ever changing transcoding practices, and those who do have ignored many, many requests to share.

Suffice it to say, though, that GooTube seems to do some fairly odd things in transcoding the videos that are uploaded, things that may have some practical justification and logic behind them, but the bottom line ends up being that even for seemingly similar formats (such as the MP4 container) the audio sync results can be quite different, depending on what specific steps one takes and which of several choices one makes in encoding the video you upload, and also what the current set of bugs happens to be.  I won't repeat myself on the several flavors of breakage that have been spotted time and time again, because those are listed in the long reply that Larry marked as best answer at the top of this thread.

It would be more constructive, rather than try to deduce what that black box is doing right now, that you choose to share either specific metadata or make at least a shortened render using the process Larry suggested, to see whether that solves the sync problem.

As far as I can tell, to what I take it is your main question about how closely things must match to be rejected, the best sense anyone has so far found is that as long as the checksums don't match, even a slight change in rendering should make a newly rendered video "different" from previous uploads and therefore it ought not be rejected.  If it is, this would be a fairly new bug that needs to be confirmed ASAP.  Forgive me if I didn't follow everything in a very long set of responses.

At least the assumption and experience has matched this up until now.  But with changes on YouTube there's always the possibility of a new and interesting bug to contradict all past reports.

I don't mean to dismiss the abstractions, but at least over the past 2 years, YouTube just has never shared enough technical detail for such a discussion to bear much fruit.  Though you're welcome to try.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 1/24/11 8:23 PM
PS: One of the stranger things GooTube does is to transcode virtually all new uploads with a variable frame rate, while most videos other than a few cheaper cameras and smart phones tend to stick rigorously to a handful of fixed/constant frame rates that are byproducts of film and TV video history.

Not saying this is the cause of the sync issues in your case, but it is one of several factors that I strongly suspect are behind the reason that some videos that play perfectly fine on your local machine will wind up messed up in the YouTube transcodes.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 1/24/11 10:31 PM
@SJGooch - From the start of your video until approx 4:03 the left & right vertical edges are soft and you can see head-switch glitching at the bottom -- the A & V are in sync.  But at 4:04 during a cut-away shot of a photo, the picture enlarges slightly and the left & right edges become sharp and the head-switch glitching at the bottom disappears (like it was zoomed + cropped) -- when the guest on the show starts talking at 4:21 the A & V are out of sync.

"But the implication here is that if I choose a random "wrong" publicly-accepted video format to upload, YouTube will accept it, and then knowingly misconvert my video?"

Yes, YouTube does that in certain cases.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 1/24/11 11:21 PM
Thank you so much, guys & gals.  It may not seem like much, because I haven't managed to get my show successfully uploaded yet, but I have learned an awfully lot from you.  A lot of this is that I am new enough to YouTube that I am still in my "context generation" phase.

I'm not being obtuse.  I'm just naive, or perhaps even stupid.  And part of my poor communication is due to my expecting that Google would be able to reproduce its own error messages in its HELP blog.  My other naiveté is that I believe that I was speaking to people who didn't have YouTube signons, but were somehow working inside YouTube.

Am I to understand that you guys are in the same boat that I am.  That this "Help blog" is unattended?  That no one from YouTube ever actually answers a question; they just leave it to the goodwill of the community to help each other figure out, and share, workarounds for their shortcomings?  Maybe this is obvious to some people, but the truth is I am still not sure who here works for YouTube, and who does not....

I see from some of the answers that people did not understand that the beginning of my 2nd post was a copy of an error message from YouTube informing me that they rejected my video, because they thought they already had it.  If ebixx's hash-code/checksum assumption is correct, then it should be easy to toss out a couple of frames at the beginning or end, and upload a new version which is substantially the same as the original.

However, I would like to say that I doubt that YouTube is doing comparisons of the original pre-transcoded versions of the videos they receive.  My guess (and, of course, it is only that) is that one of the fundamental drivers of YouTube's motivation to do their own transcoding is an effort to conserve storage.  As such, they would want to compress the hell out of a video to produce the "cypher-text" version, and discard the larger (and unplayable) "plain-text" version ASAP.  If I were planning the architecture, I would do it this way.  And I would then end up comparing the "cypher-text" versions.

ButI have wasted some of our time.  I now understand the wisdom of ebixx's response:  All YouTube needs to keep around is the result of the hash code of the "plain-text" version.  They can still discard the original uploaded video, and simply keep the hash codes around -- in the metadata of each video's file, and, no doubt, also in a list they search for duplicates after every upload.  See?  Thanks.  I'm learning...

And, gbcali, GOOD WORK!!!  What you did was actually at the top of my list, but I hadn't gotten to it yet.  So THERE IS A TRIGGERING EVENT CONTAINED WITHIN MY VIDEO.  This is an example of "in-band" signaling, although it is not a desirable one:  My video has apparently "signaled" the transcoder to "go off the deep end."

I apologize for the poor quality of the edges of my video.  It was the best I could afford in 1990.  I'm not quite sure what the implications of "soft edges" of the NTSC frame are, yet, but apparently there are some bad ones, or we wouldln't all be here hassling with this.  Perhaps I can just cut out the "image bloom" at 4:04 or 4:21, and maybe the transcoder won't be "triggered".  The part I don't yet understand about your observation is that I don't believe this video was processed in any way after it was originally committed to 3/4" U-matic tape c1990.  So I am at a loss how this event could have either survived the trip from U-matic master to SVHS to VHS to DVD-R to iMovie to YouTube, or at what step along the way it could have been accidentally created.  But thanks so much for isolating what is apparently the triggering event!

I will now attempt to upload another copy which will produce a different hash code.  I will make a slight change to the END of the segment.  That way all the machinations of YouTube's transcoder's state machine should be precisely the same leading up to the triggering event, and the transcoder's response will tell us if they have, indeed, fixed the problem or not.

Thanks again to you all -- especially if you're not being paid by YouTube for your expert counsel!!!

I just wanted to get back to everyone who helped, and let you know that whatever ytLarry did must have fixed the problem.  With no changes other than to shave a few seconds off the end of the vid to prevent its being rejected as a duplicate, it uploaded, apparently perfectly, this time.

Thanks so much to ytLarry, ebbixx, and gbcali for the help!!!  I couldn't have done it without you.

It might be difficult to fix because we have poor support for mpegps with our new format standards.  I can try it again with an older standard, but it's current form is likely the best we can do.

Hi Larry,

I uploaded two more mpeg4s today, same issue as I had before: Video doubles in length when uploaded to Youtube, audio stays the same; I get an out-of-sync video.

Please respond...I read your responses and none addressed this issue.

Last time, the only thing that fixed the issue was re-exporting the video, I didnt do anything differently.

Any way to identify the tech issue here? Any suggestions?

Here are the two new ones:

I have found that when uploading a video at 29.97 fps, the audio goes out of sync after a while. But when uploading a video with an exact 30 fps, there are no problems. So I experimented. I uploaded a video that's 29.97 fps, waited for it to process, downloaded that same video using a YouTube downloader app and checked the frame rate in QuickTime X. The frame rate was slightly off. 29.99. It seems that YouTube has trouble processing a 29.97 frame rate, which will cause audio sync issues if not converted properly. Anyone else get this?

Today I uploaded a video recorded as screen capture from Quicktime, NO audio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23aJ1JR3v3Y

The video I uploaded before this one, same settings, works fine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI2KWj2Olog

Can somebody at YouTube please inspect the first video and find out the reason why it's lost the audio track? As it stands right now I am always uploading for like an hour to find out whether or not I will have audio. Then the only solution I know is to reencode the video with iMovie. This is quite annoying as you might imagine.

kind regards
Oliver

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 1/29/11 7:13 PM
@ilmolto - YT usually encodes videos with a variable frame rate.  QuickTime X's "Inspector" window only shows a single frame rate for variable frame rate videos.  I believe QuickTime X displays the 1st frame rate encountered -- it doesn't display the various frame rates in a variable frame rate video nor is the value displayed an average of the entire clip.  In my own experience I haven't had problems with 29.97 videos getting out of sync with the audio, but most of my uploads are relatively short (4 minutes or less).

@drops - QuickTime X's screen recorder creates videos at non-standard, variable frame rates, and audio tracks of a different length than the video track.  Any 1 of those 3 properties can create problems for YT's encoders.  Your best bet would be to always re-encode screen captures with iMovie before uploading to YT (that's what I do).
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 1/30/11 2:15 AM
ilmolto:  When I had the problem where my vid went out of synch 4+ minutes in, it was with with a vid at 29.97 fps.

Having worked at Sarnoff Labs with the guys who did it, I can tell you that the frame rate for virtually all broadcast NTSC TV is 29.97.  The rate for NTSC was originally 30 fps for B&W TV, but they added something into the vertical blanking signal when they began broadcasting color.  I believe the details are these:  In order to "balance" the format, they employed a trick which is used elsewhere in the signal: They inverted the phase from usage to the next.  If I'm not mistaken (and it's been a few years!), the color subcarrier is inverted for each field (half-frame).  Because the subcolor frequency had already been established, this was accomplished by "adding" an extra half-cycle onto the end of each field.  The (analog!) dynamic ranges of the phase-lock loops which were used to effect clock recovery to establish horizontal and vertical synch were forgiving enough that this did not affect reception.  But the period of a frame increased slightly, yielding the new 29.97 frame rate.

Since virtually all extant NTSC video has been recorded at 29.97 fps, it would seems that if YouTube is going to favor one frame rate over another, they should focus their resources on supporting 29.97 over 30 fps.

I think this is also covered in Dr. Brown's excellent book, "And a Part of Which I Was," which details the development of color television, told in the first person by the man who did it.  If you're interested in video, it's a fun read, and I can't recommend it more highly.

Now, a question for you, imolto:  you mention "using a YouTube downloader app" to recapture your uploaded video.  What is a "YouTube downloader app", and where can I get one???  (Thanks.)

What YouTube should do and what it actually does aren't necessarily similar.  I'll revise that statement if someone can explain to me a quality-oriented technical justification for their use of variable frame rates.

You have another one of the troublesome ASF/WMV webcam videos.  Can you please convert your video in some video editing program (rather than uploading directly via the webcam) and follow some of the steps outlined here:

@GMT3010 the simplest option for you would be to convert out of MPEGPS into any of the alternative formats suggested at the link above.

The Mac-related link Larry posted was aimed at KyleQ.  All Larry was suggesting to you specifically was that your video appeared to have been rendered in MPEG-PS, which apparently is not very reliable at this point.  What format is best for re-rendering depends at least in part on what tools you have.  WMV might be your best choice if you only use Win MovieMaker.  If you are comfortable using Handbrake, MP4 may be a better choice.  Probably best to test any options you have and select the one that remains most stable.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here David Boyle 2/1/11 7:03 AM
Actually GMT, the thread above to which I was referring doesn't have any specific information directed towards mac users:

@ebbixx for the record mpegps is still supported, but I would not personally recommend it at this point.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 2/1/11 7:13 AM
I think we have different definitions of "supported" -- in the strictest sense, a lot of formats are "supported" if that merely means that they will almost always convert to a video and an audio stream.  I do wonder, as long as we're speculating, how many of the MPEG-PS files that don't convert well might have come from VOB files that were copy-protected?

Sorry about the assumption that link was Mac-specific... I expect I confused it with one of the many other answers, or maybe GMT checked one of the Mac-related links that appears in this grab bag of a thread, which has examples of at least a good fraction of the many formats or subvariants of formats than YouTube is not converting predictably.

Confidential to GBcali:

If you recall, a few days ago you discovered some oddity in the edges my video. I just discovered the cause for at least part of the jagged edges:  The video synthesizer that we built to generate the rotating logo at the beginning and end of the show has a special feature:  We built in an option to implant a copyright message in Morse code in the video.  It uses a single-pixel-wide column in the video overscan down the left edge of the screen.  It is visible at the beginning of the vid.

I had completely forgotten about this.  Haha on myself!

Can anyone read it?

what would you personally recommend? I can see what youtube now thinks are the best formats. I used to upload and because I did not have a huge file, everything came out looking pretty good. Now they have changed? I also see videos can go longer.

Natalia,

Take a deep breath.  Everything is going to be OK.

When I play the first video in your list, I can hear it, so your vids are OK.  Something is apparently broken somewhere other than in the vid files saved in your YouTube account.  Knowing that, you should be able to relax.  Whatever the problem is, it can be discovered and corrected in due time, and you have lost nothing.

Unfortunately, with what you have told us, I am somewhat puzzled as to where the problem might be.

I broke my head with it, no sound yet.  I hope I discribed my problem well : No sound on YouTube page itself, not only my chanal. Even commercials (advertizing)))))  without it )))))))) Thank you so much! I am not along with it now, feeling much better. Thank you.

MPEGTS container and AC3 audio are not recommended.  What conversion/editing software have you got available?  You will have to convert to an alternate format.

Thank you for your help.  I used PMB to export my videos from camera to my loptop, then I used YouTube editing page.

But now I have very important question:  WHY  YouTube itself  -  THE MAIN PAGE -  also have no sound.  NO SOUND  on any videos, commercials,  etc.  I cannot watch any videos of another people,  all my YouTube dead  (NO SOUND) .

Somebody,  help me understand WHAT HAPPEND?  Thanks.

Btw before your modification the video worked fine on cell phones, but now that's gone out of sync too - cuz you shortened the length to 3:55 instead of making it 4:54 which is the ACTUAL length.

Finally I GOT  THE  SOUND on my YouTube back!!!

I used this advice:

Marc726 :  "Check to see if the player is muted. If it is, you'll see a red "x" to right of the speaker icon in the player controls. If it's muted, click on the speaker icon and hold and drag the slider to increase the volume. If it doesn't work the first time, keep repeating the process. Keep clicking on the speaker then drag the slider repeatedly until it unlocks the mute. Eventually, and hopefully, that works."

Hope the advice will help the other people with the same problem.

Thank You  --- Marc726 --- !!!

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here David Boyle 2/10/11 2:08 PM
@TeamTaylorLautz

Make sure you have only 1 audio and only 1 video track of equal length, and pay attention to these two steps:

Video Track (required)  - must contain 1 and only 1 Video Track
  - do not use "Frame Reordering"
  - H.264 encoded
  - 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30 are acceptable Frame Rates

Sound Track
 (optional)
  - may contain 1 and only 1 Sound Track
  - Sound Track [if present] must be of equal length as Video Track
  - AAC encoded

My data is showing that the tracks are not congruent:
audio_start_timestamp: 0
audio_end_timestamp: 198378
video_start_timestamp: 0
video_end_timestamp: 198365

@ytLarry How would I make the tracks congruent??

Hey,

You are using iMovie, correct?  Can ensure that you only have 1 sound track and 1 video track of equal length, as mentioned above?  I actually wouldn't be surprised if this is out of sync in the source, although I haven't downloaded it yet to check.

This film was playing properly yesterday when it was first uploaded (20 Feb), but now stutters repeatedly when starting - it seems to be drop 12 frames at once - and then the audio runs out of sync.

It was encoded using Final Cut Pro at 1080i using H.264/MPEG-4 for the video and AAC for the audio.

Hello is  ytlarry still around?

There have been so many posts since I posted my request for help there are pages and pages to go through, and all I want to do is find mine.

I don't use my editing software as often as I should to get real good at it, all I know is whatever settings I had worked very well no matter what video I uploaded.
mpeg or I think you said avi was better? That is what I am trying to find.

Please can anyone direct me to that? I can render the video into any format to upload, just about. The last upload I did came out real well and I did as YT larry suggested, which was about five pages ago.

Also, I'm real sick of one of those so-called "top contributors" making these cowardly insinuations never coming out and accusing and this is the last strawq, I'm reporing you to youtube.
It's the poster with the icons or birds eyes whatever the heck he thinks he's supposed to be.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here GMT3010 2/21/11 12:59 PM
I found you ebbixx.  Oh so you succumbed to the temptation of having a youtube channel. I hope you get all you so richly deserve. We who have posted for help as long as two years ago have been the targets of your cowardly comments & your insinuations. You haven't the guts to just make your unsupported accusations. What do you do besides just post post post? You never offer help. Never. There is NOT ONE of your posts that actually assist someone you just use it to take your cheap shots no matter how you try to couch them. Obsessive little man.

You post with malintent, never to help people, never to do something with goodwill or sincere spirit of a kind nature or to be a positive force in youtube or anywhere people post for help.  You are jealous and insecure and it shows in your cowardly comments. The remark here no matter how you couch it was the last straw and I reported you to youtube. You were told to keep to yourself. You also want to sell online but truth is, you don't know how so you want to sabotage others.  Now I see you started a channel. My my. I question the wisdom of someone like you putting yourself out there after having caused so much harm and grief to others. With malintent and cowardice, no matter how you try to couch it. I see you channel. Now see how it feels. You are a bad cliche. I reported you to youtube.  They told you to knock it off. You think you can use your sarcasm and rudeness but when someone stands up to you wow you show your soft underbelly. Youtube told you to mind your business. That was wise advice.

FWIW, GMT3010, my main channel predates my activity on the help forums by almost 2 years.  Frankly, I agree with your interpretation on at least one count, that it's often been a much bigger waste of my time than it's been worth.  Your response more or less seals it.

I became active here around the time HD was introduced, and my main interest was in sorting out the rendering bugs and trying to figure out best practices in the face of fairly sketchy transparency (for reasons I refuse to speculate on... in the end the reasons don't really matter).  At that time, when 16:9 aspect ratio was added, I found that most of my videos were "double boxed" and I wanted to understand as much as possible what YouTube was doing so I could avoid getting sideswiped again.

I'm sorry if you thought my question about MPEG-PS was somehow inappropriate.  As with so many things, we'll probably never find out the full story of why some formats are not well-supported.  Good luck.  No hard feelings.  I certainly need to be using my time more wisely.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 2/21/11 4:19 PM
Personally, I found ebbixx's pithy and direct response very helpful.  As a newbie, I couldn't comprehend the "wild-west", "anything goes", and "try anything" situation dictated by attempting to quickly develop the first facility capable of supporting and distributing the massive volume of vids YouTube is trying to support.  Ebbixx's timely response woke me from my reverie.

Everyone has a different style.  I believe Ebbixx's frustration comes through in his posts.  That is an important and informative context supporting the information he selflessly chose to share.  I hope the peanut gallery hasn't silenced yet another honest, and, to me anyway, helpful voice.

Wow you must have gone to college for that. Stay in your reverie. Don't go where you are not up to it. Ebbixx "top contributor" doesn't mean you have contributed.

I would like to extend a special thanks to gbcali and ytLarry for all their valuable help.  I am trying hard to comply with the advice given as to how to upload vids in a format which is most compatible with YouTube's current crop of transcoders.  As a newbie, it is somewhat difficult for me to understand exactly what I am being told. In part this is because I just don't yet know all of the technical possibilities. When you don't know what is "hardwired" versus what is the default versus what selections must be made, it can be difficult to navigate the proper path.  In part I also find it somewhat difficult because the menus in my version of iMovie '11 are apparently quite different from those upon which gbcali based her informative tutorial.

It has been said that one of the best ways to communicate effectively is to repeat back what you think you are being told.  Toward that end, I am going to ask:

"Does the following procedure encompass all the advice I have been given?"

In MPEG_Streamclip:

Have I left out any important choices?  Have I misunderstood anything?  Is there anything contained herein which would be more likely to produce a quality YouTube vid were I to change it?

Thank you so much for your attention.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 2/22/11 4:01 AM
@SJGooch - That looks pretty good to me, as long as the original was in a 4:3 ratio.  The real test is whether it works reliably once you've uploaded.  Since you're using some automatic settings, I don't have a clear sense of the specific bit rate for the video and a few other elements, but the sense from what you're sharing is that the quality should be fairly high.  Hoping gbcali will spot any traps I might have overlooked.

I'm assuming the original content was anamorphic NTSC DV video at 720x480, with a pixel aspect ratio of 0.9091.  Is that assumption correct?
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 2/22/11 5:07 AM
Oh, no, ebbbixxx!  I grow old, I grow old; I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled!  The originals are on a variety of types of analog NTSC videotapes!  For those unfamiliar, videotape was a primitive analog magnetic & mechanical-based persistence technology which came into use shortly after cave-painting.  The pixel aspect ratio in analog TV is variable.  It depends upon temperature & humidity, and the positions of the horizontal and vertical gain pots.  Oh, whatever shall I do???
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 2/22/11 6:46 AM
Forgive me the unwarranted assumption.  By "original" I was referring to the .VOB source video mentioned at the head of your description.  I take it that was a DVD transfer of the true original NTSC videotapes?  Let me correct myself by asking was the DVD version produced in the display aspect ratio and PAR I asked about?  I'm going to guess that it was if the true original was NTSC videotape.

More to the point, though, after uploading the results, are you spotting some particular problems?  If so, could you share the URLs so someone might be able to offer possible solutions?

From your description I'm not expecting problems, but the description is not explicit enough for me to spot some things, like the common problems that sometimes appear when trying to convert anamorphic video, which NTSC DV typically is , whether the aspect ratio is 4:3 or 16:9.  Usually, correcting that will involve some adjustments, usually in the editing program.  But QuickTime Pro may also provide a workflow that can compensate... since I generally use other tools, and deal less and less with NTSC DV source video, I should leave it to gbcali and others who use it more than I do to offer more clear advice.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 2/22/11 6:44 PM
Ebbbbixxxx,

Thanks so much for perusing my post to see if all the settings I am using make sense.

I'm sorry about the NTSC pixel aspect ratio confusion.  It was an attempt at levity.  My thinking was only that with the unstable analog circuitry supporting the original NTSC and RS-170, anything goes, and so an aspect ratio of 0.9091 is just about as likely as any other!

Originally there was no NTSC pixel.  The format consisted only of 488 viewable out of 525 total continuous interlaced intensity-modulated scan-lines.  With the advent of affordable RAM, arbitrary choices to chop the scan-line into pixels were made.  The one that "stuck" originally was 320 x 240.  It was attractive for 2 reasons:  It created a square pixel, and, due to the prime factorizations of the constituents containing large integer powers of 2, it meshed fairly well with addressing and utilization of the early RAM chips employed as the first videoRAMs.  As memory prices came down, multiples of 320 x 240 were subsequently adopted.

Hence, my NTSC pixels were born square, and I intend for them to be displayed in a 1:1 aspect ratio.

I am totally ignorant regarding DV formats.  I think you are telling me something about imperfect or mis-matched conversions dictating a rectangular pixel.  Hopefully the rectangular pixel format to which you allude is only an interim format which exists only as a single stepping-stone along the multi-step path of conversion processes.  My final vids appear to be delivered, as they should be, in a 4:3 aspect ratio.  So "all's well that ends well," I guess.  Still, it pains me to think of my poor pixels suffering a slow, noisy, death through unnecessary over-interpolation.

You ask for a URL:  It is no secret!:  Virtually everything in my channel has travelled increasingly better approximations to the path detailed in my prior post.  My channel is called "CyberneticArts", and the program I am attempting to bring to YouTube is "High Tech Heroes":

You further inquire as to what uploading-related problem I am currently experiencing:  None – that I know of.  But to develop my process to the point where I am now, I had to go through at least 2 iterations of ytLarry telling me, ~"Do it the way I said," when I thought that I already was.  There is so much state-information required to specify the precise formats, conversions, hardware, and hardware configurations that it is difficult for a newbie like me to comprehend the size of the problem, let alone the details of the solution.  Every time I think I have fully specified what it is I want done to my vids, I discover yet another "hidden" page or field of state-information.  My post is only an attempt to bring all of that state-information "out in the open", and verify that I finally really have a handle on it.  And to help other people avoid the time I wasted discovering it all.

Nothing is more counter-intuitive than having a built-in "Share with YouTube" facility in iMovie, and then eventually realizing that ytLarry is really saying, "Don't use it.  Export your vid through QuickTime."  My long post is, among other things, an attempt to ask if that is correct:  Is it really recommended that we export ("Share") our vids through QuickTime, and (for the time-being, anyway) AVOID Apple's iMovie's built-in Upload-to-YouTube feature???

My BIG PROBLEM at the moment is that my copy of iMovie '11 "steps on" 52 milliseconds of audio at the beginning of every clip it imports, and I can't get it to stop doing it:

Or read the "Description:" fields in these test vids:

{ BTW, I would like to apologize for the extraneous white-space in my prior post; I only have a limited amount of patience for incompatible TEXT formats.  I mean, c'mon:  ASCII is ASCII.  A space is a space.  And a CR is a CR.  SPACE is the most commonly used character in the English language for a reason:  There is a lot of contextual information which is often communicated effectively via the spacing of text.  I find it annoying that this blog REMOVES my carefully expressive spaces.  But I find it even more incredible that the same blog that 'removes intentional horizontal white-space'   'inserts unwanted vertical white-space'.  I wouldn't mention it, but I know of no way to preview material here, and so the only way to WYSIWYG is to post.  And even though you can remove a "preview" post, each post triggers irretrievable e-mail to all who subscribe to the thread.  Anyway, I apologize for the extraneous white-space in my post, but, believe me, it was totally unintended. }

And just so everything is in the open:  Mine was no idle compliment:  Ebbbbbixxxxx, one of your previous posts really did "awaken" me.  When I came freshly into this BBS, errr... blog, errr... forum, it was completely inconceivable to me that YouTube would not have procedures in place to perfectly transcode and digest all well-defined video formats.  Certainly I could not conceive that they would sometimes be unable to properly handle some of their advertised formats!  And, even if so, once discovered, I assumed they would immediately rectify the situation.  Your initial reply to my first post was that, indeed, in some cases YouTube knowingly mishandles some popular formats.  YouTube has been around for years.  I (naturally, I think) assumed that the formats they accept would have been nailed-down and stabilized in the early days.  Your reply woke me up to the true nature of this medium:  Even though we are years into its development, this still IS the early days.  If you hadn't said that in some cases YouTube "does exactly that" (knowingly mis-converts some accepted video formats), I would have continued on with my unreasonable expectations and exponentially-growing frustration.  As it is, I was able to re-adjust my expectations, and avoid quitting this endeavor due to frustration stemming from unreasonable expectations.  I regard your timely but pithy reply to my first post as courageous; it certainly wasn't going to make you any friends at YT!  Yet it was honest and true.

When I realized the "youth" of the YouTube development, and that they really were just prioritizing which video formats to concentrate on and which bugs to fix in an effort to schedule thinly-stretched developmental resources, it was easy for me to accept.  I have lived most of my life in the shadow of developing systems, so it seems natural to me to have to find work-arounds for temporarily-broken facilities.  It was just that I didn't expect it from a YouTube that I had mistakenly concluded, due to its vast world-wide popularity and acceptance, was more-or-less a stable technology.  It ain't!:  If you don't like today's transcoder, just wait for tomorrow's!

So what do you say, @GBcali?  Is my process reasonably correct?  Does it avoid all the pitfalls you have warned us about?  Is it consuming extra time, effort, or resources that it need not?

Thanks again to everyone here for their help!

@ytLarry...
what happened with my video & what do u suggest I do???
I DON'T want to have to upload again & lose all my views...
before your modification the video worked fine on cell phones, but now that's gone out of sync too - cuz you shortened the length to 3:55 instead of making it 4:54 which is the ACTUAL length.

PLEASE respond back so AT LEAST I know what to do!...this is really frustrating!

Thanks in advance.

@SJGooch - I'm still trying to digest all that detail.  Looking at your videos, and considering the original source and it's challenges it seem the result is fairly accurate and all we can generally expect from YouTube.  Thanks also for confirming that my contributions are not totally pointless.

To be fair to YouTube, I think your comments on the details of the original video point out the challenge YouTube faces in handling so much video, from so many sources and often conflicting formats.  While they make an amazing effort to convert a very wide range of formats, I suspect that sometimes is where the compatibility problems are also coming from.  Shoot down one bug and two more will sometimes appear, quite possibly due to a logic trap or glitch introduced by trying to solve the last problem.  Also, new standards keep emerging, and some of those tend to conflict with some of the more established ones.  I suggest exploring the Wikipedia and other sources of information on the codecs and containers that are available to you... it can be more than overwhelming, and I'm not sure there's anyone who fully understands it all, or even fully understands every aspect of the handful of containers and codecs they use.  One of my reasons for being so prolific here, in fact, has been to educate myself on topics that no formal school seems to be prepared to teach in a practical sense.

You can't make everybody happy, though, and, since most users are expecting Larry to respond in this thread, not me, I think I'll be avoiding this thread at least for the foreseeable future, even though Larry did select my general overview of common audio sync triggers as best answer some time ago.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 2/24/11 8:46 AM
@SJGooch....

#1)  Rectangular vs Square Pixels:  "my NTSC pixels were born square, and I intend for them to be displayed in a 1:1 aspect ratio"

NTSC 4:3 DVD-Video (your source) is encoded using 720×480 or 704×480 pixels -- you may intend for your pixels to be square, but they aren't square on the DVDs you're using as your source.

#2)  iMovie's "Share with YouTube":  There are many people that successfully upload their videos via this method and those people should feel free to continue to use it.  Unfortunately when things go wrong using this option there's very little that can be done to trouble shoot where the problem is.  If a person has trouble uploading a video with iMovie's "share to YouTube" feature... who's to say it's YouTube's fault -- you seem to have discovered a possible bug in the new version of iMovie stepping on the 1st 52 milliseconds of audio at beginning of each clip -- obviously iMovie isn't perfect.  I'm a big fan of Apple and just bought an 8-core Mac Pro last month and hate to say this... but Apple's new video software (especially QuickTime) has more than a few bugs in it.  If a user hasn't actually seen what's being uploaded to YouTube how do they even know their video plays back the way they intended it to?  And if a user doesn't have a copy of the video on their computer there is nothing for anyone to examine to try to figure out what went wrong.

#3)  Your workflow (as outlined above):  I see no problems with it -- just make sure "frame-reordering" is always unchecked after selecting "H.264" video encoding.  Although there is nothing problematic with encoding audio at 48KHz, I prefer to encode at 44.1KHz rather than have YouTube's encoders do the sample-rate conversion from 48 to 44.1.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 2/24/11 2:28 PM
GBcali,

Thanks so much for taking the time to wade through and critique my "workflow."

Especially thank you for letting us know that YouTube's internal audio encoding rate matches the default CD rate of 44.1 Ksamples/sec.  As I alluded to before, I hate to see my data suffer slow entropic deaths via unnecessary interpolation.

 Hi
I don't know if this helps, but I too have uploaded videos that played fine, then get one that is out of synch. But when I re-rendered it into another format, it works. Some files also might have gotten mucked up in the process of importing them, though the rest of the files seem fine. Maybe that's not the best technical explanation, but if all others are playing, it's something with that one file.

Again the three times that's happened to me, everytime I re-rendered it into a different format took care of it. I usually do the mpeg-3 or 4 sometimes avi but those are big but I don't upload long videos.

 I hope this helps,
 gmt

Hi
I don't know if this will help avallon and I haven't seen ddevotion1 video, but this has happened to me on rare occasions, always when it is in a format youtube doesn't like.

What I end up having to do is re-render (convert) it again and I use either mpg2 (it is one of my choices on my software) or avi. I don't know why an HQ video would make a difference, it is the format, but again, this is a case of the blind leading the ... you know. I just know that in the cases where the video doesn't match the audio, I have to re-render, make it a smaller file.

The only other thing I can think of is your codec for the sound, but i doubt that. If you can hear it on your computer it ought to have a codec acceptable to youtube. Just try re-rendering (converting) twice, as much as a pain that is. Using mpg3 or 4.

Good luck. I hope someone comes along who knows a lot more about this than I.

I have an audio problem.  What sounds like noise at the beginning, I believe, is actually the video going by at light-speed.

http://www.youtube.com/user/gastbury?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/OPwja16cdbE

This video was encoded using Nero Vision 10  MP4 with MP3 audio.  The files play just fine before I uploaded them.

This is a bit frustrating.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here GMT3010 3/23/11 5:57 PM
 Hi
YK I saw and it sounds like audio is flashing by.  When I have out of synch problems, I try re-rendering it (converting it) one more time. In other words, after you have created your youtube upload video, re-convert it into one of their preferred formats. I just use mp3 because it is what is on my software sometimes I do use AVI though I first admit, I am no expert at this.

I hope someone who knows a lot comes along and helps. But this has helped me, though my out of synch is not so severe, just hearing the words before the lips speak it. Anyway, I think it is all the same thing. There is a link someone has put somewhere on this post of the preferred formats youtube says will work best. Mine also did the same: played fine before I uploaded, so I figure something happens during the upload. I don't know why re-rendering (converting) one more time helped in my case but it did.

 good luck,
 gina

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here GMT3010 4/2/11 6:21 PM
 Hello redwa
I tried to view your video but when I copied and pasted the link did not work. These links do not come out as links.
Anyway, I can only offer what has worked for me. You must be using some kind of software which would convert the video into a format youtube uses. There is a link on this help pages --  you can go  back several pages and find it -- that someone put up that shows which are the best formats. I use mpg3, Avi files are too big.

I'm not sophisticated enough to know detailed info on codecs but you need to have the codec that works for your software. All I am able to do is find the one for my software.

I usually upload with no synch issues. But when there are some, I fix it by re-rendering, or re-converting a second time. I don't know why that has helped my video/audio synch issues but it does. I hope someone with a lot more smarts comes along and helps. Sometime youtube employees will read over these.

Did your video play fine before you uploaded it? Mine always did. So I just put the converted video thorugh a second conversion, which my software calls rendering. Maybe if you try that, then upload the second copy.
 good luck,
 gina

redwa's link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_cQVTvO-aE

Looking at the video, it seems to have been shot on a webcam. If uploaded live, this is something YouTube hasn't managed to fix reliably for the last few years.  I did read something from a staffer, though, that suggested that maybe the problem for some of these comes from the audio gain dropping to very low levels in spots.  You might try checking whether you have any filters in place that might be doing that even for a fraction of a second.  A lot of audio getting chopped out in tiny chunks could account for at least some of these problematic direct recordings.

You could also see whether there's any better success if you record from the webcam to your machine, and edit the video a bit before uploading.  I haven't seen clear numbers on how many webcam videos manage to upload without any sync problems, but most of those I see tend to have at least some subtle sync problems.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 4/2/11 7:14 PM
One more thing, based on the assumption the video was uploaded direct from webcam by way of this link: http://www.youtube.com/my_webcam and I hesitate to repeat it, since I honestly don't know how you'd address this when doing a direct upload, but I've been told that in some cases the audio and video tracks are muxed in such a way that the timestamps are not "monotonic" -- there's apparently a fairly common error like this with renders from ffmpeg, at least that's what a quick search shows, but frankly, as far as I can tell, all this really means is that the audio stream and video stream may contain errors, which they would if something is cutting out bits of the audio intermittently.  I'm still at a loss how to suggest someone, especially on a webcam, is supposed to address this, unless maybe you have a defective driver, or are using some funky filtering.

Be careful searching this by the way.  I'm not sure it's significant, but one of the threads I kept getting drawn to when searching "monotonic mux" led to a site that gave some suspicious security certificate readings, and had no reason to be a secure site at all so far as I could tell.  It came from a cryptic post claiming to link to some documents about ffmpeg, and is probably totally irrelevant to the webcam problem.  I mention it mainly as a caution should anyone be curious enough to locate the mailing list posts that currently still leave me baffled.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 4/2/11 7:19 PM
webcam uploads often have playback/sync problems on YT because:
 – audio and video don't begin and end at the same time
 – frame-rate is non-standard and/or variable

Hi redwa

If you read though all the exhausting paragraphs, you'll see Ebixx said exactly what I suggested: re-convert it. He said take what you shot from the webcam and put in your computer, assuming you used that, then re-do it.

Things are not so complicated as much as some people make them. If you read closely, you'll see not much is really said up there.
 good luck,

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here SJGooch 4/9/11 1:22 PM
Bruce,

This may sound stupid and unprofessional, but after trying a number of rather expensive methods to convert videotape to digital format in a form that is "clean" enough to yield useful video on YouTube, (E.g. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=69C15BBB0F58C663), here is my simple and inexpensive suggestion:

Go to Walmart.  Buy a "Magnavox DVD Recorder & 4 Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR".  (Be insistent; don't be surprised if the staff at Wally World do not know they carry the item or have it in stock.  In my experience, in 3/3 cases the electronics dept. staff didn't know they had it, yet boxes of the product were stacked on the shelves in plain sight.)

Convert your vids to DVD, and then import the DVD into your computer.

Convert & edit as necessary.

Upload.

My video's audio goes screwy about a minute in and I've tried to re-export and upload again still the same.  It uploads and works on Facebook.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here WauWau 4/28/11 1:20 PM
I found a solution to my problem. The video, which was 11 minutes long was converted to 29 seconds with distorted video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RbSnwtq_88

The MP4 file was created with Handbrake. The difference between a working and a non-working file upload was made by the switch "Web optimized". When this switch is activated while creating the movie file, YouTube has less problems recognizing the length of a video. Hope this information is of help to someone.

The video is sped up, audio plays at correct speed. Should be a 10 minute clip, YouTube thinks it is 5.

I used exactly the same video codecs and file type as this video which is fine.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here David Boyle 5/6/11 11:08 AM
Hi RosePetalLex,

We don't handle files uploaded directly from web cam programs very well.  It looks like you used photobooth?  Try importing your video into iMovie, and then exporting it using Quicktime and following these instructions: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=3bc2a517524767a9&hl=en

I examined your video and I am certain this will correct your issues.

Hi Larry,

I'm having some weird trouble with the sound in my video.

The first part of the video is fine, but at 06:15 the sound suddenly goes out of sync. Link: http://www.youtube.com/user/PopLoveDesign?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/xBtysmZ0F0A

I don't know why, I've followed the instructions posted here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=3bc2a517524767a9&hl=en - but I'm still getting the same problem.

Please help!

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here David Boyle 5/9/11 10:58 AM
@poplovedesign

A couple possible solutions:

1.Ensure that you have frame reordering disabled.

2.Under sound settings select show advanced settings and then chose constant bit rate under encoding strategy.

Note, these terms are based off of the options available in the most up to date version, but the key is to make sure frame reordering is disabled and your AAC audio is constant bitrate.  Please do let me know if these changes fix your video.

Hey madfarm1,

We didn't detect the moov atom--or index--of your file in the transcode.  Make sure you file the steps outlined here (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=3bc2a517524767a9&hl=en) and specifically ensure your video is set as fast start.  Let me know if this helps.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here madfarm1 5/9/11 12:40 PM
Those instructions are for mac users. I do not use a mac I have windows based phone and windows computer. Please bear with me as I am not an advanced computer user. I did not do any editing at all to the videos. I just recorded them on the phone and they were saved on memory card and then I uploaded them directly from memory card to youtube via usb.

Hi BoBo2000

I had that problem a few times, too. My video was fine on my computer, but when I uploaded, out of synch.

This is what cleared up mine: I re-rendered the video. In other words, after I selected the video and had it formatted for a  youtube upload, in my computer i did the process again with the video I wanted to use. It fixed the problem in each case. I don't know why, but there is something in the initial formattting that isn't getting it quite right for youtube.

  I hope this helps & I didn't confuse you.

@gbcali. Is that a question or a statement? If you are asking, then no the phone will not play the video. I am just confused why I can take 2 videos on the same day not too far apart and one that is approximately 10 minutes  will play but this one that is little over an hour won't play with audio. There has to be something I can do to get the audio playing.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 5/28/11 8:46 PM
madfarm1, not wanting to jump into the middle of this, but one thing I noticed about your specs for this video (the one hour 15 min. video that is), is that the bit rate mode is variable.

YouTube seems to have a lot of problems with variable bit rate audio. If there is any way you can convert the file to a constant bit rate for the audio, you may find that resolves the problem.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here madfarm1 5/29/11 10:58 PM
@ebbixx jump away! :D  I can see what I can do to convert, but do you think that would make it unplayable in anything including the phone that it was recorded on? I am about at my wits end trying to figure this out. I don't know if it would make any difference but the phone I am using is a windows phone but it also has android on it (which boots from the storage card).  The video in question was recorded when it was booted in windows. But I cannot play it booted in windows or android.
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 5/30/11 12:20 AM
@madfarm1 - The problem seems to be your phone – the Help Forum of the phone's manufacturer would be a better place to resolve your problem.  (YouTube can't be expected to process a video that won't even play on the device that recorded it).

I've split a VOB file from DVD using VobBlanker. The first part of the video is in sync, but subsequent uploads, which were cut by VobBlanker, and which sync in VLC media player, do not sync in YouTube.

As far as I can see, the audio starts about a second before the video.

Help?

I have attempted to upload this video twice so far, and both times resulted in the audio playback being faster than the video, resulting in 'chipmunk voice.'

I do still have the ability to upload videos that are longer than 15 minutes, but it looks like while the video is being processed it is shortening the audio length to 15 minutes, while the video remains at it's normal length.  I'm holding off on uploading any more videos until I can be sure that the audio problem is solved.  Keep in mind I have other >15 minute 720p videos uploaded, with the same specs as shown below, that do not have this issue.

No copyright issues, just no audio.  It had audio briefly, and then the audio vanished.

Parts 1 and 2 of the three-parter were made exactly the same way, and they seem fine.

I shot this footage on Canon video camera and combined 5 different short bits using the editor that comes with the software (Image Mixer 3). It has saved as a m2ts file.  It plays fine on the PC

From the start the video plays too slow and the audio is start stop.

Any ideas?
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here GMT3010 6/9/11 3:38 AM
Hi

This is just something that works for me: Can you render (convert) it to a mpg file or an avi file, any of the  youtube's preferred formats? I have never heard of an m2ts file - but that means nothing I don't shoot from a video cam. There are preferred formats that work best on youtube. Even if that is one they now use, it still might help to re-render it (convert it again). I had a few videos that after I uploaded adn were out of synch, but played fine on my notebook.. But after I re-rendered them, even in to the same format, they uploaded and played fine. Just a thought of somethign to try.

 good  luck,
 gmt
Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here gbcali 6/9/11 4:22 AM
@GetMoreGuy - ImageMixer 3 is capable of creating MPEG-2 encoded .MPG files & ??? encoded .MOV files.  You might try either of those rather than a m2ts file which is typically used for burning Blu-Ray discs  –  pixela.co.jp/oem/canon/e/imagemixer3_se_canon/spec.html

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here ebbixx 6/13/11 2:43 AM
Both WMA and MP3 are audio files. While YouTube uploaders allow any file at all to be uploaded, only valid video formats are converted. Everything else is rejected once recognized as an invalid format.  Audio files can, however, be mixed (by you) into a valid video file with a little extra effort.

Re: Audio/Video out of sync, or audio doesn't play? Look here lmtliam 6/20/11 5:42 AM
If anybody is interested, my out-of-sync audio was being caused by a free VOB splitting program (VobBlanker). The sync was being lost after the position where I cut the video. Using Womble's non-free video editor did the job.
