Children under the age of 13 are prohibited from using YouTube. I have included two articles with advice for parents. You will set parental controls on your home computer through setting up a child user account that filters adult content. Your own personal computer has the most control options available. The parent being present is the best filter, even though I realize it may not always be practical.

lame... youtube should have parental controls...

This is a good policy. I'd much rather set the parental controls on the computer I allow my children to use and know that those controls are implemented throughout the web, rather than have to set parental controls on every website out there. Don't know why anybody would consider this simplification "lame".

Makes me wonder what the percentage of Youtube/Google employees have children. Watch a video on electrical wiring and some 12 yo video troll leaves vulgar feedback for no good reason. Much of youtube feedback is of ZERO value and there is no cleansing mechanism is maintain decency. There's no reason Youtube can't inject a meta tag for a PG/R rating on a per video basis. There's no reason Youtube can't hide vuglar feedback by default. There's no reason Youtube can't step up to the plate and protect children instead of passing the blame onto parents. There's more good video content than there is bad. It's just a shame Youtube big wheels are pacifists on the issue.

@ eworbit: You will not find YouTube/Google employees answering questions in this community help forum. You will find volunteer members of the YouTube community who offer suggestions on how to solve a problem. You are welcome to make your suggestion in the Feedback and Suggestion category.

I agree with eworbit, it would be easy for the You Tube people to put ratings on the videos. If enough people complain, perhaps they will step up to the plate.

Come on, this is YouTube, it's hardly pornography. You can't wrap your kids up in cotton wool. There's nothing said in the comments section they don't hear every day at school. Loosen up.

It tickles me sometimes, how people make ridiculous demands such as this, and always throw in that "it would be easy for the You Tube people..." They're absolutely clueless as to how absurdly impossible a task it would be, they have NO idea what would be involved, but "it would be easy."
Let's just start with the magnitude of it: there are literally billions of videos already on YouTube. Who is going to watch every blinking one of them to determine a rating? Then, there are approximately 20 hours worth of new video content being uploaded to the site every single minute of every single day. How many staff members is it going to take to monitor and rate 28, 800 hours of new videos in a 24 hour day, every day? Who is going to pay for this staff of thousands?

It is sad that YouTube allows users to identify inappropriate content but does not allow users to set filters/controls based on this information. I have carefully examined every aspect of the Account Settings and can not find anything to turn off inappropriate content.

As an educator I have a hard time with youtube. I teach how to use it and am very clear with parents to not let kids have free access. My probelm is that I have to watch many videos before I can show them. Friday I had a child work for a Shrek video (reward for doing great on a test). I had to skip over the Shrek porn, Shrek have sex, and the other really inappropriate things. My nephew repeated "I'm Pooh Bear and I even have a penis" over and over once. Really people? I strongly believe in free speech, but people have way too much time on their hands! Youtube is a wonderful place, but I don't want my students going home say things like that. Then I get to explain it to their parents. I do know that once it is flagged you can't watch it until you are signed it. But I would love to create an account for a student that would filter out inappropriate content or block flagged sites. Is that possible?
