Tips on how to share a Private Video Liz YouTube support 10/14/09 12:56 PM
Hi guys,

We've recently seen questions from some of you regarding the new way to share private videos. A few points to note which may clarify the process...

*** You cannot share a private video with more than 25 other users. If you'd like to share the video with more people, you'll need to set the video to "public".

*** Once a videos is shared via the private URL, it cannot be unshared. Therefore, use your 25 invites there wisely!

*** The "Limited Access" box won't stay permanently selected until someone accesses your video for the first time- even if you've marked the video as private and sent the video to your friends already. Someone must first watch the video before the "Limited Access" box will appear selected.

*** In order to watch a private video, your contacts must already have a YouTube account. If they don't already have an account, they'll first need to sign up for an account, and then once they've activated their account they'll then be able to sign in and watch the private video you sent them. If they do not sign into their account before watching the video, the video will not load.

To learn more about sharing private videos with your contacts, I suggest visting this Help Center article:
http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?&answer=157177

Thanks to all of you who made posts on private videos for letting us know the process wasn't clear. Hope this info's useful!

~ Liz

Maybe put the link to learn about it (this page) right next to the box you tick to make the video private.

I am lost on getting the list of contact names increased. There are a dozen names on my contacts, friends, family email list. However, only three names show up under any private video on the Broadcast for private use window. There must be a trick.

When will Google allow unlisted (unsearchable) public videos so that one can share a video with more than 25 people, share it with people who are not Youtube users, and still have the video "semi-private" (accessed only by people who has the URL link).

This seems to be a very basic feature that many people would want to have, but I don't know why YouTube refuses to implement it!

Team Blog Barriers!!! I set up a private team blog on Google Blogger. Then I embedded videos just for the team. I made the videos private because it is dog training and people don't want their dogs broadcast world wide when just learning (highly competitive people). But no on on the team can see them! The team members are NOT computer intuitive. It is hard enough to walk them through gmail, now I have to tell them to get YouTube accounts? I just don't get why I can't share privately on Blogger more easily. This has been a waste of a few hours on a lovely day. FRUSTRATED!

Where do we find the private URL. This can't be clearly marked. Is there a "share" button for these 25 invites?
Thanks.

Hi all, please, if someone could advise I would appreciate it.

I would like to have a video that is NOT PUBLIC - IT IS PRIVATE, BUT, I want to embed it on my website in the password-protected area.  Thus, someone who is registered on my website, and has access to the private areas on the site (password protected areas) would be able to view the video, whether they have a YOUTUBE account or not, since it is embedded, BUT, if someone searches for the video on YOUTUBE, they will not find it.

I want to use this as a "reward" feature for people to register on my site.  I have my public music video showing, but it is in a lower quality.  What I want to do is upload the HD quality video, have it private so that anyone can't see and download it, but embed that into my website's password protected area.  Thus, if someone wants to get the free HD video, they have to register on the website.

Can I thus give my actual website access to a private video?

Once a Private video has been shared to a friend, can that person download it, share it, or make it public?

I have the same question as RiaanEloff set out above. I would like to allow only the users of my website to view my video on Youtube- but no Youtube users. Please advise if possible. Thank you.

I agree with rvs007. How can I share a private video with more than 25 people? Do I only get 25 views? Can my 25 invitees forward the invites to other people? I need to send out invites to about 100 people. How does youtube keep track of this?

download Coola from toponode.com. Coola is a collaborative platform built for people to share movies on hulu.com or videos on youtube.com, etc. Through Coola you can share private videos with anyone you liked.

So basically, you're using private videos as a way to sign up to youtube/google accounts. Ridiculous.
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video rockhammer 12/24/09 7:21 PM
Is there a way for me to create a private "collection" (for lack of a better term) of videos of indeterminant number of videos such that I can share this "collection" with select friends only once and they will get updates as I add more videos to the collection in the future, without having to invite them to see each of the private videos individually?

This also seems like a great, time saving feature to have.

And I echo the request to add the feature for unlisted/unsearchable public videos on youtube - this feature is there in picasa from day one it seems!

Thanks.

I agree, absolutely. I have an equestrian website forum, and as a trainer, I want to be able to post videos for my paying members to benefit from. But as there are 200 of them, I cannot use Youtube to do this. I would happily pay for hosting if this would cause youtube to introduce this, rather than a measly 25 people being able to see the video. I am now hunting round the internet to try to find uploading facilities that do allow an unlimited number of people. Photobucket does, but it takes a month of sundays to upload an HD clip.
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video AndrewFaulds 2/19/10 8:30 AM
Dear YouTube,
Many of us would like the ability to be able to Upload videos, but hide them from Subscriptions and Public Search Results, by Default (but you could choose to search for "Hidden" videos).
This would be good for users who like to make videos with multiple paths using annotations, as then there is only one starting point, and it eliminates any confusion.
The videos would not be Private, just Hidden by Default.

The only problem with Private videos are that people can upload porn videos while going undetected and unreported/

Hi
How I can share my video, when it is record in The Sims 3?
I made it in PowerPoint, 'cause I don't knew otehr way... (sorry my english isn't the best, i am from Czech Republic xD)

Help please, or i'll unconscious (or how is it written)
:-(

Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video Taedia Fortunata 2/21/10 10:04 AM
I don't think PPT files can be uploaded to YouTube. You will need to make it in a YouTube-compatible format.
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video MrsDEMOLITION 2/21/10 10:39 AM
Yo
I'm one moment after I wrote this question I do it :-D
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video AndrewFaulds 2/21/10 11:44 AM
There is no way to upload PPT files.
In the Office 97 version of PowerPoint there was an export to ActiveMovie (ASF) feature, but this is no longer available.

ALSO, The Sims 3 has an official Machinima editor (which can upload to YouTube), so you shouldn't need to use PowerPoint.
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video MrsDEMOLITION 2/21/10 12:01 PM
Yes Sims has got, but I find way with other program "Windows Movie maker" xD
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video cldesorgher 2/24/10 1:47 AM
Hi I used to use this all the time - I run a dance troupe and I post our rehearsals privately so the world doesn't see our work until we're ready. Up until now, when I clicked on the 'private option there has been an option to share with friends and a list of potential friends would appear. I would click on the eight names in my troupe and they would be able to see the video. Now it says 'Private share with You Tube users' and there is just an empty box saying 'To (username)' and another box for a message. I've tried putting the usernames and the email addresses of my girls in but that doesn't work, I've tried copying from my list of friends but that doesn't work, I've tried using the 'secret' URL but they just get a message saying 'Invalid Secret Token' when they click on it (even when they are signed in). I'm in tears of frustration trying to get this working. It used to be a brilliant resource but I don't understand why it has changed!!
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video stvlkh 2/25/10 7:17 PM
Stupidity of the new video sharing system is beyond imagination. As the previus user noted, it used to be a simple "click on the friend's name" feature, and it worked flawlessly. Now, regardless of how many times I try to send a private video to a friend, all the friend is able to see is a "This video is private" message upon attempt to click on a link in the e-mail. After several attempts to re-send a video, I am completely blocked out of this feature by a "friendly" message: "You have shared too many videos recently. Please try again later". Thank you, Youtube. Maybe its time to consider other video-sharing websites.
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video cldesorgher 2/26/10 2:12 AM
Does anyone from You tube ever answer these forum questions? I also posted my issue on the Bugs and Technical Issues board but two days later my post is about 16 pages in and it looks to me like the chances of an answer to my question are approximately nil :(

Thanks so much for that link Olafrv. It seems everyone is having the same problem and You Tube are aware of it. Hopefully they will sort it out.
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video lwerker 3/14/10 12:29 AM
Since Google does not seem to feel the need to give a response to these complaints, what are good alternatives for using youtube.com?
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video AndrewFaulds 3/14/10 12:55 AM
lwerker: Vimeo is one of the best alternatives. It's free, fast and has high-quality streaming (although restrictions on how many HD videos you can upload each week)
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video dftmweb 3/14/10 8:04 PM
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE W/ ALL OF YOU!!

Their ABSOLUTELY INSANE video sharing system is CREATING FAR MORE PROBLEMS THAN IT IS WORTH!!

When did the "geniuses" @ Google implement this??
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video footaction 3/19/10 6:35 AM
I love this question/statement below that a user asked. I couldn't have said it better and am asking the same question!!!!

Where are you youtube? You seriously need to change your policy. My company is now looking at Vimeo.

Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video anmoose 3/19/10 8:32 AM
@footaction, this issue, ongoing for months now, is just one of the increasing number of examples showing that YouTube no longer cares one bit about what their users want, or need. The attitude, as demonstrated by their total refusal to even acknowledge serious usability issues such as this, has pretty much degenerated to the level of "take it or leave it." The "user experience" has dropped out of their view altogether.

Vimeo still cares...
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video stvlkh 3/28/10 6:57 PM
I think people should start leaving this "service". After a long break, I decided to give it another try, and share 5 videos with a friend. After sending 3 invites, a "friendly message" appeared, saying that I have "shared too many videos, try again later".  That's it. there are other video-sharing services out there. Dailymotion is one of them - 20 minute videos can be uploaded, sounds interesting!
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video syrdax 4/7/10 10:27 AM
How about make it like picasa where I create an album and set a number of user I just want them to view my stuff?
Why can't be that simple?
I keep getting messages like "you shared too many times"...
Re: Tips on how to share a Private Video lwerker 6/6/10 12:16 AM
I stopped using YouTube and switched to using dailymotion.com. Offers more video minutes and large filesize. If you want to distribute the movie, just send your friends a link to the movie.
