|How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||ZooKristaps||3/9/10 11:27 AM|
The title says it all. Whenever I play a video from my subscription or from suggested video, it automatically plays the next video. Very, very annoying. How to turn it off permanently?
Clicking "Autoplay off" on every video is just painful, and I often forget about it.

|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||3/16/10 12:36 AM|
As it currently stands, Autoplay is horrible. Two things need to happen in order to fix this and it's a bit shocking that this even needs to be pointed out to :
1. The default should be "Off" not "On".
2. It should be configurable in My Account / Account Settings / Playback Setup
This is elementary stuff. That YouTube failed to set it up that way makes it quite obvious that someone somewhere screw up royally.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Elderfairy||3/16/10 2:09 AM|
I am having the same problem. I have only experienced this in Firefox. The other browsers are unacceptable for various reasons.
Nodeity says it all.

Please get rid of the autoplay, it's annoying, I like to control the video I want to see, not YouTubes autoplay! Get rid of this feature! Thanks
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||anmoose||3/16/10 8:43 AM|
Absolutely agreed. Autoplay is probably THE most annoying "feature" of ALL of the annoying "features" in this new design.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Rainwash||3/16/10 12:29 PM|
I agree I don't like it set to Default on, and should be a setting to switch it off permanently.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||3/17/10 1:04 AM|
My first message in this thread was somewhat rational. This one if more emotional, fueled by yet another annoyance caused by Autoplay.
I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate the way Autoplay is presently set up and I am extremely frustrated by YouTube's inattention to this matter.

|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||ZooKristaps||3/17/10 5:53 AM|
As people have suggested, there should be an option somewhere to turn it off.
Or at least a feature when the website "remembers" my preferred setting. If I've turned autoplay off 63 times in a row, there's quite a chance that I will do the same 64th time too.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||3/17/10 11:13 AM|
@tjw1963 Last night I also sent YouTube a fax containing my more rational expression of dissatisfaction with Autoplay. I don't know exactly where it goes or who receives it but it can't hurt to try. I included my email address in the fax but haven't heard back from them yet.
If anyone else wants to go that route, the fax number is 1 650-253-0001
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Sockmess||3/21/10 9:10 AM|
autoplay is pretty annoying. Have to remember to click it off everytime. If only i can set the default then it wouldn't be as bad.

Yes... Please fix, the feature it nice but WHY WHY WHY it's set on Auto and the fact that there is no way to set this to OFF is sooooooo... I can't even find the words. Just careless.
Fix it before it's too late.

YouTube just acknowledged the heineousness of AutoPlay, in the YouTube Blog:
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||tunespt||3/26/10 6:26 PM|
Yes, definately, remove the darned thing, or at least give some control over it, that already would be nice.
For me is 100% undesirable function, as I view a video, comment and rate and go see another one, not exactly the next one in the subs or search.
Please, autoplay off by default at least...
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||JamesMorlan||3/26/10 10:59 PM|
Autoplay feature must die.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Jeangrey56||3/27/10 1:13 AM|
Life is short, and I resent the time wasted to fool around with account settings and options in an attempt to turn off autoplay. When I finally came to this help page, it was a relief to know that the problem is not with me, but with poor planning and implementation by Youtube. Shame on them for wasting my time. I wonder, for each person who posts here, how many others experience the same problem and remain silent?
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||superrya||3/27/10 9:09 AM|
Auuugh, I HATE this feature. I already have a slower connection and the autoplay button makes watching my subscriptions a painful experience. I'd at least appreciate the option to permanently turn it off, but I just spent fifteen minutes searching on preferences until I finally gave up, googled it, and ended up here.

I just want to save bandwidth to my limited broadband subscription; and this feature is eating a lot of MBs, while sometimes I just want to view a peek of that video, or browse a channel.
I remember a Stop button available a while ago; would be nice to put it back.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Ooglegog||4/4/10 8:00 AM|
Just when I thought YouTube couldn't get much worse... Auto-Play!!!
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||ZooKristaps||4/4/10 11:11 AM|
Luckily Youtube has done what we've been requesting all the time, and autoplay is not longer constantly on!
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||brainetree||4/19/10 6:26 PM|
I have three channels. My first two channels do not have auto play, but I just created a new channel today and auto play is on. I definitely want to turn it off and don't see how. Frustrating when one has waste a substantial amount of time hunting up a solution that should be right there plain to see.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||brainetree||4/19/10 6:56 PM|
Where is the answer to this problem?! It's very serious. I can well understand all the frustration being expressed. Who has the time to research this for hours?
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||sneakcgw||4/29/10 12:22 PM|
How to disable YouTube's Autoplay: I can confirm that this userscript works on Firefox to disable the Autoplay, titled:YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads
You first need Greasemonkey installed. It is slightly sporadic in that it might play the video for a fraction of a second and then stop.
But, I would still prefer YouTube to provide this function for all browsers.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||groundstrength||5/1/10 1:04 PM|
Sometimes Firefox fails to load the Youtube Channel all of the way. This happens almost EVERY time a video wants to autoplay! Not only does the page become entirely useless, but the sound from the video still plays and there is no video!!
I'm soo frustrated at both Firefox and Youtube for their crappy programming.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||anmoose||5/1/10 1:32 PM|
It's not Firefox, it's YouTube's crappy design. I get the same interference in Opera, not always, but most of the time. The page is frozen entirely useless until the ENTIRE video downloads, because the loading sequences are coded in such a way that the video gets priority, and the rest of the page simply doesn't finish loading. I found that by hitting the stop button in the browser, it cancels the download and the page finishes loading. It's just another reason in my book for hating autoplay AND YouTube's idiot product engineers.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||medea05||5/4/10 3:07 AM|
So this hasn't been fixed yet? Oh, great.
Every time youtube is 'improved', the dumbass autoplay gets turned on again.

|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Mark Thompson||7/29/10 7:37 AM|
Please disable the autoplay feature.
Your developers CLEARLY lack an understanding of how to execute this development.
What's the need : A replay/loop option for videos when users select it - only.
What was delivered : A nonfunctional feature which streams random videos from some of my collections , which does not render properly and does not allow users to turn off.
EVERY video watching experience is hampered by this feature on the upgraded servers. How that affects your revenue is only one way - badly and the clock is ticking.
Please eliminate this feature development, and assign another feature development / programming group to address any potential need in this area, this group CLEARLY does not have a good capacity to execute on this functionality.
Why do I have to point this out to your feedback team, How did this feature get rolled out (AGAIN) without any polling/testing.

This new auto play bar that pops up at the bottom of the screen on every videoi I watch is the PITS! YouTube, get rid of it right away! It is useless. I start to comment on a video and I am automatically sent to the next video in my sub list. How annoying! It is driving me crazy!! You can't expect people to remember to turn it off everytime they watch another video. Give me a break! Get rid of it post-haste; it is useless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really dislike youtube's subscription bar and that is set to autoplay. are they trying to annoy us on purpose.. if something works don't mess with it,, what is the deal with all these changes they all suck.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||bathtubnz||7/29/10 1:41 PM|
They screwed this up again. Why would someone defautl autoplay to on? This is basic stuff.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Mmmkp||7/29/10 4:47 PM|
I agree autoplay should be OFF by default. Just commented to let YouTube hear our thoughts on this.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||illdiology||7/29/10 4:55 PM|
For the love of Pete - if there is someone at Google that actually reads this forum, they need to do whatever it takes to get the entire idea of 'Autoplay' completely removed from Youtube forever and ever amen! Whoever thought up such a user-hostile concept!? Google is starting to look like a bunch of clueless academics - they know every minute detail of every piece of tech and absolutely NOTHING about things like user experience, design or usability.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||DieZaLot||7/29/10 5:22 PM|
Unbelivable, how hard can it be to disable such a small feature as autoplay?!?! Is every single programmer sleeping on the job? Have they been asleep for months??!! WAKE UP AND GET RID OF THE DARN THING ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Autoplay sucks. Everyone around agrees with that. Do you not like your users? Are you just having a laugh at our expense? Don't you read your own forum?
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||PaladinGC||7/29/10 5:36 PM|
Not that this will apply to many others here but....
I was experiencing the same problem with autoplay shifting from the end of one vid to the beginning of the next in a play list. This, not for myself, but for my readers. See, I use youtube as a source for music for my readers to listen to while reading and responding to my writing. A tone setter, if you will. The day they added the autoplay feature, some of the links and embedded players started flitting from the end of an appropriate musical work to something that wasn't.
The button to turn off autoplay is cute. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Regardless of the button working for me or not, that has no effect on the audience. They're not on my computer, and they certainly aren't using my login. It's not going to work for them. The fix I've discovered for that was stripping the related feature and playlist codes out of the URLs, and just using the basic video URL. That stops it for links and embedding.
Having to go back and edit a couple of hundred URLs was a little annoying, but I can live with it. Still, this really should be changed to [default: autoplay = off].

I still have the grey bar, and auto on that can never be turned off.
youtube fuckheads fix please

for firefox people with greasemonkey addon.
the autoplay-OFF greasemonkey addon that's posted elsewhere works
I"M using it with the filters to remove the grey bar of shit, but it also appears to work if you
are of an odd disposition and like the steaming grey bar of shit
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||rizeljamn35||7/29/10 7:14 PM|
I agree, turn the autoplay function OFF by DEFAULT...
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||7/29/10 7:20 PM|
It's really bizarre that they've made the same mistake again. OFF BY DEFAULT! It's a simple concept, guaranteed not to piss off your users. Print it out in bold type, YouTube, and put it on every wall where any of your developers work.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Asiablue7||7/29/10 7:46 PM|

|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||al007italia||7/29/10 11:27 PM|
Add my voice to the multitude who hate autoplay. Is YouTube trying to drive away users? It sure seems like it to me.
I hate autoplay, I want it permanently removed & whoever came up with it owes us all a huge apology.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||JamesMorlan||7/30/10 12:01 AM|
The feature is stupid. This is well known. And when it went away (or was at least turned OFF like it needs to be), I thought for a moment that there was actually someone on the UI team at YouTube that listens to the users. That perhaps even agreed that, hey, you know, this feature really does suck grubs through a garden hose! But, NOOOOOOO!!! Apparently, it is some developer's pet concept that they just can't bear to part with, because the F-ING thing is BACK! AND, it comes with an annoying self-expanding overlay that obscures my ability to POST A COMMENT to a video, because I can't get to the Post button when the damn overlay jumps up!
Get a focus group. Do some user testing before shoving these features in our faces. How would you like it if I came to your house and painted it yellow and installed an elevator in your driveway with a big neon sign on it that said, "THIS WAY TO ME", just because I thought it would be cool? Some ideas simply must not live. Get over it.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||paulgr||7/30/10 12:48 AM|
I think it's clear that those who make a decision like defaulting "AutoPlay" to "On," DO NOT USE THE SITE, at least not in the way that I and most others do.
If they do use the site, then they're going with the greed factor to push more vids with more ads no matter what.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Sootikins||7/30/10 5:18 AM|
Everything that I wanted to say has already been said in this thread. I'm only posting this to make the thread grow longer and hopefully GET YOUTUBE's ATTENTION.
- AutoPlay is useless worthless annoying and stupid.
- AutoPlay should cease to exist immediately.
- If that is not possible it needs to be OFF by default and STAY off.
I'm sick and tired of all the changes and new "features". Here's a concept: It works well & people are liking it - let's lay off most of the developers and leave it the FUCK alone!
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||StupidButCunning||7/30/10 6:28 AM|
I too, find this horrendous. It's not a difficult programming change to make the default option off for Autoplay. They could at least take YouTube down for 5 min to do that quick change, and THEN work on the options to set it up in your Account options.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||HeWhoIsMack||7/30/10 6:32 AM|
Hey Youtube, aka Bunch of A-Holes, why the heck do you have to be such jerks, first with an entire new layout when it was ABSOLUTELY FINE in the first place and now this? It's so damn annoying. 1st problem with it is the fact that if I mouse down the page just the smallest bit the damn thing enlarges and covers up a good portion of the screen, completely obscuring my view and it happens over and over again. 2nd problem being I can't permanently turn off the damn autoplay, for godsake that is such a fundamental flaw I can't believe you didnt think of that, I'm right in the middle of writing a comment then BOOM all of a sudden I'm in another video, sure i could just flick autoplay from on to off on each video but I always forget to and frankly i shouldnt have to anyway. Fix it PLEASE for the good of us all!!!
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Chris Lanctot||7/30/10 7:12 AM|
Wow. What a complete and total failure. You really can't underestimate how annoying this is. This is tantamount to making the salt, pepper, ketchup, and mustard all the same size and color in a restaurant just because someone got a bug up their ass to revamp something that was working fine already or NO GOOD REASON!
The old changes already made it hard to read/make comments when watching something on someone's channel but now I can't even read/make comments on videos in my own subscription feed? WHY?????????????????????? No way to turn it off? WHY??????????????? It makes no sense at all. I don't want to watch every F'ing video in my subscriptions every time a click on one video. Do DVR's make you watch all your recorded shows when you select one to watch? No huh, I wonder why? Could it be because that is a completely stupid idea?
I can't mouse down to try to select another video because the stupid auto play bar pops up and now I can't see anything. Who on earth thinks that is a good idea and will enhance revenues or improve the users experience? Find this person and kick them in the balls if they work for you.
You have to fix this. I am watching less videos because of this stupid "enhancement". Step 1. I am going to unsubscribe to everything and just bookmark individual channels and check them that way. Step 2. I AM GOING TO GIVE UP ON YOUTUBE COMPLETELY AND STOP WATCHING VIDEOS ALL TOGETHER. Maybe you should fix this before I and others get to step 2.
You want to do something useful? How about indicating when a channel has more than one new video in the subscription feed? I am constantly missing videos when a channel adds 2-3 videos at one time. Since this scenario was just totally not foreseeable by YT developers (NOT) I have to manually check channels after I watched the most recent to see if their were more. How about stacking all the videos I have not seen one under another or have a number icon that displays the amount of new videos. That is, you know, if you are not too busy ruining the YT experience by coming up with more asinine things like auto play default on. ArrGHHHH!!!!!!
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Chris Lanctot||7/30/10 8:07 AM|
ADDENDUM: Here's reason number one you should fix auto play and the grey bar o shite as it was so lovingly named. I had adblock plus disabled on YT. Now because of your idiocy I have it enabled with the grease monkey script (which works great by the way). So instead of enhancing my user experience and increasing your revenues you have pissed me off so much I now block all ads and I get to see the videos I want.
Good job in frustrating me so much that I research then implement things that completely negate the mechanisms that generate revenue for YouTube.
I am Youtube. I am derp.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Shogo||7/30/10 8:35 AM|
Why does Youtube create the most annoying features and have the audacity to call them "improvements?"
The grey bar is very annoying and quite useless. Why did you not give us the option to turn it off?
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||PaladinGC||7/30/10 11:54 AM|
Step 1. I am going to unsubscribe to everything and just bookmark individual channels and check them that way.- - jeep6242
Funnily enough, by doing this and manually stripping the playlist and other youtube &codes out of the URLs, autoplay ceases to function on my end. It worked for my readers, so it should work for me too, right? Why yes... It did. As long as the video is not being viewed as a part of a collection, your 'enhanced features' such as Autoplay and the obnoxious gray bar that comes with it don't exist.
Unlike the really angry members in this thread, this doesn't bother me enough to drive me away. It is, however, hurting Youtube and Google through their advertisement systems... Put simply, you're getting less of it from me and my readers through your many partners because we have taken steps to subvert an unwanted feature. A feature you have re-implemented in a way that is proving detrimental to the user experience.
No, this won't drive us away. The broken flagging system may do that, but this won't. This is merely irksome, rather than destructive. We can, however, move on to my step two, wherein we begin to use third party software to customize our own user experiences as we deem fit. It's not hard. Just a few lines of scripting.
I'm well aware the likelihood of an employee actually reading this post are somewhere close to zero, but it will remain out here for other users to read.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||rjtnews||7/30/10 12:09 PM|
PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE...the new "auto play" feature at the bottom of the screen is "awful", can't even leave a reply to your videos! If you switch it off it comes right back on when you go to the next video, I hope you can look into this, thank you!

|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||TheBratKingJareth||7/31/10 12:39 AM|
The fact that someone actually thought the autoplay feature was a good idea is laughable.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||BionicDance||7/31/10 1:33 AM|
I get the impression that YouTube really wants us to have a very specific experience and mindset when we come to the site, and they're willing to piss us all off with interface changes that FORCE this experience on us, like it or lump it. I suspect they want to make us use YouTube THEIR way, and make these changes to the interface to force us into that experience...no matter how hard we fight against it.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||monkeyface||7/31/10 6:32 AM|

Yeah, can we get rid of this useless piece of crap? If I want to watch the next video, I'll click the damn thing myself. I don't need a freakin' robot telling me to do shit I don't want to do.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||quaxk||7/31/10 10:05 PM|
peeps, this has nothing to do with improving user experience or catering to the community, it's to increase view count thus increasing revenues, no matter what, it might alienate <1% of heavy users savvy enough to find their way here, but for the occasional users I bet it increase the time they pass on the site, I'm sure they will add an option to turn it off and bury it deep in the account settings if we complain enough
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||Shoushou69||8/1/10 5:28 PM|
I hate this stupid subscription bar.. I hate having to click, "Off" every single freaking time I play a video. Normally, after a video stops, I favorite it, but now it goes to the next video in my favorites that I didn't even want to watch!
YouTube, PLEASE FIX THIS NOW. I DON'T MIND THE STUPID GREY BAR, BUT PLEASE CHANGE IT SO WE CAN CHOOSE TO KEEP THE AUTOPLAY OFF PERMANENTLY IF WE WANT!
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||weegingayin||8/2/10 9:20 AM|
The Grey bar totally screws up opera mini on my mobile phone.
With autoplay on I may be writing a comment and befor I get it finnished
it jumps away to the next video. TOTALLY frustrating.
And mega stupid. Get rid of it.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||xoxoLeony||8/2/10 12:27 PM|
auto play and the grey bar need to go! NOW! and never come back! EVER!
it is the most annoying change to any website i have ever been part of. and youtube's/google's help & customer service is plain ridiculous. as are your developers who seriously believe crap like that is a cool idea. that person should be kicked off planet earth.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||8/2/10 6:46 PM|
Autoplay and the grey bar appear to have disappeared -- for now.
If they come back [shudder] they MUST BE CONFIGURABLE! To throw in those kinds of "features" and not give users the ability to turn them off is inexcusably incompetent.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||8/2/10 6:53 PM|
Well, the grey bar is back and there appears to be no way to make it go away completely but at least autoplay is now defaulting to "Off'.
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||DieZaLot||8/3/10 5:09 AM|
finally :D the autoplay is gone, or at least is off by default.
now get rid of the grey bar. do that and I'll be happy
|Re: How to turn off auto-play in the new layout?||NoDeity||8/4/10 3:56 PM|
If they don't get rid of the bar, they should at least give users the option to turn it off (and have it stay off).
