General questions around the new YouTube comments system and Google+ ytDangler 11/11/13 6:12 PM

Why do I have to use my real name when commenting on YouTube?

You don't have to use a full name. You can continue to comment using your channel’s name on YouTube.

You have a few options with Google+. You can use your YouTube username on your whole Google Account (it will show on other services you might use, like Gmail or Blogger), or you can keep your full name on Google completely separate from your YouTube name. Click here to learn more.

After connecting to a Google+ page or profile, where did my playlists and videos go?

On desktop:

You might be signed in to the wrong channel. After you connect your YouTube channel to a Google+ page or profile, check www.youtube.com/channel_switcher. Here you can switch to your channel to access your favorite videos, playlists, and more.

On mobile:

After you connect your channel, it’s best to sign out and sign in of the YouTube apps or m.youtube.com. Once you sign back in, you can pick your channel to access your favorite videos, playlists, and more.

Why can't I reply to, like, or dislike some comments?

If you're signed in to a channel connected to Google+, and the buttons for reply, like, and dislike don't show for a comment, it's probably because the comment was posted under the old comment system. While comments from the old system will show up in the new system, they're not fully compatible with the new system, so you won't be able to take reply to or like/dislike those comments.

In addition, comments made with the new system can be set to have replies disabled, in which case you won't be able to reply to them.

Why can’t I see any comments when watching a video?

Blocking third-party cookies can prevent comments from appearing. Be sure to not be blocking "youtube.com" and other Google cookies, like "api.google.com". Disabling these can also cause a log-in pop-up to appear when you try to type in the comments field.

A browser extension may be blocking comments from appearing. You can try these steps:

  • Disable all of your extensions (particularly any ad-blocking/social widget blocking ones) and you should be able to see the comments again.

  • Re-enable each one at a time to figure out which one is blocking the comments from showing.

  • Once you've found the extension giving you issues, try upgrading it to see if this fixes your issue.

I want to give feedback about the new commenting system and Google+ integration. Where will my voice be heard?

At the bottom of any YouTube page, click on the Help button. From here, click on the “Send Feedback” link.
