Wondering how to see uploads only or browse the most popular videos on YT? Skip to the FAQ at the bottom of the post. Else, take a look at our guide and learn more about the new look.

YouTube team members recently went on a Hangout to answer some of the most popular feedback we've been seeing. Find out why the layout isn't centered, if we'll ever default to My Subscriptions and more here.

Hi everyone,

Today we’re announcing a number of improvements that we’re making to YouTube.

In this post, we’ll go over what these improvements are, how they make your experience better, and how to make the most of them.

Please read over this post carefully to get up to date on the changes and be sure to check the FAQs at the bottom of the post.

The Guide

With this update, we’re taking the Guide from the homepage and bringing it to most pages on YouTube. The Guide is built to keep you up-to-date with the latest videos from your favorite channels, no matter where you are on the site.

Homepage

Your logged-in homepage is the destination for all of your subscription activity.

1.  Account Links

This area provides quicker access to the links you need. Here you can quickly navigate to your channel, your playlists, videos you have liked, your watch history and even access those videos you saved to watch later.

2.  Feed Views

From this area you can select the different ways to view your feed.  Your default view is What to watch, a highlights view of uploads and activity from your subscriptions and videos recommended for you from your watch history.  You can also select one of the other view options to see videos from your social connections or videos from your subscriptions.  If you select My Subscriptions, you can also adjust your subscription settings to view all activity from the channels you are subscribed to or Uploads Only.

3. Subscriptions

If you have favorite channels on YouTube, you can highlight these channels over on this side navigation bar for easier access. Clicking on one of these channels will populate your feed with all of that channel's activity.

4. Subscription Options

In your subscription options, Browse channels will take you to a menu of channels for you to check out and subscribe to.  You will see channels recommended for you as well as top channels in categories such as Music, Comedy, Gaming, and more.

You can also visit Manage Subscriptions which allows you to edit which activity you see from your subscriptions, which channels you are subscribed to and the email notification settings for each channel.  You can learn more about your options in our article for the Subscription Manager.

5.  Your Feed

The feed displays new videos and recommendations based on your interests and activity.  What appears in the feed changes based on the feed view you select using the Guide.

Your default view is What to watch, which shows highlights of uploads from your subscriptions and recommendations from YouTube. My Subscriptions shows uploads and activties from the channels you’ve subscribed to, and can be filtered to show uploads only.

Managing Your Subscriptions

In the Subscription Manager, you can bulk edit the way you interact with your channels.  By selecting the checkbox next to the channel, you can choose if you’d like to be emailed when that channel uploads new videos and if you see all of that channel’s activity in your feed or just their uploads.

You can also manage subs from the feed.

By clicking on activity in your feed, you can select if you’d only like to see uploads from that channel, your email options for that channel, or if you would just prefer not to see that activity in your feed.  You can also unsubscribe from a channel in this box.

Video pages

On a video page, you’ll now see the information, subscribe button, sharing options and more, packaged neatly together beneath the video. When watching a playlist, you’ll also notice an improved menu that appears to the right of the player -- it lets you toggle and scroll through a playlist easily.

On the left side of the page you’ll see the Guide, and a “More From” section that shows you more videos based on what you just watched - if you came to the video from a homepage feed, More From shows videos from that feed. If you came from a channel, More From features the most recent content from that channel.

FAQs

Q: What’s different?

In addition to a general improvement on the look and feel of the site, the Guide now appears on most pages in addition to the homepage. Video pages have been improved to put more focus on the video itself and now feature an improved playlist viewing mode.

Q: What are the benefits?

Experiments have shown that people subscribe and watch more with these improvements enabled.

The Guide that you see on the homepage and watch pages puts videos from the channels you’re subscribed to front and center. For viewers this means it’s easy to find videos, and for creators it means it’s easier for your subscribers to get to your content.

Q: The design changed last year, and we didn’t like it. Why change it again?
We’re thankful to have people so vocal about their YouTube experience. We rely heavily on this feedback, as well as our experiments, to find the features that keep people coming back and enjoying YouTube. While the initial reactions weren’t all positive, we’ve updated constantly since then, and have seen people watching, subscribing and uploading more videos since then.

Q: Why are videos on the homepage not in chronological order?

Your default view is What to watch, a highlights view of uploads and activity from your subscriptions and videos recommended for you from your watch history.  You can also select one of the other view options to see videos from your social connections or videos from your subscriptions.  If you select My Subscriptions, you can also adjust your subscription settings to view all activity from the channels you are subscribed to or Uploads Only.

Q: How do I see uploads only? I only want to see videos in my feed

In the Guide, click on the “My Subscriptions” feed view. From that view, click “Uploads Only” at the top of the feed. You can also use the Subscriptions Manager to set each of your subscriptions to show uploads only, or everything else.

Q: How do I browse popular videos?

When you’re logged out, the homepage will display popular videos. When you’re logged in, use the Browse Channels menu. At the top of “Browse Channels” there’s a “Best of YouTube” category. The “Popular on YouTube” channel under that category features the most viewed and most popular videos on the site. If you’re checking this out often, you should subscribe to the channel too.

Q: Where is my Inbox?

When you have new messages, a “Messages” button will appear in your Guide. If you have no new messages, you can access your Inbox by going to the Video Manager or by clicking on your username in the top right of the site and clicking “Inbox” in the menu that appears.

Q: Where can I give feedback?

A: Your feedback is extremely valuable to us. Send us your feedback using the Send Feedback button at the bottom of the page, post in the Discuss and give feedback category, or let us know on Twitter at @YTCreators and @YouTube.
