all search results redirect to wrong sites Sunbeem 7/5/09 10:07 PM
Several times I do a Google search, for unrelated topics.  I click on the search results that look like what I need, and get redirected to a totally unrelated site, usually just an advertisement but sometimes a search engine I've never heard of.  This has happened several times over the past few days, for several unrelated search topics.

This is driving me nuts because every time I do a Google search, I end up getting sent to a stupid ad site or no-name search engine.

Examples:

I search "Illinoi is sales tax required" and click on the link to the Wikipedia page for "sales taxes in the united states", and the page that loads is http://www.hellolocal.com/ypsearch3.cfm?kw=accountant

I search "garage sale tax regulation" and click on the link to reason.com, and instead get directed to http://www.findstuff.com/home/search/?uvx=W7gIytRTMOymIUNFL8NgpD4ZafA3v1VcCmCPWLgwOtd2P7ShEfrWOVhtk_NZyuXhrW8g_yCu11dqbHuIbdpW7eQwgwFjBqtoXioSX9vRu9ro2eHgO09ANj23FEglvSVvFBYVJMmETzeFNNVUPElD3xJ7i9Q4HPU4eXvY3Zqj8qtuHfXqsZrPQA**

I search for "blue amphibole" and click on the link to nature.com, but it redirects to http://www.x-xn.com/f/search.php?q=#KEYWORD#

I search for "earthquakes in Minnesota", click on the search result "Table Showing Minnesota Earthquakes" (from morris.umn.edu) and instead get directed to http://www.x-xn.com/f/search.php?q=#KEYWORD#      again.

The behavior you are seeing is consistent with malware being on your computer.  I would suggest that you update your antivirus program and run a thorough scan.

Follow-up with supplementary anti-malware scans if necessary. There are three products listed in the following article that are free for non-commercial use, but there are certainly many others you may try.  No one will be able to tell you exactly which product will be the one to work for you, as there are so many variants of malware that produce the same symptoms, it is a trial and error process.  Be certain that you update any definitions for any products you use, immediately prior to scanning.  You will need the latest updates the vendor has available.

Because of the polymorphic nature of various forms of malware, and the fact that anti-malware vendors simply can't produce products that can detect everything before you experience it, your best defense against future infection is to make certain that your operating system is fully patched and all software applications are updated with their latest security updates. Operating System, browser and other application vulnerabilities, especially out-dated versions of Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Quicktime, WinZip, AOL SuperBuddy and Java, are often the reason your machine was infected in the first place.

The problem could be an overlay.xul file that is used by Firefox.
See the instructions listed in the last answer, they solved my problem.

Thanks for your help, but this isnt just my computer it is true for everyone who does the search.
The link is wrong through  google, and needs to be corrected by them, any ideas?

@brbcsecretary

Are you the original OP in this thread, using a different name?

>but this isnt just my computer it is true for everyone who does the search.

Which search?

Yes I originally posted this question yesterday.

If you search my church, Broad Run Baptist Church in VA, we are listed 1st in the reults at 5143 Broad Run Church Rd, New Baltimore, VA... then if you click on the link it takes you to a church in west va also called Broad Run Baptist but they are a different church in a different state. As a result no one can find our website by doing a search.

Since this is a totally different situation than the original topic in this discussion, let's keep this conversation in the discussion you started yesterday, that is located here:

I had the same issue after an ave.exe malware attack after trying many other antivirus and malware products like mbam, ad-aware, superantispyware etc i was losing hope. but then I tried Hitman Pro and it wiped it clean in 3 minutes..  O anyone with search redirected issue should give Hitman Pro a shot - its free for 30 days too.

I just had the same problem and battled it for about a week.  Now I think I've got the solution.

I noticed the redirect behavior was only happening when I was searching with the integrated search from Firefox and not if I went to http://www.google.com.  I removed the search engine and re-installed it.  Go here for a list of all the search engines offered: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=&cat=4%2C0.

Anyway, the redirects have seemed to stop now.  Hope this helps.

Ok, I take that back!!  Redirect still occurs.
I'm following this thread: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Web+Search/thread?tid=6df7e15519290612&hl=en

I'm installing Hitman Pro from cnet.com.  Everyone on there seems to be raving about it.

I've been fighting this thing for about a week now, found and removed an infection, still problem, downloaded stopzilla (per another board) and got frustrated with it, deleted it without fixing problem, many hard-to-do searches because everything was going to caranddriver.com or some other ad places instead of where it said it would.

Finally, today, I stumbled across a hosts file fix. I believe this has solved my problem... It makes sense... Someone loaded up my hosts file with a bunch of bad redirects for valid domains....  Hope this helps someone else with this problem sooner than I found it. BTW: google MVPS HOSTS for the solution I used...

I found a rougue DNS entry for ALL of my adapters, Wireless LAN Virtualbox etc you can run Trojan remover from susoft to fix this!

The entry was:
93.188.163.57
and
93.188.161.188

The "host file fix" from pctechwill two post above worked for me.

I went to www.microsoft.com and type in "host file fix" and it tooke me to a page (without a redirect). I clicked on the Microsoft FixIt icon (little guy with a wrench and hat) and it immediatly fixxed the issue after a quick reboot!

All of my google searches were redirecting and now no problem. Great job pctechwill!!!!

Re: all search results redirect to wrong sites Staple003 7/30/10 11:42 PM
Also, just something I think caused this...

Right before this happened I was on a site and the JAVA 6 loader popped up. Shorly after my software firewall asked if I wanted to give permission to some exe file. All the publisher content looked like Microsoft so I allowed it.

That's when this started with all the redirects. Whoever created this made it look like microsoft software. I should have know better since I already know java has so many ins when it comes to creating problems.
Re: all search results redirect to wrong sites edwardt 8/15/10 11:52 AM
i had the same problem and it turned out to be the virtumonde.prx virus (also known as Vundo/ MS Juan). Download Malware Bytes Anti Malware program to get rid of it. NB - this is a clever virus in that it knows the names of anti virus & anti malware products & stops them running. You have to rename the mbam.exe to something else (say edit.exe) in order to run.
