Me too. Just today. I hate/love Google.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? fxam 5/21/09 6:55 PM
I am having this problem in Opera 9.64 since a few days ago. Firefox 3 works fine.
Nothing happens when I press Enter in the search textbox.
Nothing happens also when I press Enter when a link is in focus.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? julieY 5/21/09 8:16 PM
Same thing in Opera 9.63, just started today. Annoying enough that I may have to start using something else (meaning a different search engine)

Does anyone know if the Google folks pay any attention to these kinds of posts? Is there any way to contact them to request they fix it? I remember there used to be some kind of email feedback form. You didn't get a response but at least you could directly send a comment to them. I can't seem to find a link to that any more.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? julieY 5/21/09 8:24 PM
There seems to be a partial work-around, maybe this will help someone else. I found that if I logged in to my Google account and then logged out again, the Enter key would work properly from there on out as long as I didn't close the browser and kept the same tab open in Opera (same tab I originally tried to search from, and from which I had logged out of Google), but not if I closed the tab and opened a new tab after logging out of Google. And now it seems to sometimes work sometimes if I just stay logged into Google. So maybe others can try variations of that as a temporary fix.

same problem here as well. started a few days ago with Opera 9.64

Same with me. Very annoying :(

Turning the query suggestion feature off in Google preferences, everything works fine again.

Google is providing faulty javascript code to Opera.  Not only is it faulty, it does not have the same features as the original javascript code that was given to all browsers.  The Opera-specific javascript code, in addition to breaking the enter key functionality, does not show how many search results will be provided with each suggested term.

There is a simple fix.  Go to Tools | Quick Preferences | Edit site preferences.  Click the Network tab on the right, and choose Identify As: Firefox.

Google will now give the working javascript code to Opera.  Google should really stop this nonsense and give all browsers the same working code if it works with them instead of suddenly decided to break the code they were supplying to Opera after years of it working fine alongside Firefox.

The Enter key in Opera does not work for me either without setting site preferences.

As far I remember Opera sued Microsoft once for similar bahaviour of their MSN.com site. So I guess they will sue Google too for crippling their browser if this is not fixed soon.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Th0masB 5/27/09 4:51 AM
If you mask as internet explorer it works, but the search suggestions look crappy. When you go to the site preferences (right-click menu) and enter the url of the above mentioned js-file everything works!
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? sehe 5/27/09 3:52 PM
Opera 9.64 now has this issue on both Ubuntu Jaunty and Open Solaris. Very annoying.

Eradicating cookies does not help a bit. I couldn't care less for the 'search suggestions' box. Perhaps this should be made an opt-in, or just disabled by default for browsers not included in Googles Q/A testing?!?!?!

It really hurts my brain to know that Opera users are still getting this bug because somewhere the if-statement says: "IF OPERA THEN SERVE BUGGY PAGE, ELSE SERVE FIXED PAGE". That is just lame

Thank you, mihau.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? aweibell 5/29/09 12:23 AM
How come Google hasn't commented this after eight days?! I would assume they followed the discussion? Maybe we have to CALL them? :)
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? daveadams 5/29/09 2:10 AM
Can you fix this god damn problem already?
Identifying as Firefox doesn't work for me either.

This is so frustrating, and it's ridiculous that Google is taking so long to fix this. At least provide a hack which excludes the suggestion box for Opera until you've fixed the problem.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 5/29/09 2:39 PM
Setting "mask" as firefox works (not just "identify").  Although this seems to break other Google stuff, this forum included (d'oh).  Seems like this has been broken for a while now, pretty bad.  I haven't been able to find any kind of Google Search bug report system either, there's a Chrome bug page, and a Gmail bug page, but apparently none for Search.

Waiting for a real fix from google -.-
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Servekiller 5/31/09 11:13 AM
Unbelievable!

Hey, Google guys! You know trying to frustrate Opera users won't make Chrome more popular, trust me! People will then stop using Google not Opera, Yahoo is nice alternative also you know ;)

Making your web pages unusable by some other browsers is very lame, I truly hope that this isn't because of Chrome!

Get this s*hit fixed soon!
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 5/31/09 11:27 AM
Where is Google staff?  This is a help forum, is it not?  Would someone who works at Google please let us know what's going on?
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Jimmy Deheeger 6/1/09 2:16 AM
A fix is on the way!

Pretty soon, hitting the Enter key after typing a query will perform a Google search in the versions of the Opera browser that you've reported.

I wanted to check in with all the relevant people on my team before giving you the official word on this issue. That explains the delay in my response. I understand the frustration at not hearing sooner about such an important issue. Promise to do better next time (lets hope there won't be a next time!).
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? David Bloom 6/1/09 12:35 PM
Some of the suggestions above mentioned masking as Firefox. That will make [enter] work again, but it will break other Google services whose Firefox-specific code won't work in Opera.
Until this is fixed, your best bet is disabling suggestions, or just using Opera's built in Google search box by the address bar.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/1/09 12:57 PM
the problem is right here:
window.onkeypress = function(k) {k.keyCode == 13 && k.preventDefault()};

What bugs me is that web developers are letting Firefox do to web standards what Internet Explorer did.  Everyone should stick to writing compliant code first and foremost.  Yes, IE is still the most popular but developers who know the state of affairs should push to let their team leaders allow them to target IE (or Firefox, as it too apparently seems to require special code more and more) only _after_ they have working standards-compliant code.  The Google javascript is full of flags like google.isOpera, google.isIE, google.isSafari, I hate seeing stuff like that.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/1/09 1:01 PM
Not that that onkeypress above isn't compliant code, but you get the drift.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Member01 6/1/09 8:13 PM
I have found a solution to this problem. First, go to google, right-click on the search field and select "Create search...". Then, click "Details" and copy the whole "Address". Second, find "Tools" on the menu bar, select "Preferences..." and go to "Search". Lastly, find and select the google search engine and click "Edit..." and paste the address you copied and now it'll work normally.

1. Go to google, right-click on the search field and select "Create search...".
2. Click "Details" and copy the whole "Address".
3. Find "Tools" on the menu bar, select "Preferences..." and go to "Search".
4. Find and select your google search engine and click "Edit..." and paste the address you copied
5. Done

"hitting the Enter key after typing a query will perform a Google search"

Cool.. and it only took a 20,000 strong employee company half a month to fix practically the only interface to their primary service.
Hitting enter performs a search... now that's something worth waiting for.

Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Hellas 6/6/09 1:28 AM
I am very annoyed by this error by Google. I cant believe they will simply throw away few millions of Opera users.

Shame there is no other search engine relevant as Google.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Hellas 6/6/09 1:56 AM
I just found on another thread that Google announced fix that will be pushed very soon. Thanks Google.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/6/09 10:34 AM
Still broken.  On one lousy javascript statement.  Everyone reading this should check out http://www.cuil.com/, a search engine made by some former google employees.   See how their search suggestions work and the enter key submits?  Wow.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? androidlove 6/6/09 10:46 AM
I just checked out cuil.com. There's a joke. Try a side by side search with Google. Laugh.

How's that fix coming?
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/6/09 10:50 AM
Cuil actually does a better job at deep web type searching than google does.  What keywords did you use for comparison?
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/6/09 10:54 AM
Actually I sort of see what you mean.  Oh well, monopoly, everyone wins.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? androidlove 6/6/09 11:00 AM
Member01 has the right idea. Works like a charm.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? androidlove 6/6/09 4:24 PM
Ok, Member01's solution only works for the Google main page and not the results page . I guess I should sit tight as the problem has been confirmed by Google. With all that brain bower at Google, it should be fixed by morning.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? androidlove 6/6/09 9:27 PM
Well, Member01's solution stopped working. I decided to not be lazy and create a user js folder for ondatra's solution.

ondatra wrote:
"You can use this user js:

Problem is fixed.

I too lazy to turn off "query suggestions". Thanks, Google, for making the best suggestion a link. It's better than "I'm feeling lucky" which was covered by the "query suggestions" drop down anyway.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/7/09 3:42 AM
Fixed now, and suggestions work properly also, glad to see they're not disabled by default.  Thanks, Jimmy.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/7/09 3:59 AM
spoke too soon.  it's working on the results page but not on the main page.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? worldzend 6/7/09 11:47 PM
There are so many things that have started going wrong using Google in Opera. My results preference keeps reverting to 10. When I narrow the search to "blogs" or "groups", I get a "no returns" reply even though, by re-entering the same search terms, there are the expected number of returns. And the "enter" problem. If I wanted to be annoyed, I would use Bing. Get it together, Google.

Quick and Easy Fix.......
Open google then click on
Tools/Quick Preferences/Edit Site Preferences/Content
and un-check 'Enable Java'
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? roentgen 6/9/09 12:32 PM
They fixed Enter on the search box but they didn't fix enter on links, when using spatial navigation (shift + arrows).

google IS the next microsoft
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/9/09 1:56 PM
enter is back to working nowhere for me.

yeah, seems to be working for me too... Thanks, and sorry for previous comment.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? Jimmy Deheeger 6/11/09 4:34 AM
Anyone out there still running into this issue? Please share your reports here so that I can go through them one by one. I'm seeing quite a few posts suggesting that hitting the Enter key on the Opera browser is back to doing what it does best: returning loads of helpful results to your Google searches. :)
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? roentgen 6/11/09 4:42 AM
@Jimmy Deheeger

Now it works correctly both for the search box and for the links.

Still... google IS the next microsoft :)
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? cthubik 6/11/09 7:40 AM
Seems fixed now for me.  Thanks.
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? mam01 6/12/09 4:49 PM
I'm not using Opera but the other thread says to reply here so....I'm still having this issue on different computers (XP and XP Pro), all using Firefox 3.0.11.  I've tried all the cache/cookie deleting.  Disabling javascript works, but I don't really want to disable javascript.  Is it related to me being signed in to google?
Re: Why doesn't the enter key work on google main search with Oper browser? literatist 2/16/10 6:42 AM
Okay, I started having this silly problem, after I manually changed the search address of google.co.uk. I had wanted to use .co.uk as opposed to .com. I thought it would be as simple as typing the address. After I deleted the long search line in the box, the whole thing got screwed up. Then, I saw member01's suggestion:

QUOTING:

I have found a solution to this problem. First, go to google, right-click on the search field and select "Create search...". Then, click "Details" and copy the whole "Address". Second, find "Tools" on the menu bar, select "Preferences..." and go to "Search". 3. Find "Tools" on the menu bar, select "Preferences..." and go to "Search".
4. Find and select your google search engine and click "Edit..." and paste the address you copied
5. Done

This works miracles!

Hi Jimmy we are experiencing this with IE8. Any help would be appreciated. It seems to be related to the query suggestions.
