If you are using Internet Explorer 7, click the magnifying glass's dropdown arrow, in the top right search box. Choose "Find More Providers", and choose "Google" from the Web Search list. Clicking on the mag glass dropdown again, you can Change the Search Defaults to make Google you default search provider.

To make Google your home page, go to www.Google.com and click the dropdown from the House icon (below the search box), and "Add or Change Home Page".

Djseebs has already answered that for IE7 but for anyone typing it in on bing or something and finding this while on IE9 like me, you go click on the gear in the top-right corner, Internet options, and go to the "Search" setting in the "General" tab. From there, go to find more search providers, click on "Google" (or whatever provider you like) and add it. Then, go on it and press "Set as default."

did that for Internet options tools in IE9 but Bing moves to first position in Accelerator and I can't get Google to stay as the Toolbar default search engine.  Any thoughts?

Thank you Froobeh!  I felt like a prisoner to Bing!  HATE that search engine!!!  I would type in "Google" into Bing search bar then search from Google Now I have my much beloved Google <sigh>
