|How do I remove the Google Redirect Virus = Solved?||RolandBrian||8/22/10 6:10 PM|
I searched the responses on these forums and couldn't find a solution until I finally came across Kaspersky's Rootkit.Win32.TDSS description of the issue and their solution.
Download and run Kasperky's Tdsskiller follow the instructions. Once the software finishes and reboots your Google searches will work once again as they were intended.
Follow this link for the full description and instructions: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
Download tdsskiller here: http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip
I hope this is helpful and those putting out these viruses spend some time behind bars for wasting our time..

Thanks for the update, RolandBrian.
It's not surprising you missed the several references to "tdsskiller" as a solution, in the marathon discussion on this subject:
the first mention here being back in March this year.

Here is another vote for the Kasperky's Tdsskiller. It worked for me when nothing else I found did.
I went directly to Kaspersky's website and downloaded it from there. I chose to do that rather than risking following anybody's posted link (always risky).
Do a Google search on "Kaspersky" and it should be right at the top. Go to the "Downloads" section and then to "Virus Removal Tools". You can download the TDSSKiller zip file from there.
It's a quick little file that found and got rid of the problem for me.

I had this problem for a week and began to distrust any advice given on the internet. I remembered seeing the java logo appear just after the trouble started and someone mentioned some of the malaware was attached to java. To get rid of this I clicked the following sequence Start then control panel, Java logo, temporary internet files, settings then you can either delete them or view them. I decided to delete so clicked delete files then OK then restarted computer and it was all OK after that and havent been redirected since. I had been trying every possible antivirus ware and none had worked so very pleased with myself. So the problem in my case was with a problem java temp file. Hope this works for you.

In addition to last message I had been directed/advised to varios sites where you were supposidly been offered free antivirus ware only to find at the end of the scan you had to purchase something to get rid of them and by this time wasnt trusting anything so this might be worth a try i couldnt see that removing temp files was going to affect the working of my computer anyhow.

I tried all of the antivirus/spyware software and while they found some problems none of them corrected the problem. I also read about a virus that actually changes the firefox files, so I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox. This seemed to work for a few hours and then the problem returned. I then read this forum and the post above about removing the java files....problem solved. Thanks aeast....

I have been suffering this redirect problem for a year or more and it was driving me crazy, I downloaded 'fixes' that were 'guaranteed' to remove it. Did it? Like hell it did! I searched for other fixes and got no positive result
In desperation I deleted the system partition (twice)! Reloaded the O/S and still the google redirect was active. This gave me the clue and I had a eureka moment. If deleting the system partition didn't fix the problem then it must be something outside of my computer, the only thing I could think of was the router.
I carried out a factory reset on my router and then reconnected to my ISP. I have not seen the redirect issue since!

If you have a Google Redirect virus in Windows XP, check the file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts. It's a list of the IP addresses your browser must use for certain URLs. Some malware makes additions to the list, to redirect your browser's calls to Google and other search engines. These additions remain after the malware is removed and must be deleted by hand. The malware may also hide "hosts" from Windows and DOS: if you have Norton Internet Security, Norton Power Eraser will find and fix it.

Easy fix 's suggestion - go to the http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
download and run the microsoft safety scanner - worked for me .
it took a couple of hours on my laptop ( cause laptop would go into sleep mode ) when it finished scanning all disk drives - it then proceeded to clean .I left it to do that . the scan picked up about 431 infected files and the clean report found four malware items including the google redirect virus . it prompted me to reboot .
on rebooting it said windows could not start - i said 'oh s- ' and chose the repair prompt out of resignation . it then asked me if i wanted to do a system restore ... i said yes . that took a while ( maybe 40 mins ? ) but eventually my sign in page returned . i logged back in and so far things seem ok and my google redirect problem has gone

I tried at least 6 malware programs, nothing worked. But I did find a fix! I uninstalled Firefox, then I ran CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/) set to 35 passes. It removed everything! Then I downloaded and installed the latest version of Firefox. Now when I click...I go where I expect to!!!

hay guys this one is pretty bad. but go into your registry (to do that got to run and tipe "regedit") you will find a file by the name of some thing like this AS5-GHFJKS-E3784 but befor you do anything back up your registry after that delete the file then download and run cclener (this virus will hide in you temp. files) after you run cclener restart your pc (i dont know about mac's sorry) after it reboots go to run and tipe %appdata% and back up into your appdata folder and go into your local file thar shold be some new files thar that look like AS5-GHFJKS-E3784 delete them. and hopefuly the virus will be gone. hope this helps (yes i have spelling errors so what)
plz tell me if you have any proplums after that!! :P

Win 7 64bit: I just did a system restore to a point 10 days earlier and that's all it took. Everything is normal, all scans clean. Browser, search engines and network connection all functioning normally.
