|Google search results poor quality - Bing giving better results.||JaredNJames||8/27/12 8:32 AM|
For the past few weeks I've noted that the quality of my results have gone down hill drastically.
For example, if I sign out and clear all history / cache etc and search for "dzus latches" it shows me a variety of results from many websites. However, the moment I sign in my search results are all from the same website. In the case of "dzus latches" the top 50 results are all from the same "southco" website. I just searched for "hp laptop wet keyboard" and the top 30 results were from "answer bank".
This makes the search results unusable. Especially when out of the many results from the same website, the majority link to the same page.
I have checked this on Windows, Ubuntu and iOS and it is always the same.
The new personalised search tracking thing in the settings wasn't in use when this started to occur, I enabled it and nothing changed and now it's paused and it's still the same.
Everyone else I have asked to do test searches whilst signed in get the same results I would expect (a wide variety) as opposed to be constantly bombarded with one website.
It's terrible that I'm actually getting better results from Bing.
Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps someone from Google can tell me why they rendered their most powerful asset useless for me?

Just searched for "camfil gt7 bag filter" and was swamped by some site called "gearzap" trying to sell me a Samsung Galaxy tab.
Bloody hell Google, sort it out.

Thanks for providing the very detailed feedback about these results. Would you mind filling out this feedback form so that I can try and investigate further?
|Re: Google search results poor quality - Bing giving better results.||JaredNJames||8/28/12 3:16 PM|
Well I filled it out, but it giving general feedback doesn't exactly help me or guarantee a result.
The results are now getting worse.
I searched for "convert cubic metres to cubic millimetres" and just had a load of links to facebook pages. What good is that?
What is it about me being signed in that causes this problem? Where can I delete everything you know about me and 'start again' as it were (the web history is not active).
I'm now officially using Bing for all searches as Google is unusable. Never thought I'd say that.

Thanks for filling it out. Would mind also taking a screenshot and letting me know if you have any extensions enabled?
|Re: Google search results poor quality - Bing giving better results.||JaredNJames||8/28/12 11:23 PM|
Thanks for the reply.
I have no extensions enabled and the problem occurs on a fresh install of Ubuntu, Windows, an iPad and my Android phone. Tested in both Firefox and Chrome. If searching without being signed in and the cache / cookies / history cleared then it works exactly how search should. However, the moment I sign in the results suddenly become unusable. So I'm confident it's an issue with my account and some form of customisation from Google.
I have performed the "dzus latches" search and taken screen shots of the results down to the point 'other' websites are shown (it takes six screenshots of my 22 inch screen, taking me 50% of the way down the search results - I get 100 results per page).
I'm going to post again after this with me being signed out and the cookies / cache / history cleared just to show that it is an account problem.

OK, as above: signed out and everything cleared.
One screenshot of perfect results.

Slightly off topic, but suddenly Gmail is refusing to filter spam. My inbox is being inundated with it.
Have I done something to annoy Google?

Thanks JaredNJames! The screenshots are really helpful. I assure you that you haven't done anything to annoy Google. This isn't personal :) While I can't help with Gmail spam (you'd have to take it over to the Gmail forum, I'm working on the case of your results while signed in and signed out. Out of curiosity, could you try one more thing with me and in your settings enable Instant (which will give you 10 results) and see if the same thing happens signed in vs. signed out?
|Re: Google search results poor quality - Bing giving better results.||JaredNJames||8/29/12 2:10 PM|
I enabled instant (whilst signed in) and the results were fine.
Out of curiosity, I disabled instant (still signed in) and then set it to provide only ten results per page (instead of 100 as I normally have). This solved the problem of masses of links to the same website.
So I can get good results by using only 10 results instead of 100.
However, when signed out I can get the 100 results to work correctly but not when signed in. Previously, 100 results worked correctly whilst signed in. So it seems that me selecting 100 results per page is causing the problem. Hopefully that can narrow it down for you when looking at exactly what is happening.
I'd add that on other peoples computers when searching they only had it displaying 10 results per page, which may explain why they seemed to get 'normal' results whilst signed in and I didn't.
I can happily say I can live with 10 results for now, although it would be nice to know what the issue is. Brilliant catch on your part.

Thank you for being so on top of this! I've seen similar reports and am glad we found a common thread. I'm glad you can work with 10 results and multiple pages for now while we work on this.
Thanks again for all of your attention and detail with me!

So Sarah, this continues to happen when I do searches. When is Google going to actually fix it? I see people complain, I fill out the forms to complain I fill out forms for "suggested Feedback" "Unexpected search results?" etc and I still have it happening.
It creates the problem of not getting the results and diversification in the results, so the only option is to clik on the adwords ad, which artificially inflates the cost of those keywords, which ultimately make the cost go up. google keeps making money, the searcher gets poor results and the only suggested fix is to make my results suck worse by using instant (which I refuse to use) or out my results to ten (which I refuse to use)
Why doesn't google fix it? I keep complaining, but nobody fixes it. For almost a year i've seen it, but again, nobody fixes it? Look at my other post, i put screenshot after screenshot. People called me a liar and accused me of fraud, even after I posted proof. Google just ignore it
I think they are ignoring it because it has proven to increase adwords clicks and like stated artificially inflates the cost of these keywords. That can't be legal can it?

Are you deliberately ignoring my replies to your other posts or are you simply mentally deficient?
I'm sorry but you are playing dumb here to promote a conspiracy there is no evidence for (remember I asked you for screenshots for proof and you ignored it?).
