|New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||bluequoll||7/25/10 11:25 PM|
Some aspects of the new image search interface have, for me, made image searching more difficult. I've installed the following Greasemonkey userscripts in Firefox(3.6.8) to make things easier until Google can make improvements by incorporating some of the user feedback into the interface.
While the new interface is in the process of being rolled out and tweaked by Google these scripts might break at any time, but for now I'm happy with the results.
Please feel free to post any other useful scripts you know of for Image Search.
Google Image Basic:
Forces image search to always use the "basic version".
Google Image - direct link:
Changes the title under the results page thumbnail into a direct link to the web page containing the image, bypassing the large pop-out image:
• To use these scripts, install the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox:
then install the scripts from the above links.
• The limitation of the first script is that it loads the results in the new UI, then switches to the basic, so there is a delay while the first page of results loads and switches.
• The second script is dual purpose: Clicking the thumbnail opens a separate window containing the full size image. Clicking the link under the thumbnail opens the web page.
Another workaround has been posted by algotechie in the following thread:
so I'll include it here for easy reference:
Another method that would automate the process (so you won't have to do anything to load the classic layout) in Firefox is to install the add-on Redirector found at "https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5064/". Once installed, open its settings (right click its icon in the Status bar). Under the Redirects tab, click the Add... button. Type in the following strings in the indicated fields:
Include Pattern: http*://www.google.com/images?*
Exclude Pattern: http*://www.google.com/images?*sout=1*
Redirect to: http$1://www.google.com/images?$2&sout=1
Select Wildcard for Pattern Type and click OK. Now as long as the add-on is enabled, the Google image results will open in the classic layout. To disable the add-on, click on its icon in the Status bar; click again to enable. (Note that you can redirect any other URL's with the add-on in a similar way. Read the accompanied documentation for instructions and to know what the above patterns are doing.)
Addendum: If you're using a country specific domain of the Google website (e.g., "google.co.uk" instead of "google.com"), use the following strings instead; the rest of the procedure is the same as above.
Include Pattern: http*://www.google.*/images?*
Exclude Pattern: http*://www.google.*/images?*sout=1*
Redirect to: http$1://www.google.$2/images?$3&sout=1

Most awesome. I tried another greasemonkey script, but it didn't work. This one works great.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||fixitman||7/27/10 6:33 AM|
Even on cable, it was taking forever for a Google photo search to load, the above greasemonkey scripts solved that!
Now, Google.. you should put in the Preferences section to use the old search!
It was much better.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||mudhooks||7/27/10 12:19 PM|
Thanks! So far, so good!
I also installed an add on Tab Mix Plus which enables opening in new tabs/windows...
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||mudhooks||7/27/10 12:22 PM|
Is there something that will allow me to choose the number of images? I'd like to be able to pick more than 20 hits at a time...

We can use old google image search in four ways, here the detailed post about it

This is WONDERFUL but I should note that it only seems to work in the original or Basic Mode.
Not a problem since I hate the new format anyway.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||untitleddd||7/30/10 10:38 AM|
Thank you SO much!
@GanEden install this add-on
then install this script (there's a button that says install)
it should switch to the old Google Images after that.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||eimpson||7/30/10 12:11 PM|
Have to refresh every time to make it work, but that's still a better option than waiting for the link at the page bottom to spawn.
Any chance you've spotted a script that reverts Google News to its previous useful state?
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||rkimpeljr||7/30/10 12:28 PM|
Thanks on both counts!
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||blunder||8/1/10 9:27 AM|
there is a slight delay, but other than that the script is AWESOME!!!
bye bye all the crud changes to GIS!
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||adliv||8/1/10 5:43 PM|
There is actually a much simpler way to revert to the good old GIS style.
No need to install anything, go to any other country, do anything by hand, or assume any other gay position just because Google decided it got smarter.
All you need to do is change the user agent so that it does not contain "Firefox" (or "Chrome" or "Mozilla").
Simply change it once and for all in about:config
Sadly, this is yet another example of how corporate asses are losing contact with the ground.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||adliv||8/1/10 5:47 PM|
Just a warning -- this trick might stop working any time, so you'd better bookmark this page, just in case.
I wonder why they did not embed a poll next to the search option, to get some Real feedback from users on how much the new GIS sucks...
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||frobitz||8/2/10 2:08 AM|
What is wrong with Google? The new image search is terrible. It even manages to lock up by browser occasionally. >:-(
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||WeWilloWinky||8/2/10 10:31 AM|
Thank you, bluequoll, for the advice about the Greasemonkey fix. I hope Google is listening to the wails of discontent about the new image search format.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||lisal1||8/6/10 10:21 AM|
You rock, bluequoll! Installed the Google Image Basic script, and all is well once again.
(I've already migrated away from google news. I'm getting the feeling that I may end up abandoning more google services if they continue down this path of yucky format changes.)
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||iboe||8/8/10 12:28 PM|
I used the Redirector add-on for firefox and it works great. The only problem is that all these solutions come to fix the problem of the interface, and do nothing to change what you get after you actually pick an image. Now that is what bothers me; because you need an extra click in order to go see the website, which is time consuming.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||bluequoll||8/8/10 3:33 PM|
@iboe: >> all these solutions ... do nothing to change what you get after you actually pick an image
Strange that the Google Image - direct link script didn't work for you the same way it works for me. As I noted in the first update to my original post, when I install this one it does actually allow me to go direct from the results thumbnail to either the web page or the image, depending on whether i click the link under the thumbnail or the thumbnail itself.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||kevinkendall||8/11/10 8:08 PM|
I use FF, & have the Greasemonkey added on, plus the Greasemonkey "Google Images Basic Version" script installed, but before I discovered that I came up with this, & wanted to drop this in here because this workaround is browser & operating system-independent :
IRRITATED WITH THE NEW GOOGLE IMAGES SEARCH?
Though some people like it, LOTS of people are bewildered by Google's new Images Search.
But today, fed up & flustered with GI's inflexibility as far as a semi-permanent user's choice being available, I copied the 2 URLs from each version, discovered the culprit in the URL, & then I made a very simple workaround fix.
The WHOLE mess can be fixed by adding this to the results URL, it turns out: &sout=1
So with that discovery, I made a page wherein no images show up, but it is in "Basic Version" mode -- -- A workaround that anyone at all can make use of, and one that will work in ANY browser on ANY operating system.
Click on or copy/paste either of the two links below (they both do the same thing), & then bookmark the GI "Basic Version" page that comes up, for your future use. Or right-click on the links if they're clickable & then bookmark the links themselves from the resulting rt-click context menu, if your browser offers that:
So if you're tired of waiting for 540 pictures of Hawaii to finish showing up when you're, say, looking for only a single map of Oahu even though you used search terms that were very, very specific for only just such a map (well, that's not all bad is it, really, but just sayin'.....), then you'll like this simple "any ol' browser or operating system" workaround.

The Google Image Basic userscript worked like a charm!
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||wwwallyh||8/16/10 11:28 AM|
Setting your interface search language to Elmer Fudd or Pirate only yields basic image results...!
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||dwight.stegall||12/4/10 1:26 AM|
I don't understand why but every time I use those greasemonkey scripts they get corrupted and blend together to the point that the sites they were meant for look like crap! I've had this problem on four different computers. I finally gave up.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||dwight.stegall||12/4/10 1:28 AM|
But I don't seem to have any problems with userstyles and the Stylish Addon.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||dwight.stegall||12/4/10 1:33 AM|
here's a bookmarklet i made to directly search the old style image search with the page numbers at the bottom

|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||shadowedvalleys||2/18/11 5:15 PM|
The scripts work great - link to go to the direct page or right click to open image in a new tab! GREAT! Perfect, how it should be from the dunces who coded the damn site.
Amazing, why don't they just force us all to speak pirate or elmer fudd, since we obviously dont count when it comes to the choices we want.
Google is a tool, not an authority. They are rich enough that they can give US the sods who make them rich, a little bit of bloody leeway with things like.. Oh I dunno, Settings?
Google, I'd sack you for things like this......
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||TheCroW555||2/20/11 2:41 AM|
Yep, workarounds for Firefox work great!! But I have a way more simple solution: Firefox together with the NoScript add-on. I used that now for a while and I have a normal Google image search now and no more totally useless popup at the page which has the searched image. Good thing with the NoScript add-on is that, when needed, with 1 click Google can be allowed for one session.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||fm-usa||4/3/11 11:37 AM|
I'm totally 'mind blasted' by Google’s lame less decision to tell US to install 'Scripts' to fix their own problems.
Of the folks who do install these scripts there are billions of other users who will not install them. Does this suggest Google only wants .00001% of the world to use their services?
Fault is with Google’s software, not the browsers.
Google’s software WAS working nicely just over a year ago.
Go back to where you made the mistake and fix that.
. . . or is there someone in your employ who is sabotaging Google?
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||rkimpeljr||4/21/11 2:47 PM|
My GM script is no longer working. Did Google do something to un-fix it? Yes they did. They no longer have /images? in the image search URL.
OK. I fixed it. Just take "images?" out of the search pattern. Of course you end up with a few extra sout=1 here and there. Oh well.
This is getting unbearable. Why won't Google just change it back?
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||rkimpeljr||4/22/11 7:42 AM|
GAAA! the landing page with the lightbox is back now, too!!! This is terrible. It's bad enough that Google made us fix this ourselves once, now we're having to fix it again. Why won't they just change it back to the way it was? I don't even see how they get more ad revenue from this.
Unfortunately, my JS experience is limited, and the GM script is not documented well. It will take me some time to figure out a fix for this.
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||rkimpeljr||4/22/11 7:49 AM|
To be specific, that's the Google Image - direct link GM script. I found a new version of it here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/48293
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||jmcnulty||4/28/11 11:05 AM|
In the above strings just replace */images?* with *&tbm=isch*
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||mudhooks||5/3/11 3:23 AM|
Again, Google has removed the ability to click on the link under the image, forcing you to click on the image and then click on another link on the second page to get you to the Fucking originating website. Why do they assume everyone wants to go to a Google page with the image instead of to the website with the image ON it, thus taking twice as long to get to the page?
And why, after SO many complaints do they developers continue to foist the bleeding "Standard Version" on users who don't want it?
|Re: New Google Image Search - Workarounds for Firefox Users||mudhooks||5/3/11 4:16 AM|
This link DOES work http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/48293
It doesn't open in a new window without right clicking and selecting "Open in new window" but at least it works. Thanks rkimpeljr

Disabling Firefox 4 add-on XULRunner worked for me. Loads fine now.
Not sure what I'm missing with XULRunner disabled but it works
