|Why did you change the Google format?||Motherfuker||4/1/10 5:41 PM|
FYI you're new format sucks. All that shit on the left-hand side just seems intrusive. Google was far and away the best search engine as it was. if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? Well, you fuckers just broke it, and now I seem to be posting this as a question cos I can't find how to complain to you direct.
At least you should have made this change of format OPTIONAL..........
I'm half tempted to try out that new Bing thing, even though I'm pretty sure it'll suck.
Please either change your shit back, or give veryone the option of whether to use the old or new style.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Rubie||4/2/10 1:37 PM|
Thanks for posting! While we really appreciate your feedback, please remember to only use language that's appropriate for all ages. Our community aims to keep it PG in here. :) Thanks for understanding!
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||shihannn||5/3/10 12:39 AM|
Please PLEASE PLEASE change it back!! Or give the option too. I love google so much, but this is making me HATE it :(
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||awesomo4000||5/4/10 8:41 PM|
How come the Google employee didn't answer the question? I almost want to switch to Bing unless Google goes back to how it used to be.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||awesomo4000||5/4/10 8:42 PM|
I also hate it when people say "cheers" and then their name. (unless their british).
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||imademymark||5/5/10 7:11 AM|
how can i change it back on chrome?
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||whywhywhy357||5/5/10 1:11 PM|
If I wanted clutter, I would go back to something like Yahoo or over to Bing. The change sucks, although given Google's recent actions they won't care about all of our opinions and will just shove it down our throat while some PR employee like Ruby there will smile and wave and remind us to "watch our language". Hey anyone here remember Customer Service? I guess that stops when you have billions of the customers dollars. I recommend that if they do not give the option for a "classic view" we just don't patronize the website advertisers. Or maybe they don't approve of that language.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||ekpollard||5/5/10 2:53 PM|
Please, please, PLEASE change it back. Please! Or have an option for people to choose 'old-school' style search page format.
This change hurts! Change hurts, because I'm on Google all the time and I know what to look for unconsciously! This is how the human brain works! Now I'm all confused-- it's taken me years to get used to the way it is.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Takibuna||5/5/10 4:29 PM|
Please give us the option to get rid of those redundant links on the side. Those are very distracting to me and take away from the search results I'm trying to focus on. I understand if you want to update the look, but it bothers me a lot when I can't customize things back to how they once were. A lot of people hate format changes on any website, and I fondly remember when Gmail gave its users the chance to go back to an older format.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||JB68||5/5/10 4:35 PM|
It does suck really bad
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||raderjeff||5/5/10 4:47 PM|
if you don't like the new layout, you won't like Bing. It is exactly the same. It's like Google admitting that they think Bing is better. I don't like Bing - I don't like their results and I don't like their layout. If Google likes Bing so much they should just use it, don't subject Google users to it as well.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Shane1163||5/5/10 8:45 PM|
google has gotten so stupid and pathetic lately.. screwing around and fu*king things up when they don't have to, and "fixing" things that aren't broken! And for some stupid reason they took the shadowing off behind the logo! That gave it depth, now it just looks FLAT! WTF.. There was NOTHING wrong with it before.. I would THINK google would have SO much more other things to work on then pointlessly changing the look of everything and youtube all the time!! guess they have more time on their hands then we think.. wow
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Shane1163||5/5/10 8:47 PM|
ekpollard pretty much nailed it!! having to relearn everything that you just know what to do and how to use it without thinking about it.. now you have to think about it! like walking into a store you know exactly where everything is, then they go and move half the stuff around and have to go refind everything again and get use to where everything is relocated! then, as soon as you get used to where everything is, then move everything around again!!
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Siofor_you||5/5/10 9:48 PM|
For the first time in many, many years I've changed my home button to Alta Vista. I was a total Google customer, mail, home, search, Google voice, Wave and more. Proud to promote your cause, even considering a Droid phone to support you.
I'll check back from time to time to see if you fixed the format change. It's not too late for Google to fail and I think this was a huge mistake. You're getting in our face now like the noise on TV and I'll bet the woman that thought this was a great idea doesn’t have the common sense to fix it.
I hope enough people are like me and go elsewhere. You've sounded the warning bell that your turning out just like everyone else. I'm seriously disappointed.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Joel Cuerrier||5/5/10 10:41 PM|
I also dislike this change.
Google is a staple, many sites do these mistakes of trying to "improve" their functions and ending up making things worst. Think of AllMusic/Movie and PhotoBucket. It use to be simple and plain, they went all out to implement all sorts of new configurations and it ruined them.
iMDB mostly stayed the same for over a decade, moderately changing some aspects of their site. That's why people continue to visit it in such high numbers. It found its format and stuck with it.
It's a little like how the remote control turned out to need a manual to operate, because some marketing folks figured people wanted all these options. When 95% of the public do not use them at all.
Google, stick to the Volume and Channel buttons... As the saying goes "Keep it simple, stupid".
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Yonatán||5/6/10 5:59 AM|
I'm not sure what Google was trying to accomplish here, but if it's making it harder for someone to search for something you guys got it. Come on this is not fb where stuff is everywhere and formats get changed every two months, this should be as simple and straighforward as possible just like the way it used to be.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Shane1163||5/6/10 7:34 AM|
google is worse then facebook! facebook constantly changes their crap every little bit, and makes everyone angry at them, and they don't care and the leave it and just keep changing!! but google & youtube are actually worse I think!
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||RamJech||5/6/10 11:01 AM|
This change is awful!!! not helpful at all. It waste space, offend the sight looking like something we don't use (like Bing), its totally distracting. I'm 100% Google customer but if this continue like this it will be time to see new horizons.
Give us the oportunity to use OUR REAL CLASSIC VIEW, let the option to hide that useless sidebar.
I don't want add-ons, or answers like use the mobile site if you want simplicity, I have a 21" screen not a mobile.
Lets face it we are in love with the SIMPLICITY of OUR old Google look and feel, and we want it back.

|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Mumol||5/6/10 12:59 PM|
i cannot even imagine what are you thinking google people O.O
usually you are inventive, and apply very good ideas, but since i saw the webspaces templates, being so :P i feel this coming. The old look and feel was simple but usefull, like a comfortable numb, the image search it's offensive and reminds me the bad days of my school days... it's like google trying to spit on my face every bad feeling i could have.
usually i am not so exquisite in the look and feel, but with google it's different because it was perfect in the original desing... now... internet will never be the same again.
bye... ¿it's this the dusk of an era?, ¿it's this the dawn of supreme darkness?, ¿it's evil trying to prove that freedom it's impossible?... O.O
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Remedy7||5/6/10 1:41 PM|
We're all happy you like the company kool-aid, Rubie, but how about working towards what Google's users want instead of linking to propaganda.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||mchav83||5/6/10 2:55 PM|
I also vote to change it back. However, it would be great if you could provide a settings option to use the old search response format window.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||evemurry||5/6/10 4:25 PM|
This isn't an answer. It's a rant, as there doesn't seem to be any other way of actually contacting Google to complain about this awful layout change.
For the last ten years I have had Google as my Home Page on every computer I have ever used. It was near-perfect for me – simple, clear and useful and I never even considered using another search engine (even though I am old enough to remember AltaVista, which was my first search engine of choice – I abandoned it happily for the vastly superior Google). Well, it's not superior any more!
This is a "New Coke" situation if ever I saw one – change for the sake of change. It wasn't broke and you haven't fixed it! You took a great product and ruined it. I await the return of "Classic Google".
Still, Rubie is happy.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||qtena||5/6/10 7:23 PM|
Dear fellow sufferers,
Time to move on...
Google Search as we knew it is gone. If they are so far off to advertise this uninventive, dysfunctional act of mediocrity as an improvement, people with brains have left the Google building.
Your answers here just add insult to injury.
Cheers, baba, tulalalah

I really hope they're pulling the changing coke's flavor maneuver but I kinda' think that's optimistic.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||tangyorangesour||5/7/10 6:32 AM|
First, I don't like the appearing act of the top menu as we sweep into the page. Wonder whats that for? Really ? What is it for ?
Second: The new formula for refining search based on what you warehoused for the past three years via your three products doesn't help. Your moto was - simplicity - not jump a hurdle to reach the simplicity.
Is if efficient? No, why so? Because it makes no sense. The information is still the same. You don't reduce the number of useless sites that means nothing to the search keywords. It only trims the excess of all that is no use in a proper format. I wish being the best in the game as you all like to call it, better those wonderful minds to find a way to make really efficient bonding search results - how about some natural language processing?
Not always integrations works fine, did I miss something or is it the fact there were specialized options to search the relevant options your portray on the left side?
You have pasted the advanced search features well some of it and pasted in on the left side! Is there anyway this new interface can guarantee that when a the site (visited) already has been updated and I click on "not yet visited" will show the already visited site based on my search query? if so will it highlight it? with neons so i can follow it better!!
Perhaps rather than posting the propaganda behind this earth shattering development how about some straight answers for the consumers? of do you plan to make a new site altogether to get that going.

|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||stevebadger||5/9/10 3:04 AM|
rubie well done for posting the links, why did you do that? as if you read all the comments, people hate the new look and have made that clear, on both this site and that of the news link you posted, what we would say in uk as a bit of a daft thing to do!
everybody is saying the same thing, old, clear, concise look is what made google number 1, now you are copying the lesser search engines we didnt like, what poor buisness sense, why not get the manager or director who allowed this poor move to be emailed, his name is?
i wont blame the web geak who did this, as all he wants to do is play, but for goodness sake, a buisness decsion, should ask the questions, do we need to, will it be better for all (not just google) will people like it?
change back, or give choice, how hard can that be?
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||plummy72||5/10/10 2:44 PM|
TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE COMMENTS RE NEW GOOGLE WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING, I THINK WITH BING TRYING TO EDGE IT'S WAY INTO THE SEARCH ENGINE MARKET THEY HAVE MADE A BIG MISTAKE, GET RID IT IT WE DONT NEED IT, GOOGLE WAS MY FAV SEARCH ENGINE.
WHY CAN'T I TELL GOOGLE VIA EMAIL HOW MUCH I HATE IT, TYPICAL NOWAYS LARGE COMPANIES HIDING UNCONTACTABE GRRRRR
THE PEOPLE ARE ANGRY LISTEN UP
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Remedy7||5/11/10 8:23 PM|
From the Google Corporate page:
Above all, a well-designed Google product is useful in daily life. [...]It doesn't strong-arm people to use features they don't want.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||peoplepeople||5/12/10 12:33 PM|
As many of your other CUSTOMERS have said, I hate this new format, and consequently it makes me hate using Google now. I used google because its functionality was better than BING's and other CRAPPY search engines. Now you are all the same to me. Either YOU change your search engine or I change mine... At the very least, give us an option.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||rabbitkillrun||5/12/10 1:04 PM|
The thing that made Google search so popular was its plain simplicity. Now, you've gone and ruined that by copying Bing, minus the pretty pictures and colours.
Also, the logo change is horrible. It may only be removing a shadow, but it looks much worse; it makes the page look flat, and it now merges in with the rest of this new clutter, rather than standing above it.
The same goes for Youtube. But then, you haven't made a single good change since you bought the site.
And just to top things off, you say things such as what Remedy7 posted above:
From the Google Corporate page:Seriously Google, get your act together, or people will find change search engines. At the moment, it is the same as Bing, but it looks as if all images and styles have been removed, bar the logo.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||kasrock||5/13/10 11:04 AM|
Horrible change from the old format. I am switching to Bing and hope you folks get it right the next time...
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||nupanick||5/24/10 8:13 AM|
What is it with you people? I've heard this same complaint about facebook, deviantart, youtube, and pretty much every social networking site that updates its layout. Why change the layout? It's actually really simple. This point is so important I'd say it huge red letters (but I can't, because if I could then someone would have made an angry post consisting entirely of them):
It's easier for new users to learn.
Wait, stop. Put down the pitchforks and listen a moment. Think about that sentence.
It's easier for new users to learn.
Ever try to teach your tech-challenged grandpa how to navigate the internet? Often times people don't even read the small text at the top and bottom of the page, so they wouldn't know there was a book search or a document writer without those side-icons. Google is basically making an interface for people who don't think they know how to use computers. If it looks a bit like Bing, well, google gotta compete if it wants to keep the "computer illiterate" market under its thumb.
Hold on, I know what you're thinking now because you've all said it already: "But now I have to relearn it!"
Yes. Yes you do. And it won't take long because you already know the basic layout of things, there's just one more column added and a prettier search bar. Expect more changes as google moves gradually into a new layout, never changing it so much at once that the old users can't work out where things are. That's what I'd do in their situation. Those of you who are threatening to stop using Google because of the interface change, I'd ask you to reconsider, simply because that's kinda an immature move that highlights the internet's reactionist mentality.
That being said... I wouldn't mind a setting to remove or minimize the sidebar. So that the people who do read the small words get the advantage of a more efficient use of screen space. That sidebar takes up a lot of real estate on small monitors.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Remedy7||5/24/10 8:39 AM|
I'm skeptical about the notion that it is easier to learn, but if you had read through this thread, you would realize most of us are simply asking for the option to hide it. Different strokes for different folks. We get that. We just don't think think these options should be imposed on everyone. Googel used to have a Hide Options button on the left. It shouldn't be too hard to implement into this layout.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||cillann||6/10/10 9:46 AM|
Time to find a new search engine. Google just ruined the best thing it had over every other engine.
Stupid, stupid move.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||teatimecrumpet||6/28/11 9:04 PM|
Did Bing Buy out google?....who is your brand manager? They should be fired. Google is #1 for a reason--it's simplicity. From the very beginning. Orange accents? Hey how about next revision you guys clone yahoo?
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||BnastyProduce||7/1/11 8:01 PM|
Google had a great thing going. Simple format. All these updates (instant, annoying banners, lame formats) are the google staff getting bored. They want to keep their job and make themselves useful... so they imbellish and do all sorts of unneccessary things to make their jobs useful, and the owners of google and higher-ups are so disconnected they really have no control or interest in thier product. This is why we need salary caps in america.
|Re: Why did you change the Google format?||Robabarr||8/9/11 7:21 PM|
Yes go back! This is the second time you have done this.. I do not like scrolling down pages to see my news.. the old format was much better viewing especially on my phone... This sucks! Give us an option to change back!!

The Search forum (as well as other Google Help Forums) has a long history of encouraging users to post their feedback about issues related to Google.
I see nothing in this thread that warrants referring to the users here as "trolls." On top of that, there is never any reason for anyone to make derogatory comments [i.e. "You're all starting to sound like an old lady with a wet panty."]
