|Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||cablecommercials||6/2/10 12:09 AM|
I don't keep up with the changes etc. I just use the embedded google search bar in Safari. But I did go to Googles homepage and noticed it's different now.
Starting about a week ago I can't find relevant items like I used to be able to find immediately. This isn't just a one time deal either. It's over the last week.
For instance today I ran a search about an a specific error message I was receiving in Final Cut Pro 7 (which is fairly new). All the top search results we're totally off topic results and the first one was from 2003!! The only one that helped was deep on the second page and it was from an Apple forum yesterday.
I'm seeing this with most of my search results. It's like Google broke overnight. Is there something going on? For the first time EVER i used a different search engine today.
Weird. It's always been so precise. It just sucks now.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||mooredc54||6/2/10 2:38 AM|
No one seems to like to provide concrete examples.
Did you include the words "Final Cut Pro 7" with the error code? Did your restrict results to last year?

|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||wonderwonder||6/4/10 3:36 PM|
No, no one likes to provide concrete examples. Because google is such a part of the background of our lives, that we usually don't stop to ponder the specific concrete examples of it. Can I tell you exactly when it started returning pages of completely irrelevant hits? No. But I can tell you it sure does that now. Can I give you a specific search I've conducted this past week that was absolutely futile? No. But I can tell you about the frustration I was left with.
Go ahead and reply with your condescendingly patronizing remarks, Mister Top Contributor, and tell me that because I cannot quantify the problems they don't exist. But I can tell you, with absolute certainty, that something has changed. Google searches are not as smart as they used to be. Google no longer understands that search terms are typed in a certain order because that word order has meaning. Instead, I am offered results that only contain half the words I'm looking for. I am offered results with the word order switched and the meaning lost. I have to put all my search terms in quotes and include lots of minus signs followed by the irrelevant words I don't want to appear in the results any longer. Sure, you're trying to make things more "user friendly." It seems that when you pander to the idiot public, you become idiotic.
For the first time in, I don't know, eight years, I had to use a different search engine. Remember when PC Magazine said google had "an uncanny knack for returning extremely relevant results"? That's all you can do now is remember, because ain't nobody gonna be saying that about you anymore.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||wwwallyh||6/4/10 3:42 PM|
I have always used the philosophy that most searches require 8 or more refinements to assure an adequate search result if your query is sincere.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||pickanydamnname||6/6/10 2:36 AM|
If your search requires 8 or more refinements you are doing something massively wrong. I've generally been able to find exactly what I was looking for on the first try without any refinement needed, but lately it has been taking more effort because like others have stated google's results are becoming less useful/relevant. Those of us that are capable of actually typing a coherent search phrase never used to have any trouble find anything. People who need ridiculous levels of refinement are usually starting with overly broad search terms to begin with and only need the refinement because they were somehow incapable of being specific from the start.
You guys can continue to talk down to everyone that points out the decline, but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It just makes you look like silly fanboys that can't admit to a flaw in that which you love so much. Personally, if it takes you 8 or more refinements to get an adequate search result, I don't think you are in any position to be giving advice on how to use a search engine. You should spend your time figuring out why you are so poor at searching that you need 8 or more refinements instead.
FYI, I've never used anything besides words in the basic search box for searching. No modifiers, advanced search, etc has ever been needed, so save any kind of excuses about how "normal" people don't have the ability to achieve the same results for someone else.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||Wireless P. Jones||6/16/10 11:59 PM|
Yeah I have to agree with Pickanydamnname....I remember when I could just type in a word or two and find exactly what I was looking for. Now you have to be specific wit ~ * " " etc. Bottom line is this...ITS ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR..so google has the name and has basically cornered the search engine market so to speak. The reason we can't find anything relevant when we search is because Google is over run with Ad's...everything is MONEY, MONEY, MONEY now a days...it's like, aren't all of you guys rich by now..geez, how much money could one man need....at least offer a 100% Ad free version for those that care...
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||aaanativearts||8/16/10 2:21 PM|
I used to be able to find just about anything by surrounding the query with quotes, like "native american flag" But now 999 searches out of 1,000 it says there is no exact match. Yet, I know there are matches, because I eventually find them. But instead of going straight to them, it says there are no matches and gives me results without the quotes, which are mostly WAAAY off target.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||wwwallyh||8/16/10 2:28 PM|
I get i,500,000 results for "native american flag"
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||wwwallyh||8/16/10 2:30 PM|
But sadly the truth is there never was a native american flag
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||rprastein||8/16/10 6:09 PM|
This has been going on for a lot longer than just since June. It's one thing after another. Google no longer searches for what I tell it to search for, it searches for what it thinks I really meant to tell it to search for. I'm with pickanydamnname 100%. I used to be able to simply type in a search phrase, and get a few, or a dozen, or exactly one hit that was exactly what I was looking for. Now, I type in the search phrase, and I get page after page of marginally relevant or completely irrelevant garbage, topped off with the admonition, "didn't you really mean something else?"
The terms I put in my query aren't even in half of the pages returned, and since for some reason my employer blocks the google cached pages that highlight the search terms and tell you which ones they decided to ignore, I waste an inordinate amount of time scanning the page looking for a term that isn't even there, trying to figure out what on earth made google think this page had anything to do with my query.
As anyone else who's been doing this for 15-20 years or more will remember, that was the original problem with the search engines Google competed so successfully against - you'd type in some words, and they would (at best) do a big "OR" on your search terms, or worse, automatically generalize from the past tense of a verb to all words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs - you name it) that had the same root or matched a "soundalike" patternmatcher, generating page after page of garbage. They made it still worse back then by sorting them by who paid the most money, but still, the main problem was volume of irrelevant results. Google distinguished itself by assuming that the searcher knew what he or she wanted, and starting from that. The page ranks based on references from other highly ranked pages were an *enhancement,* that allowed them to sort the results better. They were not a *substitute* for searching based on the query search terms.
I have sought the google feedback mechanisms on several occasions with specific searches. It's always hard to find those mechanisms, and when I have succeeded in doing so, I have been disappointed to not receive any response whatsoever.
If anyone has another search engine to recommend, I'm all ears, because I'm really sick of this.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||aaanativearts||1/15/11 8:43 PM|
I can't find anything on Google anymore, either. Used to be able to just enclose the query in double quote marks and find just about anything. Now 90% of quoted queries have zero results, and without quotes they aren't even close to relevant. Same with using + signs, which should return results with all the words in the query. Instead it says it can't find any and shows other stuff you didn't ask for.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||krdaughtry||1/21/11 11:34 AM|
I feel the same way as all of the previous people in this post. Even though I can not tell you exact differences, I am unable to find relevance in my google searches anymore. Hopefully this changes back. Starting to lose a little confidence in google, when before I would resolve to state that if google was doing it, that was the way to go. Now I am having trouble keeping that same confidence.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||AleG||1/22/11 4:11 AM|
I think it's coming from Google's brilliant idea of showing results they assume you want to see, instead of the results you typed for. For example, I was looking for information about an Inon S-2000 strobe, and the utterly useless results were littered with the highlighted INs, and ONs, the fact that I wrote INON as the search word seems to be of no consequence whatsoever.
Another example, I searched "How to remove Trending Yahoo" in Google, no useful results in the first page, the first result had the words used by Google bolded all over a paragraph, a Yahoo here, a REMOVE over there and a TREND (not "TRENDING" as it should be) somewhere else, completely disconnected, it was some sort of article in Yahoo.
I went over the Bing, used the same search query and the very first result was a Yahoo Answers question asking how to remove Trending.
I rest my case.
Now that I've searched for Inon seems that Google keeps track of such things and I search again I get more relevant results, but for first time searches is like trying to ask an almost deaf person for something. "What you said? Amen?", "What was that? I nom-what?" "Can you spell it once more, a bit louder this time!?"
It's just not worth the bother some days.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||TheDixter1||2/7/11 7:42 AM|
I don't think you guys are being complete, and therefore your integrity must be questioned. I use google DAILY with full text, and get what I need. General complaints suck, are worthless, and do nothing to help anyone. Unless you work for Microsoft.
Make a specific complaint with exact text used to enter your query.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||Matt Falcon||3/18/11 5:49 AM|
I've been Googling about 150 queries a day because I LITERALLY cannot find ANY relevant search results anymore. The best I can do is "close enough". In fact, the original query that landed me here was intended to find other people voicing their opinion of how SEO keyword spam landing pages are killing Google and the internet. And they are. Pages, pages, pages and pages, of totally worthless SEO dictionary-spam landing sites. The internet is completely infested with them and Google always puts them at the top.
I've seen this trend steadily continue on its downward path ever since Google released "Google Instant", the most irritating feature I'd ever seen. Since many people I'm sure don't even bother to turn it off, it's probably got Google trying to find ways to cut corners in search CPU efficiency (nevermind the client CPU load of constantly reloading the page after every single keystroke - wtf Google?)... and hence, cutting corners in producing relevant results. It's steadily gone down the crapper and now it's gotten to the point where the internet is becoming a complete headache to use as a whole... I DESPERATELY WANT TO FIND a new search engine. I cannot find anything anymore. Nothing has changed on my end... the internet (Google, you could say) has changed.

I noticed Google search results going to crap too. I stoped using goole search because, first they messed up the perfect image search they once had, then the stupied annoying goolge instant that is always on by default making it real annoying, I know it can be turned off but having to turn it off everytime I clear my history made it too annoying to use google anymore , then there search went to crap. Google was the best search engine in the world, I switched to them in late 2002 and used it untill late 2009 untill they messed it up completly.
Just use Bing search thats what I use now. Bing's image search is as annoying as google's as a matter of fact google ripped bing's image search off. But Bing's search results are as good as google's used to be.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||ButchDeFEO||3/22/11 8:03 PM|
Im actually thinking of deleting my Gmail account too. If google does not want to care anymore about there users and never respond to complaints , then I want nothing at all to do with google anymore.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||willyk||3/25/11 10:30 AM|
I have similar problems/frustration.
However I wonder if there isn't just a lot more garbage on the internet now instead of information content. 10 to 15 years ago most people who posted had content. Now there are a lot of people putting up pages with ads and link lists with all the key words. I think there should be ways to optionally block these if google cared, but it does present problems for those of us who are interested in original content. I'll give Bing a try, but am not optimistic
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||Matt Falcon||3/26/11 7:23 PM|
It's not post content... well, at least, it certainly doesn't help to have a billion spam websites set up with dictionary-generated gibberish posts infused with keywords to try to snag unsuspecting searchers... I hate that so much.
But take a look at this result:
Now, can anyone tell me how that would be related to my query, "dell fn power scroll lock then turns off"? Since I can't specify "grouping" to Google without specifying exact strings, I can't say, for example, "dell [fn+power] [solid scroll lock LED then turns off]", which is the exact term I'm looking for. Since people might discuss things in a billion different combinations, I need to search for phrases they would likely be talking about in the matter. And these terms should be near each other in order to be relevant.
But look at that result, which was about #4 on the first page of discussion results. What the HELL does that have to do with my query?!
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||Lost...||3/27/11 10:16 PM|
Google is a mess these days.
Tonight I was using a different computer than my laptop, which had specific notes and bookmarks. I was looking for a specific Japanese fabric shop in Canberra, Australia (I am in Cali). I used keywords such as:
Japanese fabric, Canberra, Australia
Japanese fabric, Canberra
Japanese fabric, Australia
Japanese cotton fabric, Canberra, Australia
Japanese fabric, Canberra, Australia, indigo
I tried web search, image search an all keywords above.... NOTHING!
I had to wait until I got back to my laptop to look up :http://www.kimoyes.com
That's not all. Frequently I will search for something and find only very large sites like eBay, Amazon, etc., or aggregator content farms (with links to eBay, etc.) are in the top search results - both in web searches, and image searches. Sometimes this goes on for 20+ pages, and Google never finds what I know is out there.
I don't need help finding eBay, Amazon, Walmart, or content farms. These are all huge and often generic or worse useless sites. What is now lost is the diversity, the unique, boutique destinations on the web.
Please, anyone with suggestion of search engines that now perform as google once did... I'm ALL ears!
btw - Google is a royal pain in the ass to find a feedback link to send a direct email. Is it necessary for me to walk in to your office to give you feedback? Are you not as 'wired' communication company?
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||Lost...||3/27/11 10:44 PM|
Image search: antique japanese scroll, tiger, $

Do I have to start a new thread and repost this information?
I'd like a response/explanation.

Well, in Google's <snark> defense </snark>, I found this page by searching in Google on "Google no longer provides relevant search results." I am very frustrated with getting pages of linkfarms, SEOs, and affiliate sites for every phrase I type; and, in the case of more academic searches, page upon page of expensive pay-to-play journal site links.
Even using quotes doesn't give you exact results anymore - Google just ignores what you type in, in favor of its own autistic results, results that are no good. I want a way to shut off these "features" without logging into an account, as I'm usually surfing cookie-less or near to it.
The past week I've been using Yahoo! at home, and I must say it annoys me far less than Google. Thanks for your tips people - I'll give Bing a try now too. I can't believe after using Google almost exclusively since 1998 that I'm about to jump ship. I also am annoyed to death at Google's instant search feature, which makes the page all jumpy and doesn't save my position on the page if i scroll.
And finally, yes, I believe a company as wealthy and large as Google should invest considerably more time and energy and personnel and money into providing human-focused customer service, such as responding to this thread. We all know Google isn't spending its time supporting the Nexus One!

FalconFour put it best. Google has been gamed straight into the ground by SEO keyword spam pages. SEO has effectively ruined web search and, in many ways, the web itself. Now that Google's algorithm seems to be focused on returning results that are "just good enough," rather than what you actually searched for, these SEO pages are just killing the results completely. I would hazard to guess that for most of the searches I do, only one or two results on each page will be relevant. The rest either point to on-the-fly generated SEO pages, dead links, or linkfarm pages that make me click through several more pages to get to the real page that was being listed by Google.
I'm sick of it. The web has basically become useless in the past five years.

Have enjoyed using Google's search engine for about 7 years. Googling was something I was always good at, to the point that friends and family often got me to rummage things out for them.
Now I can spend a solid six hours searching for something and get nowhere.
Searches which produced results just last week completely fail today.
Google is unravelling and unravelling fast. I might come back one day if I hear it has been fixed.

Google is decent at showing results for non commercial terms, but when it comes to ranking business related terms they are losing their ground. I believe it comes from a flawed philosophy at the core of the google mission. They want businesses to be non-competitive and completely non-manipulative. That just doesn't work in competitive environments. Google by trying to over engineer there search system have squeezed out many of the relevant sites for lessor more spammy or irrelevant sites, like grabbing a hand full of sand the harder you squeeze the more sand you lose. look up "online personal loans" as an example www.personalloansmania.com,
All these sites are at best spammy and all are in the top ten. Google may lose a large portion of their market share when people realize the emperor has no clothes:P I never would have believed it possible, but Bing is doing a much better job with their results and they seem more focused on search. After all search is where the money is and the core offering that made Google the confused monster that it is.

If you read this entire thread the answers were 2/3ds down ...the answer is more and more companys that sell nothing to try and make somthing are flooding the net ... if i think globaly about this problem id say that alot of amarican style consumerism and some political motavation are at work here , have you ever herd the rummor about the cia and fbi funding google and you tube and double click and yata yata yata , well its true and directly or indirectly effecting you even now( why eles would you be reading this) google can use plausible diniability by allowing these companys to opperate ,but why are they on the top of serches ,why are websites that sell and do nothing but try and get you to look at thier crap so ifested on the net for years now, why is it that even the largest companys in the world can get booted around in the serch engines by "redirecting sites" we have never heard of goverment legislation about it not a comitee or a senator ? how is this all profitable to google? to amarica ? anyways Im starting to hate google and im prayin to god that some smart as a whip nerd is developing a new serch engine that has integrity and is built for the user and not the abuser .

I just found Yahoo and Bing returning items that were not found on Google - even a dozen pages into the search.
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||Matt Falcon||6/30/11 12:43 PM|
Bing and friends just use the exact same algorithm Google uses, just with a slightly different crawler database. Same type of completely irrelevant results every time.
I've explained in a previous thread the exact method Google uses to search. In a nutshell, strip your query's keywords down to phrases that return an exact result from their keyword-processing databases (completely throwing away any context in the process), then append results from the discarded keywords in your query, and mash the result sets together on your screen. It produces absolute garbage results for more precise queries since Google doesn't provide KEYWORD GROUPING operators (HELLO? Google?! Are you listening?! KEYWORD GROUPING!!!), and what options are we stuck with? Bing, Yahoo, Google... that's it, and every one of them uses the same watered-down algorithm producing the same worthless results.
Every single day, ever since my first post here, and far beyond that, EVERY day I've run Google searches, and Google almost always disappoints, as a rule with few exceptions. Bing and Yahoo almost always produce worse disappointments than Google (I've used Bing/Yahoo for my default search the past few weeks and often end up going to paste my search into Google to find the same disappointment).
The state of search is utterly disgusting right now. Google is busy making new themes and designs for Google (notice the new search layout?), but doing ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NOTHING to improve the quality of search itself.

same thing happening to me just for the last month!! I used to swear by google as even all the randomist things i would google it found --- now anything i type into the search whether it's one word, or many words the results are completely un-related! Driving me crazy, i hate using other search engines but i think i may need to change.

Why hasn't Google responded to these inquiries yet?
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||aswold111||8/22/11 9:04 PM|
From what I see, pay per click seems to rule google now, if you pay google to display your site it will show anything that even has one word in your search you are searching for before an unpaid answer will be displayed, so for general questions google has become irrelevant I have tried to find other good sites but most of them a are *powered by google* I use to rave that anything you want to know just google it, now it is rare for me to find the answer to anything, unless I want to buy something it should be called E-Google just one massing online store!!!!!!!!!!

I know for a fact that Clive Stafford Clark (lawyer to a number of GITMO inmates) has been in the news quite a lot lately... and I used to be able to find the news articles about him - just by typing his name into the news search... now it's producing BS.... not cool
|Re: Why can't I find anything on Google anymore?||this is a joke||9/15/11 4:17 PM|
I just stumbled across this thread as I've been having problems finding anything with google lately too...and it seems this problem has been going on for a while.
I seem to get totally unrelated responses to pretty specific requests and the more specific my request become the fewer results are returned.....but all still irrelevent.
Pages and pages of search results seemingly ignoring what I have queried all together.
It got to a point where I was being so specific that I only got 2 responses...both still off topic...incredible.

GOOGLE SEARCH RIP?
If Google does not admit that it has a serious problem, the problem will only get worse. Ultimately PRIDE will be the downfall of any empire! Google has grown to fast and is outgrowing it'self. Google processors cannot keep up with the increased information. It will without question burn it'self out soon! This giant will come down to. At best you can still use your website as a connection or business card. Unless your paying Google to advertise your website don't be surprised if your website does not show up in the search results. Google is all about advertising. It has become greedy and is now become an irrelevant search engine.

I've been feeling this pain for many many years. Search engines used to give useful results but then the internet got loaded with more and more junk and people looking for ways to scam money. It's hard to say if the search engines just can't keep their technology up to filter out all the BS, gave up, or don't care. Search engines are just fine if the information (good or bad) has already been discovered by many people. Often I'm looking for information that is only found a handful of resources on the web. This is why I got involved in a project that allows people to direct their search to websites that are known to have useful information for the subject they are searching about. It's called insitefo.com. It would be great if people like you checked it out and let the team know what they think. It was initially built for people like you and me that struggle constantly trying to find stuff so your opinions are greatly welcome.

Read through all the complaints and my sentiments are much the same. Major let down Google. :/ I'm tired of seeing results for the same content listed on sixty different pages with little and sometimes no relation to my search every time that I search.

I have a perfect example if you would like to try it.
"windows 8 pro full version prices in £"
Or if you ever dare to try it with the quotes around the search, you no longer have a chance at finding anything of any use unless it is porn!. What happened to the web? As soon as this social media kicked off, the windows way became double pants, the Apple way is over a barrel with "I" tunez and the mac, granted it' is better than going for the "Compatible" Windoze, but if you cannot give the purchased media from ITunez to another person, you do not own what you paid for! After that, it was advert this and spam email google had to integrate so much data in one go, that it just lost the vision of the nature of the what the web was meant for...to get what you want with little or no MICKEY MOUSE.... True? Oh unless you have 8 monitors to give them enough chance to find a valid result on the first page! Too many software vendors pedal stuff that only the writers understand and they are fragmented up, so the big picture is lost as it is not COST EFFECTIVE to provide the full picture as they want your dosh, but you aint getting what you thought as they cannot be commercially ar55ed
I am not having a direct bash at either OS's...They both went uber commercial and bang, A good idea was Faffed up because of money and commerce. Good for the people who do not leave the house to get purchases due to financial climate or couch potatoe, but absolutely cr4p otherwise. They should keep sales away from searches, so you get Market and then the web....ban one from the other including all spam and the other leeching methods of getting your money or ID! My view I guess.
I have no Idea why explorer, crome and fox (The 3 blind mice) have got even more long-bod of late, but I have given up bothering unless really necessary.
I even deleted myself from the web to see if my virtual profile was the cause...true the adverts and that became random and light for a week, but soon was as sh1t3 as ever and I rebuilt the pc...still as lazy and inaccurate as before...they are getting there, but I lost the will to wait for them to get the finger out.
The only thing they ever evolve for is the pocket and if that is the only drive, we all may as well bend over and get mugged off yet again guys and gals. The commercial industry has found a new way to get your money and give you kack for your efforts....I may sound rediculously socialist here, but if money is leaving joe-public with this soggy excuse, even when we do want to know how to help ourselves, they aint listening as they already have your hard earned money, so it is not going to change unless you start writing your own OS or have another .....50 years on your clock to find out how if they ever care about what we truely expect for our money in a commercial utopia!

The only time I get any results (define results: what I expect to find after using the internet since 1990) is when I type "-ehow.com" to make sure stupid ehow does not return any results. The adsense kills true search options as I have paid Google to put adsense and my site came up when i looked for data in zone.
Example: So now I am looking for query, "php recipe cook book, food" search and came up with three results repeated over and over and over and over and over again. There has to be thousands of results/urls with php scripts and the [key]words recipe or food... but NOOOOOO google only finds (define finds: results that have working urls inside of link) three, relevant, that are all bogus pay for and/or download links do not work. CRAP CRAP CRAP. I want quality and a decent quantity. Not some lame results that I already have seen a thousand times.
Maybe Googal needs to find a better way to slate their crawler data. It is not relevant over 80 percent of the time... and I do a lot of searching. some businesses and some standard issue queries like html color codes or ge capital, for example, come up fine and I am satisfied with the results (even though the same guys---like w3c and tizag---pop up). But most anything that is even relatively obscure or innate is not present or is so thin that you wonder if google is web crawling for these articles at all.
