I am checking out the new Health tab "Index Status" that was announced today

I am seeing Google has a total index of 9760 but my sitemap has 1324 pages.

What could cause the huge number? Will we have transparency in seeing the reason for this? I have blocked the pages that I don't want indexed in my robots.txt

I have no errors or duplicates when I crawl with screaming frog seo - and I have 0 errors with seomoz…

Suggestion on how I can research this large number?

Can you post the site URL? Use a URL shortener if you want.

Just to add that Google can find URLs that are not necessarily in the sitemaps, for example from links, or by deep-crawling HTML forms, or even from JavaScript.
Make sure that your site has correct 404 (Not Found) HTTP status for non-existing URLs, for Googlebot to know which URLs are incorrect from broken links.
