who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site sam peeps 3/1/12 1:26 AM
I have read the FAQs and checked for similar issues: YES
My site's URL www.abfab.co.uk is:

In recent weeks, we have seen a drop in positions for AbFab.co.uk under terms such as ‘Fancy Dress’, ‘Halloween Fancy Dress’, ‘Fancy Dress Costumes’ and ‘Fancy Dress Outfits’.

Upon putting in a reconsideration request to Google, we had a response as the following:

“Thank you for your request.

We’ve reviewed your site and we believe that some or all of your pages still violate our quality guidelines, which can be found here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769#3. These guidelines outline illicit practices which may lead Google to take action on a site in order to keep webspam out of search results. In addition to this email, you may also receive a notification in Webmaster Tools regarding the outcome of your reconsideration request.

Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes. Here are a couple of articles describing these techniques:

Buying links to pass PageRank

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66736

Link schemes

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66356

To illustrate how these articles could apply to you, here are examples of pages that contain inorganic links to your site:

http://www.pumpkinfancydress.co.uk/was-charlie-browns-halloween-costume-in-the-great-pumpkin-a-metaphor-for-the-holy-ghost.html

http://moulin-rouge-fancy-dress.co.uk/tag/showgirl/

To find more links to your site, you can download a list in Webmaster Tools by doing the following:

1. Click on your site at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

2. Click on "Your site on the web" and then "Links to your site."

3. Under "Who links the most," click "More."

4. At the bottom of the page, click on "Download more sample links."

Please correct or remove all content that is outside our quality guidelines. You might consider reaching out to the webmasters of the sites with the inorganic links on them. For advice on how to go about contacting them, read http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=9109.

Once you have updated your site, reply to this email noting the specific changes you made. Only after there has been a significant decrease in unnatural linking will we consider reviewing your reconsideration request again. If there are still links that you could not remove, we will look for an explanation of why you were unable to do so.

If you’d like more specific advice for your site, consider posting in our Webmaster Help Forum, where a community of webmasters may be able to help you. You can post to the Forum by visiting the following link: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters?hl=en.

Sincerely,

The Google Search Quality Team”

Upon further investigation in Webmaster Tools, there is a clear pattern of websites all owned by Marek Sanders, along the lines of the two above. The list of these is:

URL Links Pointing To Keyphrase IP Addres Registrant

Also these links are showing up in the web master tools -   updowner.com  6,149 Links also Linksmatch.com 4.250 Links

Please Can Anyone Offer Us Any Help, We have not bought these liks i truly don't know how they got there but we need to get them removed we have tried all the obvious things like emailing them and get retuned undelivered emails.

Thanks

I have linked from updowner and they dont affect me. Many spam sites link and you cant help that.

The email concerns spam links which you have had a hand in creating and given you some examples.

Also - the hidden spam text on the page when you click 'read more' is not very good.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site ѕquibble 3/2/12 4:49 AM
You still have the hidden spam text on your site ? I understand that it is not relating to the message regarding the spammy links - but I would remove it all the same. It is not good.

I have had trouble with this website you could be too there are Thousands of websites being scraped by updowner.com Updownerbot is web crawling bot (sometimes also called a "spider"). Crawling is the process by which updowner.com

"google is seeing your scraped content on another site"

This website is now in the top10 of the world because its opening the worlds (thousands) of website in frames! Using scraped content in frames links to images on our sites and our Bandwidth. I only found this out as my website like so many others went dead  most
people look to their server or webhosts. They need to look in their backlinks from this company I had  8,888 yesterday 9958 today! (webmasters tools)

It has thousands of pages containing 2inch frames showing scraped content from websites very badly. They are using everyones bandwidth and choking the Internet.

1 page is shown in 300 different frames on different pages. I am sure a lot more people will be complaining when they realise what is happenning. sample updowner.com/1/e/wedding

Block the address in robots.txt (no use at all)
for updowner.com
updowner IP : 94.75.198.206

I have notified their host, (via support.internet.bs)eventually they said they have removed all! Funny thing is I now have 10735 backlinks from this site! 9still showing in google
you can get the email if you look up the company on whois but something needs to be done.

The worst of it is that I reported it to google and now I am blocked.
Google seem to care about minor duplications on our web sites what about duplications of 100000's on updowners of our sites.

updowner is not hurting your site.  If you have issues, check the site or your link schemes.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Keefbeef 3/26/12 3:23 AM
I too have a problem with updowner. You cannot say that this site is not harming mine as I have had an 'unnatural link building' detected message from Google and it is due to links from updowner. I have not authorised links from this site and have sent them a message via the contact form on their site to remove the links to my site. As someone has previously said it looks like they have 'scraped' my site and put the contect (mainly links) of my site pages on theirs in a frame. The Whois data for them does not give an email address to contact.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site webado 3/26/12 6:07 AM
The message you have is not because of updowner links. It would be concerning other unnatural incoming links, and you have it because Google suspects you are involved in the creation of those unnatural incoming links.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Geminineil 4/8/12 10:26 AM
Hi Webado.. I too am having several thousand backlinks from updowner and have received a notification from Google.. but not saying where "unnatrual" links are coing from.. how do I find out where the links are in order to try to remove them?

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site webado 4/8/12 11:29 AM
The unnatural links would not be those form updowner, Gogole already knows it's a crap site and what they do and how and thus ignores them altogetehr. I have them too and I have no message of unnatural links.

It must be others - think hard: link exchanges, link swaps, web rings, paid links, blog/forum posts with links in them especially if on junk blogs/forums with unrelated material, paid links (any SEOs involved?).
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Keefbeef 4/8/12 1:14 PM
Hi Would links from forum posts linked to your own name be a problem?
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site webado 4/8/12 1:40 PM
Very likely.

If you've posted a lot in some forums that don't add rel="nofollow" to outgoing links,  in particualr if your post/signature/profile is of a self-promotional nature, then those are unnatural links.

Prudent forum administrators who run a good forum protect against spam by cofiguring their forum to add rel="nofollow" to all or most outgoing links, in particular signatures and member profiles.

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Keefbeef 4/9/12 3:33 AM
Thanks for the info. Well, these forum links are showing in Webmasters Tools so I presume you are right about the nofollow. What is the action to take: Remove the links from my signature, which removes them from all posts. If I do this will they eventually drop out of google?
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site webado 4/9/12 9:45 AM
If they are nofollowed then they are not a problem. View source code for some of yrou posts and see how the link is presented. If you don't see a rel="nfollow" then you should remove the link from your signature.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site I_Love_Bots 5/8/12 9:08 AM
I investigated this a little bit, as this site has shown up in my google webmasters. Despite the assurances of the people in this thread--I would rather not have those links to me. I think there is a strong argument for a DMCA takedown notice here. They grab our screenshot and text from our site and then display it on their site. That's potentially copyright infringement. The problem is that Updowner is well hidden, and whom do you send the DMCA notice to? The hosting company is LeaseWeb, based in the Netherlands--despite their size, they do not maintain contact information with the US copyright office to receive DMCA notices. And Updowner themselves have registered the domain through an entity in Panama.

Sounds like a total scam up and down, ideally google should just de-index the whole thing.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Geminineil 5/8/12 9:24 AM
You can register for free with updowner.com and request your website links are not displayed. Alternatively search on the website for a contact email address and email them reqyesting removal. I believe they are quite good at removing links. They removed mine!
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site SteveBBQ 5/12/12 12:56 AM
I had registered http://www.onlinebingoreviewer.com to block updowner but I have to wait 48hrs ?  I Wished google would remove this site instantly, IMO this is just an example that google must have ties/benefits from UD any other site would be removed from the SE !!
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site RayFoucher 5/16/12 1:43 PM
I also registered with updowner.com and blocked them from my sites - it was easy to do. Hopefully, Google picks up on it soon.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site eConsultancy 5/17/12 12:34 AM
Is anybody get success to remove site from updowner.com?
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 5/17/12 1:33 PM
I would  NEVER register with them. You have to put a verification code on your site so they know you own the websites. Just take a look at the registration page:

http://www.updowner.com/user-register

Come on people, if they write: "After completing the registration process you will be able to block your website from showing on updowner.com or edit some of your domain details. " under their registration form you have to run far away from them and certainly don't install any tracking code they give you.

I have this in my .htaccess:

deny from 94.75.198.206 (which is I believe (one of) their IP adress)
deny from updowner.com (not sure if this will work...)
deny from 94.75.233.34 (not sure if its also from updowner but a scrapers IP anyway so you can't go wrong here)

Some say they don't do any harm. Maybe so, but if you have stats, you'll notice that ZERO visitors on your website came through updowner.

Block them.

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Geminineil 5/17/12 1:38 PM
I believe that they also have a contact email address on their website and will remove content after an email requesting removal.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 5/17/12 2:09 PM
well that wouldn't hurt to try I guess

http://www.updowner.com/faq#q7 i found this FAQ on updowners site, seems they do obey the robot text file, i just set a "User-agent: Updownerbot
Disallow: /" to my robot text. Not sure if it works but worth a try, since this information came from them. I additional send them a Mail with removal request
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site diyappreview 5/26/12 1:01 PM
can anyone post their email address?  I don't want to register on their site.  It sounds like a scam.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Geminineil 5/26/12 1:04 PM
I can confirm that they do remove links to your website. Their contact form on their website at http://www.updowner.com/contact
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 5/27/12 7:18 AM
I just requested throught the contact form to remove my links, I'll post here again what happens.

In webmaster tools, Updowner is the one with the most links to my website, but I've looked in my stats and ZERO visitors came through updowner. Reason enough to block updowner:

User-agent: Updownerbot
Disallow: /

....and contact them to remove the links to your site.

Already got a message from them:

Hello,

your site and all links to it have been removed from updowner.com listing.

Regards,
updowner.com team

I checked (search on Google with: site:updowner.com yourdomain.com) and indeed they are gone, only cache left from Google.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site diyappreview 5/28/12 11:42 AM

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site navneet kumar 5/29/12 4:49 AM
Thanks so mouch for solution,

Really updonwer.com is very harmful, because it generate so many irrelevant links.. and these  days Google run their Penguin-Update..

Why the people make these site...
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 5/29/12 5:17 AM
well they make it because they want to make a buck ;-) so they make a metasearch engine and collect data from other engines and they have their own spiders, all automatically, and put some banners and ads there in the hope some lost soul would click on them.

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 5/29/12 5:19 AM
I don't think they are harmful though... I am just annoyed that they use my content without me being notified. And that I get zero visitors from their site.

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 6/15/12 5:07 AM

If you choose your site not to be accessible for updowner bot - please
block our robot in your robots.txt file.

For people not familiar with this: open (or make a new file) robots.txt and copy paste the following:

User-agent: Updownerbot
Disallow: /

...and upload to your server where your index file is.

MIND: this will NOT remove already scraped content from updowner
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Cookehouse 6/15/12 8:42 AM
Thank you Bart,

I have just emailed you via your contact form and add the script to our robots.txt.

I will eagerly watch out for the removal of my website www.carolinecooke.com from updowner and report back on this thread for others to see.

Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site Cookehouse 6/18/12 1:46 AM
18/06/12

I'm pleased to report that UpDowner have removed all trace of my site as I requested.

Many thanks Bart.
Re: who are updowner.com and how do i remove the links they had added to my site doesntmatter2 6/18/12 2:42 AM
Are you talking about carolinecooke dot com? I see, not even cached pages in Google. Thats almost impossible.... and strange.

FYI people who are not familiar on how to check if your sites are (still) on updowner pages, type this in Google:

site:updowner dot com yoursite dot com (replace dot with a real one ;)

I had one of my sites removed months ago and got that confirmed, but updowner pages which refer to this site are STILL visible in Google SERPs and STILL visible in the webmaster tools.  It looks like updowner put a stop to indexing some pages so they still have 'content' in the SERPs?  But if you click on them all references to my site are gone. Have to investigate more, maybe get in contact with my Google rep...
