Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . Ashley 10/14/09 2:12 PM
Google gives you two options - you can add the meta tag to the header section (what you're referring to) or you can upload a file. Perhaps the second option is better for you.

The instructions are all listed in webmaster tools when you try to verify. Choose the Upload a File method and follow them.

Hi judyrm,

If you're using the HTML file verification method, you'll need to actually upload the file to your site. It looks like you've added the filename of a verification file to your homepage, but the file does not actually exist on your site. If you need help uploading your verification file, I recommend contacting your hosting service.

I have the same problem with Network Solutions.  You cannot add html above the body of the page as required by Google.  I just got off the phone with them after a long conversation and was told that it is currently impossible if you are using their site builder tool with template pages.  Is there some other way around this?? I was able to add the Google Analytics html to the page, but it is in the body, but it works.  Can Google make this an option for NS users?

Hi Flying - you may want to start your own thread.

I am having the same problem with Network Solutions.  I have uploaded the HTML file and the page seems to work just fine (http://www.halseyeastanimalclinic.com/google9670e831659b73a1.html) but still no verification.  I have also spent some time on the phone with those guys - "yes sir, I can certainly help you with that....", but they end up telling me they can't.  I am calling again.

I have been able to verify mine for years using the html file http://www.kortia.com/googlea620e3ff2ed0f799.html. I cant add a header tag because it is a website builder. All of a sudden it stopped working on the new sites I am adding. So you are doing it correct, I am doing it correct. This has gone on for a month now and obviously Google is updating the site verification, I hope they fix it soon or come up with a better way to verify a site. So keep checking back with Google.

I am stuck with all of you. I use Yahoo's Site Builder and can't verify any of my websites. I have tried both options with no avail. There must be a work around with this. Surely there can't be this many people with the same problem and no resolution. Any help from someone other than the "start a new post" would be greatly appreciated. It's kind of a business killer for some of us.
Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . redleg 11/5/09 7:17 PM
@halseyvet and @Kortia  Google made some changes in th html verification method (I believe on or about 1 Oct).  The change was made because a large number of sites had problems with the requirement that a non-existing file return a proper 404 error message.  Under the old system the content of the verification file did not matter, it could be an empty file, or any content what so ever as long as the name was correct.

Under the new system the content of the file does matter, the content must be exactly the content you get when you download the file from Google and will be something like

google-site-verification: googlea123456ace70fea2.html

if the file contains anything else  verification will fail.  If you open the files you have listed you will see both contain content other than/in addition to the content provided by Google. It also must still have the exact name provided by Google.

You might try verifying again  -- download the file from Google Webmaster Tools and then upload the file to your site.  Some Control Panels/sites do not allow you to upload a file or "correct" the file by adding html tags or other content.  If your hosting service does this the html verification method is not going to work.

Again you can check this by viewing the source of the file after you up-load it.

Currently the meta tag and html file up-load (as described above) or the only methods to verify a site.  If you can not accomplish one of the two within the resources provided by your hosting service you will not be able to verify ownership.
Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . Rodneymh 11/5/09 7:37 PM
@redleg the file works and you can even see it on Googles verification page.It gives you a test link. I click the test link and it goes straight to the file. No problem. As you can see on both of these situations, the file is exactly the same and with the exact same site builder. One works (the old one) and one does not ( the new one). I have verified my sites for 2 years no problem. using BOTH methods. http://www.kortia.com/googlea620e3ff2ed0f799.html (old site) http://www.thecoloringbarn.com/googlea620e3ff2ed0f799.html (new site)
Both links will work, but the old one will not verify. I miss my old Google web tools. The sad part is I just moved 5 sites and now all of them I cannot verify. Hopefully they are working on it.
Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . redleg 11/5/09 7:54 PM
@Kortia, Yes the link works, i can open it and view it in a browser, but the content of the file is wrong.  If you open the file in your browser and then view the source you will see a bunch of code.  the file can only contain the content provided by Google or verification on new sites  will not work.

As noted above this changed on or about 1 Oct of this year, sites verified prior to this change are OK but to verify new site with the html up-load the file can only contain the line provided by Google.  Again it will be something like

google-site-verification: googlea123456ace70fea2.html
Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . Rodneymh 11/5/09 8:12 PM
yeah so all my new sites I cannot verify. This is disappointing, especially when you put 2 years of work into it. Most site builders will not let you add to the header and have there own code in it. You cannot delete or change it. :(....

At this point in time I would say that all of us that are using various site building tools that do not allow us to add html to the header are screwed!  I have tried everything.

Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . Flying Cloud 11/8/09 7:10 AM
As this appears to be a problem that effects a number of users across a variety of platforms, I would suggest that Google needs to look for an answer, or put some pressure on the providers to build an html box into the header where this file can be uploaded.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks boo boo foo...that is exactly what needs to happen!  In light of the fact that NS and others refuse to do anything about this, Google should lead the charge!
Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . novascotian61 11/11/09 11:50 AM
So what is being said here is that template based web sites WILL NOT be verified because there will be "other" content on the page that is associated with the template. Google screwed the pooch on this one. How could they possibly dream this up to alienate thousands upon thousands of template based sites with this crazy NEW verification process.
Re: Google cannot verify my website.Html code can not be submitted because site template based . Muskrat37 11/11/09 1:50 PM
Google, can you please just recognize the code if it is placed in the body of the website, like you do with the analytics?  I know that NS allows me to add my own html code to the body of the webpage no problem.  Please....please....please fix this.

Yes, Analytics works fine!  Seems like a doable fix.

I was having this problem also after updating my site using a Yahoo Site Solution template.  I wanted Google to verify my site so that I could use Webmaster Tools.  Site Solution does not allow access to html and won't let you put in the meta tags that Google offers.  However, the Yahoo Help people showed me how solve my problem successfully by using the "html file" option that Google gives for verification, and uploading that file to my site's root directory.  That worked, and my site did get verified.  I don't think I can use Analytics, though.

Yahoo Stores

To verify your site by adding meta tags:

1. On the Google Webmaster Tools Home page, click Verify next to the
site you want.

2. In the Choose verification method list, select "Meta tags", and
follow the steps on your screen.

3. Copy the meta tags provided by Google for verification (Meta tag
would be in form of script)

4. Once you get to know the meta tag script, login in to your Yahoo!
Store Control Panel at:

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/services/

5. Click on Store Editor under Store Manager.

6. Click on Variables under Store Editor.

7. Add the meta tag script under 'Head' section within Variable.. I THINK IT SAYS HEAD-META

8. Publish Yahoo! Store Editor.

9. Once you've added the tag to your home page under Head section with
variable, go to Google Webmaster tool again and then click Verify.

Google then will verify that the meta tag exists in the correct
location. If it can't find the tag, it will give you information about
the error encountered.

I did find out waht was going on exactly. 1and1 changed there servers to not be crawled. I was able to drop the meta tag via ftp, however once you publish the default template sets back to default and you have to do it again.

I got it verified, however it does not see the site map now.... Moving all my sites to a new server, have to have my sitemaps working.

Use an FTP program to upload the verification file. Do not use Site Builder for that.
