My Face Is Gone From The Search Results: Am I A Spammer Or Is It A Google Bug? Barry Schwartz 6/11/13 4:40 PM
Maile from Google told me to post this in the Google search results.

My face, authorship snippet, has shown for years for my site.  But in the past few months, it went missing.

Is it a bug? Am I spammer?

A penguin with a chainsaw? What's not to like?

Seriously, we'll see if we can find out what's going on :)

Hi Barry

You're not looking at an authorship snippet. You're looking at a news snippet - which pulls images from the news story.

Looks like everything is working as it should.

No, that is SELand.  See SERoundtable.com, that is what I am referencing.  Scroll down a bit.

From what I know about authorship - Google doesn't always show the author's pic even if it is marked up properly. It could depend on the query and quality metrics from the site.

So, if the rich snippet tool shows that you did everything correctly, great. Then you hope it shows the in SERPs. But I don't think you have any direct control over that.

Have you noticed it on any other stories?
Wondering if cleaning up some code & CSS errors would help. Or making the page more user-friendly (little things like hyperlinking "disavow tool" but not actually taking me to the tool - just taking me to another article - is not user friendly to me). Also not seeing any real unique value added in this article. I'm sure there are many complex factors that go in to determining whether or not Google wants to show your author pic for a specific query/post.

I'm not seeing any author posts when I do a site query - https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aseroundtable.com
May be a soft signal that Google isn't seeing the site as high quality as it once did.

Yea, maybe Google finds my site as not high quality.  Maybe.  :)

It showed from day one of authorship and then a few months ago did not.

You know me, most of the SEO content published out there, comes from me.  Not to brag but I am the source for most anything search.  But Google doesn't find my site as quality.
Re: My Face Is Gone From The Search Results: Am I A Spammer Or Is It A Google Bug? Ashley 6/12/13 10:22 AM
What you see as your personal qualities != your site quality, necessarily. I mean this in terms of algorithmic measurement.

I'm not judging in any way - just tossing out there that there are some things you may be able to improve. Are there any truly perfect sites out there?
Re: My Face Is Gone From The Search Results: Am I A Spammer Or Is It A Google Bug? Matt Storms 6/12/13 10:22 AM
So I am actually sitting behind Barry and sucking off his tethering right now. So I will be glad to jump on this thread.

I am gonna say I do not believe this is a quality issue. Barry used to have the markup and then it disappeared. So I might suggest doing the bandaid technique and remove the rel=author for 30-60 days and then re-implement the markup.

Rel=publisher for the homepage
Rel=author for the deep pages

I know that it is gonna be hard to do but that is what I would do. Unless you are testing you will never learn what happened and how to recover. So if you remove it all, even the publisher you clear everything then re-implement you will have a good story in a few months.

I hope that works.

I think I should change my photo to this, so Matt Storms can help out. ;-)

All these years I thought I was perfect.  At least my parents told me so.  How can Google tell me otherwise. ;-)

I guess the two of you can hug it out then. :)

Hey Barry

Why are you wearing head-mounted flashlights?

Are you going cave exploring with Stroms?

That is actually the glow of my perfection shining through.

Is there a TC here to get this thread back on track? ;-)

As Ashley mentioned, authorship snippets aren't always shown - that can be completely normal. Unfortunately (or maybe that's good :)) our algorithms aren't swayed by flashy photos posted here, but I'll check with the team to see if anything unexpected is happening.

Have fun at SMX!

Cheers

Hi Barry,

This weirdness looks like it could be an issue on Google's end caused by SERoundtable.com linking to https://plus.google.com/u/0/112116680648779331229 instead of https://plus.google.com/112116680648779331229 ?  Not sure how this plays out for email verification...

You might try changing https://plus.google.com/u/0/112116680648779331229 to https://plus.google.com/112116680648779331229 or better yet https://plus.google.com/112116680648779331229?rel=author in SERoundtable.com pages.

Google appears to be redirecting properly but the final URLhttps://plus.google.com/u/0/+BarrySchwartz/posts includes a basehref which seems to be resulting in the wrong URL canonicalized to the correct URL.  Also with your custom URL, there is another 302..

Just a thought?

Maybe but again, I didn't change anything. It worked fine for years.
Re: My Face Is Gone From The Search Results: Am I A Spammer Or Is It A Google Bug? Ashley 6/13/13 8:22 PM
For years? I could be wrong but think it launched almost exactly two years ago.

Yes, 2 years 7 days ago.  So more than one year, is years.

Hi Barry

I don't want to sound churlish, but I cannot for the life of me see what the big deal is about that that specific search snippet.

OK so you wrote a couple of sentences telling the world about someone else's video.

It's very good to bring wider attention to such useful info and their "original" source, but really, is writing a couple of introductory sentences without any value-added discussion really what you call "authorship"?

Please don't get me wrong - I am NOT rubbishing or trivializing your page - I merely think that whether your photo appears next to the snippet of such a page is no great shakes!

Of course, if that is happening with your other, more original, deeper, more thoughtful, more reflective, evaluative/critical stuff, then that's a whole different matter.

Just my seven cents worth!

Robbo

Robbo,

It is happening too ALL my stories. I just picked a random one.

Barry this happened to me a few months back too and I was confused because everything had been working properly and when I checked the url in the tool it was showing authorship was in place but image was not appearing when it had been. I too had the developer add the code when authorship was first introduced. Through my investigation I realized I didn't have the ? in the code, at first I didn't believe it was the issue, after a few weeks I thought I'll try adding the question mark and within a day my image began appearing in the search results again. It may be worth a try.

Yeah, you don't show up for anything and have not for days now!  I looked and you really haven't changed anything.  Either Google is no longer supporting the first iterations or you are the "guinea pig" being used for testing?

I've run into this problem too. It first came up when I switched hosting company and I had to revise my code. I thought I had it straightened out as it showed up when I tested it with them, but it doesn't in the actual results. I'm glad to know it's happening with others. It has effected my click through rate on some of the pages which rank organically for me, even though their position hasn't changed. It's been well over a month for me now.

Good news!

Two questions...
What query do you normally use to check if your rich snippets show up? Is site:www.domain.com going to show author pic and other info from rich snippets?
2. Is there a giant lag in rolling out rich snippets dispaly in SERP in small countries and/or languages? What we are seeing in Slovenia is, that rich snippets are not really showing alnost at all when searching on google.si, and some of them showing when searching for slovenian queries on google.com, but still not enough. Im talking about biggest e-commerce sites, that dont show article price and pic, so its not an authority problem... Thanks!
