Can I remove pages from google video results? Purity Products 12/1/10 2:19 PM
I have read the FAQs and checked for similar issues: YES
My site's URL (web address) is: http://www.purityproducts.com
Description (including timeline of any changes made):
Is there any way to remove pages from my site from google video results? We have videos on our site, and highly relevant google searches end up triggering video results (which are not in the top spot--as they should be because they are 100% relevant and not competitive). The searches used to return a #1 position for the relevant page. Now instead of that, we're #3 or #4 and that same page shows up as a video result.

Hi Purity Products

I don't quite understand what you're trying to achieve -- are there video results from your site that are invalid that you need to have removed? or is it a matter of us not showing the best result from your site?

Cheers
John

The videos are not invalid.

We have pages on our site that have videos on them. But the entire page isn't a video itself. We'd like the a search to show the pages web results rather than video results.

For example, the search
purity products vitamin d

You can see the page http://www.purityproducts.com/purityEcommerce/control/productDetail?productId=dr-cannells-advanced-vitamin-d shows up as a video result.

In this case we can live with it, but in many other cases, the video result is not in the #1 spot that it enjoyed before being deemed a video result.

Ah, I see what you mean -- you want to remove a page from the Video Search results, but leave it in the normal web-search results, right? As Google's crawlers can be controlled separately, you could do this through a robots.txt or robots meta tag directive (see http://code.google.com/web/controlcrawlindex/docs/crawlers.html ). However, I'd try to avoid that, if possible, as it makes it hard to revert back to the "normal" search results.

It would be great to get more explicit examples, if you know of any, so that I can pass them on to the team here.

Cheers
John

Yes John, exactly. Thank you very much for looking into this.

I put this to our robots.txt file yesterday:
user-agent: googlebot-video
Disallow: /

Hopefully that's the right thing to do????

Here is one page already mentioned (found by search term "purity products vitamin d'):
http://www.purityproducts.com/purityEcommerce/control/productDetail?productId=dr-cannells-advanced-vitamin-d

Others:

"purity products omegaberry" - http://www.purityproducts.com/purityEcommerce/control/productDetail?productId=omegaberry-with-vitamin-d3-and-organic-acai

"purity products amazing oranges" - http://www.purityproducts.com/purityEcommerce/control/productDetail?productId=amazing-oranges

"purity products perfect purples" - http://www.purityproducts.com/purityEcommerce/control/productDetail?productId=perfect-purples

Again thank you for your help!

Hi John,

Was anyone on the team able to look into this any further?

Thank you.

I'm having the same issue on my site as well:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=7bbb0cd8dc86b82e&hl=en

If it helps, I removed the video over a month ago, but it's still indexing it as a video.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 12/7/10 4:38 PM
Sorry we misclassified your pages.  We do our best to index all the videos on the web but we occasionally make mistakes like this.  I've passed this on to the video search indexing team.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? SamMcC 12/7/10 6:07 PM
This has happened to us too!

Please would you pass the problems we are experiencing on to the video search indexing team too. Thanks

Thanks for the report Sam.  I passed it on as another example.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? Purity Products 12/13/10 11:19 AM
Hello,

Has there been any update? These pages are still being returned as video results.

Thank you.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 12/13/10 11:58 AM
The robots fix you did should have worked.  I'm looking into why we still seem to think that these pages "are videos".
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? rustybrick 12/14/10 5:56 AM
I don't see them as video results anymore.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? Purity Products 12/14/10 7:01 AM
They are still showing up in video results for me.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? JohnCarcutt 12/15/10 5:37 AM
Searched "purity products vitamin d" for the first time (no caching issues) and see the Video Universal Search element as the top listing with one video from "purityproducts.com" and one from YouTube uploaded by "purityproducts1993".
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? Purity Products 12/20/10 7:00 AM
I am seeing the desired results. Thank you Googlers for your help.

Hi,

I have waited over 1 month and I am still not seeing the desired results. Can someone confirm whether the robots.txt fix actually works, or if Purity Products was manually helped by Google's Team? Btw, thanks to you all at Google who are actually here helping us webmasters! :)

Hey ianWHB,

If I were you, I consider starting another thread that includes specific details about your issue and maybe even include a link to this thread therein.  I'm NOT saying your issue will be solved or even addressed but, I don't see where the extra attention could hurt.  Just my two cents and happy 2011!

Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 1/13/11 4:36 PM
To be clear the current problem that can arise is when a videositemap is submitted with a set of URLs which either mistakenly don't actually contain a video or no longer contain a video.  The best workaround we have for is to change your video site map to mark the video as expired:

<video:expiration_date>Recommended when applicableThe date after which the video will no longer be available, in W3C format. Acceptable values are complete date (YYYY-MM-DD) and complete date plus hours, minutes and seconds, and timezone (YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss+TZD). For example, 2007-07-16T19:20:30+08:00. Don't supply this information if your video does not expire.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? ianWHB 1/14/11 12:30 PM
Thanks guys, but what if I don't have a video sitemap and never have before? I don't...
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 1/14/11 4:03 PM
Hmmm... denying the video bot via robots should have worked for you if you haven't ever submitted a video sitemap.  I can look into your specific case if you can reveal what site this is that we are talking about.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? ianWHB 1/16/11 10:38 AM
Sure! :) I'm at http://bit.ly/L7Byn and I have my robots.txt denying videobot. I checked webmaster tools and it lists my sitemap.xml in video sitemaps in the google labs section. I'm so confused. Thanks mates!
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 1/18/11 7:16 PM
The video sitemaps thing is a red herring in this specific case.  For the the video I checked for your site we just haven't crawled your site since the page once had a video on it (or we thought it did).  This should sort it self out as we recrawl.
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? WHBIan 1/20/11 11:15 AM
thanks for replying! - It's been a longggggggg time since it was crawled then. Months... Does that mean something significant?
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 1/25/11 10:31 AM
hmmm... let me do some more investigation here.  This should have resolved itself by now...
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? WHBIan 1/26/11 12:08 AM
hey mate - you must have worked some magic because it appears to be resolved now! :)
I find it amazing that at a company as big as google, there are people like you who are there to help, and in turn improve google.
By the way, I'm also very very excited to say that I learned a lot this weekend from research, and migrated the site to VPS.net plus performed a lot of optimization for the server. The site is loading MUCH faster now!  :)
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? thejack 1/28/11 7:13 PM
I did look into it.  Didn't have to work any magic though.  Turns out that the normal crawl did just pick up the change.  (Though it did take much longer than we'd like, so we'll make sure we work on speeding up this process).
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? JenniferFarnell 2/17/11 9:51 AM
We are having a serious problem with this on http://uktv.co.uk/food - most of our recipe results which used to rank #1 or #2 are now being returned as video results at the bottom of the page - even though we don't have video on these pages!   An example of this is the search result for 'fish pie' - we used to rank #1 - now it returns as a video result.  We've included the video bot denial in robots.txt - how long does it typically take for google video bot to reindex?  The page gets crawled by google a few times a week.

It's not just the fish pie recipe giving us trouble, either - it's thousands of recipes across our site - our traffic has plummeted  :(

If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it - thanks!!

@JohnM,

We are experiencing a similar problem where the URL's are blocked by robots.txt but they are still taken as videos. If you search for bmi or bmi calculator you will see we are appearing at the bottom of the page under video results. Could you please look into it. Thanks
Re: Can I remove pages from google video results? s_syedali 3/25/11 2:48 AM
It's been 3 weeks and the issue is still there :(
