How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 3/6/09 4:40 PM
This is an Auto-Response for the (very) common question regarding Indexation Times.
This is an attempt to compile information for questions/issues such as;

Q: How long does it take to get Indexed.
Q: How long does Google take to Index a site.
Q: How fast does Google Index a site.
Q: Still not Indexed.
Q: How long does it take to get Crawled.
Q: How long does Google take to Crawl a site.
Q: How fast does Google Crawl a site.
Q: Still not Crawled
.

=============   How long to get indexed   =================

There is No set time in for Google to initially index your site - the time taken can vary.
The time it does take may vary based upon factors such as;

   * Popularity of the site (Whether it has any links to it)

   * Whether the content is Crawl-able (Server Responses and Content type)

   * Site structure (how pages interlink)

It is possible for a site to be crawled/indexed within 4 days to 4 weeks.
In some cases, it may take longer.

## Things to do to check/ensure that things are "optimal" for crawling/indexing ##

   * Check Server responses
     Pages should return 200/OK responses.
     Use tools like   http://oyoy.eu/page/headers/  to check the response.

   * Have actual "content"
     This means having content that bots/spiders can "see" and understand (text!).
     If you are using purely Images, solely Flash or loading content up via JavaScript - then you are likely to encounter problems.
     Remember - bots like to "read" - so ensure that you have "text" for them to read!

   * Use "normal" links
     Normal  links are things such as    <a href="some_URL" title="optional"> Some Link Text </a>
     Using JavaScript based events (no href value, instead using on.click or using select list elements with on.click functions etc.) may result in the bots not following!

   * Submit the site
     NO - Verification is NOT the same as Submitting.
     To submit your site - use the URL Submittal tool   http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

   * Be discovered
     If at all possible, have a few links to the site from other sites.
     These links should be from related/topical/relevant sites.
     These links should be from quality/trusted/popular/reliable sites.
     Links do seem to help - but do NOT go overboard - it only needs 1 link that is "normal" (can be seen/followed by bots).

   * Verify your site
     Sign up for a Google Webmaster Tools account.
     This does NOT mean the same as Submitting your URL!
     This MAY NOT improve the chances of getting crawled/indexed.
     This can help in discovering/locating/understanding problems as/when/if they occur.

   * Provide a Sitemap
     This is completely Optional!
     Sitemaps do NOT guarantee getting Crawled/Indexed.
     Sitemaps MAY NOT increase your chances of getting crawled/indexed, nor improve the speed/rate.

## Common Problems/Causes for initial Crawling/Indexing ##

   * Poor Server responses...
       - The server sending Bad Responses (404/410/500 etc.),
       - The server being Slow/Timing out (taking ages to acknowledge/reply to the server request),
       -  Having Excessive Redirect Strings (Redirect from URL A to B, to C, to D etc.),
       -  Using non-standard Redirects (JavaScript etc.),
     ...may result in the initial crawl getting stuffed.

   * DomainNameServer responses...
     ...that fail to resolve or that have major issues can cause problems.

   * Really shoddy code/markup...
     ...such as seriously malformed <head></head> sections etc. can cause problems.

   * robots.txt ...
       - being malformed,
       - being incorrectly setup,
       - not returning a proper response code,
     ...can cause crawling issues

   * robots meta ...
     ...people may have unwittingly blocked bots, included multiple/additional robots tags and unknowingly be denying bots to ability index/follow pages.

## Additional ##

Please, before deciding that your site is Not Indexed ...

1) Be aware that information/data in the Google WebMaster Tools (GWT/GWMT) may not be "accurate".
    (It is known to be out of date / out of synch in many cases)

2) To check for your site in the Search Engine Results,
    a) please use the Site: operator  =  in Google search, in teh search box, type in    site:www.yourdomain.tld   or   site:yourdomain.tld)
    b) try doing a search for the <title> of a given page using quotes around it (  "your pages title"  )
    c) try doing a search for a snippet of "unique" content using quotes (  "just copy and paste a short sentence of so from one of your pages"  )

3) If requesting help/assistance/information regarding your site and getting crawled/indexed - PLEASE supply relevant information.
    Tell us when the site went live, whether you have actually Submitted the site, whether it is Verified, whether you supplied a Sitemap, whether you access to your Server Logs, whether you can see the GoogleBot crawling your site and what response code it gives etc. etc. etc.

====================================================

NOTE:

This is a "general auto-response" post.

This is not a Topic for discussion - it is a point of reference to save having to type the same answer repeatedly due to the sheer number of times this question is asked and is meant as an aid for people that don't seem search/read the various other posts regarding this topic.
Thank you for taking the time to read this Auto-Response.

Thanks for the great input!

A checklist of sorts eh?
Definitely something for visitors to review.

What helps our posters better understand their concerns and
how to present the best relevant information, I would think should
help to resolve issues on this topic quicker with better accuracy.

It might also be helpful in the AI KB tool that is in progress.

Much appreciated,

(Is it an Artificially Intelligent Kill-Bot?)

Would be nice if people actually read this - but mostly it's hear so I don't have to repeat my self twice a day regarding indexation because people didn't read/search :D

Sorry Auto, I really shouldn't abbreviate such things.

Well, I'm still running with ideas for a the Bionics what not.... (just need time to implement things!).
But, I'm now 100% convinced that in the main, it will be wasted.
People cannot be bothered to Read the FAQ or other topics, I don't see them spending a whole minute answering a few questions to help identify a problem, nor following links to other information.

That is apparently our job.
Answer a question several times, then simply point people to those answers!

Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: eezebilt 7/19/09 1:21 AM
I'm a newbie. Though this response answers the question, it does so quite baldly, and I think this whole subject could be improved considerably.

This is probably the first question a newbie has. I have just spent over an hour trying to find the answer. Though it is an obvious question, it is not covered in the Webmaster Guidelines, the Help Topics, the FAQ, or any of the other fixed texts a newbie is advised to read before searching or asking. Eventually I started searching, and the first answer I found was to the question - 'My site is not indexed yet'. That answer is here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=4b383803827075d7&hl=en , and provides no answer beyond "If you are asking that question - you are just being impatient!". This really does NOT help a new webmaster, and makes it quite hard to persevere and find this discussion.

Surely the answer 'Four days to Four Weeks' should be mentioned on the 'Submit' page, together with a reference to a discussion page like this one where more detail is provided? And in this discussion I was hoping for a bit more detail, such as 'about 60% of web sites are indexed within 2 weeks but 5% are still unindexed after 3 months'; anything to give a newbie an indication of what to expect. The data on how to make life easy for crawlers is useful, but it would help us to know when it is reasonable to re-submit, or to start being concerned. At the moment the '4 days/weeks' figure is helpful, but:

a) it is hard to find. It should be covered in basic instructions, rather than hidden in a discussion
b) it is a wide range with little indication for a newbie about where they may fall
c) there is a distinct air of 'stop bothering me' in the answers - this would be justified if it were easier for a newbie to obtain answers!
d) a definite figure should be given for a 'waiting time' before  requesting help/assistance
Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 7/19/09 4:16 AM
I suggest that you go back and re-read the majority of the stuff here then.

You have clearly missed several Key parts.

Primarily ...

1) Google does NOT guarantee Anything getting Crawled/Idnexed/Ranked!
2) Things vary based on Resources!
3) Things vary based on each site!
So with those 3 major points (that are mentioned numerous times around here!) how the hell is Google meant to give a definitive answer?

Then - just to really screw things up - you have the % of people that would try to make claims agaisn tthem if they didn't C/I/R their site within that time frame!

Yes - there is a definite "air of 'stop bothering me' in the answers" - have you seen how often this question gets asked?
I'll give you a hint .... it was asked So Often that I wrote this topic - and the other one you reference .... and screamed at Googel to get stuff in the FAQ for "not indexed yet" as well!
I think the record todate is the same question about "not being indexed yet" is 6 within the space of 2 Hours, and all with less than 2 other topics between them!!!!!!!

So yes - when people keep asking hte same question, Cannot be bothered to Search, Cannot be bothered to examine Related Topics, Cannot be bothered to look at recent topics with noigh on identical titles .... yeah - I may get a little freaking narked!

And how the Blazes can any one give a time frame for answers around here?
Did you READ the Intro etc.?
This place is maintained by Volunteers!
We come here to help, share what knwoeldge/skills/insights we have.
There is NO OBLIGATION for any of us to help anyone!

If you don't like the Answers, if you don't like the type of Answers, if you don't like the tone of the Answers - then I seriously suggest that you stop trying to learn stuff yourself, and go and pay someone.
That way you can pay them to be nice/pleasant, and pander to your needs.

The alternative is that you get a little more "with-it" and start viewing things from a different angle.
There is little "definitive" in SEO - so you best get out of that thought-angle right now.
There is constant changes in SEO/webDesign in general - so you had best stop being rigid in thinking too.

Yes - we understand that it's hard for a newbie .... strangely enough - it was hard for us when we started too - and there was a damn sight less info!
But we managed - and we give more info than there was - so it should be a little better for you!

So sit back and have a think.

Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: danielroofer 7/19/09 4:58 AM
Personally I think this Auto response is spot on - No one at Google is going to send you an email specifying the exact date you will be indexed.

Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: eezebilt 7/19/09 6:51 AM
Why can nobody here read? I point out a perfectly issue with Google's presentation of information at submission time, and all I get is an ill-considered rant, which does not address the issues I raised in any way.

For the avoidance of doubt:

I did NOT specify that Google should guarantee a specific time before indexing - I can see that it will vary considerably.
I DID suggest that this issue should be mentioned in basic instructions - perhaps at Submission? The reason that everyone is annoying you by asking is that the information is hard to find.

Quite how this counts as 'rigid thinking'  (whatever that means) escapes me. In response to your suggestions, I seriously suggest that you reconsider your volunteer role of providing information to starters (which is I accept is a difficult task) until you get a little more "with-it" and start responding politely.
Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: danielroofer 7/19/09 7:10 AM
Basic instructions:  http://www.google.com/addurl/

It does say that they cant give a time or guarantee.

That post by Auto was designed to give a personal opinion based on experiance done to help ppl - yet in your previous post you claimed it was insuffiecent - "Though this response answers the question, it does so quite badly"

That is why you have got ppls back up a bit in here - someone trys to help thens gets slammed for it.

Of course you have brought up an issue about lack of info that can confuse newbies - so maybe now your initial question has been answered you could create a new thread in chit chat - detailing your suggestions for improvements google can make to the submission section?

Googlers often read the posts here so maybe they will take your suggestions on board.

Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 7/19/09 7:24 AM
Damn well said ...danielroofer... !
:standing ovation:

...eezebilt...
YES - it is confusing for newbies.
YES - the information structure of Google is a little bit "lacking" in finesse
But
The information IS there!
The Answers - to what ever extent they can go to - are provided.

Further - the other topic you reference - PLEASE go and re-read that too.
Pay attention to the main bits...

"...
This is an Auto-Response for the (very) common question regarding Googel WebMaster Tools stating that New Sites are Not Indexed Yet.

..."
+
"...
Okay - it's a new site, right?
You have just got it Verified.
You have just let Google know about it.

..."

As soon as they introduced that - we got umpteen people verifying their site, then hitting us with questions in les than 2 Hours!!!!!!

Can you see why I made that Topic now?
Can you see why I say people are being impatient and may need to wait?

.

Seriously - if you do NOT like my answers - do NOT read my topics.
It really is that simply.
The problem you will find is that I'm jsut about hte ONLY person who compiles Resource docs around here.
I'm one of the few that constantly ewhinges at Google to get things more informative - suggeting various changes, additions and inclussions!

So I suggest you stop and think.
So put the attitude down, take a step back, draw a deep breath, and look around.
I'm not your enemy - I'm one of the ones fighting for you.
Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: eezebilt 7/19/09 8:44 AM
""Though this response answers the question, it does so quite badly"....That is why you have got ppls back up a bit in here - someone trys to help thens gets slammed for it.

???? - When did I say badly?  The word was BALDLY. The answer was (I am sure) correct, but not very detailed. I was noting the lack of detail, not that there was anything wrong with what was there.

"..Can you see why I made that Topic now?..Can you see why I say people are being impatient and may need to wait?.."

??? - I WAS waiting. At no point was I asking "When is my site going to be indexed?". All the answers I got seem to think that was what I was asking - they didn't stop to read what I wrote. What I thought I was doing was trying to help you, and any other volunteers, by taking the time to indicate what a newbie feels like, and make some positive sugestions to stop him bothering you all the time. In my book, that made me fighting for you as well....

"...Now your initial question has been answered you could create a new thread in chit chat - detailing your suggestions for improvements google can make to the submission section?..."

??? I read the help and FAQ files. I searched the forum. I found my answer, without disturbing anyone. Then I volunteered some of my time to detail a suggestion to improve the submission process, which was:

- put a simple figure (like 4 days to 4 weeks, if that is a reasonable one) in some central resource, like on the Submission page or in the FAQ.
- put a definite figure for a 'waiting time' before requesting help/assistance there as well. Perhaps 2 months?

If a straightforward figure is too simplistic, put a reference to a discussion document there. But if Google don't put some basic information there to tell new submitters how to act, there will be a continuous flood of people who don't take the time to struggle through the references and find your resource document. I did take that time, but to read your responses, you wouldn't think so....

auto you seem very active here, and you provide valuable info, however i also see that you manage to often answer in such a way that tension rises ; i understand you re tired of reading and writing the same things over and over, but you volunteered for that. (and please do not answer in an angry way or anything, it is just my very feeling after reading many posts).

then one question about your helpful post at the top:
"  If you are using purely Images, solely Flash or loading content up via JavaScript - then you are likely to encounter problems."
but as far as i know, google scrawler is now able to read text in the flash websites. it has been indicated last year on google blogs, though i've not followed the case since. am i wrong about it? did something reverse-changed?
Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 12/30/09 7:57 PM
This isn't really meant as a discussion topic ... but ...

Google "can" read "some" Flash and Javascript.
Unfortunately - it really does depend on the nature of the F/JS.

In some cases for Flash, it isn't text, its an image of text.
You tend not to have headings either.
There is also a serious lack of "real" links - so you lose out on the internal link text/link value etc.
You don't have "pages" per se - so no unique Titles.

So all in all - Flash still kind of sucks.
It was never really meant for what it gets used for.

If you want a Flash site - then you are best of using individual files, on separate pages.
You should ensure that the files actually content text, and if possible, some form of Semantics.
The files should be loaded up in their own html files, and thus permit some form of context with titles and links etc.
Further - some form of "normal" content should be provided for those without Flash capability - such content should match what is in the Flash for that URL.

.

There, a complete non-antagonistic response.
And in most cases - the "tone" I end up using is somewhat deserved.
The Posters that ask valid questions, or original ones, or that show some sign of actually trying to finda solution ... they get tons of help.
The ones that have attitude, are lazy or generally aggressive/rude - they get the rough stuff (And it's around 17% - whioch considering the number of topics, posts and people ... really isn't that bad ;))

Started by "eezebilt".

Who didn't realise that it's spelt: "BOLDLY" and not "BALDLY".

Which got mistaken by admin for "badly".

Then...eezebilt re-confirms his mistake and with attitude.

Quote: " When did I say badly?  The word was BALDLY ".

( He means Boldly lol )

When did Captain James T Kirk... ever "Baldly" go into space ?!

Not until he was wearing that toupee...much later in the series lol.

For the avoidance of any more error, I only write what I mean to say.

In this case I meant to say 'baldly', so I wrote 'baldly'.

Have you never come across this word used to mean 'unadorned, without any extra information'? Perhaps English is not your first language? If that is the case, I would avoid commenting on English usage until you understand it a bit better....
Re: How long till my site gets Indexed // How long for Googel to Index a site ::: Auto-Response ::: Jaguar Skills 3/21/10 11:32 AM
Bald:  ( baldly adv. )

1. Lacking hair on the head.
2. Lacking a natural or usual covering: a bald spot on the lawn.
3. Lacking treads: a bald tire.
4. Zoology Having white feathers or markings on the head, as in some birds or mammals.
5. Lacking ornamentation; unadorned.
6. Undisguised; blunt: a bald statement of policy.

Yes. The meanings in items 5 and 6 refer. You will see my comment above:

"The word was BALDLY. The answer was (I am sure) correct, but not very detailed. I was noting the lack of detail, not that there was anything wrong with what was there."

Autocrat wrote a bald, blunt statement of policy - there was no extra detail. Are you beginning to comprehend English usage a little better now?

If you need to understand more about how the word is used, I suggest that you google 'He wrote baldly'. You will find many thousand references for this usage.....

No offence folks ... any chance of taking this lexical discussion to it's own topic .... in the Chit Chat section?

Agreed - topic pointless - I will drop it.

To add something of more use to this topic - I found that:

- I was crawled within a week of submission, but it had no effect due to a poor robots.txt
- When I cleaned that up, I was crawled occasionally for the next month, but did not seem to get indexed
- After about a month I was indexed

Although I have a site which is the only one of its kind on the web, and typical hits of 10-20 people per day specifically looking for that topic, I still do not score first on a Google query. That seems to be because few sites reference me, and sites with high references seem to score highly. I don't mind, because all the higher scoring sites simply reference me, so all queries arrive at my site in the end.

If your site has competition, getting other sites to reference you seems to be the key to getting a high index position. Getting the HTML right and reading the advice is the key to getting crawled successfully....

Stop spamming this forum Mark.

I've asked for this post of yours to be removed. This is not an apporpriate forum to link drop - keep your links in your profile.

Spamming the Gogole Forum is dumb.
Spamming the Google Forum in one of My topics is NOT a smart move.

If I see it - I'll damned well dedicate a post to your site,
pulling it apart.
See how you liek that ranking!

I write this with a trembling hand fearing the Wrath of Autocrat, but ...

Yes, I have submitted, yes, I have been crawled, and all within five days of submitting. I even have a link from another successful blog plus Facebook, plus comments. But my site is still not showing up in Google searches:
http://annacheneats.blogspot.com/

My question is this: is there a delay between crawling/indexing and showing up in searches? If there is still the 4 day to 6 week wait, then I am happy to be patient. But if, as my dashboard tells me, I have been successfully crawled, the robots are happy, and my site should therefore be showing up simultaneously, has something gone wrong?

BTW, my sitemap address is http://annacheneats.blogspot.com/rss/xml. Hope this is OK. It has a big green tick next to it in Webmaster tools.

So, there you have it. Patience? Or is something wrong?

Many thanks. Offering Autocrat virtual chocolate and an aspirin.

That URL gives me a 404 response - have you recently made any changes to it?

Hi Archie,

Thanks for your response. No changes to rss/xml since I submitted it on the 24th. Did I set this up incorrectly? I just typed in the rss/xml suffix at my Webmaster Tools page and it seems to have accepted it. Was I supposed to have done something at Blogger?

BTW, I spent a week with annacheneats.wordpress.com before I decided to come back to Blogger where I'm more familiar with the platform and I can have AdSense. I noticed that this is still showing up in searches when I search for the title: Anna Chen Eats.

I searched for text recently posted in my blogspot blog but it isn't showing up.

Archie,

I got the same 404 result when I clicked on the sitemap link: http://annacheneats.blogspot.com/rss/xml

So I went back to Webmaster Tools where it reads thus:

Sitemap: http://annacheneats.blogspot.com/rss.xml Change
 See sitemap
Format        Submitted URLs        Submitted        Downloaded
Atom Feed
8
7 URLs in web index
Jun 24, 2010
Resubmit
Jun 29, 2010
Type        URLs submitted
Unknown        8
Sitemap errors and warnings
Line        Status        Details
No errors or warnings found.

I clicked on resubmit, so the date has changed to 29 June, "pending download" .

Just clicked on the link again: http://annacheneats.blogspot.com/rss.xml. Now getting a page of text from my site with all the code (making it pretty-well unreadable) and a message telling me this is an Atom formatted XML site which is meant to be viewed in a Newsreader or syndicated to another site. Is this a good sign?

Uh! Just searched for http://annacheneats.blogspot.com/rss/xml, and got this:

Page not found
Sorry, the page you were looking for in the blog Anna Chen Eats — East Asian Food does not exist.
Go to blog homepage

And yet it's there.
