PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 1/7/09 3:02 PM

  ====   Page Rank has dropped?   =====

There has been a recent, (or is a current/ongoing), change to PageRanks (PR).
This may mean that for some of us, the PR shown on our sites/pages has changed (lowered or dropped to Zero etc.).

PageRank is based on the Quantity/Quality (Emphasis on Quality!) of InBound Links (IBLs) to your site (links from external sites).
Technically, PR is something that we should not have any real influence over - due to the point that we should not be making links to our own sites!

For those of you that Didn't read the FAQs (as asked).....

[ The below is a straight copy from the FAQ page for Crawling/Indexing/Ranking ]

#pagerank
Q: My site's PageRank has gone up / gone down / not changed in months!
A:
Don't worry. In fact, don't bother thinking about it. We only update the PageRank displayed in Google Toolbar a few times a year; this is our respectful hint for you to worry less about PageRank, which is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed and ranked. PageRank is an easy metric to focus on, but just because it's easy doesn't mean it's useful for you as a site owner. If you're looking for metrics, we'd encourage you to check out Analytics, think about conversion rates, ROI (return on investment), relevancy, or other metrics that actually correlate to meaningful gains for your website or business.

As PR is based on external factors (external links and other sites) it is technically out of our control.
The changes in PR could be due to many things - including;
* Other sites ceasing to exist
* Other sites removing links to your site
* Other sites blocking links to your site (nofollow, redirects etc.)
* Links on other sites being devalued (Worth less than before)
* Links on other sites being Annulled/Ignored (site is no longer trusted, nature of the link questioned etc.)

# If you think about it, it could be to a site that linked to a site having their PR changed… that results in your PR change?

# It does NOT necessarily mean you are suffering a penalty or are somehow being picked on by Google.

--- For those of you that insist that you have been penalised ---

Honestly, do you really think that you have been manually examined, found wanting and had a handcrafted PR penalty applied?
Seriously – if you honestly do think that – then WHY?  What have you done that could warrant such a thing?  Go fix it now and file a reconsideration request!

NOTE:

This is a "general auto-response" post.

This is not a Topic for discussion - it is a point of reference to save having to type the same answer repeatedly due to the sheer number of people that don't seem able to find the FAQ or the various other posts questioning PR changes.Thank you for taking the time to read this Auto-Response.

Further points and clarifications.

# It is possible that Canonicalization issues can be a factor in PR results appearing to change/drop.
* If you have both www and non-www working - please check both formats before panicking!
* If you have incorrectly setup redirects, it may cause problems.
* If you have recently setup redirects, it may be that the PR change occured and the timing was bad - so the PR is not showing properly (it has not changed/dropped, you jsut can't see it as it's referencing the old format?) (this can apply to both www/non-www and choosing a preferred domain name etc.)

# Selling Links can result in such an occurrence
Just in case you missed the subtle hints above!
* Stop doing it
* Clean up the site and conform to the Guidelines
* File for reconsideration!

# This is NOT an official/sanctioned post.
This is merely me getting tired of posting the same sort of response as hardly anyone seems to read the FAQs or other posts!

the above given link of site http://www.pr10.com/ giving some tips.
-----------------------------------
the TIP NUMBER 4
Dots, Dots, and More Dots. Put them at the bottom of your document like this:
.............
Then link each one to your pages - make sure you link one to Google and for good measure another to Yahoo. Don't link to other sites (other than your own) that aren't search engines. Don't even link to sites that used to be search engines - like AltaVista.
--------------------------------------

is not Google referring to a spamy techniques sites. if not then i think we should use it.

Honestly, why have a metric and then turn around and tell website owners, "...don't bother thinking about it?" My PR recently dropped from 3 to 0, I don't know why, and it DOES bother me. Some of the top contributors are awfully patronizing about this and don't seem to understand how emotionally invested website owners are in their sites.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: webado 7/30/10 8:23 PM
The only thing you should be invested in is making a good useful original website.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 7/30/10 8:53 PM
?

What do you mean by...
"... Some of the top contributors are awfully patronizing about this and don't seem to understand how emotionally invested website owners are in their sites. ..."
?

Of course ... none of us have our own sites, none of have have had the stress/worries/frustration of getting a site indexed/ranked or paniced when things have gone strange/up/down and we had no clue!
Neither do any of us have clients and deal with this sort of thing on a regular basis, having to explain it multiple times and assuage the fears/worries of others.

No!

So of course - you are right!
We have no * cluel as to the state you people are in!

*roll eyes*

So - how about this.
You pull your head out of "me" land for a whole 2 minutes - stop - and think a bit!
If it was important - don't you think we'd be telling you about it?
If it was something to worry about - don't you think we'd be telling you how to fix it?
If it wasn't a waste of your time/effort - do you think we'd be telling you to not worry?

Seriously!

Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: webado 7/30/10 9:53 PM
Of course, they are only worried because they want to sell links - and base them on visible toolbar PR LOL
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: TX_77479 8/4/10 7:52 PM
webado, I wouldn't know how to sell links if you held a gun to my head. I am 0% likely to ever sell a link. And I am very motivated to build "a good useful original website" - concern about PR isn't mutually exclusive with that.

Autocrat, I don't want to pick a fight with you but I really *do not understand" why Google advertises a metric that we are basically told to ignore. Wouldn't it be better to just eliminate any public PR?
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: webado 8/4/10 7:56 PM
Well why don't you just remove the PR button from your Google Toolbar so you can stop obsessing over it?

And yes, it woudl be way betetr if that disapppeared but it's so engrained in the culture it will take a miracle to make it disappear. It is however 1000000% useless and meaningless.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: TX_77479 8/4/10 7:58 PM
webado, that's actually a terrific idea...I think I will do that. I was originally worried that the drop in PR meant I had done something wrong, but since I can't figure out what it might be, I can't find anything to fix.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: webado 8/4/10 8:00 PM
I am hoping that you aren't being sarcastic, because you are now actually talking sense.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: TX_77479 8/4/10 8:05 PM
webado, nope, not being sarcastic. I liked your idea because I'm tired of stressing over something you reassure me isn't important. I hope you are right!
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: webado 8/4/10 8:14 PM
Good :)
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: Autocrat 8/4/10 8:26 PM
If it makes you feel any better .... I don't use the Google ToolBar,
and have only ever checked PR 5 or 6 times,
and I've been building sites for years.

That's how important I find the PR score.

Rankings are more important.

The only thing seeing PR is good for is to get an estimate of how fast G may process/crawl etc.,
and you can do that by looking at server logs and seeing which URLs get visited the most by GoogleBot.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: TX_77479 8/5/10 4:19 AM
That does make me feel better, Autocrat...thanks!
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: deniseweber 9/15/10 8:01 AM
Thanks, but I already read all that. And I keep hearing it isn't important, but, since I make a living reviewing products, this is harmful to me. Why? They ask page rank. I often get declined because of zero pr rank.
Re: PageRank (PR) has lowered / dropped ::: Auto-Response ::: webado 9/15/10 8:25 AM
You make a living planting backlinks to sites of products you review?

They only pay you for such reviews in order to gain a backlink and boost their pagerank. So you are selling links capable of passing PR, which is against guidelines.

There's no issue if you add rel="nofollow" to the link. Of course this will  not pass pagerank to the destination either.
