Why did my page rank go from 2 to 0 after a few changes we though would help us? eyespypro 8/14/09 10:47 AM
We recently implemented a few changes to our site that was a PR 3 until last year about this time when Google slapped everyone down a PR, and has been a 2 since then. At the advice of a coach, we implemented full www. in our URL's, fixed the home page to have the keywords in the titles and tags, and made our blog url's seo friendly.

Why on earth would it drop us down to a Zero? Is there anything that I am missing that needs to change? Any help is appreciated.

about this time when Google slapped everyone down a PR

You just made that up, didn't you?

If you change the URL by adding a www to it, it's now a new URL and will not get PageRank visible on the toolbar until the next time Google updates it, which is only a couple times a year.

No I didn't, both of my sites went down 1pr last year about this time, and one of my coaches reports similar feedback from others in the group. Is this an urban legend?

And I still can't wrap my arms around the whole www thang. I tried to avoid it like the plague all my life, as it is superfluous waste of typing, contributing to arthritis & carpal tunnel, when 99% of sites work w/o it. I was also instructed that it would help my site to go to the full www, or is that an urban legend also?

And why would Google & other engines consider it a different URL? Because it's now a sub domain like blog.example.com? Crikey, was I given false info that just hurt me, or will it help me in the long run? Your experience in these issues is extremely appreciated.

I'm really curious to hear the logic behind the coach's advice that having a www in front of the domain name is more beneficial.

It's something we used to say about ten years ago when some browsers used to insert "www" in front of a domain name if it wasn't there already.  IIRC IBM's early OS2 browser did that.  These days we just say "pick one" - that IS still important.

Bingo Phil, this particular coach was doing exactly that in the past. So did I completely screw up my rankings because of this? Now it's duplicate content, over 1,500 pages on a cart running php with virtual pages. I would be curious to hear any comments on the ramifications of what I have done. Thanks everyone...

Basically what Phil is saying is that it IS necessary. He wasnt saying that you shouldnt have fixed the problem! What kind of logic is that?

Colin, Phil said: " These days we just say "pick one" - that IS still important." I took that to mean either have the www or don't have it. Did I not read that correctly?

Yes! I remember that now. I believe my very first website that I created (poorly I might add lol) added the www.
