"Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index chiewy 2/4/13 7:19 PM
Has Google recently changed the "Your most linked content" report?

Previously you were able to look up how many links your homepage was receiving. Now the "Your most linked content" report has all my deeper content except the homepage.

I'm an agency so have access to multiple sites - and all the sites are now missing the homepage in this report.

Can someone from Google please explain how I can get this stat back into Google Webmaster Tools?

Thanks,
Anne

Anne,

Ouch.. I just posted a very similar post to this one ... Then saw your post after refresh.

I guess this means that it could be a WMT update?

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index chiewy 2/4/13 7:37 PM
Hi Matt - I hope it's a bug rather than a new version / update. I think it's useful to compare how your link distribution is throughout all your URLs, not just the homepage or just the deeper pages. I would guess most sites would receive majority of their links for the homepage so that stat would be important to have.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Matt Wan 2/4/13 7:46 PM
I agree that the missing data to a sites homepage would really hinder any meaningful review of a sites link profile especially if like us a webmaster is trying to clean up a sites link profile.

Hopefully, can get a response from Google.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index SeldaK 2/4/13 8:54 PM
I am having the same problem starting from today. No link back is showing to my site http://miamirealestateinc.com, the link backs to other page seems to be ok. I am wondering if this is an indicator of an issue on my site. Any idea ?

Thanks
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/4/13 9:59 PM
looking like a WMT hiccup.

The issue is being escalated to Google for evaluation.

Give WMT a day or two to reset.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index chiewy 2/4/13 10:08 PM
Thanks for escalating the issue. I'll check the link reports again in the next couple of days.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index JohnMu 2/5/13 5:24 AM
Thanks for the report, Anne (and thanks for escalating, Stevie!). This looks like an issue with how the data is displayed in Webmaster Tools, it shouldn't affect your site's crawling, indexing or ranking. I don't have any specifics at the moment, but the team is looking into the details to see what we can do here. Thanks for your patience & sorry for the confusion!

Cheers
John

Thanks...always good to read a post from someone working at google. I have the same problem at the homepage of my website (www.buskermakelaardij.nl) and it scared me a lot this morning... But a bit more comfident after reading the previous post. Any idea how long this could take?
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Hans Busker 2/5/13 6:15 AM
by the way...the same problem occurs in the internal link section.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index virtualdreamer 2/5/13 6:23 AM
Same here... internal links are looking strange. It has to be a glitch. I would not sweat it.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Nathan Giesbrecht 2/5/13 8:11 AM
Would this have anything to do with the URL parameter editing problem that's gone unaddressed for the last couple of weeks?
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/5/13 8:27 AM
as promised, I did escalate and John Mu is on the case.

For those of you who had their thread moved/consolidated, it was done to simplify future notifications.

as John said, the issue appears to be related to how data is displayed in Webmaster Tools.  The data exists, we just don't see it.

Geminineil,

For you is it only the link to homepages that are gone? In my website http://worknhire.com it seems a few home page link are present and numerous links to inner pages are gone.

Any further news from guys from Google?

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Geminineil 2/6/13 4:58 AM
Foe me it is only the homepage links that have completely gone.. I gather that it is likely to be a 'glitch' in the Google machine...
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Ha Phuong Book 2/6/13 5:00 AM
Google is evaluating your links profile
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Ha Phuong Book 2/6/13 5:06 AM
Please be sure that there is no glitch here, as some of my friends have the same trouble, but only for the url need to be evaluate (on top serp, great amount of links....) it'll be ok if your links are natural

Hoe do You know this? And what is meant by natural links?

Suggest that you watch this for a couple of days as it may be a Google WMT problem.. and NOT your website....
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index virtualdreamer 2/6/13 7:19 AM
This 'backlinks gone' thing has happened before. I would suggest everyone cool their jets and check back in a few days. The world is not ending.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index SeldaK 2/6/13 7:49 AM
Any reading regarding this issue that let us know that Google is evaluating our link backs? Thanks
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Ha Phuong Book 2/6/13 8:57 AM
G evaluates always. As this happened for only strong pages (not random), so you should pay attention.

However, we have company with the same issue, so peace will be back if you didnt do some bad method.

It is the same for my website http:ovttours.com  I still see a few links from the homepage but most of them are gone. Press releases and other links that I recently saw on there from others linking in don't show anymore. My site is to new to tell if it is affecting ranking.

Ok well thanks for the update and we look forwards to a patch.

Do GWT users get notified of when the bug is patched?

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Mark Harrington 2/7/13 8:51 AM
Yep, also having the same problem! ...and it's getting worse!

The number of "Linking Domains" for one of my sites has suffered an 86% drop in WMT. For another of my sites, it was showing a 77% drop when I checked yesterday - just checked again now, and the number of linking domains has dropped by 96% of what it was a week or so ago!!

Whilst there's no noticeable affect on my sites positions/traffic, be nice if the folks at Google - who said several day's ago that they were "looking into it", could now give us an update on the cause (is it as a result of the recent PageRank refresh maybe?) and the likely ETA of then this issue will be fixed?

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index virtualdreamer 2/7/13 9:15 AM
Now the glitch is getting downright bizarre. WMT states my most linked content is on my non-English pages ... in actuality some of my least linked content. This is too weird to take seriously but it has been over 48 hours now.  Getting concerned.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/7/13 11:31 AM
>Now the glitch is getting downright bizarre

Yes it is.

Same weird crap happening to me and others I know.

>Getting concerned.

Don't worry.  I have escalated our concerns to my official Google employee contact and the problem will be resolved.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Rubincain 2/7/13 12:05 PM
For us it's not just the homepage, it's thousands of pages that have dropped from the report.

One week ago we had 218.000 backlinks.

Two days ago I disavowed 20,000 links from scraping sites

Today the total backlinks displayed is only 25,000 which is largely made up of the links I just disavowed. ARG!

That's a loss of about 200,000 backlinks on a 8 year old site.

I very much hope they come back.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Jimmery2 2/7/13 3:42 PM
Does anyone know if this issue would affect the PageRank? I was expecting a significant increase since my site was featured on Lifehacker and a bunch of other blogs, but nothing changed. My links dropped from over 1200 to 7. I know I always hear "don't worry about PageRank" but I was considering selling this on Flippa where PR means everything, so I was very disappointed.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/7/13 4:03 PM
No harm, no foul.

This is a reporting issue, not an algorithm issue.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index utptube 2/7/13 6:49 PM
I saw this thread a couple of days back and was thankful that I was not the only one as my blog http://forumofthoughts.blogspot.com/ had a significant drop in links from 1100 to 64. But today it again got reduced to 49..

What's going on? Are Google employees looking into it?

Yes.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index MaxvonD 2/8/13 1:01 AM
I'm receiving mixed results. My new site Hotel di Indo is showing links to the homepage, Indonesian Restaurant is not showing any links and Indonesian Recipe is showing some links, but not all. It seems like Google are doing some sort of major update, as i have noticed the pages crawled has been spiking recently.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Gavin Walsh 2/8/13 4:18 AM
After Google's updates one of my sites has dropped considerably down the rankings.  I was going t o see if I could clean up the backlinks, but apparently I only have 3!

I know there are a lot more than this - how can I dissavow links when they're not even being shown?

www.thebootcamp.co.uk is the site effected and we're now losing money as a consequence of Googles updates and this error.

This is not good :(

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Pelagic 2/8/13 10:06 AM
Hi Gavin, your site has a ton of onsite issues that will affect its ranking, it would be good if you started your own thread to get some feedback on them ;)
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index popo 2/9/13 9:19 AM
Well it looks like it *is* affecting ranking though.  We're down a few notches from where we've been for years.   It can't be coincidental.

yes, it can be coincidental.  I am down to 5 crappy inbound links and traffic jumped up 12% on both Thursday & Friday over the prior the same days the prior week.

ah, no it isn't nor was it expected to be fixed by now.

Remember, they had to:

find the cause

determine the fix

test the fix

roll out the fix

and most engineers don't work on the weekends.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index MG85 2/11/13 1:13 PM
I have this same problem. I have to say I also feel like it is affecting my ranking. I check my rankings for certain keywords daily using ranktracker and they have been stable for weeks, I saw a sudden drop at the same time as this issue appearing so can only really put it down to that, and wonder if there is more to this and if we are going to hear of an update that has just happened? It seems from reading this and other posts that is has affected some ranking and not others, just as the issue itself has affected some sites but not all.
Is there any updates on whether this bug/glitch is being resolved any time soon? Is early next week still the estimate?
Thanks
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/11/13 2:00 PM
coincidental

Oh, by the way, my site (with only 5 backlinks) is up 20% over the same period 1 month ago and seems to be growing every day.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index WH-M 2/11/13 2:59 PM
Google pagerank is based on backlinks. Of course will harm the pagerank. OR the next pagerank update will do no changes. Anyway i think google have no capacity to get back all the links in 3 months!

I have had a massive drop in traffic over the past few days.
Both of my sites have increased in PR, however the "links to your site" have gone from very high to 1, and 26..
It's been like this for almost a week so far, and my traffic has gone from 6k a day to 2.3k a day. I hope whatever this is, it gets fixed soon because it is very bizarre.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/11/13 7:39 PM
>Of course will harm the pagerank.

Try again, dude.

WMT is a reporting function and is NOT connect to search or the search algorithms.

Reporting function.

The same as the NYT reports the Dow Jones Industrial average for the previous day.  IF the NYT stops printing the DJIA does that mean the stock market stopped trading?  NO, it means the NYT stopped printing the DJIA.  There is no cause and effect between a reporting function and your site's poor performance.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index popo 2/11/13 7:39 PM
Something has changed in a major way in terms of our traffic -- we have not seen this before.  This is definitely not just a reporting error.

It would be great to hear a little more info from someone at Google.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index StevieD_Web 2/11/13 7:45 PM
>It would be great to hear a little more info from someone at Google.

John Mu (Google employee) responded on this thread and a blog post was written by the engineering team in response to the issue.

As I have said repeatedly....

1)  find the bug,

2)  determine the fix for the bug

3)  test the fix for the bug

4)  roll out the fix for the bug to our WMT accounts.

This all takes time and most engineers don't work the weekends.

BTW, if you don't like the level of service that Google is providing to you then I think you should ask for a refund of the $ you paid to Google to provide WMT to you.

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index popo 2/12/13 6:32 AM
Well.  It looks like 90% of our links are back.

But what's more disturbing is that our rank in search listings has dropped to its lowest level in 5 years!   We're now off page 1 for many of our major traffic-driving search terms.

Anyone have any info on why we're being penalized?  We've never once bought links.  Clearly the new algo thinks we're cheating somehow.  Or they're weighting something else much more highly perhaps?

The sites now above us have a fraction of our organic / direct traffic.    This is extremely troubling.    Anyone else seeing the same thing?
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index SeldaK 2/12/13 6:33 AM

Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index popo 2/12/13 10:14 AM
SAS, thanks for the report but no that's not helpful.  My question was not "Did everyone lose rank?"

Obviously, rank is a zero-sum game in aggregate.   My question was whether the algo had changed and what is now being penalized/weighted differently that may have affected us.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Calvin232 2/12/13 11:57 AM
I would say be a little patient. Initially I thought our site was under some sort of penalty. but yesterday most of our links came back.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index Hard-Worker 2/12/13 2:40 PM
Well is about time! How am I supposed to get out of an external link penalty if I am unable to see the links!

Google really needs to get better at leaving alerts in WMT when there is a known problem that they are dealing with. A company the size of Google having such poor communication is very frustrating. It could be construed that they simply do not care about the users therefore no need to notify them with a play by play.
Re: "Your most linked content" report now missing links to homepage / index SAS Smart 2/12/13 6:00 PM
Hello popo,
am almost sure this problem have no relation with google algo. my understand it's was just kind of filter problem of webmaster report, the report is not showing all the links you have specially not show your website main page. must of the time if there is change in algo. google make report about it. I didnt see any effect in all my websites. have nice day.
