|Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/16/12 9:05 PM|
I have read the FAQs and checked for similar issues:
My site's URL (web address) is: http://www.kcbasementfinishing.com
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/16/12 9:07 PM|
I have worked on the seo for this site for a few years now. I have easily invested 300+ hours in promoting my website around the web. I used to show up for the term "basement finishing" on the first page. All of the sudden my site has completely disappeared overnight. I did not make any changes to the site and do not have any idea as to why it has disappeared.

No physical address or telephone number to indicate you are real business.
internal pages are void of content or lack significant content.
Even the home page is weak
Oh, and your internal navigation SUX big time.
is the link to your page in your side navigation.

Google is refining its search algorithms to return the best results. That's why you disappeared. They got better.
Your site is very thin, too thin. I don't even know where you are located but you must be a local business. How can Google return your site in local search queries when you don't provide that info to anyone? You should at least list a city. If you're lucky and your competition is weak, that might be enough. But I can't tell you because I don't know where you are to check your competition.
300 hours into SEO? I'm sorry to say this, but I don't see any.
Did you do keyword research? I'm not sure I'd query "basement finishing" to find you. I'd probably just look for a general contractor or cabinetmaker, flooring contractor, etc.
If I may, I'd recommend rather than spend another 300 hrs into SEO, hire a professional and get it done right. Then you can spend your time doing what you do best.
If you want help, just let me know. Otherwise, I wish you the best.

I am referring to the organic results.

Hello, nice website. It looks like you do great work. I'm sorry this happened to you. You will have a hard time finding any sympathy here. Please be very careful taking any advice you may receive in this forum. Remember that these self proclaimed experts may well be wrong since Google will never tell you what has gone wrong. This may be old news to you but... You can try using the W3C validator located here: validator.w3.org/ or Google's "page speed app to get some insights. There are many free analysis sites like those.
I had the same thing happen to a few of my sites. After 10+ years of steady growth google revoked most of our traffic overnight for reasons that a year later we still do not understand. various, intensive "solutions" applied to our sites at great expense have provided no return after about 1 year. My career path has been totally altered by this since it seems hopeless. We can no longer hold a decent rank even when searching for our own registered trademark brand name. Pirate copies of our material get more traffic than the official pages now.
I can say that your content is a little thin. Your pages look to be coded pretty well however you are missing "alt" tags on many of your images.
It would seem to me that lack of an address or phone number would be a strange & unfair factor to judge a site by. if you business does not require or utilize a physical office then you can't be expected to publish your home address. A phone number is probably an easier issue & I notice you have a phone number prominently displayed on your contact page... I would doubt this is your main problem.
Your site is not of low quality but there are always ways to get faster & cleaner & to comply better with standards.
Good luck. I'm afraid you're going to need it.

KC Basement Finishing used to be a separate company. About 6 months ago I decided I did not want the extra paperwork of having the second business so I merged it back to the parent company. I'm sure that this has something to do with it but still am confused as to why I dropped from organic results.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/16/12 9:45 PM|
As for you, it is clear that you have no idea what you are talking about. I have a youtube channel with nearly 200,000 views and a blog that has 10,000 views per month. The PR of the site is a 3 and has many quality links. The navigation of the site used to be much more in depth but I decided to scale it back about a year ago.
As for targeting the keyword "basement finishing" as opposed to a general contractor term... you couldn't be more wrong. Targeting that keyword has been one of the best moves I have ever made. My site ranked on the first page anywhere in the country. Please don't insult me by providing any further responses.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/16/12 9:48 PM|
Thanks for the response. It sounds like my best bet may be to scrap this site and push my keyword on a different URL. Most of my SEO is external and can easily be redirected.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/16/12 9:58 PM|
I have been working on building a new website. Earlier today I setup a wordpress account @ test.kcbasementfinishing.com
Is it possible that this has something to do with it?
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||katmouse||4/16/12 10:11 PM|
I'm trying to help, not insult you. I'd appreciate if you not read intonations and intent in my comments that are not there. The fact that you "hear" that makes me wonder what kind of attitude you must have. Calm down. Believe it or not, there are people in here who want to help.

That says 'basement finishing' a lot.
Only thing I can think of.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/17/12 7:09 AM|
Thanks for the response on that. I have tried my best not to "keyword stuff" but it can be difficult when that's all we do.

Kathy seemed to me to give you good advice and not insults
Your site seems to lack serious content. Good pictures but the content is missing. You need quality content, not just quality pictures. You should break those images up into separate pages. dedicate a page to each picture.....Explain each project type: the process involved in the home remodel project. The steps to each remodel, expectations and so on. This is valuable for the user and the search engines.
Then add hard coded links to each page from the home page.
I think you are on the a good path but spend less time trying to build link and more time on quality content that is useful for the visitor.
WP will likely cause your more pain than it is worth. Makes good looking simple to manage sites from templates but they never really appear in search engines.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/17/12 8:36 AM|
I'm not really sure that you spent that much time on my site. I have a separate page for each project and have included videos and description of each project. It is still deserving some type of placement. Most of my competition that is ranking well has pictures from istock and not actual work.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||Mdlend||4/17/12 9:12 AM|
I took a look at your site and stand by what I said.
best of luck
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||kcbasementfinishing||4/17/12 5:02 PM|
My site is back :)
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||seochamp39||4/17/12 5:25 PM|
Sorry, but Kathy you don't know what you're talking about.
All my personal sites are now restored as well... & your
"They got better" comment proves your ignorance.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||seochamp39||4/17/12 5:31 PM|
I'm so glad I can come in here and say...
YOU'RE WRONG , Propaganda-bot-#228. !
KCBasement (don't know your name)... I found this thread first during my search
this morning, and I honestly felt bad that you had to receive advice from these newbies.
I attempted to post from my iPad but I was not able to, so I just said F it for the time being.
Anytime there's a dramatic change and people start talking like "They found better"... ,
"Poor internal navigation" .. "images" ... "CSS errors" ... etc etc such as Kathy & Stevie above...
you can bet it's a load of horse ish.
The complications today had nothing to do with any of the variables they spoke of, just as I predicted.

I couldn't agree with you more! I thought your comments were very helpful.
The very 1st thing I checked was site speed....wow is it slow! http://www.webpagetest.org/result/120418_K9_409AN/
Whats the dealwith the white space ie bottom of this page http://www.kcbasementfinishing.com/About.php (unprofessional).
In my opinion this site needs a lot of work!
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||RaseOne||4/18/12 1:20 AM|
See. Like I said be careful before you do anything. people are very sure of themselves in here. Good luck with your move to wordpress. Be patient.
|Re: Why did my website rankings drop||Mdlend||4/19/12 7:45 AM|
The comments in response to his questions were more directed at making his site user friendly, easier to navigate and the content more relevant to the images and topics he had on his current site. This is sometimes lost by "seo" attempts. It is one thing to get the visitor to find your site, it is another thing to "convert" them to perform a desired action or to find your site useful.
