Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 5:53 PM
I have read the FAQs and checked for similar issues:

My site's URL (web address) is: http://AldebaranWebDesign.com

Have had good traffic since 2007, suddenly this morning, all traffic via keywords from Google is gone. Checked my webmaster's panel, nothing there of note. Would appreciate anyone's comment if they see something wrong. Again, I am still in the index, but not getting traffic for ANY keywords from Google. Have applied for resubmission.

Oh, and I'm on DreamHost Shared Hosting. I've seen other folks here note their hosting companies if that helps. I've never had this happen, I follow the same guidelines. Seems like lots of folks in same boat. Please do send commentary.

I just find it a little funny .. coincidental ...

If you'd said hostgator or iPowerweb or GoDaddy that would be one thing but Dreamhost somehow stays above that gelatinous mass of crap swirling in the bottom of the hosting barrel. But when I took a look at the index page on this one... well... can you say "over-optimized"? Can you say "keyword-stuffed"? For a web designer you might have your face too close to that "web design" grindstone... sometimes you need to look at something else, something a bit more inspirational, something a bit more evocative of what you're, hopefully, really trying to do... and I don't mean just get the bills paid.

Sometimes the best advertising you can do is not what you do for yourself but what you have done for your customers. They give you all different kinds of materials to work with and hope that you'll create something for them that pops the top off the WOW meter. I know when I see that I go hunting to discover the creator... Often enough I start a dialog with them and see if we can somehow inspire each other a bit. That approach also gives you a lot more to work with than just "web design, website design, website crapola, webstuff-up-your-wazoo..." repetitions. There's a huge difference between being a competent mechanic and being an artist... especially when Google pays so many smart-and-well-educated people to manipulate the mechanics.

Well, my client gave me that testimonial, and I seriously doubt she went looking for another website to copy from. Totally coincidental. And does not explain ranking well since 2007 and suddenly dropping on Sunday night to zero traffic from Google.

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 8:15 PM
My clients are small business owners. They are not looking to WOW anyone. They are looking for simple, low cost sites that are user friendly. I am not an artist. I am an engineer. I was hoping for less mockery and more actual recommendations when posting on this blog. I am looking for help and I'm getting made fun of? Seriously? How about a little professional courtesy here and a little less sarcasm.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated webado 4/16/12 8:27 PM
OK

>>ll traffic via keywords from Google is gone

You are aware that you cannot collect keywords, search queries from Google searches anymore from visitors logged into their Google accounts, which  are becomeing more and more frequent.

That's because the referrer is no longer passed.

Only Google Analytics can still track that presumably, but any other tools including your own server-side scripting cannot.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 8:28 PM
And for those who say the root cause is keyword stuffing, let me just give you a comparison of the top 5 sites compared to mine:
"web" mine 3.67%, top 5 7.63%-10/34%
"design" mine 5.33%, top 5 3.32%-26.26%
"website" mine 8.83%, top 5 1.39%-22.22%
"seattle" mine 3/17%, top 5 1.92% - 15.15%

So before you accuse me of keyword stuffing and it's the root cause for my rankings, I suggest looking at this data, it would dispute that claim based on keyword density analysis of the home pages of the top 5 sites for my keywords.

If my keyword density was so high to trigger a penalty, why are others ranked higher with higher densities?

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 8:37 PM
This is an excellent observation - and I have indeed seen this trend in my traffic analysis, fewer and fewer keywords are being captured and tracked. I did not know the cause was people being logged into their Google accounts while searching.

So Google is forcing folks to use Google Analytics then?

Yes, while I have seen this trend, today, all day,  not a single keyword search has come through, and traffic is down to direct access only. The only traffic keywords are from Bing and Yahoo and Ask.

This is a helpful comment in terms of watching my traffic analysis.

I have completed keyword density analysis of top 10 sites versus mine (which used to be in top 10) and my keyword densities lie between lowest and highest in all cases. What would be the logic for stopping all my traffic flow?
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated webado 4/16/12 8:51 PM
Has traffic in general gone down markedly or just keyword searches in Google?
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 8:58 PM
Traffic has been "normal", 300-400 a day, until three weeks ago, when it dropped to 170 avg. It stayed that way for 3 weeks, and then last night (Sunday) it dropped to zero (from Google). Bing appears unaffected, but I don't get much traffic from Bing. So they have been very sudden drops, usually over a weekend, versus gradual drops.

Does that give you a clue?
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated webado 4/16/12 9:09 PM
I'm asking about all traffic not just from Google. As I said you can no longer identify any hits through Google from visitors signed into their Google accounts. They are hits with no referrer.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 9:11 PM
My answer was for all traffic. Normal 300-400, past three weeks 170, now 50 a day.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 9:14 PM
Furthermore, a search for my business  name Aldebaran Web Design does not come up with my business. However my website does still appear to be in the index. Just not ranking for any words at all.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Grandmaster Flash 4/16/12 9:42 PM
Hello Jill -
I am NOT piling on, if no one had responded prior my first response would be the same as the one I'll provide below:

<title>Seattle Web Design | Seattle Website Design | Small Business Website Design | Website Design Seattle | | Web Desigin Seattle | Aldebaran Web Design - Seattle WA</title>
The above IS by definition over-optimization of SEO and and clearly if Google is no longer ranking you for "Aldebaran Web Design" it is because it has determined that the title is keyword stuffed and diminished its value. Notice how short and concise the titles are of the site ranking about you for your brand.

A more suitable title may be something like:
<title>Small Business Website Design, Seattle, WA | Aldebaran Web Design</title>

In addition to the above, you have an onsite duplication issue. Google says you have over 700 pages indexed but I suspect there should be fewer. Do a site: search and after just under 250 results Google indicated that the remaining have been suppressed and asks whether you want to run the search again and include them. see

Hope this helps!

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 9:49 PM
Ok, I will modify my title tag. It did used to be shorter.

The duplication issue I discovered and fixed by adding no follow to a bunch of lines that were to help people figure out font size. The site should have 250 or so pages. I discovered that about two weeks ago and made the change. It's been there for years. But I will tweak the title tag. I need to do something.

Thank you for putting it gently :-)
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 9:55 PM
thericker:

How about this:

<title>Seattle Web Design | Small Business Website Design | Aldebaran Web Design Seattle WA</title>

Think that will pass?

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 10:00 PM
And I've added

<meta name="robots" content="nofollow" />
on the page that I believe is generating all the false pages which is this one:

http://aldebaranwebdesign.com/resources-contentfonts.php

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 10:03 PM
Some of the "pages" are actually blog articles with /feed and /trackback (wordpress blog)
I had these forbidden in my robots.txt

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Grandmaster Flash 4/16/12 10:07 PM
I believe it will help. Keep experimenting until you find a happy medium.
There may be other areas for opportunity as well.

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Grandmaster Flash 4/16/12 10:08 PM
Gotcha!  Looks like googlebot got in there before the pages were blocked with robots since there are so many indexed.

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/16/12 10:18 PM
Perhaps, I was looking into this earlier today in the Google Webmaster area to see what pages it couldn't find, and half were feed and trackback pages, so I might not have had it correctly syntaxed for last crawl.

Now I have:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin
Disallow: /wp-includes
Disallow: /wp-content/plugins
Disallow: /wp-content/cache
Disallow: /wp-content/themes
Disallow: /wp-login.php
Disallow: /*wp-login.php*
Disallow: /trackback
Disallow: /feed
Disallow: /comments
Disallow: /author
Disallow: /contact/
Disallow: */trackback
Disallow: */feed
Disallow: */comments
Disallow: /category/*
Disallow: /category/

That should stop it, do you agree?
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated webado 4/17/12 4:27 AM
You can get tag, category, archive, author pages to have a robots "noindex, follow" meta tag instead of blocking them in robots.txt (which will not remove them from the index).

You do that by using the All in One SEO Pack plugin (or whichever similar plugin you may already be using).

Thus the robots.txt will be reduced to this:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /feed
Disallow: /*/feed
Disallow: /xmlrpc
Disallow: /wp-
Disallow: /?p=
Disallow: /*trackback
Disallow: /comments
Allow: /wp-content/uploads/

Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/17/12 8:14 AM
I do have the All In One SEO Pack, and have noindex checked for Categories, Archives, Tags - however, there is no nofollow for trackback, comments or feed.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/17/12 9:21 AM
I believe I have all of the blog pages that shouldn't be indexed taken care of by robots.txt and by manually removing them from index.

Anyone get a huge number of links from updowner.com?  What is this company?

re updowner - ignore them (search this forum for other mentions).

Aldebaran:
I believe Google made some changes, I found you very easily just now with prominent sitelinks!
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/17/12 4:47 PM
Yes!! It just happened. Google did something on their end, it popped right back. Incredible, simply incredible. But I still did things to improve, but Google hasn't recrawled to see them. I am relieved beyond words.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated zihara 4/17/12 9:15 PM
For the moment it seems someone inside Google misplaced a special character in a script and many, many people using shared IP addresses took a serious hit. Correcting that seems to have put everyone back where they were in the SERPs. Hopefully, those who put some effort into fixing things that so many others saw in their sites may soon see improvement in their rankings. It's a never-ending trip... especially when Google is paying so many smart and well-educated people to continually mess with the mechanics.
Re: Have fallen out of all google rankings - still in index - feedback appreciated Aldebaran 4/18/12 9:12 AM
I heard it had something to do with my domain being marked as "parked". It was a "bug" that hopefully has been fixed. But I agree, I certainly hope all the work I did in my panic to find my way back out of oblivion helps me. I can see already my new robots.txt file has worked better and there are no more 404 pages. I will have to wait until the home page is recrawled.

A scary thing that one character could take down many small businesses, very scary.
