"The number you are calling does not accept unidentified calls." CraftGeek 8/3/09 10:55 AM
When I try to call my GV number from work, I get a  recording that states that "The number you are calling does not accept unidentified calls.". it then asks that I enter the 10 digit number I'm calling from.

The problem, however, is that the line is always disconnected while I am entering the number I am calling from.
I have call presentation and call screening turned off.

Help?

@craftgeek:

I don't recognize that as a Google Voice instruction.

What happens when you dial your GV number from other phones?

Problem solved. Mostly.
Here is what's happening:
I have "block unknown callers" turned on at my home phone. With call presentation turned off, the message I hear is the recording from the carrier (I get the same thing if I call my home number directly from work). Unfortunately, when the home phone carrier picks up the call to play the recording, control of the call must not be fully taken from GV because I can hear the "The number you are calling..." announcement but it will not hear the number I enter in response. If I dial my home number directly, I get the recording AND I am able to enter the number I'm calling from and continue the call.

As a work around, I'll disable this feature on my home number, though this will increase spam calls.

@CraftGeek:

If you really like your carrier's "block unknown callers" feature, you might, in Settings > General > Caller ID, set up to display your GV number on incoming calls.

That should get through your carrier's "block," and you could use GV to block and mark any spam calls that come through via GV.

Good point. Thanks.

I turned off call screening and enabled my GV number to show up as my caller id. My unknown calls are still hearing the message: "The number you are calling does not accept unidentified calls."

How do I disable this feature? Because the entry guard system for my building is connected to my GV number, since it is a local number in my area and I am unable to assign it to my cell phone. Without disabling this feature, I am unable to allow visitors into my building TIA

I am having the same problem but in my case I get a recording that states that "The number you are calling does not accept unidentified calls.” It then asks that I enter the 10-digit number I am calling from.
