Google Voice SMS doesn't support sending and receiving SMS from international numbers at this time. You can only send and receive SMS to phone numbers in the U.S. per http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=117527

Google Voice has never supported international SMS
Here's a link to a thread that has a lot of information about what does and does not work. Notice that it's more than a year old.
International SMS - Is that even a possibility?http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=5c09267b828e5441&hl=en
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Souljah523||6/2/10 6:13 AM|
Although it wasn't "supported", it worked for everyone the entire time until 6/1/2010. What would be the reason for Google to block this feature? I'm sure that they see that many of their members use this feature consistently. Even if they started to charge at a discounted rate vs cell phone carriers for this I wouldn't mind. I personally text my brother who is deployed to Afghanistan right now using Google Voice, and, as of yesterday, it get the same error as TMSoor. Please bring this "unsupported" feature back.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||SnerdlyBosco||6/2/10 6:22 AM|
Google Voice does not support international SMS. Although many have had success with it, others report failures. Unfortunately, as an unsupported feature, there's no telling when it might fail and no place to seek resolution when it does.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Box7184||6/2/10 6:38 AM|
It's not necessarily Google that blocked the feature. If you read through that thread, you'll discover that it's far more likely that the carrier in the other country is the one who made the change.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||MarkNY||6/2/10 8:32 AM|
While it worked, Google Voice + TextNow (iPhone app) was a fantastic duo for international SMS. I, too, would be willing to pay. Start the negotiations with the carriers Google.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Vincent Paquet||6/2/10 11:05 AM|
International SMS has never been officially supported by Google Voice but enough users started using it nonetheless for certain destinations where it worked that we had to actively prevent it until we can bill for it. We are working on a comprehensive international SMS coverage, which we plan to make available at very low prices soon.
Thank you for your patience.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||StrMca||6/3/10 2:58 AM|
From this lesson, at any-time google may starts to charge for GV ... be alert....Just they want to move all the users into their service(port into GV) then they will put a new plan (very low prices)... Be alert....
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||micasuh||6/3/10 4:49 PM|
This thread makes me sad. I think ALL SMS should be free, domestic or international. There isn't a good reason to charge for this as it's such a necessity in today's world. I think we could argue about international calling but texting should be completely free.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||joeho||6/3/10 11:39 PM|
for me, it started few days ago when I got "(650) 265-1193: Error: this message was not successfully delivered" I have been sending international SMS with no problem ever since I got GV, I guess nothing is free forever :-P and my honest opinion, I pay for GV and make international calls to Asia, and the other side always complain "volume too soft" I always have to scream at my phone for the other end to hear me.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||StrMca||6/4/10 2:36 AM|
From this scenario, I can understand we are the tester (software/product) for Google Voice sms service. Just they paid us by giving free sms till 31-may-2010. Anyone accept this...???
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||tyguide||6/4/10 10:15 PM|
It was great while it lasted. PLEASE Goog - keep the rates reasonable when you start charging so we don't get ripped off like Skype for SMS. I want to support your products - Many thanks for the many SMS messages (domestic & International) that I have been able to send to date!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||mac800||6/6/10 6:28 PM|
I for one am glad they're planning to do this. Previously you never knew if the sms actually got to it's destination, and there was no way of knowing which destinations would actually work.
Now we'll be able to (hopefully) receive and be able to send them from and to anywhere in the world. This is going to make it much more reliable.
Q: Will we be charged for receiving international sms's?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||jbhorner||6/6/10 7:04 PM|
What a poor customer service move by Google. Really, this is amateur. You have a service that is working, and then you arbitrarily turn it off...even though you know many people use the service. Worse, you have no suitable replacement lined up, and no target date stated.
This is a very arrogant move, to say the least.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||StrMca||6/7/10 2:48 AM|
what is the assurance that they wont charge for GV service and gMail in future...?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||lishi||6/7/10 3:19 AM|
What I wanna say is no matter how low the price Google will charge, I would not use it. Come on, it can't be 100 SMS for $1. And I would not do monthly plan for random international SMS. Also, it does not support other languages as far as I know, such as Chinese and Japanese, unless Google solves the problem. Also, a few friends of mine somehow can't reply to the Google number I have.
I have unlimited SMS for the domestic using, so why would go online and send SMS with a Google number that my friends don't recognize it.
Google, I love your services, but for what you did like this, I am so disappointed!!!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||masber2000||6/7/10 8:37 AM|
So this is why I'm getting those 605- number error messages! I need the international text because my fiancee lives in another country and she is pregnant with our first. Luckily I can still receive texts from her. This is very upsetting.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||sorolosystems||6/7/10 9:16 AM|
Sigh. I used the international SMS heavily for texts to the 876 area code, and I am disappointed that it has now been blocked, particularly as Google Voice calls to 876 numbers have *never* worked (you get a ringing tone, but the destination phone never actually rings and the call is never connected). I would be happy to pay for this service if the cost was reasonable (by reasonable, 10 cents / text or less). Please bring the service back ASAP.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||PLF_rock||6/7/10 9:36 AM|
wow I'm disappointed, and I wish I was at least notified!! I didn't realize this at all! this is the only reason that I'm using google voice instead of skype!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||playpolly||6/7/10 9:37 AM|
There are SMS providers out there and bulk carriers which can provide SMS's for 1/10th of a cent. SMS use negligible bandwidth and should be technically free. Skype has reduced it's charges too. For example calling India is 3c a min now. Pennytel is 2 c a min. GV needs to catch up. Infact if Gizmo5 is bought by google why are the rates different to call a location?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||acostah2||6/7/10 10:38 AM|
I waited so long for a GV invite...if Google starts charging for SMS I will then seriously consider using Rebtel instead.

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||mamibg||6/7/10 12:17 PM|
I was sending to Mexico, but as of this morning I keep receiving an error notification :( i am sooooooo sad that I can't send anymore free SMS. My bill would usually reach 100.00 in international sms, but Google Voice was a miracle when I found I could send to Mexico. MetroPC offers unlimited global SMS for only 5 dollars a month, but i'm stuck with Sprint for 2 yrs :/
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||playpolly||6/7/10 1:56 PM|
You can always call, as it's cheaper to call Mexico than SMS. Well it's upto you I guess; I fall in the same category. Try Skype for unlimited Mexixo 6$ a month. With Pennytel it's 5c a SMS so you can try that.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Searchr||6/7/10 8:01 PM|
So when is Google releasing the Plan? anything about it yet?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||rubbertow||6/7/10 9:10 PM|
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! We had mexico text working until today. But no fair! I had already started giving my number out to my friends in Mexico in order for them to send me texts and for me to reply back. Now the service is incomplete, I can't give out my GV number anymore. What am I suppose to do now???? Email...yuck
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||tomcalderon||6/7/10 9:56 PM|
It's not fair, We have to pay for the Internet to enter and send sms by google voice, and now we have to pay fees for send sms too? In that case will be more useful send sms from carriers websites for free and use skype for international calls that actually it's more cheaper!
I'm really disappointed with international sms fees, they have to be free!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||StrMca||6/8/10 2:49 AM|
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||playpolly||6/8/10 5:12 AM|
What they should've done is start deducting money from the existing promotional balance of 10c or 1$ that everyone had and have a message saying that there has been a deduction made for the same. The lowest besides FREE is 1/10th of 1cent for an international message which would be nice as you could send 10 messages for a cent.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||bbass328||6/8/10 7:58 AM|
how sad that google disabled this feature. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/8/10 9:01 AM|
I'm refunding my Google Voice credit. Any Google employee can see that international SMS was a big part of why I used Google voice. To remove a service like that without warning or a way to continue using it (as I have been for the last 6 months) is not a way to keep your customers.
Congrats Google Voice, you lost a customer.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Gabe_MN||6/8/10 9:22 AM|
99% of all questions are answered with "Money" but if they want to profit from this it should have been handled much better. For those Google Employees reading this I know you are aware of Incident Change Mangement in the IT community and this has been bungled. A change management process should minimize the amount of disruption in the environment. You have not only disrupted it but totally stopped a function and did not even communicate in advance to your users. A mass SMS text should have been sent when your last meeting decided that this feature needed to be cut.
If this was a football game, you fumbled, and judging from the Skype and loyalty responses the other team has recovered your ball.

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||oanyego||6/8/10 1:12 PM|
Am totally gutted! :( Thats how I kept in touch with my family day to day ESPECIALLY MY DEAR OLD MUM!! how is she going to feel now without her texts from her youngest son who lives far away...am serious! I checked in everyday using this, I cant afford the AT&T/T-MOBILE extortion...please Google get something sorted on this...
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Papa Bear||6/8/10 1:18 PM|
You wrote, "Why block it?"
Do you pay your wireless carrier for text messaging?
Google has the right to generate revenue throught SMS. Read http://www.itnewsafrica.com/?p=2409 about SMS revenue growth in Africa and the Middle East.
Consider Google's costs for SMS gateways, software, servers, employees, rack space in data centers, security, energy, etc.
There is no free lunch.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/8/10 1:25 PM|
Yeah, but to offer it then take it away without warning isn't going to make customers happy. Especially when they (like me) have relied on it for over half a year. A warning so we could get a new service or an ability to continue paying for the setup we've been using would be nice. Yeah, I'm sure it cost google. But they didn't do **** about it for a long time.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||ebhb2004||6/8/10 1:33 PM|
Does Google support SMS to/from Canada since calls to Canada don't begin with "011+ country +etc" but just "1+ area code", just like in the US
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||playpolly||6/8/10 1:36 PM|
Yes so far I have not noticed any problem with Canada but by my saying so I cannot be sure anymore
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||ebhb2004||6/8/10 1:57 PM|
Thank you for replying.
I just sent a SMS to a phone in Canada. No deduction from my account total but haven't heard back yet if it was received.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||tomcalderon||6/8/10 1:58 PM|
I don't think the cost is a problem for google, actually they are one of the most millionaries companies of the World.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/8/10 2:03 PM|
I don't think this is a cost problem either. Why else would they have allowed for 6+ months of free international SMS then? Companies don't let loss happen for long. I don't know what to think... Someone at Google Voice isn't thinking. I've heard it came under new management recently.

You can get a VOIP service through Local Phone that works through your PC if you wish. I have my Mobile (Verizon) number verified so I can send sms from LocalPhone as if I was sending it from my phone (internationally). It gives you a # to call for each contact you add for super low rates too (especially international). I use it to sms and call now - after Google Voice dropped the international SMS.

Is there a charge for incoming SMS ?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/8/10 5:24 PM|
You have to use the web interface to send messages. The only way to receive messages is to get a virtual telephone number or verify your mobile number (then when they send you a message it goes to your cp). Sending messages is done via the website. Haven't found a way to forward SMS to my cellphone yet like I did with Google Voice.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||minuiyer||6/8/10 5:52 PM|
well i thought when they assign a number to an internationa number tht we wanna call , it wud be like a local number , so apparently we cud send an sms to that local number which in turn wud reach the person we want to send sms to ! do i make sense?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/8/10 5:53 PM|
Yeah, I was hoping for the same thing but apparently they don't do this :( No one else does either that I know. One big thing that Google Voice had that I really liked. :( :(

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||playpolly||6/8/10 6:12 PM|
Why so Serious? Google just realized that SMS's went through and because they went through they now want to charge for it. Try Pennytel 5$ - 50 SMSs and 80 untimed calls to 70 countries. How about that?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||sorolosystems||6/8/10 6:24 PM|
Isn't Pennytel an Australian outfit? Do they support USA phone numbers? I imagine that if their servers are in Australia, the latency on a USA-USA connection should be quite large ...
Anybody else on this thread using PennyTel?

Add me to the list of people unhappy to lose GV International SMS. My wife is currently in the Philippines and this was a good way to save on Verizons 25 cent per SMS send or receive. Yeah I know I was getting something for free so why complain? Well as others have said they should have had a replacement ready to go. I'll pay for SMS although I don't think in this day and age it should be charged for. But they better be cheaper than everyone else. For now I will just send less SMS and when i do I will use Skype as they are cheaper than Verizon. Anyone else have ideas on a replacement?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||playpolly||6/8/10 7:42 PM|
Pennytel is Australian mate but you can SMS and call any number you want.
I did not particularly find Latency on a US US connection.
Infact the connections in countries with fast net connections like North America, Part of Europe, East Asia and Oz/NZ are pretty good.
I have a chrome browser extension for SMS and calling
I have a BB app which is pretty good and handy when the Smart Dial Pilot number is down (the SDP is by a US service provider so the Latency should not be a problem)
To my limited knowledge, Irrespective of where the Server is it depends upon a call routing table which uses the shortest if not the freeest route.
It's SIP based so BYOD or Soft based SIP compatible.
It has Web ANI call back and they are working one for the US where you can call the system and it hangs up on you and calls you back. That's good if you have free incoming calls. Similarly if you don't have a net connection they have SMS callback where you can SMS the system the number you want called and it calls you and connects you to the number.
Easy way of importing and exporting contacts.
Immediate credit via credit card etc. and Immediate call logs to the second unlike freakin localphone that I signed up for which charges for an unanswered call. Per second billing depending upon plan chosen. I can go on and on I wish I could copy paste :D

One way thru which i was getting bck the $30 i was spending for 'data plan' was by sending international txtz thru GV. I love Google and all its diff stuff tht they come up with and i made a lot of people start using Google services and i sent a long letter saying thnx to Google for GV. Good things never last long... nd thtz the case here too. Google... we hope tht u guyz will b giving us back the free GV Txt or atleast with a very sensible price for the international txt msgs... (keeping the fingers crossed)

Best they can reduce the text length to 80 chars instead of 160 chars. Remaining 80 chars they can put some advertising based on target mobile number... And they can give free international sms.
Just they can starts to charge 1c or 2c for each sms.
Limited free sms per day per account.

It saves me 2 bucks to buy GV mobile + in cydia haha. I was going to buy this app for the conveniene of texting. Since google has blocked this feature and I just forget about google voice.
Seriously, what so great about GV? Their international calling rates are nothing compare to Rebtel. I call Vietnam just for 3.4 centc/min which google charges 9cents/min? This is a great oppotunity for me to get rid of GV app out of my iphone.

I was still able to receive a text message from Manila, Philippines as of June 11. However, I received the same error message when I tried to reply to it. Aargh. It is now nearly two weeks since Google cut off this *cough* unsupported *cough* feature. I am beginning to doubt that it will be back anytime soon. Until Google gives some sign as to when the feature will be formally supported, I'm heading over to http://worldtexting.com. C'mon, Google, those guys offer a very similar service for free. Why can't you?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||snaimon||6/13/10 4:38 PM|
Seems that worldtexting sends messages as EMAILS. My T-Mobile German phone/SIM here in the US received an SMS that I had an EMAIL waiting. My son in Europe right now is sending me SMSs which I receive FOR FREE on this German SIM here in the US.

@minuiyer: From the above link, you can add ur contacts(local+international) thro web interface. then you will get local phone numbers of each contacts. after that, you can starts to send sms from ur mobile to local access number. they will fwd ur text to friends mobile... visit http://bit.ly/bnQXij (sms tab)...
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||tyguide||6/14/10 9:25 AM|
Thanks for Localphone.com suggestion. SMS are not free, but way cheaper than Skype (Thailand), and calls to Thailand are less than 1 cent - a third of Google Voice rate!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||sorolosystems||6/14/10 10:41 AM|
@minuiyer, @snaimon, I haven't yet tried the msg forwarding at http://worldtexting.com - but I don't see anything in the faq at http://worldtexting.com/support.php that implies it won't work. My tests of sending SMS messages to my contacts work, although it is *much* slower than the Google service - the typical delivery time of a SMS is about 8-10 minutes, while Google delivers the message in seconds, so Google's service is almost like IM, and that is why I want my Google service back. Aside from the speed difference, WorldTexting is almost as well-featured as Google's service. My messages are generally one-way, and my recipients generally don't need to reply, so I have not tested that fully. I *have* had one recipient complain that the number shown as the sender of the SMS is invalid - but I think that may be a recipient carrier problem, not WorldTexting's fault. If you are having problems, I suggest you talk to WorldTexting at http://worldtexting.com/contact.php.

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||rcy.airwave||6/14/10 8:13 PM|
Last I looked Guam was a part of the United States and in fact, Guam is part of the North American numbering plan. 1-671-xxx-xxxx is part of the AT&T nationwide calling plan as it is with other wireless carriers in the US. Why would SMS now be blocked for Guam numbers if Google voice has free US SMS as a feature? Would appreciate a response from Google team on this.
On a side note, I work for a telco and I know that many others, like me, would willingly pay for international SMS. Google just needs to inform its many users rather than just deciding one day to stop offering this without telling anyone about it. Of course, we now know that "its not a supported feature" since we've all been cut off already but this could and should have been handled differently.
You've got a great product here. Time to decide whether its something that you want to throw your weight behind and push this into the market. I'm sure many of your fans, myself included, would support this product.

I'm thankful for the numerous free international sms messages I sent but now pretty disappointed that Google decided to abruptly stop the service. I appeal to Google to resume the service again for free.

So, this is basically copying Microsoft: producing a product that made life easier and was marketed so greatly that it became be a tool which made each business who who used it dependent upon it and unable to function w/o it (each business who assisted in the development of this products' necessity in the marketplace, might I add). Later, the "updates" ended, and the product was so desirable that consumers would pay for the simplicity that it offered (though it was offered elsewhere for less money. Much like the I-Phone marketing campaign) Coincidence! :).
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||JBHIRST||6/17/10 10:11 AM|
I think this is a matter of Google wanting to make money on this feature as all other carriers charge a lot of money for international text messages, which should be essentially free... Carriers charge their members for text messaging which is a feature that uses the smallest amount of their network bandwidth and can be sent in between the real time communications.
It is unfortunate that Google is trying to figure out how to make this a revenue generative thing as opposed to promoting freedom of communication. Even if they were to eventually charge some nominal fee for this feature, they should leave it free until they can figure out how to charge us all for it...
Google's unoficial slogan is "Don't be evil"... Which I think the elimination of something very good is equivalent to being evil... However, I guess this is their 'unofficial slogan' and just like the unofficial support for international text messaging for free... May only apply when it is convenient...

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||teddyosa||6/21/10 4:58 AM|
To those that say "well there are costs". Let's get real here. I live near the Googleplex, know people that work there and have eyes, so I know Google is nowhere near going broke if they give free international texting. My husband's family is in Australia and we simply can't afford to be paying the 20 cents per text that TMobile charges. That being said, I think Google should listen to the people that say they'd be willing to pay for the texts because since their Google phone tanked (at least while they tried to sell it themselves), this could be another form of revenue. Consider all the people that used GV for international texting and they'd realize that even if they charged one penny per text, they'd be making a lot of money. I do have to say that I agree that it was poor judgement to not give warning. And if they did, they obviously didn't do it well enough for this many people to be blindsided. Hopefully they won't be hush hush about this because by the time they come around to any type of payment plan, their customer base will be gone.
BTW, epic fail on the edit button. Why have it when the only option is to delete your post? Why not say "Delete" and not "Edit".
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/21/10 8:15 AM|
@ teddyosa - check out fishtext.com and smsdiscount.com - The latter has a program you can download to your computer to send sms that way. Unfortunately, if your phone doesn't work with their java apps (fishtext has one) then it will have to be done from a PC. Other notables: cherry-sms.com.
I used to spend hundreds on Google Voice international minutes cuz it worked well with the international sms. I know other people that did the same. Google lost a lot of loyal customers and hundreds of dollars with their cutting of international sms. Not a smart move by anyone who has at least a small understanding of how business works. ---- but like you said teddyosa, I don't think $ is a concern for Google.

@minuiyer: You can send sms from ur mobile to registered local access numbers. Each and every contacts will get unique access numbers. |Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||soundwave4||6/24/10 12:04 PM|
"Guam is part of the North American numbering plan. 1-671-xxx-xxxx is part of the AT&T nationwide calling plan as it is with other wireless carriers in the US. Why would someone with an AT&T phone and unlimited US calling plan in PR be able to text me at my GV #, yet I cannot text them back with GV,
But when I call them back with my carrier's phone plan, my carrier considers it a a valid US phone number. NOT an international number as your SMS gateways are considering it.
A response to this is very much appreciated.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||sheep99dog||6/24/10 12:52 PM|
I found a workaround. Google Voice appears to be able to accept international SMS based on my testing. I use Skype to send SMS and set it up so that it sends using my Google Voice number. So, you use Skype to send, and Google Voice to receive. Not ideal but sufficient until Google gets their act together.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||china99boy||6/24/10 12:57 PM|
@sheep99dog, can you explain what you mean by using GV # with skype to send.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||StrMca||6/25/10 2:29 AM|
@sheep99dog: You can receive international sms text. But you can't send international sms from GV.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/25/10 6:14 AM|
@china99boy - What you can do with Skype is register your cellphone/a telephone and Skype will spoof that whenever you send out SMS. I, however, have found Skype's international rates to be close to what my cellphone company charges. fishtext.com and cherry-sms.com and smsdiscount.com offer much better prices.

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Artem Saveliev||6/25/10 9:13 AM|
@StrMca Actually, I am not able to receive from belarus numbers. They can sms my at&t cell no problem, but when they send to GV number nothing happens.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/25/10 10:03 AM|
International SMS is highly unreliable. For 8 bit pieces of text, you'd think there wouldn't be so much of a problem or that much of a cost.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||sheep99dog||6/25/10 11:53 AM|
As noted in my previous post, you can use a combination of Skype and GV to send and receive international SMS, respectively. The Skype can be configured so that recipients see it's coming from your GV number. Note that the association of your GV number to Skype needs to be verified. Thus, Skype to send, and GV to receive. Also, to send via Skype you've got to buy credit with them. It's 0.08 or 0.09 US cents to where I send to. The whole setup is a bit clumsy but it gets the job done.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||sorolosystems||6/25/10 12:19 PM|
For those who are looking for a *totally* free solution for international SMS, you should consider http://worldtexting.com . I have been using their service for over two weeks, and I find it reliable enough - I do ask my recipients to reply to my GV number because, for some reason, an incorrect number is sent to them. However, the minor inconvenience is bearable until GV supports international SMS - again.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Artem Saveliev||6/25/10 2:22 PM|
@sheep99dog that's exactly what i have been doing. but for some reason GV is unable to receive messages from certain international operators. it's possible they don't support unicode messages, but that seems unlikely.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||markbb||7/1/10 10:59 AM|
I understand that it was costing Google to send international tet messages - but don't just shut it off with no notice - let users know in advance you are going to turn it off, and when you do turn it off have a paid plan in place ready to go for those that rely on the service.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||eddieonofre||7/5/10 9:05 PM|
Google not disrespect
If you are planning on bill for received messages (like many operator do in USA) then it just won't work. I hope you are only going to bill for sent messages.
IF you are going to bill text messages do it reasonably do not put the 25 per message price that sucks.
Somewhere around I heard the suggestion packed of messages which would be that bad. If you let prepay for some amount of messages and then we can use it whenever we need (no more one month and then take them away messages plan)
Point 4)There are countries where the user pays for received messages as well as send messages. Keep that in mind when pricing sms.
Well this is more like a request, a little pleasure that I would love to have. Can you add MMS to google voice???
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||7/6/10 6:37 AM|
@eddieonofre - After all the threads (most of which are 3+ pages long) on international texts and a measly "soon" reply over a month ago ... do you really think Google reads this?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||MarkNY||7/6/10 8:56 AM|
When trying to send an int'l SMS, I get a different error statement than I did a month ago, instructing me to fund my account (which it already is). So...tells me Google is at least working to implement a fee-based service, as they indicated they were doing. Just wish they'd hurry up.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||elincor||7/6/10 1:12 PM|
Since when Puerto Rico is considered international? And still Google Voice is free for Canadians. Is Canada considered Domestic?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||teddyosa||7/6/10 3:09 PM|
I think it's a bit prejudice (for lack of a better word) against other countries that we can text Canada for free and not Australia, Puerto Rico and other English speaking countries. Not that English speaking countries should get free messages but why is Canada special? They're under the queen, not our President, so it's not like they're the same country. Does anyone know if Mexico is free? If not, why not?
I tried messaging family in Australia again and I got something along the lines of "Destination not supported". Way to fail Google. First your phone tanks, might as well run the rest of your services into the ground while you're at it. Heck I live close enough, I should go face palm someone at the Google Plex lol. V8 commercial style :P
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||teddyosa||7/6/10 3:12 PM|
I meant to add that they probably follow rules at their company because of the saying "If you do for one, then you have to do for all" and it should work that way with the services they provide. I'm sorry if I go against some people here that text friends and family in Canada, but if you're going to have free international texting to Canada, then "if you do it for one, then do it for all" or get rid of the free texting to Canada.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||2b3pro||7/6/10 3:42 PM|
This is a bummer... I was loving international SMS.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||ebhb2004||7/6/10 5:03 PM|
@teddyrosa When you call Canada, all you have to dial is 1 + area code + the phone number. It's not like calling another country where you have to dial 011 + the country code + the area code + the phone number
Maybe you need to recognize that Google doesn't owe you anything: just be grateful that GV is free (like everything else at Google).
Maybe you need to contact your mobile phone company and complain that, considering how much you pay them each monthly, they should give you free SMS.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||teddyosa||7/6/10 5:47 PM|
@ebhb2004 I never said Google owed me anything. If you bothered to read more than the last page, you'd learn a little something.
I don't care *HOW* you call Canada. The fact is it is another COUNTRY therefore any texts to Canada are considered INTERNATIONAL. Get it? You need a passport to enter therefore it's INTERNATIONAL and if INTERNATIONAL is out, then Canada should be out. BECAUSE IT'S INTERNATIONAL.
Dialing Australia, for example, is 011 + 2 digit area code + 9 digit phone number whereas the US is 1 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit phone number. A whole 3 digit difference. And they were able to accommodate before so it's not like we're asking them to do something they haven't already done.
I don't have to be grateful to Google for anything and you should learn that. Should I be grateful to you if you feed stray kittens? No. I don't know you and I don't need you. Same as Google. I'm glad they're around to raise the bar for everyone else, but they aren't a NECESSITY, if that isn't too much to comprehend.
My main complaint (had you bothered to read at all) was that they gave no warning. It would have allowed everyone using this service to let friends and family that are overseas know rather than cutting everyone off and the friends and family overseas just stop receiving messages. Common sense, but then again I guess that's why you missed my point.

@SnerdlyBosco, actually, because an employee posted at all, they consider this problem "answered" and probably do not revisit posts that they label as answered. Very corporate of them, I say.

@Sidhun ...pardon my ignorance , but what does that mean?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||MarkNY||7/19/10 9:21 AM|
@minuiyer, when I try to send a an international SMS through TextNow on my iPhone, I get the message about needing to fund the account, which is a different message than if I try to send straight from Google Voice. I am not exactly sure how TextNow works, but it uses my Google Voice number and Google's servers. And it only started happening recently that I get this different error message. So I think not only is Google prepping int'l SMS but they plan on allowing 3rd party services like TextNow to use it. I just wish Google would hurry up. Using FishText works to send int'l SMS, but it is not nearly as convenient.

Also we have a shortcode version of our software where it sends and receives SMS messages via HTTP.
BUT we want to create a port over to Google Voice so our customers can use FireText's Mobile Marketing Entertainment features with your Google Voice number.
Any guidance would be great!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||lynch820||8/1/10 3:46 AM|
I thought I was the only one. I used to send international texts to Ireland no problem, but since last month I've been receiving the error message stating that I don't have enough credit (when in fact I have plenty of credit). I can't believe Google would just stop international texting without telling anyone. I thought it was my phone.
The most annoying and irritating point is I can still recieve tests from people in Ireland and I click on reply and write a text back and send and a few seconds later get a message saying it cannot be sent. So, I have to send the text from my original cellphone number. I have just ended up telling people to use that original number now. I'm pretty upset. Google voice is not at all what I hoped it would be :o(
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||8/1/10 11:39 AM|
What really ticks me off is the fact that out of all the forums on the Google Voice help forums - the longest ones by far are the International Text threads. The users clearly want it, we're willing to pay, but instead Google hasn't done anything for almost two months other than shut it down. The whole "we're gunna do something soon" post by Google Employees has turned out to be bs, no surprise there. Pretty pathetic imo, especially when Google has the money and manpower to do something so simple as this.

The sms feature is the only reason I signed up to GV/ Please get your act sorted and turn it back on. to say you turned it off until you figure out how to bill for it is absurd and wrong. thousands of people rely on it.
I have no problem being billed a small fee for the sms feature as long as its cheaper than the voice calls. this is outrageous. I am looking at other options now as I need the international text and calls.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||jrashe||8/25/10 6:30 PM|

I understand why they block the sending of international text messages but I don't understand why Google blocks incoming international text messages. The message is paid for by the sender! It does in fact sound like google is trying to make money both ways and just are not setup to identify and charge for incoming messages. They certainly now when your sending and could charge for it now!

Hi! Minu... If u would read my post again u cud c tht I've clearly stated tht I downloaded it on iPhone ... not iPod... So I won't b able to giv u suggestions on hw to make it wrk on an iPod. But if u hav an iPhone, try it coz it's wrkng fine for me to send txt msgs on a ph in Saudi Arabia, tht is under a service provider which is not even seen on the list of compatible service providers given by HeyWire on their site. Hope my reply helps. Take care...

minuiyer: Yes it works on the iPod Touch. Not sure why it isn't working for you. Please keep in mind you can't expect someone to tell you what went wrong when all we get is that "it didn't work" and a bunch of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I can entered so many numbers,But I can't create gvoice number.Any help for me?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||11/21/10 7:15 AM|
You have to have those international numbers text you - then Google Voice creates the dynamic USA number for them.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||dawnavon||12/4/10 12:30 AM|
@BigMcGuire, that doesn't work for me.. :( I've sent and received international text messages, and now I can't send them anymore.. :(
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||teddyosa||12/4/10 12:56 AM|
OMG how far behind are you people? This hasn't worked since June!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||siva.shanmukh||12/4/10 7:05 AM|
It works in my college network but not in my BSNL network!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||12/5/10 7:49 AM|
International SMS works for some people but not for most. Sad though, because from the # of pages in this post and other "international sms" posts - it is something people REALLY want and would be willing to pay for. (I know I am one of those).
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||temirov||12/17/10 5:21 PM|
I use GV as my primary phone number and I just bumped into it: I am unable to text to my friend who is visiting NY from another country. I don't mind paying for international SMS but instead the feature is BLOCKED? That's retarded
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||arielcarrasquillo||12/19/10 11:30 AM|
Puerto Rico is a Commowealth of the Unites States of America. If I don't get charged from my mobile service provider " Sprint" why should I get charged by Google Voice? I understand that Google should come up with a way of providing innovation telephony services, but I think we as United State Citizens born in US Territory ( Puerto Rico) should at least receive the benefit of sending SMS Messegaes to the island of Puerto Rico thru Google Voice.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||12/20/10 12:03 PM|
A lot of us are really disappointed with the way Google is handling international SMS. Welcome to the club.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||alexhir||12/27/10 7:42 AM|
That doesn't make any sense, why would google sell "Credits" and not let you use them ?
I just purchased 60 USD$ thinking I could use it for international SMS or even Calls, but no no.... Please advise.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||SnerdlyBosco||12/27/10 7:53 AM|
The credits can be used to make voice calls.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Machy||1/3/11 4:00 PM|
6 months later and still nothing has changed. sweet. Guess I'm stuck paying 25 cents on each sms I send. lovely.

|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||1/14/11 7:01 AM|
Agreed with StrMca ----- Localphone is the best and most google like. If you choose the correct USA area code, you can get dynamic USA numbers that will forward to your international friends/family - just like Google Voice. Really nice!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||angelcar||1/19/11 8:09 PM|
Puerto Rico shouldn't be considered international. You FAIL, Google.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||andreideen||1/28/11 10:17 PM|
To Vincet Paquet (best answer): I just hope that as soon as you get that issue resolve, about the billing, let us know. I am paying for 2 cellphones and my land line and by the way is a lot of money so paying is not the problem as far as is a good deal and that we can have a reliable communication.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||gabopagan||2/4/11 5:24 PM|
Google blocking SMS to Puerto Rico is retarded. Puerto Rico is USA, hell we use the same plans/mobile providers than mainland!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||mamibg||2/5/11 3:44 AM|
TEXTFREE.... Download it now from the Android Market. U wanna send international sms for free??? Try it! I've been using it on my iphone since Google voice went public and terminated international sms. U get a local phone number. On the apple version u can already make voip calls and send pic messages. Hope to see it soon in Android as well. Textfree is the best.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||StrMca||2/7/11 3:00 AM|
@mamibg: pls let me know exact android app name or website for TextFree.

@mamibg: Many Thanks. Cheers.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||2/7/11 7:18 AM|
I'm a big fan of TextFree now. I've sent probably 30+ text messages to family in Peru over the last few days. Many thanks to Mamibg for letting the G-V community know!!!! You made my day. Maybe this will also encourage Google Voice to offer free International SMS?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||ramajam||2/9/11 3:02 PM|
since I don't call internationally, I don't have an issue with this. I like the convienence of answering a text or sending one from my pc. When they start charging for THAT then I'm done. Other than that, I don't care. They have advertisers, they should get more if they need to add a service but they should not charge for what is free to begin with.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||amberxrenee||2/10/11 9:34 PM|
So.. I signed up for this and added money to my account thinking that I could use it for the international text messages. My problem is that on my cell phone, I can send them to The Gambia, but I can't receive any. I realize by now that Google Voice won't allow me to receive them either. That's fine, since they still have the lowest rates for calls. But does anyone know of something I can use to receive them? Like I said, sending texts isn't a problem, but it would be nice to get a response..
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||modifiers||3/15/11 1:37 AM|
Looks like the only option for people who want to receive and send International SMS now is to use Skype Out since Skype already let's you add credit and deduct international text.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||3/26/11 8:55 AM|
Please Google? International SMS? Almost a year now and nothing.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||bevhoward||3/26/11 10:50 AM|
fwiw, until this becomes an option in GV, I've been using http://ipipi.com for sending international sms messages for almost as long as sms has been available.
While it's not free (15cents/msg is the most expensive) it's the only international sms option that I have found that covers most destinations.
Hope that this information is of value.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||4/7/11 10:56 AM|
Google Please? I'd gladly pay to use Google since everything goes to my Google. But having to log into fishtext, cherry-sms, and others is just annoying.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Gurl1dr||4/10/11 4:48 AM|
I just joined Google Voice and am loving it, BUT I did purchase Google Credit purposely to send international texts only to find out that I couldn't send them cos "destination was not supported." So now I'm having to use them to call and it's more expensive than if I call direct. I could have used that money on another service had I found any info. before I purchased it concerning international texts. Otherwise I am very happy with Google Voice and recommending it to all my friends. I think Google Voice should compensate me with commission credits to my acct...lol
Until they enable international texting services, I found redoxygen/com. You can sign up for free trial for 30 days and you get 100 free texts to any mobile number in the world, and there are no apps. to download, etc. They activate your acct. and text you with your cell phone confirmation code to enter when prompted during sign-up. And then you receive an email with your password to log in and use your account.You might give it a try! You send web to destination number texts from computer and replies are sent to your email or phone whichever you choose. Hope this helps!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||AlexGray||4/15/11 8:12 AM|
This is PISSPOOR. I start to regret trusting google for my communications more and more each day. It just doesn't send the text. No indication why... It just fails. I didn't even know that 787 was puerto Rico. If it has a 1 in front, we should be able to SMS. And I have $ on my account.. If you need to charge me, do it! Simply failing to operate as any phone would should could is inexcusable. Pull it together, you're supposed to be a LEADER.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||annc||4/24/11 5:05 PM|
This is bad. I've had this since Google Voice since it started and have been texting internationally. Now, can't do it. Not even from my computer.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||annc||4/24/11 5:07 PM|
BTW, does anyone know what happens to international texts we are sent? The only number people have for me is my GV number. Does that mean no one overseas can text me?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||4/27/11 2:15 PM|
My relatives in Peru can text me just fine. I use my Google Voice to receive international SMS because Verizon Wireless CHARGES .... for receiving international texts even though I pay for international SMS. They just have to type our number in correctly.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Alfre||4/27/11 2:20 PM|
Yes, I can also receive SMS messages from outside the U.S. to my Google Voice. Currently Google Voice does not support sending outside the U.S. and some limited countries. When they were testing in beta, we were able to send and for FREE. It's a pity that they do not support this feature any more. I don't mind to pay for the international, but at least have this option would be nice.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Totic||5/14/11 5:10 PM|
Oh come on, its been a year already start charging us and get it over with! Come on!! Arriva Arriva!
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||5/17/11 10:27 AM|
@ Totic. Seriously!!! I've been waiting for this since forever... The "soon" promise was insult to injury in my opinion. If Fishtext can offer international sms for 1.5 cents a message.......... Google should be able to do much better.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||Oldarney||6/6/11 2:07 PM|
I can't text anyone because I'm on vacation over seas... can somebody fix this? It's been over a YEAR.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||CharliePrince||6/8/11 10:19 PM|
when exactly is GV going to support international sms even if they do charge for it?
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||BigMcGuire||6/10/11 1:38 PM|
@ CharliePrince - That's what we've been waiting for OVER a year when ... a year ago we were given a "will be resolved soon, please be patient" answer. It's how Google does things.
I'd rather be giving Google Voice my $$$ but they would prefer I give my money to Fishtext instead. They probably don't care, they make billions already :P.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||monks7ue||6/28/11 10:17 AM|
This is Sad. Way way back (in internet terms) Google employees said in Jun 2010, that they are working to monetize the international text. I don't mind paying but it should atleast be supported? it is June 2011 and most useful international texting feature shows "Destination not supported".
I hate paying ATT 45c for a single text
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||gotvino||7/21/11 7:08 AM|
Why is Puerto Rico international? It is a US territory and all of the mobile carriers are US carriers. This is ridiculous.
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||gregory.peoples||7/21/11 7:26 AM|
apparently sms is not supported at all let alone international.... right now i can only receive msgs from other gv numbers... can send sms fine but can not receive msgs at all on desktop or mobile app... kind of sad
|Re: International SMS sending/receiving as of 06/01||SeanA001||8/21/11 5:23 PM|
Can you confirm the latest update on when international SMS will be available? Willing to pay a modest fee for this service, but just need to understand the plan for when this will be available.
Specific country in question: south africa
