|SMS to 406 from GV website - should these go through?||AdamHasaVoice||5/19/09 4:18 PM|
I've added the 406 #s as mobile numbers in my Contacts. But the last couple times I've tried, sending an SMS from the GV website to one of those 406 numbers hasn't gone through. Should it? SMS messages from GV website to the contacts' actual mobile phones have all appeared to go through successfully.
Is the 406 number associated with my cell phone #, or my GV #? I would think the association should be with the GV #, so if I change cell phone #'s, the association still holds, and I should be able to add that # to the entries in Contacts, so I should be able to SMS to it from the website.

You use the 406 numbers from your cell or any other registered forwarding phone on your account and not the GV site. Send the SMS directly to the other cell number when using the web site interface.

Hillborough, if that's the case, it underscores the need for GV/Contacts to make the 406 # display automagically when you view/export the contacts.
Let's say I didn't put the 406 #s in my GV Contacts, and lets say I lose my phone. To program in the contacts in my new replacement phone, where do I look to find the 406 numbers for all my contacts who have them?

I list the persons 406 number in the notes section of their contact record as a backup in case my phone fails or is lost. That way it is also available when you export a backup copy of your contacts to your computer which you should consider doing on a regular basis in case of a system failure at GV.

Similar to Hillsborough, I have the 406s listed as an alternate phone. One I don't try to reach from the GV website, but which does work wonders from my mobile.

Yes! We need a way to assign or someway just have a 406 alias for every number in our contact list. I love GV but there are a lot of mental hurdles to jump to 1. keep everything organized on my phone and 2. keep people from seeing my old (ie. real) cell number. As this thread highlights - sms to your contact's mobile # when you're going through the web interface but sms to their 406 # when you're coming from your phone.

GV has all the data they need to make an SMS from the GV website to a contact's 406 # work. So I don't see why they couldn't make it work. Maybe it's on their list.
Has anyone tried calling a 406 # from the GV website? Do those go through, or what?
I guess one argument against me (putting 406 in as mobile in contact record) is that this could be very confusing for people who have contacts in Montana -- how would you tell the GV 406 from the contacts' actual phone numbers? All the more reason for GV to automagically display the contacts' 406 #'s when you view/export contacts I say :)

I just tried calling my friend's 406 # from the GV website -- it doesn't work, it just rings and rings and rings (etc, etc).

I think the key to using the 406 numbers efficiently is organization. I have everyone -- that I have a 406 number for --- listing their "mobile" as the 406 number. That way it is the default option for texting using my BlackBerry. I also use the Google Sync, program to help keep my info synced online. While using the GV web interface I make sure that I send a Text to the "other" number. The Key is to keep the information organized and consistent throughout.
406 numbers should only be used by Cell phones or LandLines phones and not from the Web
