Do you have already have Google Voice (Y/N)?
If so, do you have a Google number (Y/N)?

Post your question or report below (please include specific details and error messages, if applicable):

Are you talking about people that calls you? If so, you will have to add them into your contact list for them to have their name displayed. Callers that are not in your contacts will only show phone number and location. This is because Google Voice doesn't you the CallerID services but rather CPN that gets the number information even if blocked by caller.

No. If I call someone, what do they see on their caller ID. They see Washington DC and my number. Instead of Washington DC, I wish that they could see my name, that's all.

thetrudz,
Consider yourself lucky.  Someone else in this group reported that Google Voice appeared as the name on the Caller ID.  My ID gives my location the same as yours.  I'm so happy it doesn't say Google Voice.  :)

I guess so then...seeing GV on the caller ID does stink more. LOL.

That's something you can submit as a suggestion. This was the case with most cellphone provider just few years ago before most started using CallerID option.

If you call someone from Google Voice or from any phone number you broadcast just a phone number. It can be broadcast in different forms.  Your phone company may add contact info to it using their database of customers but it is often just stripped away before the call is delivered so only the number makes it to the other end. If you call a Cell phone the number is cross referenced with the persons contact list on the cell phone. If a match is found the name of the contact is displayed otherwise it displays a location and phone number that persons phone carrier looked up unless you blocked your number. If it connects to 911 or a toll free number the information can't be blocked by traditional means. If you call a home phone the number can be cross referenced to the receivers phone company database instead of the persons personal contact book. In the event of calling from VOIP phones like Voinage, Magic Jack or from a cell phone to 911 then E911 is used to cross reference location, phone number and Contact info. Sorry if I over complicated this but the answer here is the information displayed on the caller ID is only as complete and accurate as the Caller ID system the receiver of the call uses. The only aspect you can change is your phone number. So just have your friends add your Google Voice number to their cell phone and they will see your name. Nothing you can do when calling traditional home phones yet.

I am a repossession agent and it would be VERY helpful if I could get a name to show other than the city that my number is registered to.

Whenever a call is received by any telco, they do a CNAM lookup on the number.  (CNAME is the callerid name) Google must submit it's numbers to the CNAM databases for that to work.  Otherwise, if the telco doesn't find a CNAM entry for the GV number, the next best thing to do is use the City and State instead.

Sounds like chaos.  Is there any way for me to get my name and GV number registered with any or all telco(s)?
