Can I Reprogram A Vonage/Linksys Router ATA to Work with Google Voice GTalk? Seldeen 12/31/10 3:56 PM
Hi, I have google voice, a google number, and use gChat.  My google voice is set up to ring my computer/gChat so that if anyone calls my google number, my computer rings and I can answer the call on the computer.  I want to reprogram my vonage/linksys router to act as a web browser that logs into gmail/gChat automatically and acts like a browser.  If a call is forwarded from the google number to gChat, the handset connected to the router will ring.  I also want to be able to dial out from the handset; so if I take the phone off the receiver, it sends messages to the gmail that mimic clicking on the "make a call" feature and then converting keys pressed on the phone to inputing numerals into the call box dialog.  This would be a super cool hack if it's possible.  Any advice is appreciated!

Your logic is almost "right on the money" but you have a few details wrong.

An ATA used for a Vonage account would be "locked" (hardwired) so it will only work with Vonage. If you Google search the Internet you can find web pages that will show you hot to "jail break" your Vonage ATA without ruining it.

For about $55, you can buy an "unlocked" Linksys/Cisco PAP2T-NA Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) that is easily configured for use with a SIP account (see Sipgate, below) and Google Voice.

By the way, an ATA doesn't "act like a browser". An ATA is a digital communications device that can be configured to work with a SIP telephone account and place and receive phone calls over POTS (Plain Old Telephone System).

...the handset connected to the router will ring...

Your phone must be connected to an ATA which is connected to your router. You connect a plain old fashioned "modular jack" analog telephone, not a handset. You need an actual telephone, whether it's a cheap $10 special, or a modern $100 wireless model, it must be a phone, not just a handset.

Google Voice user EasternPA collaborated with other users and did a fabulous job of documenting in detail how to use GV with various telephone technologies, including ATAs, here:

This is incredibly helpful.  I think it understand it all (too bad I can't get Sip Sorcery account, but working on it) and if it works, will save me $300/yr once I ditch vonage.  Thanks!
