WRT #8: Shouldn't the SMS be available on your GV account if your phone is marked something other than mobile?
Ah, now I see it - your title should read "Top 10 reasons you're not receiving SMS or text messages through Google Voice on your cell phone".

You are sending from your forwarding cell phone to your GV number (it does not consistently work in my experience, could be a loop issue).

#. You have explicitly asked your cell phone company to disable texting for your account.

1. The sender sent an MMS message, not an SMS message.

9a. The sender is your bank trying to SMS you a pin for security purposes, although this is less a reason and more a problem.

@Adam--that's something I didn't know. It's too bad, too, and I hope there's a way that this can be fixed--maybe by forwarding SMS to our email.
@Thunder--I hope they fix that.
@Snerdly--I changed my forwarding phone--I had the cell phone unchecked. We'll see if that fixes it.

Kudos to Google for getting SMS working at all. I look forward to the fix for 9.

Call screening should have no effect on SMS function.

@SnerdlyBosco, the top ten would make a great troubleshooting tool for different functions.
|Re: Top 10 Reasons You're Not Receiving SMS or Text Messages in Google Voice||adamprato||6/25/09 2:25 PM|
Snerdly - I removed my msg.
It was a coincidence that my sms started working after I disabled call screening.
I'm a new user (got my invite on 6/19). I'm testing all the possibilities, but as recently as yesterday, people could not sms me from the GV interface (let alone from their phones).
This morning GV SMS's started coming through, and at the moment an AT&T user's sms came through, but vzw still does not. I'll hold off any further reporting until I have 100% concrete proof (but trying to find people willing to help me test has been tough).

Since my last comment was a bust:
1) You're a new GV Beta user using a new GV NPA-NXX, and SMS routing for your number isn't yet set up.
- I got my invite on 6/19, and set up my account right away.
- SMS sent from any carrier doesn't work, and SMS from GV would return an error from GV's phone number:
* (650) 265-1193: Error: this message was not successfully delivered. 9:24 AM
- As of 6/25, SMS from GV and from AT&T would work. As of today, SMS from TMO and VZW still don't work.
(by "work" I mean sms's delivered to google voice using the web interface, as opposed to being received by google voice and then forwarded to my mobile device)

I can definitely receive Verizon, and I'm pretty sure a few of my other replies today were also non-Verizon, but will have to wait until tomorrow to verify. I know that at least one AT&T person and one Sprint person could receive my messages, but their replies were not being received by GV web interface or my phone. :(

Yomiko, the service still isn't released to the mass public, so this is just the small price to pay for being early users. As of today my problem was resolved by some folks who "work with google":
Them: Test message from Google Voice. 6:46 PM
Me: Who is this? I get SMS from GV, sprint, and AT&T. I do not get SMS from TMO or VZW. 6:49 PM
Them: This is a test message from a Tmobile phone so you should also receive from Verizon now also. 6:50 PM
Me: Confirmed. I received a message from VZW and your TMO. In 160 characters or less, who are you and what was the resolution? :) 6:52 PM
Them: We work with Google and the issue was a configuration change for your number with gateways between the carriers to ensure messages get delivered to the 6:55 PM
Them: right place. 6:55 PM
Me: Great. Thanks for your help "We work with google" :) 6:56 PM
Them: No problem sorry you had the issue to begin with! Enjoy! 6:57 PM

How long after you submitted your ticket did it take for them to reply and fix it? Just curious.
And yes, I've been an avid beta user of multiple google products, so I fully understand the implications of alpha's and beta's :)

Check above. I got the account on 6/19. By 6/25 GV/AT&T/Sprint worked, by 6/30 VZW/TMO worked. Though I think for the latter, I had to ask a googler friend of mine for a helpful push for my specific problem. That said, they do appear to be working the kinks out of new SMS numbers.

#1. Your GV number is recognized as a landline, not an SMS-enabled mobile phone. Therefore, users get an "Invalid Mobile Number" error when trying to SMS your GV number. That's what's happening to my GV number and it is a huge dealbreaker!!
|Re: Top 10 Reasons You're Not Receiving SMS or Text Messages in Google Voice||forand||7/2/09 1:15 PM|
@Parm289 While I don't know exactly where the setting is, have you made sure that at least one number is listed as "Mobile Device" in your preferences? Others have mentioned this with respect to not getting SMS.
|Re: Top 10 Reasons You're Not Receiving SMS or Text Messages in Google Voice||Parm289||7/2/09 1:26 PM|
Yes, the first number I added was my cell and is correctly labeled Mobile. SMS messages do not show up in my GV mailbox or on my mobile phone. I am sure that the problem I stated above, that my GV# is being recognized by carriers as a landline, is the culprit due to the errors receieved by the senders.
|Re: Top 10 Reasons You're Not Receiving SMS or Text Messages in Google Voice||MAMBOLERO||7/30/09 3:43 PM|
Issue number 9, "The sender is using a website" also includes CALLWAVE, most unfortunately. I even have my GV number registered with CALLWAVE and (a) can't send to myself via the Callwave widget on my Dashboard (a useful test), and (b) all my Callwave pals say they receive a message when sending to my GV number that it is "not a valid mobile" number.
Yes, I know this is the price we pay for being tele-adventurers, and I'm mostly okay with that. However, I hope ::::fingers crossed, candles lighted:::: we GV'ers can look forward to receiving SMS via our GV number no matter what system (Callwave, Skype, Facebook) our friends, family, and colleagues are using to send text messages by.
At the moment, this issue reminds me of the interoperability challenges of many years ago when I used my first cellphone to text someone. That particular phone allowed the user to send cutesy graphics to illustrate the text messages (SMS, not MMS). However, someone forgot to mention that only a recipient with the same phone would ever actually view my thoughtfully selected and illustrated texts.

4. Your custom ring schedule for your mobile device is in a do not ring periodWHAT? I do NOT want it to ring my phone at $5 a minute, but I do want the texts. Why would telling it not to call block texts? It sure doesn't say the schedule applies to texts in the interface! If for some reason they can't just let the texts checkbox work as one would expect, without influence from the "calls only during" configuration, can they instead ask for a schedule for texts like it does for calls?
The whole reason I want Google Voice is to AVOID getting calls on my phone, not to have to accept them just to get texts to go through!

Click on SMS from application providers (e.g. Skype, Bank of America, etc.) are not working.
Read text and click on Report if it applies to you
