GV is not intended for fax use but you could make it work with a lot of effort and some concessions where you lose functionality. Just get a free e-fax type of service until GV adds it as a feature. You can suggest it as one of the features at the page below.
I hope this has answered your question, please click yes if it has to mark topic as answered. Thanks

Efax.com does free receipt; Myfax.com does free send.
Google search is your friend.

Google search: Efax free

Be careful with efax free, if you receive too many pages (I think more than three) in a month your account is suspended unless you upgrade to the paid version. This also includes if someone spams your fax number.

It's 20 pages max in 30 days, but your caution is a good one.

@SnerdlyBosco If you go to the eFax Message Center and mark those messages as Spam, do you know if they still count against the limit?

I don't know much about eFax, other than having used them to receive the infrequent fax from someone who can't email a pdf or doc file.
And, as Google Voice has made faxing one of its "vote for" features, I wouldn't be surprised to see it become part of GV's future.

I would like to see incoming fax added as a feature to GV

Outbound Faxing through Google Voice.
This is how you fax using google voice.
Have your fax machine in the phone outlet.
Bring a phone from another room still in the phone outlet. (You may need a long cord)
Dial your google voice # on the phone. Hit * to access account. Enter 4 digit pin.
Press 2 for dial a number.
Go to the fax machine and input the fax Number followed by the # sign. (Hang up the phone while dialing)
You will here "this is a free call" and the fax will begin.

You don't need an extra phone.
On my fax machine I entered the following steps:
GV number (without area code) > Pause > Star > Pause > 4-digit GV PIN > Pause > 2 > Pause > 10-digit destination Facsimile Number (without 1+) > Pound > Pause
Note, you may not need the Pause after the # sign and I found that on my old fax machine I shouldn't press the off hook button.

Both Work Fax and Home Fax are now on the pulldown selection when you add a phone number in Contacts. Is GV about to provide a facsimile solution?

I assume the change you note has more to do with good contact management than it does as a forecaster of services.
Still, I hope...

Your assumption is correct.

It doesn't appear that the origina question was answered. If you have efax or some other service, you do you enter the verification code to forward to the efax number? There is no keypad and the efax number is controlled by efax who then forwards faxes to your email. There is no fax machine involved and no keypad.
|Re: Can you use google voice for a fax???||robearbeach||3/31/10 1:19 PM|
I use it with an eFax partner called onebox. In onebox, you can forward your onebox number to another phone. You set up your one box number to forward to a different phone in a web interface. Then you add your onebox number to whatever gv number you want to use for fax. The phone you forwarded to rings, then you input the verification code from google. They you go into onebox and turn off call forwarding to that phone. They you turn off all of the google features like call screen and stuff and then faxes to the google voice number go to your onebox then via pdf to email.

I don't see an answer to the original question. Is there any reason why I can not set up another google voice number to be a fax number? Can't I program any number into gv to be the number that answers, and use my home line and connect the fax machine and have it answer on the fifth ring. I could continue to use my current gv number to be my regular voice number and have it ring my cell and home and have it forward to voice mail on no answer.

kjotis - If you set up a GV number and dedicate it to just your home landline, then yes, the theory could work. Otherwise, you'd have to babysit the fax machine and have the fax answer manually because other phones/voicemails/answering machines might pick up before the fax gets a chance to. I've noticed a slight problem though. When I have an incoming call, the phones that GV is forwarding to don't ring as long as if it were a direct call to my phones. It would have to be a trial and error for incoming fax calls to see how many times it *actually* rings so you could adjust your fax answering rings accordingly.
For outgoing faxes, just use PapaBears directions.

i really like voice transcription.
but i'd gotten used to receiving faxes through my verizon voice mail and then printing to an alternate fax number. this way, I don't need a line for my fax and it doesn't mess with my phone calls...
