How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? mrnedb 2/26/09 1:38 PM
Thanks to Steegle for clarifying who can post comments using page settings.
How may one add a comment box for visitors - NOT owners or collaborators?

Adding widgets/embedded html code always produces an error prompting removal.
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Steegle 2/26/09 2:11 PM
You can't.

You can add a Google Spreadsheet and Form: try searching this forum for that and you'll find many suggestions.
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Liv 2/26/09 2:20 PM
Hi mrnedb,

As Steegle said, there isn't a way to do this directly, but there are a number of ways of letting your visitors make comments. Check out this topic for more ideas:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sites/thread?fid=028849804037d0fb000463b713747567&hl=en

As to how to not let owners or collaborators comment:
If you have a manageable number, try sending an e-mail letting them know that you would like to reserve whatever option you choose for your viewers and let them know how you would prefer your owners/collaborators to contact you.

Good luck,
Liv

That is so a$$ backwards!  Who was asleep at the wheel when they came up with that gem of logic?  Gee in order to "add comments" to a page or "post",  a user should have the rights to edit the the whole page.  Hmm.. a big button at the top .. "Edit page"  or small link at the bottom " Comment" ..  just brilliant!

Why even bother having the comments feature!

And don't get me started about lacking Google Friends Connect integration!

I guess once the Google UE team moves beyond the simple search box with a button,  things go to pot.
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? julijuli 4/27/10 9:03 AM
I'm having the same sickening problem too. I really need a private chat box in my google site only for my visitors and not some random stranger's conversation in the public chat box. Someone suggested to input the URL for a comment box that I have with shoutmix, but it's not a URL, it's some coding thing which i cannot find anywhere to embed in googlesites. please help!

<!-- Begin ShoutMix - http://www.shoutmix.com -->
<iframe title="juli" src="http://www4.shoutmix.com/?juli" width="160" height="400" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto">
<a href="http://www4.shoutmix.com/?juli">View shoutbox</a>
</iframe>
<br /><a href="http://www.shoutmix.com" title="Get your own free shoutbox chat widget at ShoutMix!">ShoutMix chat widget</a><br />
<!-- End ShoutMix -->
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Steegle 4/27/10 9:35 AM
@julijuli
Use the Edit Page  button, then Insert, then More Gadgets... then got to Featured and add teh Embed Gadget and paste this code into it.

@julijuli I also answered this in a different thread. I tested it at http://sites.google.com/site/k8omsbob/test

Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? jallis33 4/30/10 4:53 PM
I have been reading all the comments and suggestions about adding the speadsheet box for comments.  Do you need to add this everytime you make a post?  I have a page( miniblog or announcements template) where I would like vistors to comment on whatever  post but I haven't figured out if i have to add the spreadsheet fix to every post.  It's funny because google sites has the comment box for collaborators already but it's not useable for general public comments if your site is open to everyone.  Frustrating, my google site is perfect except for this.
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? sudtaps 4/30/10 10:58 PM
well there is another way as I found out at www.raveen.net/comments. This will tell you to how to create and embed feedback form for visitors

Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Steegle 5/1/10 8:14 AM
@sudtaps
You have missed the point there.  jallis33 wants to make comments available on every post made on an announcement page, which would mean that you would need to add an individual spreadsheet and form to each post.
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? sudtaps 5/1/10 10:34 AM
hmm u r right steegle.

Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Giantbean 5/26/10 1:21 PM
Why is Google ignoring this issue, there are a tone of people with this problem and a tone of posts spread throughout the help forum with people asking the same question. " why can only collaborators (who can already edit the entire page) make comments and not general site visitors?"

I have a blog added to my Google site but all I really want is a comment box. I have made the blogger site for this purpose. The idea is I embed the blog in the site and people can leave comments  in the iframe thus creating a simple limited forum. I used the Ultimate iframe gadget so I could limit what part of the blog page shows up on the Google site. It all looked great but then I tested leaving a comment.

When testing the site redirects the user away from the Google site and takes them to the blog. I want the iframe to contain the site with out redirecting but even testing multiple iframe gadgets and html I cant stop posts from moving the user away from my site.

I have tested other gadgets as well as embedding a full fledged forum, and using Raveens " http://www.raveen.net/comments/create " method. None of them work like I want. The full forum is to much and Raveens method is to little.

shoutbox  is ugly and has no moderation, http://sites.google.com/site/annuairevin/a-shoutbox-in-a-page

google talk only works with Google (g-mail)http://sites.google.com/site/annuairevin/tips-and-tricks-for-google-sites
not all my visitors use it.

 I dont see chat tested at t http://sites.google.com/site/k8omsbob/test

I cant get this http://drgoss.org to work

http://sites.google.com/site/hkhadra/Contact-me/comments looks nice but I'm note sure how to use the code or if it will work with my blog.

Any other ideas.

Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? CSN Culinary Club 7/20/10 11:16 PM

Step 1:
Log in to your Google Site.

Step 2:
Select the page that you wish to place your comment box in.

Step 3:
Find & Click "Edit Page"

Step 4:
Find and Click "Insert", then select "More Gadgets".

Step 5:
In the "Search Box", enter "Code Wrapper" and select the "Code Wrapper" gadget.

Step 6:
After selecting the "Code Wrapper" gadget, a "Set Up Your Gadget" Box will appear. Under "Embed Code" copy and paste the HTML Code found in this link...

http://www.htmlcommentbox.com/

Here is the code itself below. (it might not show up as well on this forum, so just follow the link and copy and paste for yourself.

<!-- begin htmlcommentbox.com -->
<div id="HCB_comment_box"><a href="http://www.htmlcommentbox.com">HTML Comment Box</a> is loading comments...</div>
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" id="hcb"> /*<!--*/ (function(){s=document.createElement("script");s.setAttribute("type","text/javascript");s.setAttribute("src", "http://www.htmlcommentbox.com/jread?page="+escape(""+window.location).replace("+","%2B")+"&opts=406&num=10");if (typeof s!="undefined") document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(s);})(); /*-->*/ </script>
<!-- end htmlcommentbox.com -->

Step 7:
After you copy and paste the code from the link above, you may chose to change the "Display" found on the bottom of that same "Set Up Your Gadget" box. Click "OK" when you are done.

Step 8:
Your new gadget will appear on your page. You may want to edit it by right clicking on the gadget to change it's position on the page, it's properties, or to remove it. Some of the "Properties" that I find useful to change are under "Display". You may chose to include a scrollbar on the gadget when necessary. You may change the title of the gadget from "Code Wrapper" to whatever you like. You may also change the height and width of the gadget.

Step 9:
Enjoy!

I created an announcements page - and several posts and want visitors to be able to comment on the posts (like a blog) - In reading through this help area it sounds very complicated.  I went to More actions and Page Settings - a screen pops up that allows me to check boxes to allow attachments and comments - seemed easy enough - but ti doesn't work when I go in as a visitor - any help??
Thanks

@CSN Culinary Club
You have great information.  The only problem I've had so far is not being able to be a moderator for the comment box.  As soon as I put that code in there, it seems to not work.
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? 2WheelPig 11/17/10 8:12 AM
@bwn
Those are for only others that you have allowed in your Google Site as "collaborators" so they can post comments and attachments.

Anyone lose comments when using html comment box?  When I have comments on one of my G Site pages then edit the page later, the comments are lost.  It's driving me crazy!
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Mitra2011 2/9/11 8:23 AM
I had the same problem. I lose all the comments in my page when I edit it. The comment box works fine till then. Is there a way to keep the comments even if we do edit the page?
Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? 109481jt0dm0 5/7/11 8:19 AM
Step 1: Go to the page/subpage you want your Chat Room to be.

Step 2: Go to "Edit page".

Step 3: Go to "insert" and than "more gadgets".

Step 4: In the search box type in "Chat"

Step 5: Click "Comment Box". (It will have a picture of an iPhone)

Step 6: After ajusting the settings click "OK" at the bottom.

Step 7: Press "save" at top right of page.

Step 8: Enjoy!

the google friend connect also seems to work very well. Especially in our case where all our employees will be given @example.com usernames that will allow them to sign in to the google friend connect service. This user interface is much prettier than steegle's, although his method of the forms+spreadsheet is very good.

(The particular thing I do not like about htmlcommentbox dot com above is where the comments are stored, and how that might be compromised and would result in our site being compromised.)

I found the post here...
                     http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/sites/thread?tid=585c5ec8c9010383&hl=en

Steegle has instructions on how to do this here...

I agree with smrozas. It is ridiculous that in order to leave a simple comment, one must also be granted permission to edit the entire frigging site. Please fix this, Google.

I have used this steps above successfully until today.  I went to search for CODE WRAPPER and it is no longer there.  Any suggestions?

since the code wrapper gadget is gone, here's what I'm doing now:

1. go to disqus.com, and sign up for an account
2. copy your account "shortname"
3. in your google site, insert a gadget
4. search for disqus
5. insert the one named "Disqus comments"
6. in the Disqus Shortname box, paste the shortname you copied earlier
7. adjust the rest of the gadget as desired
8. click OK, save your page, and enjoy!

I just added it to a new site I built yesterday . http://www.codcloud.com
You can change rooms by typing in a different channel. Seems to be working.

Feedback?   Not pretty I know but hopefully functional. Can any one test it please?

Thanks, Mike

Disqus is a great tool to engage visitors and create community. It's commenting platform that can be easily integrated with most platforms. You can find more information on setting up Disqus, with our Quickstart Guide, found here: http://docs.disqus.com/help/4/

Also, keep in mind our support team is here to answer any questions you may have, and can be contacted here: http://disqus.com/support

Phil, this is phenomenal.  Thank you so much for Pnyxe . . . I tried it and it works.  And my frustrations that it's not built-in to Google Sites are becoming less strident now that I know there's a workable option.

I can see the comments on your home page, but the URL does not point to instructions, only points to the result. You probably have another page that gives instructions on how you did it. I could not navigate to it without knowing your language. Can you give a more direct URL to the instructions? Thanks.

Here's an answer, finally: ShoutMix

Check it out here. https://sites.google.com/a/realcatholiconline.org/the-opus-dei-guidebook/  Feel free to test it, my site's not really open yet and I can delete posts  later if I need to.

I put the embed code in the html for the section of the page I wanted it to appear in.  Can't use the html gadget or put it in the sidebar, though. You do have to pay for it, but it's cheap, and you can customize it.  I do not have anything to do with them, I just was so happy to have an answer that worked.

Re: How may one add a comment box for visitors, NOT owners or collaborators? Tony Fecteau 12/5/13 8:48 AM
After searching around for awhile and not finding anything usable, I decided to "hack" together My Own Solution using google app scripts.  Although I admit it isn't amazing, its better than any other solution I've seen and it doesn't use an external source.  (sorry about previous post, I made the script public)
 1) On your sites page click More -> Manage Site
 2) On the App Scripts tab click Add New Script
 3) Click "Blank Project"
 4) Go to My App Script and copy all the code at the bottom
 5) Paste the code into your project and save
 6) Click "Run" -> "doGet", then follow the steps to authorize
 7) Click Publish -> Deploy As Web App -> Enter a Version and click Deploy
 8) Now go back to edit your sites page
 9) Click Insert -> Apps Script -> select your comments script

You will have to create a copy of the app script for each page that you want a comments section for.  If you edit the script to make it better please let me know!!!
