How to change site template? mediageek413 11/17/09 8:33 AM
With google's new public site templates gallery how can I change my site to use one of the new ones? When I go into manage templates I can only change from webpage to list, etc. I want to change my whole site to use the new one. Is this possible? Thanks.

Since a site template includes a complete site structure (pages and sample content) as well as a theme, I don't see any way to apply a site template to an existing site without deleting the content already in the current site.

Is your concern that you'll lose the URL and inbound links? Do you have your own domain attached to the site in question? If so, you might be able to create a new site with your desired template, transfer the content (cut and paste) from one to the other and then move the domain from the old site to the new one.

If you are looking to just get the theme (design) from one of the new site templates, you could create a new site with it and use that as your guide to changing the site appearance of your current site.

I know both of these are time consuming  processes but I don't know of any way around it. Best of luck with your project, perhaps they will come up with a way to do this in the future but as far as we've been able to determine, you can't apply a site template to an existing site.

I have only just set up my new template and would like to change it to a template from the gallery "professional" -  there is no data to loose. I tried to delete the page - but the site wouldn't allow me... I thought if I could just start afresh, this would save a lot of time. Is this possible? Thanks.
Re: How to change site template? OverTheTop 12/3/09 5:08 PM
The site templates are site wide. It is my understanding that you can only apply the site templates at the time the site is created. You would probably need to either start over with a new site or delete the whole site and then start again. If the latter, you'll probably have to wait an undetermined amount of time (hours or days?) while Google deletes the old site and frees up the site name/URL for you.

Hope that helps!

You can change your site template.

Go to Google Sites, sign in so you can see 'My Sites'. Choose the site you want to change, then far right, the button marked 'More Actions' then 'Manage Site'.

On the left is a list, choose 'Themes' under 'Site Appearance'

Hope that helps.

@LyndaReddington,

Ah, but that isn't changing the site template, it is change the theme of the site.

The theme is the graphical skin applied to the site while the site template is comprised of a theme as well as a site structure including pre-populated pages of sample content.

more actions and change page template

I don't need to change a *PAGE*... I need to change the entire *SITE* template.

Just like when I first started:  Pick a template.

I just randomly picked one.   (Not even google would be foolish enough to say "oh, you can never change your site template".)

I'm in somewhat the same boat as Sally Girl and others, more or less.  When I created a site for a bible study group, and found a template for bible study groups and figured, cool, I'll try this.  Now that I've got the site mostly set up, I'm realizing that the "cool" background image is actaully kind of limiting, so I'd like to just turn that off.  But there's no lower level control over something as simple as the background image.  Quite annoying.

@ScottK7

Did you get your problem resolved? Perhaps I can help with some pointers (as it sounds like the site template you started with was one of ours). Can you provide me with the URL to your site and what you want to change so I can sit with my designer and come up with a solution for you?

I do beleive that you can change the site layout per LyndaReddington's instructions.....I added a couple of steps at the end of her original post in bold....

You can change your site template.

Go to Google Sites, sign in so you can see 'My Sites'. Choose the site you want to change, then far right, the button marked 'More Actions' then 'Manage Site'.

On the left is a list, choose 'Themes' under 'Site Appearance'

Under 'Site Appearance' choose 'Themes', then in the upper right hand corner select 'Browse the public theme gallery'

hope this works for you!

This is actually a fairly recent addition, isn't it? As recently as two months ago I was talking with a Google developer that said this was going to be how they were going to address this. Wonder if it was "slipstreamed" into the product?

Have you tried it? I just now tried it and it appears to work FAIRLY well. It doesn't replace any site content so any elements of the page that are included in the content area won't change but you also won't get some of the stock items in a new template.

Something for template designers to keep in mind. Thanks for pointing this out @zwik44.

Hi to all,
I tested this method and for me it didn't work the way it's supposed to. The images  (background, wrapper, header) were not copied and without them the template does not look like the preview. If I want them I have to insert them by hand.
First I create a new site with the template that I want. Then I go to the attachments and download all the images. And then I go back to the site where I want my change my template and make the changes in Colours and Fonts.
Not an easy but solid way.

I'd like to change the template to be blank - there's no option to do this in the way zwick44 described. Do you have any idea? I'd be grateful for that.

Re: How to change site template? sandboxes 8/25/10 10:07 PM
I was able to do this.  I had to create a new site with the template I wanted.  I then deleted the original site and copied the new one to the same name as the one I had deleted (the original owner can re-use the name).
Re: How to change site template? BayouChica 9/8/10 6:52 PM
How did you delete the original site? I didn't see a function for that. I do want to re-use the same name, but have a different template.
Re: How to change site template? garyburns1 10/5/10 2:31 PM
Guys,

I changed the theme, in the site header it didnt pick up the previous theme text, so I have the sample name left and I cant edit it. grrr

I am always wary of so called "simple site builders" as they by nature are very limiting. But I think I may give up and just do it the "old fashioned way"

Re: How to change site template? Francois A Greeff 11/25/10 6:02 AM
To change SITE TEMPLATE, not PAGE template:

(To TEST the procedure, create a new site called “YourNameAndSurnameBackwards” – “sdrawkcaBemanruSdnAemaNruoY”. No one else will have that name and you will not want to use it ever again. Use the WRONG template when creating this TEST site. Then follow the procedure below to convince yourself that it works. Ultimately, delete the wrong site, and repeat the process with your real site.)

Go over your whole web site, page by page and copy and paste ALL CONTENT FROM EVERY SINGLE PAGE AND SUB-PAGE into a word document. Save that on your computer.

1.        Go to Google sites
2.        Log in
3.        Click my Account
4.        Click Sites
5.        Click on name of site
6.        More Actions
7.        Manage Site
8.        General
9.        (scroll down page) Delete this site
10.        Delete
11.        Create new site
12.        Browse the gallery for more (under choose a template)
13.        Government and non-profits (my example)
14.        News Letter (my example)
15.        Select
16.        (Type in the name of site that you deleted)
17.        (Please type in the code shown)
18.        Create site

Now you have a BLANK web site, with the new SITE TEMPLATE.

Build  new website content, using as guide the content you copied and pasted into a word document. If possible, copy and paste it into the new template site.
1.        Edit page
2.        etc.

I found Francois A Greeff gave a very useful advice. Actually I finally changed my template base on this advice. Template is different from theme.
Re: How to change site template? lbcushman 1/13/11 5:21 AM
When I go to "Manage Site", there is no "Site Appearance" option in the menu at the far left of the page.  The only option is "Site Content".  What am I doing wrong?
Re: How to change site template? STLRookie 5/22/11 8:52 AM
Let's use a house analogy.

TEMPLATES create structure.  Think floor plan.  The floor plan governs number of bedrooms, detached garage, room size etc.  Templates govern where things are located, number of gadgets, where navigation is placed etc.  At a google site you cannot just SWITCH the template ( structure) because your content may not fit.   If your housing needs change and you need 5 bedrooms not 3, you just can't add that.  The proportion of your furniture may not work etc.

*** If you want to stay in the SAME LOCATION, you will have to do a complete tear down and rebuild.  (hold this for a minute)

THEMES govern appearance.     Think paint.  If you like the basic structure of the house you can change paint or install wallpaper.  Change carpet to tile.  But you can't quickly add on 2 more bedrooms or an extra bath.

I hope that helps with the difference between templates and themes.

************************************************************************
Again you can't just SWITCH templates.  That would be swapping 5 bedrooms for 3.   How would your old data be placed in the new template?  You may have data (furniture for a sunroom) that doesn't fit the new template (new house has no sunroom).

***  But you CAN get a new template by deleting your site,  creating a new site and you DON'T have to lose your site name!!  Keep reading.  *****

If you are willing to copy and save your data in Word (put your furniture in storage), you can delete the old site (tear down the old house) and create a new site with a new template  (build a new house with new floor plan) and copy and paste the relevant data into the spaces (move the needed furniture into the new house).

********************************************************

Francois Greef has the right steps above but is missing a crucial step.

THE MISSING STEPS TO GETTING A SITE WITH A NEW TEMPLATE AND KEEPING YOUR SITE NAME---

10.  Delete
10A.  Revisit your now deleted site name.   https://sites.google.com/site/ insert deleted site name here
-- You see when you delete a site within 30 days you can reclaim it.
10B.  The choices will say Reclaim site or   Delete permanently.  Choose Delete Permanently.
--- Doing this will allow you to REUSE your site name.

Now continue with the remainder of the steps
11.        Click > Create new site
12.        Browse the gallery for the new template (structure) you want to use.
13.        Select the template
14.        Type in the name of site that you deleted
15.        (Please type in the code shown)
16.        Create site

Take care --

Re: How to change site template? NederLANA 6/29/12 3:08 AM
Maybe my wording may help someone:
YOU CAN CHANGE THE TEMPLATE, not just a single page!
1) Go to "Manage Site"
2) Then select "Colors and Fonts" in the lower left navigation bar
3) With this, you can then DELETE the "Existing Themes and Customization". Doing this essentially eliminates the formatting and takes it down to a basic google template,.
4) Then you can choose a new "Base theme", and adjust the colors/backgrounds/fonts, even the blank/white standard.
5) OR OR OR you can "Choose new theme" in the upper right hand corner. This allows you to search and select yet another "template"
6) And if you want to delete some pages, you can go to "edit" that page and then select "delete page" from the scroll down menu.

Good luck!
