|Can I use Google Storage to backup my photos?||Joesmosax||1/4/10 7:24 PM|
I just bought 80 gigs of space to backup my 40+ gigs of photos. There doesn't seem to be a good way to use this space as a true backup drive. I figured you could use the picasa backup feature, but no....
Is there any other way?
This offer I feel was quite misleading, if there is no way to backup, I'd like to look into getting a refund.(probably impossible)

Not a true backup...agreed, but anything is better than nothing where having a backup of your photo files is concerned
But I'm not sure what you are after as a back up...the 1000 limit prevents albums/folders being uploaded to just on web album...as for file types different to jpeg you need to use the upload button in your PWA ...not picasa 3.6 ...you can't backup raw files in your PWA ...
Sadly there is no refunds for extra storage :(

What is a PWA?
Also, I've seen a firefox extension that turns your extra gmail space into storage that you can upload with an FTP like interface. Can I use this perhaps as a means to backup? or will I be capped at the gmail limit of 7 gigs?
Anyone else on here mislead by this storage offer? Incredibly disappointing....how would anyone use all that space(up to 200 gigs and more!).

I wouldn't say that I was mislead by the offer, but yes, it is a shame that you can't backup your pictures without limitations (the automatic RAW to JPEG conversion is a show-stopper for me that I only discovered after purchasing 200GB of storage). But perhaps the rumored "Google Drive" or "Gdrive" will take off and allow you to use the Google storage for real backup soon? Anyone know?

VERY misleading. The POOREST Google product ever! I can't even cancel and get a refund.

I tried to explain the situation to a friend, and it was quite hard to get across that, yes actually you CAN'T use it as a backup. It is incredible how limited the functionality of it is.
The fact they advertise absurdly large amounts of storages contributes to this misunderstanding I think. The offer 1TB of space, how in the world could you fill that with the limitations in place? That is over half a million photos.
I would like to complain and suspect others on this forum would as well. Where is the best place to go?

Does anyone have direct contacts to Google employees that work in Picasa? I agree... this is one of the worst experiences I've had with a purchase. I have already contacted Google Checkout multiple times requesting a refund since that's where I paid money for the extra storage. Still no response.

Agree! Misleading product and name!
I was thrilled to find that Google finally had a "Storage space" online and took for granted i could use it for backup in picasa.
Really Google, this is a poor product until it gets an other interface. I really hope some kind of Google Drive is on it's way so i can use the 80GB wasted google storage i bought.

I think there's really no misleading here. Everyone of us had the possibility to experiment with the 1Gb free storage. I tested backupping with JPG's which you CAN, and I assumed RAW's could be uploaded as well, as they showed up in Picasa. This last was not true, and I should have tried it before spending 30 bucks more for the 200Gb storage...
However, I have backupped ALL of my JPG's to Webalbums (original size). I don't see why you guys say this is not possible? For me it's a 1 on 1 backup.
Luckily a few days ago google announced their documents storage plan, and that enables RAW backupping (eg data backup). So it's not all lost.

Thanks for the post. Backing up full size jpgs(40 gigs in total) as web albums would be a pain in the butt...probably would take days...not an option in my opinion.
I hadn't heard about the document storage plan, can you post a link?

I have roughly 50 GBs, and am almost finished with backing everything up. Even though I have a 20Mb upload, takes a long while because sometimes the server errors. But hey, atleast now my house can burn down with my pics/memories save!
The announcement was made on http://googledocs.blogspot.com/
Saying: "This makes it easy to backup more of your key files online, from large graphics and raw photos to unedited home videos taken on your smartphone"
Isn't that just convenient. Seems we'll have to wait a little while. Maybe february.

In case you are not aware, there are limits that apply in Google Docs on the number of files you can store according to the documentation below..
I'm just pointing this out so we don't run into the same misunderstanding we saw here with Picasa storage and album limits.
It is possible that the documentation could be out-of-date today Feb 3 but very unlikely. If in doubt please seek clarification over at the Google Docs forum.

Google Paid Storage is ridiculous. I paid for 200G of storage so that I could back up my photos but it is so difficult to do so. You have to back up as an album in Picasa and there is only one level of albums.
Why can't I just choose my photo directory and back that up to the storage space that I paid for?!
C'mon Google. This is lame, lame, lame.

Hopefully you have less than 1000 albums, even at 1 directory level.
