Some photo's do not show up in Picasa, while others in the same folder ARE shown. What can I do about this?
What did I do sofar?
- Performed all checks in this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/PicasaGuide/browse_thread/thread/ff5bf59eb9640ecb/c1605049a4e5e124?lnk=gst&q&pli=1
- These are JPG-files with same extension with dimensions: 3888x2592
- Files are not hidden
- Files are not corrupt, other viewers do show them (also Picasa Photo Viewer)
- Directory is actively indexed by Picasa (put to 'Scan Always')
- Tried deleting all Picasa info, removing the folder from Picasa and then added it again. In vain...
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Robert Brown||1/30/09 2:30 AM|
Try opening one of your problem photos with ms-paint and do a "save as". See what happens.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||mbrouns||1/30/09 10:32 AM|
Thanks sofar Robert,...
Saved on of the original problem pictures as "IMG_8881a.JPG" (added the "a"). And now it does show up?!
Would this mean I have to open and save all files with another name (loosing all tags, create dates, camera infos, etc)?
Hope this only hinted you what the problem might be... There must be a better (and easier) way, right?
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Robert Brown||1/30/09 10:41 AM|
Unfortunately, I don't have any idea why Picasa didn't like your jpeg. I have seen at least on other user with the same other problem.
Check out IrfanView (it's free). It will allow you to do a batch conversion and save all your metadata. You shouldn't have to do this, but it might be easier to regenerate your jpegs rather than trouble shoot why Picasa doesn't like you jpegs.
Maybe someone else will chime in.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Anthony||1/30/09 10:48 AM|
What happens when you drag and drop one of the images into Picasa? Does it display?
You could try removing the folder using Folder Manager and adding it again.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Don Lind||1/30/09 1:01 PM|
Some of the usual suspects:
Picasa doesn't support CMYK color - only RGB.
Picasa doesn't support 8-bit (B&W) PSDs.
Actually, color depth is a somewhat common issue - stick to "normal" 24-bit color images in general.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||mbrouns||2/2/09 11:35 AM|
@Don... thanks but that's not it. All pics were taken with the same camera (Canon Eos 450D). Some pics show, others not.
Will try and copy the folder, delete the original and than put it back with a slightly different folder name.
@ Robbert... If that doesnot help I guess I'll have to use your suggestion IfranView (thanks for that).
Will let you know if I find out more...
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||markmp||2/13/09 9:28 AM|
I'm having the same issue. I just imported about 1700 photos. Only 300 or so actually show up in picasa. I checked the folder on the harddrive and all the photos are there. I tried refreshing thumbnails and that didn't work. All the photos were taken with the same Canon SD790IS. The only difference is that some are "fine" and others are "superfine" jpeg quality.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||wic||3/2/09 11:46 PM|
I've got the same problem. Only some of my photo's are shown in Picasa.
I've checked everything in the following post, but non of these are causing the problem: http://groups.google.com/group/PicasaGuide/browse_thread/thread/ff5bf59eb9640ecb/c1605049a4e5e124?lnk=gst&q&pli=1
Refreshing tumbnails also doesn't work for me :-(
My files are not secured.
I can open the photo's in Picasa viewer. But when I rightclick them and choose "Edit in Picasa", then they are not opened in Picasa editor.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||wic||3/2/09 11:52 PM|
I found a solution that worked for me:
I removed all the folders from Picasa and then added them again. So:
Tools --> Folder manager
Click on (the root folder of) the folder of which Picasa doesn't show all the pictures, click on "remove from Picasa", click on ok.
Then Tools --> Folder manager: and the removed folder again with "scan always".
That worked for me. I hope it works for you as well.
....but I don't hope we'll have to do this often, cause this takes a lot of time (i've got many pictures). I want my photo manager to save me time, not to waste my time because I have to solve problems.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||wic||3/3/09 7:28 AM|
Do *NOT* do what I described in my previous post!!!! You will lose all your albums! Everything is gone :-(
Hours and hours work of selecting my best pictures for multiple albums are deleted by removing my root folder from Picassa and adding it again :-(.
If somebody has a solution how I can get my albums back, please let me know!
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||wic||3/3/09 7:31 AM|
Why does Picasa delete your albums when you remove a folder from being watched?!?!?!? |-((
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Anthony||3/3/09 2:34 PM|
Your albums should persist now when the number of images reaches zero.
In earlier versions of Picasa your Albums would go away if they contained no images.
Make sure you have the latest version of Picasa: go to http://picasa.google.com and download it.
What may have happened to you is you lost your PAL files.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||mbrouns||3/3/09 11:41 PM|
@ Wic - this perfectly describes/complements my original question in this post...
Kind of "solved" it by renaming all photo's in the folder. But when I revert back to the original name, the file is hidden again??
Renaming the photo's also means that all unsaved Picasa edits (stored in the Picasa.ini file) will be lost as the reference to the filename is broken.
to rename all files you can search for "batch file rename" resulting in tools like this: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/File_Cleanup_Utilities/Batch_File_Renamer_Screenshot.html
But,... I'd rather have a real fix from the Picasa guys?!!
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Anthony||3/4/09 10:13 AM|
mbrouns - do you have the problem described by Brian?
"When I go into the properties of one of the photos that doesn't show up in Picasa 3 (right-click properties on the photo file), I see this message at the bottom: "Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer."
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||daveseltz||3/13/09 6:27 AM|
I've run into the same issue. Some photos in the folder I'm using don't show up. I've made sure:
- Not hidden
- Note read only
- No security protection
- Re-installing Picasso
When I make a copy of the image that Picasso won't show Picasso pops up a little dialogue showing that it has added the new image but I can't see it in the folder still. I've tried to copy the whole folder but the same images that don't show up in the old folder don't show up in the new folder.
I really want to use Picasso because I want to print out 1"by 1" photos together on a single picture and Picasso's collage feature help me do that.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Anthony||3/13/09 9:29 AM|
Sounds like it might be a very small image. Try View > Small Pictures in the top menu (next to File and Edit).
The product is Picasa not Picasso. If you are downloading something called Picasso please go to http://picasa.google.com and download the product from Google.
If you are just mistakenly calling it Picasso... no problem! You are not the first :)

|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||theflossyfitzy||5/23/09 7:27 AM|
Thanks Anthony, I had a folder with 12 jpgs (that I created with PrintPro), only 9 were showing up in my folder in Picasa. I could view all 12 jpgs in Picasa, but they would not appear in my folder with the rest of them. I could even click on the folder icon in Picasa and all 12 would popup in my computer's folder. As you suggested, (Try View > Small Pictures in the top menu), and now all are showing up. Thanks so much! I was trying everything I could thing of (drag and drop, ect). I was hoping I didn't have to rename all files (as read earlier in the post).
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Lubi||5/27/09 5:29 AM|
I had the same problem. Only some of my photo's were shown in Picasa.
Before I didn´t have the problem, all the photo´s were shown.
But now my problem is solved.
Photos have problem in Mozilla only, in Internet Explorer are shown correctly.
Now, when I need to see all my photos I use Explorer not Mozilla.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||nrmancuso||6/27/09 10:25 AM|
This is apparently not the real problem. I have IE current version and I still have at least one folder that does not display all the jpg's contained. I find no message in properties as previously described. I cannot rename the images because I use them all in another application and they all contain unique text which won't be carried through the name change. The strange thing is that Picasa formerly treated this folder correctly. I have always had V3, so it is a real bear of a problem.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||nrmancuso||6/27/09 10:40 AM|
I have just solved the problem (I hope) by changing the status of small pictures which I read in another post. It immediately solved the problem at least temporarily. Go to the View menu in Picasa and click on Small pictures. It happens fast. Thanks to one of the top contributors (I think it was Anthony, but not sure). Good bye for now.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||vikramu||7/4/09 10:00 PM|
I was seeing a similar behaviour with a single file not showing up in a folder when I could see it previously. had hidden that image by mistake. Refreshing the folder etc didnt help. Finally got it to show up again with these steps.
1. Go To View, select Hidden Pictures
2. You should now see the picture greyed out in your album/folder
3. right click and select unhide.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||ajayT||8/1/09 12:42 PM|
I too am having the same problem.
I've got all my picasa files synced up between two different computers -- everything should be the exact same.
Somehow, all the pictures show up on one computer, but not on the other.
Both computers' picasa have the _exact_ same version # too, so no i'm not interested in theories about bugs.
I updated the file stamps of all the files in this particular folder, and after that 6 more pictures showed up, but still 8 are not appearing.
The files are exactly the same -- permissions, datestamp, etc.
The picasa is exactly the same.
It's only 2 folders that aren't finding all of their photos.
'Small pictures' doesn't help.
I'm looking now and it seems to be all pictures that i put into albums, those are the ones that are missing on this computer. (And of course the albums are empty too!) Hmm/interesting..
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||snafu169||8/31/09 7:46 PM|
Anthony above hit the nail on the head, and he also has the most votes for the correct answer. I use Fotosizer to automatically reduce the file size of my images for posting to the web, I guess it doesn't work well with Picasa sometimes...oddly I had reduced 3 files at the same time, but only 2 showed up.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||SirVive||9/7/09 10:44 PM|
I had the same problem as many of you here. I had a number of folders where picasa only found 1/3 -1/2 of the pics with apparently no reason. All the pics were taken with the same camera, were the same quality JPEG or TIFF depending on the folder, were the same pixel dimensions, were not hidden/read only.... and the list goes on. Everything was as it should be. I decided to try Anthony's suggestion to View / Small Pictures anyway even though I thought it wouldn't work (all the pics were the same size and dim.!!!!!) but it did the trick. Why I can't say, in theory it shouldn't have, argggg !!!! Oh well it works now. I did have to close Picasa and reopen it to start the search process and now my folders show 182 instead of 76, 321 instead of 113 etc. Three cheers for Anthony !
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Anthony||9/8/09 11:07 AM|
Thanks :) Glad to have helped.
It is curious that it worked though given your observations... unless all of your images are close to being too small. What are the dimensions of these images? Where they taken from a camera phone or a camera?
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||SirVive||9/8/09 5:42 PM|
These are very large files, average around 17 MB each. Most were taken as 3008 x 2000 JPEG's and I had used Photoshop batch converter to convert them to 3008 x 2000 TIFF's for editing which I hadn't gotten done yet. The 'Archive' box was checked on most but it was the same for those that showed too. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. The only other thing I can thing of that may have caused it is if it 'timed out' for some strange reason but it happened to the same folders multiple times and then worked just fine after I checked the 'Show Small' and the 'Show Hidden' buttons.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Ender1081||12/15/09 2:45 AM|
Somebody may have already suggested this, but I found that picasa wouldn't accept any images that were either checked as "read only" in windows, or that were in a folder marked as "read only". Haven't tested all folders I have yet, but the first one that I removed the read only from, the pictures from that folder were then accepted by picasa.

|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||shinyparticle||3/12/10 3:03 PM|
Are there any solutions for images that are "too big" - I've done all of the tricks (adding/removing folders, rescanning, copying to new folders, reinstalling Picasa, etc.etc.etc.etc.) And the only way that I can get some of my images to show up in the albums is by making them smaller. I have quite a bit of memory on my system (2GB - should be plenty for a 10 MB image, no?) and can't find any solution! (just a side note that may help someone solve this - I have picasa image viewer as my default image viewer and when I double click on a photo that it doesn't put in my picasa albums, "edit in Picasa" is greyed out - but not for the pictures that do show up). Is there a way of increasing the file size that is allowed in Picasa?! Help!!
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||shinyparticle||3/12/10 3:04 PM|
Oh, and, I have "show small images" and "show hidden images" checked under "view".

|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||itzikamz||3/21/10 4:18 AM|
I have the same problem as many here described. The wiered thing is that it started just lately..i.e. folders/pics that were showing fine earlier are not now.
The only think that I can think of is the fact I have upgraded to Windows 7, and also to MS Explorer 8.0
Same for others?
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||chofack||3/21/10 9:17 AM|
This happened to me. The pictures suddenly appear when I manually create a "Date taken" value. Am digging into how I imported all my photos in the first place.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||Texas Never Whispers||4/9/10 2:57 AM|
I had the same problem. But I had filtered Picasa to only show photos with faces. Click on it again or click on "Back to show all" (or something similar, I use swedish version).
I had clicked on it when I sorted faces and didn´t think it filtered everything in the folders view.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||lOleg||4/17/10 6:43 AM|
Had the same problem, fixed by moving the missing files to a separate folder, making sure they were not "Read Only" in Windows, restarting Picasa and moving them back again.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||ShivaShenoy||5/21/10 7:08 PM|
I had the same problems...and realized that some filetypes were unchecked in the Tools\Options\FileTypes tab....hence GIF, PNG, etc were not showing up! Wonder why that is the default.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||HeraldO||7/26/10 8:40 PM|
Ran into the same problem. I could browse all the folders where my pictures were stored, but Picasa would not display any of the pictures. The pictures all appeared "grey" if I browsed to them in Windows Explorer. Could open them OK in other applications. If I tried to import a photo with Picasa (all JPEGs, large file size) I got an error something along the lines of "can not import some files". Indicates a permissions problem or the files are hidden. Checked the folders and no check beside "hidden". So I went to the main "my pictures" folder, right clicked, selected properties and then checked "hidden". Applied to all folders and and subfolders. Once it was done, I removed the checkmark beside "hidden" and applied again to all folders and subfolders. Voila. Picasa automatically detected the pictures again, but sadly I had to retag everything. Was using Picasa 3.6 on Windows 7. I blame my sweetie who was messing around on my computer before the problem occured. Bless her curious soul as she slept while I slaved on fixing this.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||srobertson398||8/19/10 8:01 AM|
I check the properties of the photo I had that wouldn't upload and discovered it was in Png not Jpeg so I copied it in Jpeg format and it uploaded fine.
|Re: Some pictures do not show up in Picasa||reallush||11/10/10 7:18 PM|
Another thing you can do is to put the "always scan" function on for that specific folder ( FILE>add folder to picasa, then select your folder and press the always scan function.)
SECOND it might be that you have some PNG images or any other format that you didn't select in picasa's options, go to (TOOLS>options, File type TAB then select all)
if this won't help try what other people said.. but this is what I found..
