Folders & pictures disappear from Picasa soon after opening. BDDA 3/30/10 4:10 PM
I am using Windows 7 and this is a new issue.  When I start Picasa it adds in all the folders & pictures as it scans the computer.  At the end of the scan all the folders & photos which are located in the "Pictures" Library disappear.  Folders & photos not in the library remain.

I have the same problem

I also want to add that I have unistalled & re-installed Picasa.  I have even tried to install Picasa 2 but it still does the same thing.  I have other computers running XP & this is not an issue.  It is only an issue on on my Windows 7 computer.  I believe the new Windows 7 "Libraries" way of handling documents & media has more than something to do with this.

Something may have corrupted your Picasa database. To regenerate it: uninstall Picasa, click YES to remove the database, reboot your computer, and re-install Picasa. You won't loose any photos or edits.  For more details, see http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=11502

Also make sure your Windows Media Player and Quicktime software are up to date.
Quicktime is at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download
Windows Media Player is at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx

Thanks Tom, but I've already done that.  It regenerates the database then when it's done the folders disappear again.

Check Tools > Folder Manager and make sure that that Picture folder is marked "Scan Always".  Try the other things in the Missing photos troubleshooter, below.

Hi Tom:  Tried all that and all folders are marked scan always.  On opening of Picasa the folders are scanned, added back in & then when the scan is finished...they disappear.  Even if you start viewing any of the "newly" added pictures, they will disappear when the scan finishes a couple of minutes later.

I've tried something that seems to work.  Under Tools - Folder Manager, I change "My Pictures" from "Scan Always" to "Remove from Picasa".  I then select specific sub-folders of "My Pictures" and mark the as "Scan Always".  These sub-folders are then added into the database and they seem to stick.  You need to leave the main folder "My Pictures" marked as "Remove from Picasa" or it doesn't work.

"You need to leave the main folder "My Pictures" marked as "Remove from Picasa" or it doesn't work"

That's very interesting.  What is the root of the "My Pictures" folder; in other works, what's in "My Pictures" but not in a folder inside "My Pictures"?  If there are any files there, then they might be causing the problem; try moving them to another folder not scanned my Picasa.

Other than a handful of photos which I did not save in a sub-folder there was a hidden picasa.ini file.  I deleted this file now.  Upon checking the Folder Manager again I see that My Pictures is again listed as scan always.  Perhaps this old picasa.ini file was the culprit?  Anyway, the folders now seem to stick.
