|POP3 Email sync loop and battery drain issue - NOT fixed in 4.4.2||Luiz Felipe Palhano de Jesus||12/9/13 5:11 PM|
I have tried to raise this issue in the Exchange email sync issue thread, but it has been completely ignored. I have started a new discussion to see if Google acknowledges that exchange is not the only protocol that is causing excessive battery drain. I am currently running Android 4.4.2 on my Nexus 5 and it seems to have done nothing to fix the sync loop / battery drain bug for non-exchange accounts. Currently my Verizon FiOS POP3 account stays "syncing" until it completely kills the battery (around 5 hours regardless of actual device use). This happens on my Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and Nexus 7 gen 1. Before the 4.4.2 update some emails would be downloaded at the cost of excessive data use. As of 4.4.2 no emails are downloaded but the account is still constantly trying to "sync", it has been about an hour since i applied the update. On my nexus 7 (which I have left running plugged in for over a week) the account is still "syncing" with the battery setting reporting that email has caused 70% of total battery drain.
I would appreciate some type of recognition that a) exchange is not the only protocol causing email issues, and b) Google is currently trying to pinpoint and fix 4.4 email completely. I have offered multiple times to send bug reports, test new builds, etc. but have received no response. I have also sent multiple reports from within the battery setting from all of my devices.
setting for my Verizon account are as such:
incoming.verizon.net - 995 - ssl - user/pass
outgoing.verizon.net - 465 - ssl - user/pass
These are the same settings i have always used for my pop3 account and they always worked before 4.4.

Just installed it yesterday... But now the stock mail app says that all of my mails are unread...

martin, is that with exchange, or some other type of mail server?

Using imap with ssl... The server runs with dovecot and postfix...

Interesting, I have an IMAP account as well (also SSL) that hasn't had any issues. I'm not running my own private mail server or anything though. This is just further evidence that the 4.4 email experience was pushed out before it was completely ready. Am I right to assume that you had no issues with this account/setup in previous versions of the mail app?

So... back on 4.4 and mail app works fine :D
|Re: POP3 Email sync loop and battery drain issue - NOT fixed in 4.4.2||Luiz Felipe Palhano de Jesus||12/10/13 2:27 PM|
Even stranger. Honestly I've given up on Google fixing this anytime soon. I've basically setup two Microsoft emails and have my POP3 emails forwarded to those emails. Working so far... shouldn't have to do that but it is what it is.

Luiz for your POP3 issue, assuming you're using the Email app do you continue to experience the problem if you try visiting Settings > Apps > All > Email and pushing the Clear cache button? If that doesn't fix the issue, try visiting the same place and using the Clear data button. Note that clearing data will delete any settings and data you've associated with the app. Let me know how it goes; if it doesn't clear up the problem let me know and I can pass the feedback along.

Since upgrading to Kitkat on my Nexus 7 e-mail takes forever to show up... The problem has always been present on my Nexus 5 (IMAP mail) but now after upgrading to 4.4.2 the battery drain from the e-mail client makes the phone unusable.
Google can you help me downgrade my Nexus 5 to Jelly Bean to finally get back to decent e-mail on my phone?
|Re: POP3 Email sync loop and battery drain issue - NOT fixed in 4.4.2||Ankur V||12/17/13 2:04 PM|
I have a similar issue with my Exchange account after the update to 4.4.2. I noticed a 60% battery drain over 8 hours of the phone just left on a desk and the majority of it was the Exchange service. Going to the corporate account in settings showed that the contacts and calendar had synced fine, but the email was rapidly switching back and forth between "Syncing" and "Last synced ...".
Clearing the cache, clearing the data, and re-entering all my account details do nothing to fix the issue. It works fine for a few minutes and then the same thing starts happening. I rely on work email quite a lot and this is a major issue for me.

My sysadmin was able to fix the issue by disabling POP3 and IMAP options for my Exchange account.

I'm having the exact same POP3 issues with 4.4.2 upgrade on my Nexus 7: email continually attempts to sync, battery drains, and, even though I have my POP3 settings set to never delete messages from the server, my mail is disappearing. My POP3 settings are exactly the same settings that worked flawlessly prior to the 4.4 upgrades. I also have sent multiple bug reports to Google from within my email account. Hopefully they're working on 0 this issue. I'm so aggravated that I've disabled the email app on my tablet entirely and have gone back to

Same here using pop3 on my Nexus 5, email sync's and all is fine, but as soon as I open the Sent/Recycle folders on the email app, they both are constantly syncing or refreshing.

The same problem with my Nexus 5 in 4.4 and 4.4.2 with exchange account. We need a fix soon. This configuration works with 4.3 and with the new device we lost it.

The same problem here with both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) with POP3 email and 4.4.2. The setting to "Never" Delete email from server goes ahead and deletes email from server. Deleting emails from different POP3 servers does not remove them from my phone or tablet with the next sync or doing a refresh. Also, using the email widget doesn't update either when I read or delete an email. I have it set to only show unread emails for combined accounts. I read the email and it still shows in the widget. I delete the email from the server and tablet and the email continues to show in the widget. Even clearing the email cache does not remove them from the widget. The only way to get rid of them is to either reboot or to delete the widget and re-add it. So until it's fixed, the email widget is worthless so I removed it. Everything worked fine until 4.4 and these problems continue with 4.4.2. Also, another minor irritation is that when adding a POP3 account, it used to default to "Never" delete email from server. Now the default is to delete from server when I delete from Inbox. Of course right now it doesn't matter which one I select because they both will delete from server. However, it did make me wonder if this has something to do with the problem with emails being deleted from POP3 servers.

Same problem for me.

Same problem here with my Nexus 5 32GB-- email showing at 40% of battery drain, and phone is draining dry from a full charge in less than 8 hours of VERY LIGHT use. Great phone otherwise but this is a show-stopper. Is Google going to fix this or are we all going to have to take our business elsewhere?

Trash and sent folders in Shaw Webmail are continuously synching since recent upgrade. Have a Nexus 4 phone. Synch is set to "never". Any solution yet?

My battery drain problems on both Nexus 7 and Nexus 5 only started after getting the 4.4.2 update. I have two IMAP e-mail accounts set up on both these devices... I have had to disable e-mail on both if I want more than a few hours of battery life... If my corporate e-mail account was on Exchange I would use the new Outlook app as other co-workers say the problem is not present when using that app.Why
Why is it taking so long to address this problem?
So I had enough of not being able to check my e-mail so I set up an IMAP account again with manual sync.... the battery drain problem returned immediately at 58% battery use from e-mail app so it is now disabled for good.... I installed the K-9 mail app and I'm not looking back.... very good so far.

Issue just started for me yesterday, N5 running 4.4.2. Email is keeping phone awake for hours, looks like each time a new email comes into the server, the sync locks up and continually spins. If I toggle email sync off / on, the phone sleeps again.

I started to have the same issue on my Newus 5 since yesterday also i have the 4.4.2 version and the exchange services are draining the Battery (More than 70% during the night). The services are keeping synchrinizing and then stopping all the time around.
Do you have any news about this isuue Paul?

|Re: POP3 Email sync loop and battery drain issue - NOT fixed in 4.4.2||Marc Purdon||2/4/14 1:45 PM|
I've been using K-9 mail app for a month now and I'm not looking back, way more features than the stock e-mail client... no battery drain issues since switching. IMAP idle is great. If using Exchange I'd probably download the Outlook app.

Cheers Marc, I have tried K9 mail, and for some reason my emails still don't come through, have tried various other email clients, but none to my liking unfortunately.

Confirmed broken on Nexus 4 as well, POP with SSL and without, no exchange. Still spinning forever and eating the battery whole. How can syncing email be broken in 2014?

Just noticed this thread. My wife and I have 5's and both are trying to sync with a POP3 email account. One phone syncs effortlessly and the other has the problem outlined above. Would our data help in this pursuit? My wife is pulling her hair out right about now so you can guess who has the problem. Thanks Google, please fix.
