Re: Google Awards methode 6/9/09 10:11 PM
It's absolutely a scam. Just look at their email address. What's the chance a Google program will use a Microsoft powered email address? All the Googlers have a exa...@google.com email address.
Re: Google Awards methode 6/10/09 11:12 PM
Fake. As I said above ALL the emails from legitimate Google services and employees come from an address like example@google.com not googlemail.com or yahoo or live or whatever.
Only emails from a Google.com email address are legitimate.
Re: Google Awards drsam2010 6/10/09 11:21 PM

Re: Google Awards davidfree 6/11/09 1:45 AM
the sender email address can easily be faked.

Oldest spammer / phishing trick in the world...

Absolutely a SCAM!
Re: Google Awards methode 6/11/09 4:14 AM
My bad. The reply address should be a Google email address. As David said, the sender mail address can be faked with one short line of code.
Re: Google Awards Bradtilt 6/14/09 1:16 PM
Ok, but that one have a email from google, still a scam.
im dont belive because de email it from google.co.uk and from google.com.

(1) Your contact address.
(2) Your Tel/Fax numbers.
(3) Your Nationality/Country.
(4) Your Full Name/Sex.

(6) Ever won an online lottery?

The Google Promotion Award Team has discovered a huge number of double claims due to winners informing close friends relatives and third parties about their winning and also sharing their pin numbers. As a result of this, these friends try to claim the lottery on behalf of the real winners. The Google Promotion Award Team has reached a decision from headquarters that any double claim discovered by the Lottery Board will result to the canceling of that particular winning, making a loss for both the double claimer and the real winner, as it is taken that the real winner was the informer to the double claimer about the lottery. So you are hereby strongly advised once more to keep your winnings strictly confidential until you claim your prize.

Congratulations from the Staffs & Members of the Google interactive Lotteries Board Commission.

Sincerely,

The header was modified in a way to show award[at]google.com instead the true email address the message was sent from. Unfortunately this can be achieved quite easily in most of the programming languages.

Please always check the "reply-to" header as that reflects the most correctly the true sender.
Also note that the SPF record in the headers can reveal useful information as well.

Re: Google Awards endrikreimer 7/8/09 1:45 AM
Why doesn't Google do something about that kind of e-mails. I for example receive approximately 3 of such notifications to my junkmail from different senders every week but I have never received one under the name of Google. This can not be legal. It seems that the number of this kind of scams is growing all the time. Isn't there anybody doing anything about it? It is just funny to think that if I really would be such a lucky person to win that often only because of "having the most unique e-mail adress"(it consists of my name) I would earn about 2 million dollars a week just for owning an e-mail adress making me a very rich guy.
Re: Google Awards methode 7/8/09 2:12 AM
The legal department is constantly working to take down the servers sending these emails and their IPs are also blacklisted. The problem appears when it's sent from PCs which were taken over by malicious programs, as usually there are millions of such zombies (PCs which were taken over by malware).

There's not too much you can do about these scams but toi educate and increase the people's awareness.
Re: Google Awards rubycym 8/11/09 7:01 AM
I've been received the same emails from aw...@google.co.uk
Actually, the content was same with Bradtilt. Although there was address, ticket number, winning number, and I was not sure it's fake or true, so just google it. But I found out that the ticket number wasn't changed.
Re: Google Awards louisaskchan 8/12/09 11:23 PM

Re: Google Awards GKW1969 11/9/09 3:25 AM
People living in England should have noticed that there is also a discrepancy in the address of Google.
As far as I know Altrincham, Cheshire is near Manchester some 180 miles north of London. And yet London is mentioned in the address at the top.

Although I would love to win, in my case, 950.000 GBP this address doesn't add up to the facilities Google has: "Google Promotion Award Team." <d.l...@cable.net.co> is not what you expect from the biggest player on the internet.

As stated before.... it should be a google address.

What I am wondering is why do they need exactly this information. It hasn't any particularly questions about secret information or even about your email.

Re: Google Awards treesjan 1/20/10 12:31 AM
Dear Google friends,

We had the same stupid mail from this idiot. We thought as probably more people did, let's see if this is for real. The guy, in this case he calls himself sir Hans Andersen, gave us a special code , so that the courier could send the "parcel"with the "check"to the right adress. So we got in touch with the so called "courier" service. Guess what ? The emailadress doesn't exist. Thank god we didn't give our real homeadress, but some postoffice in the Netherlands plus we changed our name a little bit and the occupation. We did give him my celphonenumber. This mornig I got a call from this guy, who by the way has a north american accent, and in a very rude voice he gruffly asked for my husband and when I told him he was speaking to the wife, he quickly slammed the phone down.
Please Google, do something about this, because people might be given false hopes and who knows what kind of a hacker this is.

So people all over the world who use google, PLEASE IGNORE THESE KIND OF MAILS !!!!!

Hello Google friends,
We'd like to add a follow up to our story. This fake couriercompany mailed us again and required from us  a maximum of 750 pounds for having the "parcel"send to our home. WE threw this email away and have now blocked ( which we should have done immediately) this idiot from our email.

Shameful for Google to send sth like this to people x look official...so, x think it's from Google..What GOOGLE PROMOTION BOARD WUNNASAY ABOUT THIS?

Re: Google Awards Shamsala 5/6/10 6:43 PM
Hi,
I got the " OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION FROM GOOGLE AWARS" also here in Malaysia /Scandinavia - then again I keep getting messages weekly basis about winning lotteries all over the world even when I've had nothing to do with a lottery system or that particular country... ^^ I did not open the "letter" that was attached since I do not want to risk getting infected data in my computer.

The main thing is that I do not open any of these messages - specially attached stuff- that's the key thing. I do not get any sms's since I do not give my phone number to anything in the internet if I'm not really sure its needed or I do not know the party to who I'm giving it to. Nowadays I've heard that google-mail  (g-mail) doesn't allow you to create an account without the phone number unlike few years ago - maybe that's why you get the SMS's?. All that information I give is strictly limited and I always take notice where I give them to. so more you spread your information via internet, more you can be sure they will contact you. So the old rule - if you don't know the sender, if you suspect anything, do NOT open, do NOT response. If these people REALLY want to get in touch with you, they will do it other ways and will NOT ask your personal data via e-mails!

So my policy is - IF I'd win something, Id surely do NOT give any kind of personal or bank-related information via internet/e-mails since NO-ONE who is there with legally correct issue asks those via internet - since e-mails etc. can be easily encrypted by hackers. Maybe I'm far too skeptical with everything but it's better to be safe than sorry. I will believe these when a freaking courrier brings me that parcel/official letter with money without me been asked any money to get it.

Google, hotmail, yahoo etc. e-mail programs as far as I know have an information of their users out there, for anyone to use thru these date-things or communities. I keep getting mails from people asking me to "stop being in contact with these scammers" even if I don't have any idea what they are talking about (yes, I've read few of the letters b4 decided to just delete all w/o opening them) since I don't have anything to do with anyone I don't know. So yes, they use maybe our e-mail addresses as "references" of good /satisfied customers, they use the data we have to give in the internet for some reason. So be careful what you give out and where, don't be naive with things - if you win something, I bet they'll contact you different way and definitely will NOT ask money or personal information that doesn't really suit the purpose. That's my opinion!

Google can't really do much about this - I dont' know why they ask the phone number when creating new e-mail account, they probably have a good reason for it.
Re: Google Awards D15TORTION 6/16/10 2:48 AM
There's a good chance it's already been said, I frankly can't be bothered to reall through all responses. That having been said (and with the potential of repeating what somente else has said)..

Practically all e-mail headers can be spoofed. And it is a trivially easy thing to do, hence the vast number of phishing scams coming from newly developing countries and under-privileged countries. Consider sending out 1 million e-mails, by means of a single click of a mass mailer which automatically sends the e-mails to a list or pre-harvested e-mail addresses that have cost you peanuts to buy, and only getting a 0.001% response.. That is still a return of 10 people, and is each of those provide their bank details, that's a very high return for the scammer for a couple of minutes work..

When an e-mail travels from the US to the UK, for example, each node / mail server, etc. that it stops at along the way adds it's own information i.e. IP address / sever name to the top of the "Received:" header in the e-mail. This is the only thing that cannot be altered, and the *last* entry in the list will the the first node / mail server that dealt with the e-mail. Hence, by carrying out an IP Lookup, you can determine approximately the location that the e-mail originated from (among other information).

I've recently got the scam "Google Awards" e-mail (blank e-mail with a .docx file attached -- they can't even be bothered with the pleasant social engineering e-mail attempt now!) which claimed to come from "offi...@google.com." After viewing the e-mail Received header and doing an IP Lookup, the e-mail actually originated from Nigeria (north of Kachia, east of Antai, if anyone is familiar with Nigeria).

As for Google not doing anything about it, I'm sure they are, but really there's not a lot they can do that will dramatically reduce the problem. They could blacklist certain IP addresses, but the scammers will just use different IP addresses (either by being assigned them, or spoofing them, too). Practically all e-mail headers can be spoofed, so they can't really filter anything based upon these, either. And of course, if there was something they could do that put an end to the problem, I'm sure they have figured it out by now, after the number of years that phishing has been a problem for.. They best thing to do is for the user to keep their wits about them - do you really think Google would award you $2 million dollars, or your great aunt whom you never knew you had or have heard of (and speaks in broken english) would suddenly require your bank account details to store a large sum of cash? Just delete the e-mails.. After laughing hysterically at them, of course!

The Google Promotion Award Team has discovered a huge number of double claims
due to winners informing Close friends relatives and third parties about their
winning and also sharing their pin numbers. As a result of this, these friends
try to claim the lottery on behalf of the real winners. The Google Promotion
Award Team has reached a decision from headquarters that any double claim
discovered by the Lottery Board will result to the canceling of that particular

winning, making a loss for both the double claimer and the real winner, as it is
taken that the real winner was the informer to the double claimer about the
lottery. So you are hereby strongly advised once more to keep your winnings

strictly confidential until you claim your prize.

Congratulations from the Staffs & Members of the Google interactive Lotteries

Speaking of Google Awards, I think we should give a special award to Google, itself, for having magnificently succeeded in destroying their formerly excellent Google News site, while at the same time alienating thousands and thousands of once-loyal Google users, all in one fell swoop.

Congratulations, Google! You can pick up your award of £1,500,000.00 (ONE MILLION FIVE-HUNDRED THOUSAND GREAT BRITAIN POUNDS STERLING) by contacting Fred S. via E-mail: (fred.s.goo...@gmail.com).

As much as it annoys me to get one of these ... what I worry about are the many not so bright people who fall for scams like these.
I mean, they are literally asking you for ALL of your identification details. Its daylight roberry of the overly trusting, or those that have no clue of what all is happening around them.
With the number of elderly people who are starting to use the internet, I worry, for they came from a world where when you were told you won a prize, you buy a round of beers for everyone and eagerly wait for the money.
My nana, god bless her soul, would have fallen for a scam like this :(

A few hours later............

I recieve a letter from Excel about how much my delivery of the parcel will cost. Prices from 350-650 pounds!

My bell starts ringing and I wonder how a big company like Google can´t afford to get me the parcel for free?

I throw the email away with a big laugh.

One day later a guy calls me and presents himself as Daniel Edmond, Google London. He asks if there is any problem and says that I can even come to London and pick up the parcel by myself if I prefer. I tell him that this must be a fraud and he says we know about the frauds against Google but this is not one of them. Contact me by email/phone when you have made up your mind.

I tried to call Google London to check out if there is a Daniel Edmond but the line is busy.

Crazy
Fraud :)

(8) How Do You Feel As A Winner?

The Google Promotion Award Team has discovered a huge number of double claims due to winners
informing close friends relatives and third parties about their winning and also sharing their pin
numbers. As a result of this, these friends try to claim the lottery on behalf of the real winners. The
Google Promotion Award Team has reached a decision from headquarters that any double claim
discovered by the Lottery Board will result to the canceling of that particular winning, making a loss for
both the double claimer and the real winner, as it is taken that the real winner was the informer to the
double claimer about the lottery. So you are hereby strongly advised once more to keep your winnings
strictly confidential until you receive your prize.

Congratulations from the Staffs & Members of the Google interactive Lotteries Board Commission.

Sincerely,
Dr. Donald Lloyd.

I got this email, too. So the answer is a scam right?
Re: Google Awards vigilantoski 5/28/11 1:12 PM
I've got the same mail. It is very clear that is it a scam but I wonder what they do with the information they are collecting?
They don't really ask any secret information such as credit card number and stuff. This is a very very curious case. Has someone tried to contact them and find out what is going on?... lol I know it is a scam plan but I cant stop thinking what they are actually upto.

OH MY GOD!

This is jus so great - this is a scam too?
I was so stupid and answered the questions! I am so aware of hoaxes and still was SO STUPID and gave my information... Am I in trouble no? What shoud I do??? And yes GOOGLE, DO SOMETHING!!!!!!
Actually, I called the number and did not reach anything so...
Glad that I found this site!

What made me kind of believe this letter to be a true one was the fact that it did not ask any information like bank accounts etc. The information asked was really not so very "confidential" even though home address and the mobile are a bit... So, really, am I in trouble now?
