iframe error glenn1965 10/28/09 5:33 AM

I have the google news feed on several pages on my site. Tonight I've noticed they all display...

This content cannot be displayed in a frame

To help protect the security of information you enter into this website, the publisher of this content does not allow it to be displayed in a frame.

What you can try:

Open this content in a new window

Is there a problem? I havnt changed anything at my end.

I thought maybe try new code, but when I went into the google news wizard page, it displays the same error on the demo news box.

Thanks in advance

Glenn

On further investigation this apears to be a IE issue, firefox displays the news feed correctly. I dont want to take the news feeds out of the web site, but I dont want my visitors viewing a error message that causes concern. Anyone else notice this bug?

IE7 works fine, Google Chrome does not display news, Apple Safari does not display news and IE8 does not show the news it gives a warning.

(To help protect the security of information you enter into this website, the publisher of this content does not allow it to be displayed in a frame.)

I wounder if Microsoft latest has caused this.

IE7 on XP Pro no updates lately but Vista I had some updates yesterday I bet that is the cause of the iframe not displaying.

Re: iframe error Raydeen 10/28/09 11:22 AM
Up until this morning (10/28/09), my iframe was rendering just fine for Google News in IE8 (http://www.simplyraydeen.com).  Stopped working this morning.  I do not have automatic updates set to on, so my guess is that it is the application sending the information into the frame which is to blame.

So, until there is a better explanation of why this just happened overnight, I'm pointing at Google News and the possibility that they have updated their application last night.  The error that we are receiving in IE8 is 'the publisher of this content does not allow it to be displayed in a frame'.

Although this is not related to iframes, Google made upgrades to their google docs application several months ago, and if you are using IE8 you no longer are able to create/save a new spreadsheet.  You can in Google Chrome though...

I find it ironic that you cannot see Google News in Google Chrome now either.

Raydeen,

Could you show me an URL on your site where the news feed is displayed through an iFrame, please?
I can't reproduce what you're experiencing.

and even Googles own Newpage Wizzard page

I am using IE8 with automatic updates turned on.

Hang on, sorry, that first link isn't going to work. The forum only displays the news feed to forum members, to guests it displays a google adsense block.

Please refer to the second link, Googles Newpage  Wizard.

I've made a slight change to the forum code, it now displays a news feed for all visitors on the forums front page (  the link above ). I can confirm Chrome isn't working as well.

Methode

The home page has the google news module at the top directly above the main title "Website Accessibility Information Clearinghouse" -- http://www.simplyraydeen.com

The iframe is now indicating that it the content cannot be displayed in a frame.  But has been working fine for the last month.

Thank you -- Raydeen
Re: iframe error Raydeen 10/28/09 3:57 PM
I can see the google news iframe fine in IE8 on Googles NewsShow Wizard located at:(http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/documentation/newsshow/wizard.html).

I checked my coding against google's Wizard page and it isn't much different, I really did not see anything that jumped out at me with the exception of the search topic selections.  This got me to testing some things and it really appears, at least to me, that something has broken in google news.  (http://www.simplyraydeen.com/iframetest.html)  -- This test demonstrates that it isn't IE8 that is the problem since I can see the top headlines fine, but rather the google news application.

Google NewsShow Wizard is only working if the default of 'Top Headlines' is selected.  If you try to select a different search topic, you will get the same error as we are experiencing.  You can try this out right on their NewsShow Wizard webpage.  Try selecting different topics.  Nothing works but the top headlines selection.

I have other content using iframe on my site and IE8 shows it without any errors.

If you click on the error page (Open this content in a new window)

Google news shows on IE8, go figure.

Google Chrome does not show any error page, it just does not display the iframe news.

Glen, I did some more testing and if you visit http://www.simplyraydeen.com/iframetest.html you will see that it does work in IE8 but I'm not sure why...  As a fast turn-around to fix on your website, try this:

Open Google Chrome
Enter your parameters for your news
Copy/Paste the code that is generated into your webpage.

It should work!

I've been trying to review the difference between the coding that works and the coding that doesn't.  This reminds me very much of the problem that I mentioned before with google docs spreadsheets; it worked fine one day and then just stopped mysteriously but ultimately works when you use Google Chrome to generate the coding.

Re: iframe error Raydeen 10/28/09 5:15 PM
I think that I've resolved this issue for IE8. Rules were changed somewhere..., the search query (q=...) must now go first in your coding; before the topic, format, etc.

For example, if you wanted to search for 'world' news, you would use this code:
        iframe frameborder="0" width="728" height="90" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"
        src="http://www.google.com/uds/modules/elements/newsshow/iframe.html?q=%20&topic=w&rsz=small&format=728x90"

Instead of:
        iframe frameborder="0" width="728" height="90" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0"
        src="http://www.google.com/uds/modules/elements/newsshow/iframe.html?topic=w&rsz=small&format=728x90">

Using Google Chrome creates the correct coding if you do not know where to change manually.

What ever it was it has been corrected.

I for one glad it was fixed.

Hail the powers that be.

Re: iframe error glenn1965 10/28/09 6:59 PM
Yes I can confirm the problem has been fixed from my site, its working correctly.

Google I think a bit more cross browser testing should be included in your quality control before bringing new code online, this sort of bug doesn't look good for us or you.

Yes, I agree!

And, if anyone is using Joomla's Google News Module and needs to figure out where to change the coding, please go to my website article that I just published on my homepage: http://www.simplyraydeen.com entitled "Google News Module Suddenly Stopped Working in IE8 - is iframes the problem?"

I've posted a work-around there.
Re: iframe error jcsousa 10/28/09 7:11 PM
Yes I agree also, its time Google assigned someone to deal with these problems.

Let's not forget Flash Ads using 100% of our CPU, still not addressed.

Re: iframe error scottxot 10/29/09 5:40 PM
I discovered this problem yesterday using Firefox 3.0.15, but Raydeen's solution to begin with the search query took care of it for me. Thanks for the thread and answer!
