Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? nerdinmich 8/6/09 8:39 PM
Please add a way to view city and county borders within Google maps.  When I travel or move to a new area, city borders and county borders are nearly impossible to determine and I have not found any mapping software that shows this information.  Since all weather alerts are based on county, knowing which county you are in could save your life.  When searching for housing, yard sales, etc. knowing the city and where one begins and ends can greatly assist in your search.

If this feature is currently available, you need to add instruction on how and link to the instructions more prominently in your web site.

I second this.  I want to understand where my street is in relation to the city and county borders.  Tornadoes are small and specific enough that it matters.

Absolutely agree-in fact, I have at times been able to get the county line demarkation on a map when I requested an address but I don't know how I got it and I can't replicate what I don't know. FRUSTRATING!!!! If there is a way to dig a virtual hole through the earth on Google Maps, surely there should be a way to find something as simple as city/county lines.

People have been asking for this feature for a long time  and so far nothing, so rather to wait for Google to implement it you can use a third party solution implemented using the Google Maps data [1].

I would also like to see this. Google's purpose is to organize the worlds information. City and township borders are vital information when it comes to maps.

I am also looking for town border maps

This would be something really useful when you are on a trip!
Come on google, you can do it.

This isn't surprising, Google has been elevating the profile of national borders over state, and state borders over townships.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? Zackatista 6/28/10 7:42 PM
This is an important, necessary feature.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? donpc33 7/9/10 2:41 PM
Solution in maps huge info only works for organized towns and cities. Don't know why there are lots of townships that are ont organized
in the North East South and West.

Would really be a great improvement especially if it were done as vectors so that it doesn't cover the whole map like the road line does when zoomed in.

mapboundary.com may have what you need in the form of "county subdivisions".  they are not free, but 10 bucks, so "almost" free.

Found the answer myself - http://maps.yahoo.com/  Yahoo Maps shows county borders and it is free

I would really like to see this, also.  Town borders would be an immense help.

I agree, this is a very important feature that is missing!
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? Fungi8pho 2/16/11 2:45 AM
I think county line border should be doable, but city line changes sometimes changes...
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? jcw82 3/31/11 12:28 PM
I am amazed at how difficult it is to find a good city map.  Plunking the name of a municipality in the middle of the map is a general guide but overall fairly useless.  Is there something particularly difficult about offering this?  Don't enough people want this feature?  Even searching generally on the web it's difficult to find good maps.  I found this very frustrating.
PLEASE SAVE US FROM THIS FRUSTRATION GOOGLE!!

Google added the city boundaries within search results. (try Googleing "Los Angeles") Why isn't this a feature in the main Maps interface?
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? TheCuber 6/19/11 7:34 AM
This is a new feature, but if you google any city or town, you will be able to see the border within the mini map on the Google search page. I can't seem to get it to work with the main Google Maps page, though. This also works with pretty much every city in the world and counties
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? familiarmoniker 6/20/11 3:22 AM
I'm also looking forward to seeing city/county borders integrated into Gmaps (fingers crossed). It's not entirely that convenient to have to search every jurisdiction you want to view. It shouldn't be that difficult either.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? doregasm 6/29/11 6:02 PM
I swear, there was a way before to do this. You would find the city on google maps, and then you would, like, go into edit mode, or something like that. It was slower, but it would let you look at the maps and see different municipal boundaries (it was all municipalites...that huge one only does cities/towns.)

But yes, Google, please add this feature!
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? Jonah McIntosh 8/7/11 11:46 AM
What I don't understand is that when you google the city you want to look at, you can see the boarders in the thumbnail, but not when you click through to the link!

It seems like to me, that they have this feature and won't release it for public consumption or something?
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? radioaktiv 8/16/11 7:34 AM
Agreed. It's so neat seeing it in the thumbnail, I hope one day they have the option to turn on those boundaries in the full map.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? scornell8 9/24/11 11:32 PM
I thought I was the only one that wanted county borders.  So much information is given with only the county referenced.  When I go to view locations on Google, I cannot simply zoom in and find county (or township) outlined.  This is very frustrating when I need the information quickly. I actually go to Yahoo maps for county boundaries, but I really want to work with one map!  City boundaries are actually (somewhat) available, but less than satisfactory.  If you look closely, the city area is shaded ever so slighty.  It is not too helpful though when cities are next to one another and they merge into one blob.  More contrast is need to make these boundaries stand out.  Maybe an option could be available to "turn off" one or more boundaries for those who don't need it, or don' t desire it in certain cases.  I realize that maps can become very crowded with lines if too many features are added. An overly would be great to add to the most basic maps.  Regardless, I would argue that counties are even more imporatant than some of the feature currently on Google maps.

The funny thing, if you search for a city in Google - it does show a map inset with city borders in search rtesults. If you click it - it goes to ordinary plain maps...

Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? synthdave 1/20/12 6:07 AM
Wow. I've been poking around in the feature set for about 10 minutes trying to figure out what I missed. I just couldn't bring myself to believe that it wasn't possible to display city borders. I don't think it can be overstated how much of an oversight this is.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? barryhunter 1/20/12 6:32 AM
Actully synthdave, it is now possible.

Search for the city, example:

and you get the extents highlighted in pink. Only works in Map view.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? ehg 1/20/12 6:45 AM
The recently realized feature now shows many kinds of "boundaries":
Searching for countries, states, provinces, counties, cities and even parts of cities it displays the according "boundary".
Its a great amendment of GoogleMaps I would say.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? nawainruk 2/7/12 9:05 AM
I agree, it's really great amendment of Google maps,

is it possible for us to extract the boundary, and export it as KML or other format, so that it's reusable ??
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? ehg 2/7/12 9:25 AM
@nawainruk: same question already discussed here:
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? Macedonian Mapper 2/8/12 2:59 PM
They misplaced the boundaries in Macedonia. For eg. Skopje is elevated down and it's not very accurate. I sent them many emails and reported error but still nothing. They have to implement this feature to MapMaker.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? ehg 2/9/12 1:11 AM
I agree Macedonicus, it should be possible to edit such typ of lines in MapMaker too.
Especially for such search results on regions where GMaps displays bottom right of  the map  the link "edit in Goolge MapMaker" as happened for Macedonia.
Will escalate the request to Google.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Regards
ehg
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? ehg 2/9/12 1:21 PM
seems  -instead of editing the boundary polygone line of Skopje- you edited your nickname  here in the forum from "Macedonicus" to "PeTaRcHo" little bit confusing me.
But I meanwhile got explained how to edit the boundary of skopje through Google MapMaker:
Click then in MapMaker  the link "Edit" (at the left sidebar) and then "Edit this place".
You then get the area of Skopje highlighted in blue color and can edit it dragging the points of the polygoneline around the area.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? Macedonian Mapper 2/9/12 1:43 PM
Google named me PeTaRcHo i didn't ask for that :) I'm known everywhere with the pseudonim Macedonicus. Anyway the thing you suggest won't solve the problem because the boundaries won't show on Google Maps, they are only MapMaker.
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? ehg 2/9/12 2:07 PM
you are mistaken - unfortunately.

For any kind of errors or lacks on GoogleMaps  will Google  used to be provide three ways to get them corrrected
1. reporting via the link "report a problem" (not applicable for your country & issue)
2. reporting it to the special map provider of a special region or country  (not applicable for your country & issue)
3. via editing it through MapMaker  (applicable for your country & issue)().

MapMaker is one of the "channels" GoogleMaps get input from the community to show any updated things later on GoolgeMaps.
The other point is:
Wasn't it "Macedonius" requesting in his post yesterday: "They have to implement this feature to MapMaker".

Now I'm explaining you they already have implemented this feature in MapMaker.
So what?

Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? Macedonian Mapper 2/9/12 3:06 PM
Look, i'm not here to argue with you. You don't understand the core of the problem. Once again, Google uses different type of tool for editing the boundaries which is NOT AVAILABLE on Google MapMaker. Those boundaries that we edit in MapMaker come with the city itself and they appear only when you type the name of the city in the search bar in Google maps and press enter. When not, the ones Google creates remain there in their incorrect position. So what now?
Re: Is there a way to view city borders in Google Maps? ehg 2/10/12 1:41 AM
I understand very well the problem: You see in GoogleMaps  "misplaced  boundaries in for eg. Skopje" and you seem to know (and I believe this) that boundaries more exactly as GoogleMaps shows them and you want help to correct the "misplaced  boundaries in for  Skopje" so far so good I hope.

Now I asked on behalf of you the responsible folks at Google how to achieve editing the misplaced boundary for Skopje  and I got the answer to to this via mapmaker.

BTW this seems very resonable because the "misplaced  boundaries in for  Skopje"  on GoogleMaps are the same as the boundaries a Google's MapMaker shows if following the hints I already gave you in one of my earlier post here:
Click then in MapMaker  the link "Edit" (at the left sidebar) and then "Edit this place".
You then get the area of Skopje highlighted in blue color and can edit it dragging the points of the polygoneline around the area.

Period!
