Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? salak6rv 4/16/09 2:21 PM
Over half of the world is using kilometers (km) for distance measuring instead of miles. I would like to change my Google Maps account (or my total Google account to Metric System). Please help me ;)

2009-04-21
The question popped out, because I do live in Estonia and I'm currently looking at Estonian map. I was drawing a line to map I created and the line did show distance in miles. Unfortunately nobody here in Europe (maybe besides the britts) can can understand it :(

So I my question remains the same.

The default is to show distances in the units used in the country you are looking at. I do not think there is a way of changing that.
If you are referring to driving directions, then click on the show options link and select km and click again on the get directions button.
I do not think there is a way to change this default behavior.

I would like to know this too. The miles pop up when you draw a line in my maps thus not when you use it for directions. The lines option is good to get a clear idea of the distance. It used to be in the metric system but somehow it is not anymore.

The units is based on the country of domain, if there are no other overrulling params.

So you can just use a specific country domain, eg maps.google.fr

Can change it to english or other language, in which case it behaves like the other site.

gives me distances in km even though I am looking at the UK, which uses Miles ;)

The last advice does not help if you are actually located in UK ... :-(

@ barryhunter:
for me its still not clear how i can get the best combination: english language AND kilometers...
usually i use my native language dutch for my google account.
but i changed it into english, to send links of my various travel maps to international friends.
as soon as i did that, the kilometers became miles. annoying and inconvenient.
how can i change that?
thanks,

wim

@barryhunter: Thanks, that works! Excellent!

@wimyolgya: Put this link into your bookmarks and use it for accessing google maps:
http://maps.google.nl/maps?hl=en
I am also in the Netherlands, and it works!!!

@barryhunter: Thanks - Works fine for me in the UK too.

@Lavie: Go to the French URL and then log back on to your Google account.

@cybergabi

maps.google.fr worked fine!
And also maps.google.com.br.
My routes, now, show distances in km.

I appreciate the suggestion to change my domain.  I changed to maps.google.es, and now I can see it in km and in English.

However, this is really just a hack.   Google (if you ever read user suggestions), this should be something I can change in my settings.  Just because I'm from the US doesn't mean I favor the archaic measurements most people use here.
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? rspeed 2/10/10 4:39 AM
The domain name workaround doesn't work for me. I tried the French, Dutch and British domains, but they all had the same results. If I get directions for a trip in a country that uses the metric system, I get metric distances. As soon as I get directions for locations in the US, however, it switched back to imperial distances.

Very annoying.
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? barryhunter 2/10/10 4:49 AM
rspeed, this thread is talking about route plotting in My Maps - which the only known way to change it suse the domain trick documented here.

You appear to be talking about the Directions feature, - for that just click 'Show Options' in the directions box.
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? derekos 2/14/10 1:31 AM
why don;t they just put an option for us in UK to save KM as our default
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? Paul239867 2/15/10 8:48 AM
Or can't they just always calculate and show both? No regionalisation of units: I use metric and imperial depending on what I'm doing. It would be handy to have both, and surely that'd be easier from google's point of view.
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? willems.stijn 2/17/10 6:59 AM
Both would be excellent!
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? willems.stijn 2/17/10 7:00 AM
Both would be excellent
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? tim.holland 3/22/10 7:42 PM
If it is based on your country domain, why does it use feet and miles here in Vietnam, a country that exclusively uses the metric system?

Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? Christopher_A 5/29/10 5:45 AM
this is stupid and crazy easy for google to fix

Why not just add a setting switch to the user account. or even a setting switch to the map interface itself.

Google, please hire more usability designers!!!

@salak6rv, only over half? I'd rather say almost the whole world uses the Metric system by now!
Only a few small countries, including some un-listed Caribbean nations heavily influenced by the U.S., have not formally adopted the use of SI. Among countries not claiming to be metric, the U.S. is the only significant holdout.

I have to say I'm proud of the fact that you don't count the UK as 'significant' :) *

* which despite claims to the contrary is still imperial :)

Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? avoura 7/30/10 2:20 PM
I tried accessing the maps from google.fr using the English language, and when asking for directions to a place, it still defaults to giving distances in miles.
How can we get Google maps to default to metric?
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? avoura 7/30/10 2:22 PM
The UK is mostly metric, apart from miles on roads and pints of beer in pubs. Officially nearly all goods have to be sold in metric. The UK has been officially metric since 1965, although the actual changeover has taken a very long time due to many mis-informed and uneducated people preferring ancient measures which are actually quite different by now in the definitions to the originals (e.g. the Roman mile was 1000 paces of a Roman Legion, as mile means 1000).
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? jfcap 8/4/10 7:07 AM
I try to measure a distance in USA and it is in miles (I'm french and I use kilometers) .
Dommage !
but i use 'Google calculatrice' in Gogle to convert :

Write eg: 29 miles in kilometers
( Note: In french, this is NO work : 29 miles en kilometres)
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? RedGreenInBlue 9/22/10 6:22 AM
Unfortunately, the methods suggested above don't work if you want directions within the UK. And it's a bit bizarre to be presented with a map of France as your Google Maps start page... :-)

So I'm going to add my name to the list of people who would really, really like to be able to set kilometres as their default distance units. I learnt metric only at state schools (30 years ago). I used metric only at university. I have to use metric only in my job. My groceries are weighed and sold in metric only. My collection of OS maps is in metric only. The builders doing my kitchen use metric only (I was surprised at that one). Most of the cycling guides for touring on UK roads that I have in my bookcase, and plenty of distance signs on cycle paths, use metric. Even the diesel for the bloody car I drive on UK roads (in whose manual the specifications are given primarily in - yep - metric) is sold in metric.

So please, Google, will you *take the hint* and allow people in the UK to set kilometres as the default if they want to?
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? SOKÓŁ 2/17/11 1:56 PM
To change miles to km do the following:
1) go to maps.google.com
2) In search enter:
 A to B
where A is address A, and B is address B
3) Click search maps
4) On the left side bar you will have get directions with address of point A and address of point B, and below you will have links: Add Destination - Show options. Click Show options.
5) Small menu on side bar will pop up. On the right side of this menu is link miles / km. Click km. Unit of length will change to km.
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? ChrisJakarta 2/18/11 7:36 PM
Unbelievable that Google is SOOO arrogant to require that everyone in the US/UK MUST use miles. There is very clear evidence in this thread that this is unacceptable, and has been for years. It cannot be THAT difficult to set up a user preference for metric measurements. Google, do you really not care?
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? MaxPlante 3/1/11 4:17 PM
Just use http://maps.google.CA. Just as English as the US version is, but with metric measurements. Cheers, Max
Re: Where can I switch distance mode from miles to kilometers? autumntrees 6/26/11 10:02 PM
Well I have the same problem except the other way around: a Brit in Australia who is trying to explain distances to Americans and Brits who think in imperial. The Aussie default is km, which is fair enough because they're metric here. But I'd love the option to be able to choose my default system based on who I am rather than where I am.

Britain officially went metric in 1971 (not 1965), but 40 years later its road signs are still in miles. Archaic? Maybe. But still a valid reason for thinking in miles.
